My deconversion from Christian to Atheist after 30 years

- In my first RUclips video on atheism, I've tried to give a snapshot of how after 30 years as a professing Christian I came to a final realisation that my Christian reality existed only in my mind.
I only recommend this video to those who case more about the truth than about feeling good!

For me, the last straw was knowing the bible would condemn my mom to hell for not being a Christian. How would I go to heaven and be happy as my mom suffers in hell.
so now it looks like your mom is taking you down with her and when you are in heaven there is no such thing as unhappiness or worry you honestly would not even think of your mom anymore when you get into heaven, and why can you not get your mom to be a christian, a true christian would never leave Jesus just cause there mom did not believe so that tells me just how much of an actual christian you were

You know you are using a variant of the "no true Scotsman" argument, don't you? You think you have some sort of authority to say who was a "real" Christian and who wasn't and you morph the definition to suit your worldview.
It seems to me that you are setting people up for failure. You would doubtless like me to convert back to some form of Christianity but if I simply say, in suitably enthusiastic tones, "I've seen the light!" even if I try to convince myself that I have seen the light, it's not going to work. I'm lying to myself and when the going gets tough and something comes along that makes me question my "belief", that belief is going to evaporate. Then you will sit back knowingly and say, "Well, you were never a _real_ Christian.
Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me... she left Christianity because of her mom she loved her mom more than god there for she was never a real christian and not worthy of god and it says it right there in the bible so its a fact not a "no true scotsman argument"

You should never stop questioning your beliefs. After 30 years I rejected atheism and embraced Christianity. Best decision I ever made.

@@A.B.3103 We all have different stories and it is important that we listen to each other. I am not sure that I am a "better person" now than when I was an atheist, but thankfully I have a God who loves me unconditionally in spite of my failings.
@@ChrisSmith-xh9wb what I'm curious about is what kind of education you are willing to give to your children (if any). Religious education ? I am very skeptical about children's ability to achieve freedom of mind when they received a religious education. It is vital that parents understand how things are actually presented to their children, not only the actual content of the doctrine. For instance, they must understand that being a good person is unrelated to faith. The extreme example would be Jeovah's witnesses that would basically make it seem like even being kind is a teaching from Jeovah. How could someone even question such a faith when common sense gets so badly mangled with unnecessary religious dogma.
I was deconverted after 25+ years of being a Christian who went to seminary to be a minister; Christian leaders just repeat the same phrases over and over--if the laypeople were allowed to do any equal amount of talking as the leaders of the church did, their perceptions would be different
I totally agree with you,Jew Shirls!Fear too--fear, oppression,outlawing of any questions or doubts,keeping members in the dark about even basic everyday life truths (evolution theory,human biology,other religions,etc)and the silencing of women and youth:those are the key ingredients of the Christian church...
@Timothy Henricson Can you tell me about the research which lead you to this conclusion? What do you call all the variants of Covid-19 which are arising? That's evolution happening in real time right in front of you. You are in total denial or reality to make it fit your indoctrination.
@Ελληνας Γραικος I followed the teachings of Jesus as I found them in the bible and went to a church which for the most part had like-minded people. I had always kept my eye's open for a more 'authentic' expression of Christianity but can't say I ever found one.
@Ελληνας Γραικος Of course *you* have found the true faith. Funny that God doesn't guide all those sincere believers towards seeking his face towards your particular denomination though? They are all stuck in other dominations who are equally convinced they have the truth. What objective evidence have you got, other that the stories passed on to you, that demonstrates that your denomination holds the truth? Keep your eyes open and keep asking yourself that question.

How did you get around the first verses of the bible with God creating and giving life?
Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We KNOW these laws. We have NO doubts about them. We also KNOW that the laws of nature can't come about without a Lawgiver, God.
So if you want to pretend to be smart, please give me the laugh by giving your science how creation really happened by natural means. Also, throw in how we got the laws of nature, naturally.

Faith is the excuse we give when we have no good reason to believe in something. Faith is a position where you deceive your self in a belief. The problem is that religion has falsely convinced people that faith is a virtue and this is why many have lost there capability to rationalize what’s acceptable and what’s not. Faith is not a virtue, faith is a manipulated mind system to make people accept irrational and ridiculous claims. Once you discover that faith is not a virtue, the concept of a god dies and with it all religions to. The day faith is view as what it is, all belief that requires faith will disappear. But while we have people selling the concept that faith as a virtue, people will believe in anything.
Great video!!! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I stopped believing in 2015. I was raised in the church and with the same core beliefs you spoke about. You are spot-on when you state these core beliefs of christianity. I am 59 and am so happy and relieved that I found my way out of the darkness of christianity and into the light of the truth of no abrahamic god. When I went back to examine my life and the experiences of "god working in my life" I was able to clearly see that it was all inside my head.

This can work both ways. I came out of the darkness of atheism and into the light of Christianity when I was 30, and have now lived in the light for 40 years. No desire to return to the dark. I wonder what was so dark about the church you were raised in, and why your eyes were blinded to the glorious light of Christ.

@@bmoe4609 I like the alliteration, but "fell into" does not really describe it. It was a lengthy spiritual search that took a few wrong turns on the way, but which culminated when all the disparate pieces of the jigsaw suddenly came together. Not convinced that it helps me "get thru" anything. Getting through can be hard or easy depending on what life throws at us, irrespective of any religious belief.
I must say that I loved your video. I'm in my 40s now too, but I gave up my faith in my mid-30's (I guess). It started in my mid-20s when I just started questioning so many inconsistencies. Then, unbelievably, it took me 10 years (YES -- 10 years) to finally let go. I probably finally gave up on Christianity around 35 yoa. It was sure a struggle, because I have grown up in a family of believers. And, my Dad wouldn't even hardly talk to me after he found out that I was an atheist. Yet, over time, he realized that it wasn't a fad and had to accept it. So, we never talked about Religion again.
Yet, I could make a 1000 videos on my Deconversion. There were so many aspects. Just one day, I finally realized it was Bullshit. Once I started really thinking about so many different things with an outside viewpoint, then it made me how more perspective. Don't know if that's making sense, but I am so glad that you made a video that will help others look at their own faiths and see if it is real or not.
And, honestly, I was a TRUE BELIEVER -- if you know what I mean, but now, I can't even begin to stomach how much of a self-centered, conceited, hypocritical, belittling, and unloving person that I was. Yes, Christianity didn't make me more -- I think it made me into less. Anyway, tired, so longest comment tonight -- so I've got to sleep.

I only wish some of you people were closer to Houston, Tx. I'd love to meet some people in person. Funny, how when you're young, you think you're one of a kind (like with your viewpoints and stuff). But, as you get older (now in my 40s), I find that many of us walked the same roads and grew up with very, very similar experiences. I'd never have imagined that I would become one of the "infidels" (as we called them) or the "knowledgeable fools". But, yeah, I'm one of them now.
But, yet, I am more loving, understanding, not hypocritical, etc., which I never was when I was a Christian. Yes, I was some or most of those things, but I was so hypocritical when I was being that way, such as the kid looking to Big Daddy for candy. I don't know if I did much without wanting reward/s ... right? So, it wasn't totally true sincere behavior (like what I have now).
Give you an example (not to brag). I was at Walmart just going with wife to buy groceries. Well, very older woman in handicap spot getting out of car, and she was looking for one of those mechanical rollers. Well, I could she was unloading a walker and looking fearful at the distance, so I walked up and asked if she wanted me to go get it. And, I did. She thanked me, and I helped her day. Now, I didn't do that to "get brownie points". I did that because she needed someone in that instance to help her. I did it because I saw her disability and that she might have been able to do the distance. My Mom is similarly paralyzed like this now, and she would have much, much trouble going that far to get the roller.
So, to me, now, I'm more of a true human being, knowing human condition. So, that's how (I think) that I am better without the hang-ups of religion.
Okay, I've chatted too much. Loved your video. So wish you'd make more. I just loved how you organized it, planned it, and came across very impressive as intelligent and meaningful. Okay, I'm chatty today. Sorry.

I realized that christianity was killing my morals and that of others as well and started feeling sick seeing the same terrible thoughts and behaviours passed onto the next generation. Still feel sad for those kids but I couldn't help them anyway

So many Christians believe that atheists who were once Christians either have a tragic backstory that made them into nonbelievers, or that they never believed in the first place. They're terrified to think that an atheist once genuinely believed, because that means they also aren't safe from "falling" and doubting.
I believed with all my heart, I had a very close relationship with God. I've had several experiences that I interpreted as God's voice and interaction in my life. It's BECAUSE I was sincere and seeking that I eventually found (what I now consider to be) the truth: that a life and world without the existence of God makes more sense than a life and world with God's existence.

I'm 47 and a recovering Catholic. I feel at times that I'm experiencing PTSD after being forced into Christianity for 25 solid years. I have good people around me now, who accept me and support me. I have drawn clear boundaries between myself and those who do not understand my journey.
I'm raising my two kids....rather, I'm following my two kids throughout their lives with acceptance and love. Best wishes to you and thank you for sharing your story. I know that it's hard at times. You are not alone though, this...I promise you. ♥️

I was raised a Christian and promised myself that I would never abandon the faith. I was so terrified of Hell that even thinking about anything that contradicted my faith was forbidden. I would stop thinking whenever doubt would enter my mind. I remember reading and studying evolution out of curiousity and finding it so convincing, and thinking "If only it were true things would be so simple. It just makes sense. But the world is about 6000 years old so it's impossible." It wasn't until I finished my time in the military and returned to living with my parents that I went to church as an adult... And listening to the preachers with my new training and experiences actually somehow led me away from the faith. Further studies online finally brought me to realize that my faith was nonsense. Thank you for sharing your story.

If you’re anything like people I’ve met who’ve deconverted I can only imagine how difficult it must have been. That people find their way out given how strong our confirmation bias impulses are never ceases to amaze me. It angers me that religious leaders, whose beliefs may be genuine, never the less know how important it is to start the process with children. It’s why I’m such a strong advocate of free compulsory secular education that teaches children about a variety of religious beliefs from the past and present, so they at least have a chance at independence of thought and a means to reach conclusions on their own. Lastly, the RUclips channel Theramin Trees (now a psychologist) & another by his brother Qualia Soup are excellent. They’ve helped me understand religious people and have given me tools with which I’ve been able to help them with compassion and empathy.

roxee57 I likened early childhood indoctrination into religion to political and state brainwashing in a conversation recently, which was met with a heavy backlash as they are agnostic from a religious background and a patriotic family. It was odd hearing them defend the religious institutions that to this day still cause them so much inner turmoil and strife. The only reason people have a sense of patriotism or nationalist beliefs comes from a sense of belonging, it's the same type of herding behaviour religion spearheads. If you were born in a certain country with a certain culture and from a specific background, you will more than likely share a hive like belief(s) from your society. Consequences of group thinking, or lack thereof results in some of the most heinous behaviour of human kind.
Why do Russians hate Americans? Why do Americans hate communism? If any of those individuals that make up the group were born in the other place, they'd likely share the same sense of identity. Anyway, it seems some people are resistant to the idea that their particular group is neither the good guy or the bad guy.
My story is very similar... 30 plus years and now I am beginning to question everything. I just spoke with my pastor a few days ago about questions. He was very understanding and caring. But I began feeling that same torment of possibly being wrong in what I was thinking. It was in that moment I realized I still had a heart connection to the thought of missing God's plan. But it keeps coming back to me as torment. Pulled one way and yet seeing so much truth in the other... Thanks for the video I enjoyed your open and honest approach. you also helped bring a little bit of calm to my world at this point in time.

Thanks for your feedback, some great advice from Emmanuel there. I'm glad the video helped bring you a little calm. Searching for God's plan is ultimately impossible, we only wind up finding either our own plan or one given to us by others, or often stumbling along with no plan. Some people are better than others at convincing themselves it comes from above. Honestly when I look back on these years now it's frightening, and I can wonder how I might have used them better. But regrets are pointless, it is a journey we have to go through to get to where we are now, but we can learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. Three years on from this video I'm loving life and so much of that wrestling and anxiety is far behind me, and I hope you'll be able to leave it behind too.

This video hit me so deep.. I have been on my deconversion journey for 1.5 years now and it honestly makes me sad that it was all a product of my mind.. I am now an agnostic atheist but I lean more towards the atheist side. Thank you for opening my eyes after 18 years of believing plus being indoctrinated as a child. Thanks for sharing your journey. I am a de-converted Christian also. The fact that you questioned and challenged fundamentalism and are now an atheist is actually demonstrative of personal growth. Now you have achieved the rational level of consciousness. After de-converting from literalist Christianity, I became an agnostic. Several years after this, I experienced a profound spiritual awakening. Spirit (G-d, the Supreme Being) is in fact real and can be directly experienced in higher states of consciousness. So your faith and prayers and work were not in vain. Your experiences in the context of Christianity were real. Spirit doesn't really care what we call it or what form of religion we identify with. I don't identify with any religion but became Self Realized after many years of spiritual practice. It's not so much the Christian symbols that are the problem..it is a literal historical interpretation of the Bible, which portrays a false god. There is no historical evidence that Jesus even existed. The bible contains contradictions and corruption and is a belief system designed to shame and control people. For instance the doctrine of original sin is entirely false. What happens is that our rationality and our Soul begin to doubt the teachings...because they are not literally true. Peace and best.
....I've had chills since I started watching this video, because it's like you just did a biography on me and my deconversion.

My friend this is the best deconversion video I have seen (and I've seen several). Your story is my story. I too was a committed Christian for over 30 years. Going to a confessional (inerrancy) seminary in my late 40s finally did what I could no longer undo (though that seminary and professors expect to confirm your faith not make you question it- they still think I believe). On one level I realized how the Bible is not divinely sent but is a product of the human development of religion. And on another level I came to see what you described about everyday experiential Christianity and its assumptions. This is where most all Christians live and you are absolutely right- it can all take place in one's own mind - as earth-shattering as that was for me to finally admit. It took me decades to do so.
I am convinced we are entering a historic place in the story of Christianity. This growing group of long-time believers who have seen that biblical Christianity is not the transcendent truth it claims to be is a new phenomenon. I believe the information age has been the impetus behind it.
Mark my word: Christian believers (of which are most of my friends and family) will be desperate to defend what their very lives are based on. They will not give up the hope of seeing dead loved ones again and that everything that is wrong will be made right by some cosmic force. The better the arguments against the truth of Christianity- the more desperate these good people will become. When they can no longer answer our arguments, the attacks will become personal- and they will firmly believe they are doing God a service.

Ah, so you are saying I must have been a fake all along! Thank goodness you have been able to stick me in a box [false believer] - without any supporting evidence - and now you can stop thinking. Trust me however, there are thousands of previously zealous, on-fire-for-God believers who have now discovered the same as me.
Yep and they were fake too. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure you thought you were a real Christian. But as Jesus said, let the wheat grow up with the tares and He will separate them and toss them into the fire.

While I’ve been retreating from Christianity and BibleGod for some time now, at 65 I’ve finally come to some rather stark conclusions after pouring myself into study and research and stepping away from other Christian influences - and observing how tragically misguided NorthAmerican nationalistic evangelicals conduct themselves. This has occurred over the last couple of years. I’m leaning more toward agnosticism than full atheism but have no quarrels with those who want to leave a supreme entity out of the equation. I’ve been told by close Christian believers that they won’t judge me; after all we all have autonomy and agency. Now my issue is am I equally non-judgemental with those who I see as incapable of thinking for themselves? I love the sensitivity in this regard at the end of the video. I will try.
Your story is particularly interesting as you deconstruct how you convinced yourself that your religion/belief was real ... that's rarely done. When I've queried religious people about their experiences they suddenly become pretty vague... Well I just had this feeling.

a deconversion video is always a tragic thing to me. cause it brings to light the difficult, heavy and really quite disruptive process a deconvert goes through. Feels like this person had to come to terms with a necessary pending death that had to happen, lose this life (and probably more) and then bury it. If you ask yourself why certain atheists are so vindictive at the religion, it's mostly because this process was traumatic enough. to make them be that way....and, no, not that they hate god.

As a lifelong atheist it is incredibly hard to understand any of what your former Christian worldview means. Like wtf is the Fruit of the Spirit? What the hell does The Way, The Truth, The Life even mean? I don't mean to mock, because it's not helpful and it's rude, but if I'm being completely honest a lot of what Christians talk about sounds totally ridiculous, and further examination of the meanings behind all of their lingo doesn't really diminish that impression. I can only imagine that to somebody who used to believe all these things without problem, seeing rooms full of people weeping and looking at the ceiling thanking a most likely non-existent being for doing perceivably nothing for them is more surreal than anything but to somebody who has never believed it is entirely absurd to me and it's honestly one of the things that makes it very hard for me to speak with Christians about these things. That's why I value content like this, it bridges the gap between me and people who have a radically alien mindset and worldview to my own so I can actually start to understand.
Love your RUclips handle :-) Thanks for your question, I think it could make a good video to unpack some Christian concepts in terms atheists would understand. As you point to, the benefit of understanding it to be able to communicate more effectively with believers. The 'fruit of the Spirit' is "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5v22-23), and these are attributes that Christians would seek to model and regard highly in others. They believe that God works in them though the Holy Spirit (God living within them) to produce these characteristics. Where atheists come across as brash, arrogant and mocking it's kind of antithetical to these traits and will make the communication difficult, so it's good to be aware of this in conversation. I really respect Richard Dawkins now, but as a Christian he was abhorrent just because his manner was so at odds with these values. Then again, a large proportion of US evangelicals voted for Trump - the mind boggles!
You are right, the jargon is not helpful. As a Christian I understand the need to avoid it as much as I can. Keep talking to Christians, and let them know when it gets incomprehensible. They will not know if you don't tell them.

I have read both "the selfish gene" and "The God delusion". The former is for the most part sound science and well written, but the arguments in the latter do not convince me . I cannot say I have ever found him "abhorrent" though. (I cannot say the same about Trump, who is both abhorrent and unworthy of respect.)

@@1life2live69 Trying to conflate these two things is , in my opinion, a pointless waste of time, and also unnecessary. On the one hand, you have the Garden of Eden story which lays down a doctrinal foundation using symbolic imagery derived from ancient mesopotamian culture. The imagery reoccurs in the apocalypse of John ,thus forming a sandwich-like framework for everything in between. It speaks of the spiritual state of mankind, what it was meant to be, what it is now (and why) and what it could become. Central to it all is the symbolic Tree of Life, which is the source of immortality. Of the other hand, you have a scientific theory which, like all theories, is a working model which helps our understanding of how the world operates. When I left school I had a Dawkins-like belief that evolution was the absolute truth and the answer to everything. This was challenged when I went on to study biology at university, and came to realise that some of my assumptions were not as secure as I once thought, and that Darwin was not so sacred as to be beyond questioning. I still think it is the best model we have, given our present understanding, but I hold onto it more loosely than I once did. In any case, neither of these two things is answerable to the other . We are not naturally immortal. Immortality is only available to us via the Tree of Life which is a symbol of Jesus Christ.
This is , of course, just my own view!

I was in a similar situation. After 30 or so years as a devout catholic in a predominantly catholic country, I suddenly had sort of a paradigm shift, a moment of realization. I suddenly felt enlightened and was able to see the world from different views, unrestrained. Yes, it was a huge relief.
I still go to church and stuff with my family, they are still devout catholics and I want to be with them.
But you are right, this is something you cannot share to theists thinking they will understand. They will have their own moment of realization as I have, in their own time. And if not, I am ok with that, my new outlook has allowed me live in peace and happiness without worrying what others believe, even those close to me.

I'm a ex-Roman Catholic Christian, now a nonreligious skeptic. I suppose you could say I "left" the Catholic Church when I realized the historical claims Christianity made about Jesus were unsustainable and that Christianity simply wasn't true. I didn't so much have any dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church (though I had serious reservations about many of its doctrines), I simply worked out that Christianity generally was unsustainable intellectually.
At the age of seventeen I found myself on the sidelines of a debate between my school's most annoying evangelical Christian and a skeptic. Even though I generally agreed with her (despite finding her highly irritating), I had to admit he got the better of her in the argument. Every time she tried to say "Jesus said x" or "Jesus did y" he would respond "How do you know?" She didn't have much of a response to this other than "It's in the Bible" and some rather weak assurances that the Bible's accounts were historically true.
Given that this struck me, as a budding young historian, as a rather feeble argument, I decided to go and research the historical basis for my Christian beliefs. I was confident that once I'd done enough reading on the matter, I'd be able to hold my own against a similar skeptic's questioning. Several years later, after an enormous amount of reading and study of modern scholarship on the question of the historical Jesus and the origins of Christianity, I realized that Jesus was not the Son of God and the second person of the Holy Trinity, but was actually Yeshua ben Yosef, a Jewish rabbi and apocalyptic prophet and that Christianity was a gentile religion that evolved out of a Jewish end times sect.
A few more years later, after studying philosophy academically, I also realised I could no longer sustain a belief in any religion.
So while I'm not a bitter ex-Catholic and am not an atheist, I have no regrets at all about leaving the Catholic Church and abandoning religious belief. My Catholic upbringing and education has given me an understanding of religious faith and a very solid knowledge of the Bible (better than most Christians I come across) as well as a good understanding of western history, since it was so heavily influenced by Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. But my philosophical stance these days is humanism.
I identify myself as an agnostic with some possible deistic leanings because I do consider deism but I don't claim to know the exact origin of the universe.

People believe in God because he created everything and came down to Earth amongst us Humans to get killed for us, for us to be saved.
We don't believe the scientific impossibility that everything came from nothing, a building proves there was a builder, a painting proves there was a painter, so too does the creation prove that there is a creator.

I left my religion, which was never strongly held, about the age of 13 when I realised I was being told a pack of lies. None of the chantings or prayers resonated with me. Time in church was paralysingly boring and I wanted no part of it. I have been an atheist ever since. 60 years now.

Instead of “needs only faith”, these aspects have only faith to support them.
Looking back on my 59 years I was really starting to think God a sadist. Years and years of "trials" with no at-a-boy or heres a nickel for a candy bar. I would never treat my son the way I was treated, it would kill me to do so. I wouldn't let a dog sit in a kill kennel for years, let alone my son. I'm still in limbo but falling fast.

We are able to detect electromagnetic waves, sound waves, ultra violet waves, magnetic waves, infrared rays, radiation rays, and most recently gravitational waves but they cannot detect any kind of energy that looks like a greater being, heaven, hell or souls leaving a body.

they can detect all those waves because they are all in the same dimension heaven and hell are per say all in another dimension and are not on the same playing field as any of the waves you just brought up, and when you die your spirit does not leave your body, in the bible death is compared to sleeping over 50 times in the bible when you die your soul does not leave your body you sleep in your tomb and wait for the second coming of jesus to rise you up and you will be judged on your acts you have done in life in the bible it says the dead know nothing they know no love or hate and there is no earthy concept of time in death
How do you know those things are in another dimension? If God could answer prayers and make things happen in our dimension then he would have to be in it too. The bible is not proof . Its a religious not a historical book.

I basically had a like experience. In one moment, I had a mystical experience but chose not to define it or let it define me. (After 50 years, I now realized that that was the day I became an atheist.) Born and raised in the Lutheran Church, I studied for the ministry (as a way to try to understand my experience) and spent 20 years as a pastor. As I studied, the faith in my head became MY HEAD, (faith became some mental way to try and perceive my life and upbringing) rather than some outside force. I am not happy about becoming an atheist as I had to let go of many feelings associated with growing up and living in the church.
Hell is real. Not believing doesn't change God , he will punish without mercy.

I too was a Christian, more specifically a independent fundamentalist Baptist for most of my adult life. There was a three-year period in my early twenties where I became convinced of Mormonism, but since I was struggling with a drug addiction I could not keep up with their tenants and rules concerning that so I left that church and ended up becoming re convinced of my Prior Baptist faith. It wasn't until I was 32 years old that I finally became unconvinced that the New Testament was true, and became an atheist, and in fact very quickly became what you would describe me as a anti-theist because once realized it was all a crock of crap, I became very spiteful remembering what religion had done to my life including a childhood full of abuse directly because of how the Old Testament taught parents how to treat their children including beating, the rod which is what happened to me. I'm almost 39 now and could never be reconverted after everything I have learned about both my prior faith and other faith over the world and even though I no longer believe in an afterlife, I still love life and would honestly rather there be no afterlife for anybody then for the Christian proposition which claims that most humans will end up in an eternal fire for the simple crime of not having been convinced of the truthfulness of Christianity before they died which is a very disgusting proposition to say the least.

It is certainly a fundamental cornerstone of the Christian gospel. Whether it has an earlier history, I cannot tell you, but I would be interested to know the answer.

Interesting video -- thanks for posting! I have been, and still am, a Christian. Just curious about how you would explain some events in the Bible (just mentioning a few here):
* Who/what did Paul encounter on the road to Damascus?
* How would you explain the upper room experiences?
* What about the beach encounter where Jesus ate some fish to prove he wasn't just a spirit of some kind?
I have had some experiences, particularly when I was in the US military, that I cannot explain in any way other than God's intervention.

I don't know which experience you had but have you asked yourself questions like these:
Why should it be the God you parents (most likely) have?
Why not Odin or Zeus?

I was present when someone was spontaneously healed; I was present when a word of knowledge was demonstrated (and verified); I participated in (but was not the subject of) an exorcism -- too lengthy of a story to relate, but saw and heard the direct results of spiritual warfare per Ephesians 6:12. The demons (yep - plural) would not have responded to Odin/Zeus' name -- see Acts 19, particularly verses 13 - 17.

If the person who were the subject of this "exorcism" is indoctrinated with the christian doctrine, then this is what I would expect from a person with hallucinations.
From this comment I would conclude that you clearly don't have an open mind and are heavliy biased towards the christian doctrine.
And remember quoting from the Bible is no more like quoting from Harry Potter. First you have to prove the truth value of the Bible with evidence. I guessing you have the same idea about the Quran or any other "holy" text book?

Some famous person said that you don't become an atheist, one day you realize you ARE an atheist. That happened to me about 35 years ago. Looking back, I never believed but I never questioned my beliefs. I pretty much went with the flow until, one day, it didn't make sense. I never looked back.

How did you get around the first verses of the bible with God creating and giving life?
Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We KNOW these laws. We have NO doubts about them. We also KNOW that the laws of nature can't come about without a Lawgiver, God.
So if you want to pretend to be smart, please give me the laugh by giving your science how creation really happened by natural means. Also, throw in how we got the laws of nature, naturally.

Sad you were raised in such a place where you were thought to believe random crap for no reason so it deluded you for 30 years... I was never really indoctrinated in religion and I was like 13 the 1st time I came across anything really religious (a funeral), and from the 1st sentence I heard that priest spit, I instantly said to myself "that is some kind of next level bs"... for religion feeds on emotions to survive and that alone makes it malevolent and disgusting.
Spot on, sounds like you were old enough to have developed the critical faculties needed to spot the BS, much harder when it has been taught to your since infancy.

Fair question(s). Christianity & atheism are not the only two Worldviews/ beliefs, so did you explore any others, such as Deism. (There is a book by Bob Johnson titled “God Gave Us Reason Not Religion” that may interest you.)
Have you taken an honest look at Atheism’s strengthens & weaknesses?
-or is “problems with Christianity” your only reason? Could that not be an example of confirmation bias?
It’s reasonable to say that Worldviews / beliefs are not a two sided coin but something closer to dice. So have you explored other sides?

The strength to atheism is honesty to yourself and others, and being open minded to any idea if there are good evidences.
I'm even open for the idea of a God or gods, should there be given any evidences. But before that happens not making up any BS is the honest response if the answer is "I don't know."
masters1967 I'm not sure that the video is addressing the personal quest for a philosophical identity and position and more just the rejection of dogmatic thought based on faith. The conclusion was though, his powers to reason brought him away from his organised religion. Other than using your reasoning abilities, I'm not sure what other world view would need to be studied or looked at. A rejection of religion is not always an outright rejection of the concept of a God, just the rejection of the specific God(s) taught in organised religion.

Took you long enough to realise. I was raised in a strict (Irish) Catholic family. I realised at age 12 that it was all b.s.
It did take me too long Gerry but everyone is different.
For sure becoming an atheist is a big challenge. It feels super odd to me to imagine what it would feel like as I don't have any relatable struggles in my life. I don't have any weird beliefs, no addictions, no really bad habits, my greatest struggle is becoming actually good at what I am doing for a living. When I get that, I feel that there won't be anything left to hold me back from getting the life I want. Even dealing with everyday life can be overwhelming at times. Don't ever miss a chance of making a life changing decision / getting life changing awareness when less busy times come.
Its not a big challenge if you have been atheist all your life

I spend much time listening to deconversion stories and browsing atheist youtube channels because , as a Christian, thin k it is important to have my beliefs constantly challenged and questioned. As of yet, deconversion is something I cannot fully comprehend, and It saddens me that something that I value so highly could be so easiiy rejected by those who once embraced it. My spiritual journey has been rather different from most of those who "deconvert". Until the age of 30 I lived as an atheist, had an atheist worldview and totally rejected Chrisitanity as being worthless and irrelevant to my life. A series of unlikely events which I will not go into led me one day to picking up the Bible, and what I read changed my life. The paradigm by which I made sense of the world fell apart and was replaced by something totally different. Since then I have read the BIble in depth, studied its origins and development and it has been an exciting journey. I believe what you once believed with my whole heart. I have now been a Christian for longer than I was an atheist and do not regret the change of direction in my life. Whether it is "all in my head" is a meaningless question to me. I have experienced the amazing grace of God. I once was lost, but now am found and plan to spend eternity in the loving arms of the God who saved me.
Thanks Chris - a couple of comments in response if I may. "could be so easily rejected" - there was nothing easy about it, and it was painful even talking about it when I made that video. So much heart searching lead to that realisation, but once you see it, you can't unsee it. Second point - "Whether it is "all in my head" is a meaningless question to me." That's a choice really - it sounds like you were unhappy, and your faith has made you happy, that's great and I don't doubt that's possible. But that doesn't make it true, just effective, I nowhere do I say it doesn't work - just that it's not true, and it comes at a price (as per my 'Nothing to Lose?' video). It also worked for me for a long time until mounting evidence made me ask the right questions. It makes you happy, but it makes some other people miserable, depending on how your brain processes the beliefs. But going back to the quote, it sounds like you are not worried if it is all in your head, as long as you have the right experience of grace and feelings of assurance of eternity. I absolutely understand that Christianity can do that, but that doesn't make it true.

You have also made an inaccurate assumption about me . When I began my spiritual journey my life could not have been happier. I was in full heath, financially secure, in a job I loved, surrounded by people who loved and respected me. and living at ease in a tropical climate. I was actually less happy for some time after I turned to Christ because of a change in circumstances, but really none of that was relevant. I believed and continue to do so because I am convinced it is true. If it was all about making people happy, you would not find Christians enduring the rejection and persecution they face in many parts of the world.

@@1life2live69 I grew up in a council estate where most people were apathetic towards religion. My parents were Methodists, but we were the only family in our street that attended church. So Christianity for me was much as it is today, something that was irrelevant to the lives of most people, but clearly important to a small minority.

Only through the gift and power of the Holy Spirit are you a Christian. I labeled myself as one for many years but was not. I knew nothing about the bible, relationship to Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Once I became filled with the Holy Spirit I knew something changed about me. No one guided or pressured me to become Christian. Out of the blue I was convicted to repent for my sins and I did. I went from an unhappy and angry person to a loving, kind, giving person without therapy or anything. I was a "new creature". My experience is very common. I am always in joy and peace and thank God everday. God bless
You don't need a god to change yourself, you just need to be determined. The last thing I could do is to become a slave to an invisible deity that is more vile and disgusting than anything of fiction. Keep your toxic god if you must but understand that there are many of those that think all religions are just mind control death cults and yours is no different.

What I've just learned 'The feeding of the 5000' is a nearly word for word copy of Elisha's feeding the 100 (2 Kings 4:42-44)
Historical: I think these are what the Christians call a "prophecy" because it is listed in the Old Testament and then in the New Testament with Jesus doing the miracle. Do you think all of the "prophecies" in the Old Testament could be a retelling in the New Testament centering on Jesus? The prophecies are what is always brought up by Christians to prove that the bible is true.
@@anonymousjohnson976 The problem with them being prophecies is that they contain mistakes as apparently the gospel writers used a greek copy of the OT which had translation errors (the Septuagint) . The most famous mistake is that of Matthew having Jesus straddling two donkeys.
zzapper zzapper: They say there are about 600 "prophecies". So, could all 600 "prophecies" be simply the retelling of stories, mistakes, or copying of stories from the Old Testament?

I really respect the intelligence & integrity of the gentleman who made this video. I've previously read about confirmation bias & how fundamentally irrational people are. Personally I had sudden conversion to faith that began about 18 months ago. The changes in me only make sense from a faith perspective not an atheist perspective.

I appreciate your testimony. It does sadden me because I have the exact opposite experience. I wasn’t raised in religion and came to know Christ when I was 30. I’d love to have a conversation in real life. The people you listed in the special thanks portion were my formal idols. Now I would like to think I can see through each one of them now that I have lost my atheistic confirmation bias. Very interesting.

@@ThePettiestOfficer_Juan117 You've not found the truth externally, you have found a set of beliefs recorded in a book, probably relayed to you by others who passionately believe them and everything beyond that is the construct of your imagination, no doubt a shared construct with others around you. Show me the external evidence that demonstrates that your experience is truth, and not just which is helpful or comforting in some way. It would be true for both of us that the beliefs of Christianity can transform our perception of the world and convince us that we have the truth and that such believers may take many years to see where the ideas fail, or may never figure that out at all, depending on their life experiences and the individual personality.
I can identity with this. I also came to Christ from atheism at the age of thirty. I think there are more of us than may appear, but unlike "deconverters" we don't feel the urgency to defend our position by putting our testimony on youtube.

I make these videos because I wish it hadn't taken me so long to understand, in the hope I might help someone get their life back a little bit sooner, or find a bit of peace when they are under attack from Christian family and friends who, though they probably mean well, are trying hard to push them back in to the fold so save their soul from a fictitious hell.

I was trying to keep the noise down when I recorded it, hence the hushed tones. there was emotion, but not anger. Not seeing my face was down to anonymity, which I needed at the time, and the music was something copyright-free which I found on line, I didn't consider it to be sad! So nothing angry there, but interesting to understand why you thought so and I can learn from that for my next video, thanks for your comments.
The basic tenets of christianity aren't biblical. Discovering that ON MY OWN helped me bridge the gap between the evil religious ideology I was involved with and the happy, peace-inducing friendship I have with my Creator today.

A World Without Sin (AWWS) means REMOVE the object of worship. Then there is no sin. Sin is an offense to a god, in this case MANBURNER. By MANBURNER I am referring to the gods of the bible. If MANBURNER does not exist then there is no such thing as a 'sin'. Its just a meaningless, if not humorous word.

I'm a deist/pastafarian. But I respect peoples decisions to not believe in anything.
As a deist, I am interested in how to manage to be both a deist and a pastafarian.
Ill try to talk the best I can lol. I couldn't really take interest the pirate attire of the pastafarian faith and I don't drink. But the concept of God as a flying spaghetti monster is pretty cool. And the how the universe began with trees, mountains and a midget. He made the universe in 4 days and for 3 days he rested because he was tired.
I do think that God can take any form he wants. From the dreamtime, his a giant rainbow serpent. All creation myth stories are appealing and can be open to interpretation. Some have good philosophies, concepts and ideas. I like Greek, Egyptian, and Norse pantheon. And I like hearing about Pagan believes as well so yeah.
