First time I have heard Dolly do this type of song. Sgt. Sadler did the original and he did it great. I know he would love to be here today and hear Dolly do his song. She to is singing with honor and dignity.
While listening to this as Dolly & SGT. Barry Saddler signs, tears started to fall. My Dad served in the Navy Sea Bees. Dad passed away on the 14th of this month and buried on the 17th. No matter who or where our Men/Women served, this song touches our hearts to know that America is still free because of them. My heart goes out to all the families of all who died to save America and keep it free. May God bless all of you. We love you. God Bless America
This makes me so proud that i served my country, i was an english para and sp proud to wear that beret , i have been to fort bragg and did the american para course , and we were allowed to wear american wings as well as oue own , a band of brothers all over the world, proud to have been one of them, bless you all , especially you dolly.
I was a Marine, but my father was a green beret as a light Colonel. He did three tours in N. Vietnam and I have his green beret to prove it. I am so proud of him and am equally as proud of Dolly for singing this song in a way that it was meant to be sung. They are truly the unsung heroes of Vietnam!
Dolly is a brilliant song writer and singer. She is a real inspiration, in that her private life is an inroad to her character. One husband from late teens and for the rest of her life. He is not in the public eye, and has his own business. Her roots are deeply established in faith in God and her family. It is not pretence with her, and anyone can immediately tell. She is equally aty home with Presidents as she is with a store clerk anywhere she shops. She is just a great person!
I finally got to the point I could listen to Ssgt Barry Sadler's version of this song without breaking down in tears. This version by Dolly, I don't think I will ever get past without tears. I have two children who are Gulf War veterans and currently a son in law in the Shrine in Afganistan. This song definately brings the tears.
In 1966 I was in Vietnam as an officer of the Tiger Division of Republic of Korea, we fought against Vietcong ,together with U.S soldiers in ordr to maitain the peace. This song was a kind of symbol song of the Vietnam War at the time. I like to respect Sgt Berry Saddler and Dolly Parton. Sice that time I have listend this song so often to remember the soldiers in Vieatnam. We never forget that war.
It was a long time that I wanted to forget this song... too painful to remember these brave men... I was so fortunate to have walked among them... may they rest in peace
I love SSgt. Sadler's version, but, this is absolutely amazing. I am not embarassed in anyway to say that it brought me tears every bit as much as the original. I love the added verse. My heart soared, and I smiled through the tears ... it made me so proud to hear Dolly do this amazing song. I am a veteran, and there's few things that my my pride come out like patriotism. I love this song, this country, and Dolly for having done this tribute.
Dolly may be singing of the Green Beret, but I'm sure she's singing to all who served both near and far during peace and through troubled time. I remember friends lost long ago. There were rains so torrential, one could hardly see a risky perimeter. I am experiencing it again as I remember so many. Thank you SSgt Sadler and Dolly!
Amen to Dolly, great job on one of my favorite songs. This song hits home for me in many ways, but mostly because I value my freedom and respect all who have died to ensure it for me. Thank you
I think this wonderful song is for all those who wear the uniform of their countries and who fight and die to protect us all. As an old UK soldier I salute the Green Berets and everyone who defends our liberty. May god bless you all.
My dad rest his soul. Was KIA in Iraq one of the best special forces soldier in my book. I was injured in afghanistan so my mom never could pin my silver wings. I miss you dad Maj. Richard Harlan to this day still my hero
Great version Dolly. The Americans are taught to be patriotic and take a pride in their forces. We Brits seem to think that if we show patriotic feelings, we will be branded racists. We have the greatest special force in the world namely the SAS. Has anyone penned a song to pay tribute to the m
Thanks for this Miss Dolly. I was 101st Airborne. I say 'was'. But, in truth, you never stop 'being'. Thanks you so much for your continued support of our Nations Soldiers. Those who truly understand that "Freedom is Not Free!" And, to all who support our Fighting men and women, you may not know how much your support is appreciated. But, know that it is! God Bless American. Land of the Free...Home of the Brave!
I'm Australian but - how do I put into words what I am feeling right now - so proud that my son, like his father, is/was a member of the Australian Air Force, but so recognises and acknowledges our ally/friend, the USA. Loved this song in the 60's sung by Sgt Barry Saddler but love even more this version by Dolly. May we be forever friends!
not a Green Beret, but served with them, and I can say they are the best, I am so proud they let me serve with them in a support role and later as a pilot for the 5th and 7th SFG, I can say they are the true silent warriors!
Beautiful job Dolly. This song makes me cry everytime I hear it and it has for years. The pride for America from those that wear the green beret is unmatched. God bless you Green Berets
US Army 79-82 Combat Engineer Camp Eschborn Germany. I was not a green beret but I served my country, I love my country. My wish, respect the men and women who served and are serving. We want only peace but realize that peace can only be achieved through a strong Armed Forces.
I respect and salute all the troops from both Canada and the US. My beloved Dad was himself a ten year RCAF veteran, as well as a Merchant Marine vet. He could tell you true stories that would curl your hair.
Thanks, Again, Dolly. This one always brings a tear to my eyes. As a former US Army Soldier, I have nothing but the Greatest respect and admiration for our Military, Especially the Marines and ALL the Special OPS, Units. God Bless them all.

I have this song and all of its variants saved to a play list. I tear up every time I play this list. Thank you to all the Green Berets who gave his life to help my birth country.

Greatest song ever created and by a great American hero. Am an Aussie but this song is as good as it gets because the Green Berets are the hero's of the free world.
I had a 45 record of SGT. Sadler when i was a kid and memorized this and still sing the chorus part to my self once and a while and feel proud of all our servicemen and women who have a sacrificed it all for us here at home. Oh almost forgot main point, verses were added to include all SPECIAL OPS personal.
This is the first time I heard Dolly singing this song & she does sing it well Wish she would bring it back out. Thanks for sharing .God Bless the USA....
God bless all forces in the military , our women an men in blue ,figher fighters and dont forget our paramedics.......keep up your brave and sacrificing service....we owe you a great deal........and thank Dolly for a lovely version.......
I was in the Army for 8 years at Fort Riley, KS with the 1st ID and and when I Made E5/Sgt. I got sent to South Korea back in 1987 to 1988. I was also in the US. Army Reserves and the Nevaday National Guard. I was with the 1st Infantry Division 701st. maintenance bn.and with the 2nd ID in South Korea with the 12th chem. co. I was in for about 14 years in all, and would do it all over again.
We just don't hear this kind of music any more; music that celebrate our soldiers in arms. God Bless The Armed Services; I salute you all. Hooray! Thank you Dolly
My husband was a physician at the 101st and you are accurate; their missions are so secretive; they very rarely receive any recognition. Thank you Dolly, for these words which they very rarely hear!
I loved the song l hope there won't Be any more wars we don't don't choose where we will Be born and to what religion..... why so much hate we're all the same race human so love one another
I like this version of this song. Dolly sings it very well and I did not know she sang this but found it and decided to hear it. Very good patriotic song. And in Dolly's excellent voice it sounds good.
My nieces new husband is training to be a Green Beret, I support 100% the military no matter the branch. They all have one thing in common fighting for the USA to keep us safe and keep our freedom. THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE THAT HAVE FOUGHT, SERVE NOW, AND TO THE FUTURE ONE'S IN TRAINING. GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU SAFE! My father was in the USA Army and was there on D-Day. Thanks Dad I'll never forget what you did. Gone but won't ever be forgotten and neither will your service to our country.
Thanks, Dolly! You are singing for my now departed Father and all his comrades. God Bless America and those who heed the solemn call to serve and protect our ideals and freedoms. Dad, love, gratitude, respect and cherished thoughts of you in our hearts and minds forever. Your son, Frank. .;
I have always loved this song from the first time I heard it after Sgt Barry Sadler first released it in the 60's. Now you have it as a cover by America's lady. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Dolly but know those who have. They all say she is genuine and a sweet lady. Thank for posting this beautiful version. Combined these are a few things that make me proud to be an American.
Hello Dolly, I had two son's serving my oldest served a tour in Iraq and a tour in Afg. and served with the 101st and my youngest is in Infantry and went to Afgan. first where he met a group of soldiers and who also wear the green beret. they made him an honorary member but they do not do it for us, God, or Country only to allow the friend next to them to return home. I am proud of both my son's. When you think of them or all soldiers as I am a vet myself think of the cost of loosing or injury to a friend they swore to protect. May God Bless you and all those who serve. Tim Creager
My Dad WWII 3 missions over Germany came home, Son 1 year Iraq lost 2 very close buddies after six weeks there...he returned but a different person, grandson now paratrooper out of Ft Bragg. All we can do is trust God and your comment brought tears to my eyes about the part to allow the friend next to them to return home.......thank your two boys for me and also I know what sacrifice we as parents make. Blessings for your journey.
I wore a Green Beret for 25 years of HM Royal Marines Commando...... 60 recruits joined with me, 9 passed for duty.. Once A Royal Marine Always A Royal Marine
+Michael Mortimore As an American I would like to thank you and by extension all those serving in Her Majesties armed forces for the lives of the 453 of your brothers and sisters in arms who gave all in defense of MY country since that dark September Day. I and my family will be forever grateful, and yeah I know damn well that to their families thanks will never be enough.
this song and SSGT Barry Sadler are written in the history books and lest we forget, will live on FOREVER in our hearts and minds, god bless you as well Dolly, you to are a legend xxxx many thanks, with love n respect, Ronnie from Down Under. 2/5/17
Dad was a huge Dolly fan, we lost him in Oct 2007 we played the Barry Sadler version at his funeral as he was a very proud of having been a 30 year Army man.16 of those 30 were as a Green Beret, very proud of all who served and him miss ya pop.
michael mortimore as a scot,i never got to serve cos i couldnt get past the medical. but if i could, i would have. what i can do is thank you so much for your service in kerping our homelands safe. if it hadnt been for you, and others like you and our american cousins, life wouldnt be what it is today. so thanks for defending us in the UK.😊😊
Thank you Canadians who crossed our border and fought at our side in Vietnam. Just as we Americans crossed into Canada and joined the RCAF and became the Eagle Squadron in the Battle of Britain. Proud of our brothers in the North....steadfast allies, amazing friends.
I spent a year in the Nam as a radio operator in 1967. Special Forces are equated with the Rangers, U.S. Navy seals and Special Ops. I saw just a little action over there but these guys are the best of the best and are always in harm's way. I salute my Brothers in arms. Barry Hollifield, Matoaca, Virginia
As a member of the Specail Force the line of the Ballad about pin the wings upon my son's chest also bothered me. I would never want him to have to go to war. However Dolly's version made my heart swell with pride and eyes tear up at that line. Thank you for this remake, Dolly.
This is the best version I have ever heard of this song. God Bless the men of the Green Beret. Truly you are the best. I was never a patriotic person and I never wanted my sons to join any branch of the military, but I say this day 2/16/15 I appreciate all of the military that has fought for me and my family. Please forgive my attitude before, I was wrong about the armed services. This song is awesome, and Dolly is the bomb. Thank you
I love celebrities who stand up for our men and women in uniform. Kudos to you Dolly. And a big thanks to all of you warriors, past and present. You are truly America's best! By the way, I wanted to serve but a pair of bad knees got me sent home. Always with you in spirit though.
In hearing Polly Parton sing this beautiful song brings tears to my eyes.. And as she says 'these men jump and die for their country of USA'.. Incredible to be sure. and America is blessed to have such men as the Green Beret
Thank you sergeant Sadler and Dolly for this. There is some deep truth in this song that many dismiss as sappy propaganda. Those who have chosen to work hard and earn the honor of membership in special forces have earned my undying respect and support.
Dolly is just as moving, to have an American do this to show their pride in these soldiers. I also love the verse she added. Makes you proud to be an American.

Thanks Dolly! Love your version. I served with the 101st ABN DIV from 3/69 to 3/70 as a Combat Medic. The very best year of my life.
Dad was a huge Dolly fan, we lost him in Oct 2007 we played the Barry Sadler version at his funeral as he was a very proud of having been a 30 year Army man.16 of those 30 were as a Green Beret, very proud of all who served and him miss ya pop.
Made me cry! It was men like these (Canadian) who made freedom possible for me.
michael mortimore as a scot,i never got to serve cos i couldnt get past the medical. but if i could, i would have. what i can do is thank you so much for your service in kerping our homelands safe. if it hadnt been for you, and others like you and our american cousins, life wouldnt be what it is today. so thanks for defending us in the UK.😊😊
Thank YOU Dolly I was ONE of that BUNCH of guys 1958 ,
Thanks Dolly From the Canadians who were proud to wear the Green Beret!!!!!
Thank you Canadians who crossed our border and fought at our side in Vietnam. Just as we Americans crossed into Canada and joined the RCAF and became the Eagle Squadron in the Battle of Britain. Proud of our brothers in the North....steadfast allies, amazing friends.
This has been a grate song for a long time, And it will last. For all our fighting people. Thank you all
I spent a year in the Nam as a radio operator in 1967. Special Forces are equated with the Rangers, U.S. Navy seals and Special Ops. I saw just a little action over there but these guys are the best of the best and are always in harm's way. I salute my Brothers in arms.
Barry Hollifield, Matoaca, Virginia
Barry Hollifield God Bless You for your service!
Barry Hollifield Whoever they’re after are the ones in harm’s way!
Brilliant song with great meaning sung by a beautiful singer, nice one from the UK
Thank you all for giving part of your lives to keep us free. God bless you all!
...sadly, they never get the credit they deserve. God bless the men and women of America's armed forces!!
Served in the Army, 70 and 71, still get goose bumps whenever i here this song.
As a member of the Specail Force the line of the Ballad about pin the wings upon my son's chest also bothered me. I would never want him to have to go to war. However Dolly's version made my heart swell with pride and eyes tear up at that line.
Thank you for this remake, Dolly.
Say Heah Dolly, Your Beautiful, God Bless America 🇺🇸.,,. p
I'm glad to see Dolly Pardon on this page..She IS The Queen of Country Music!..if in any reconciliation action No! Peace and Love!
Thank you
One of the things people from other countries find surprising about Americans is that they are one of the most patriotic peoples in the world.
My dad was Green Beret. Possibly we were all affected.
M y GREEN BERET Grandson.......is no more.. SFC US ARMY...deceased....
