My deconversion from Christian to Atheist after 30 years
In my first RUclips video on atheism, I've tried to give a snapshot of how after 30 years as a professing Christian I came to a final realisation that my Christian reality existed only in my mind.
I only recommend this video to those who case more about the truth than about feeling good!
I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments below, and if there's any follow up topics you'd like me to cover, let me know.
1 year on - my second video is now available!

I was brought up in a Jewish home. I never heard the name of Jesus, knew nothing about Christianity at 12 years old. I laid down on my bed one afternoon. I closed my eyes, I then saw a man in a white robe emanating bright white light. Behind him were 3 dimensional capital letters spelling out JESUS CHRIST also emanating bright white light. I opened my eyes saying I wish I could see him again. But I had no idea what I saw. I forgot about this vision. At 19 years of age, the Lord led me to himself and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord. I remembered at that time the revelation that the Lord revealed himself to me at 12 years old. The Lord has revealed himself to my family and I in spectacular ways over the years and his amazing salvation gift to all who would receive it. The forgiveness of our sins, of his own spirit to live in us, his direction, council, ultimate truth and eternal life! Open the Bible to find out the details. Ask the Lord to reveal himself and his neverending love to you! Blessings

Christianity stands on the historicity 11:55 of Jesus Christ. I have yet to see a deconversion video convincingly prove Jesus did not do what He was said to have done.

You fail to understand that the person making the claim holds the "burden of proof". It's you who is making the claim that the stories about the Jesus character are true. It is irrational to believe in the truth of any proposition without sufficient evidence to justify a belief in that proposition. The atheist is doing nothing more than withholding their belief in your god until such time as you provide sufficient evidence to justify a belief in that god. No theist however, has ever come remotely close to providing such evidence. Additionally the historicity of Jesus, tells us nothing about the truth of 1 Corinthians 15: 14.

Don't be silly, every atheist knows that if they just want to "sin", then they need to do nothing more than remain a Christian and repent. It's simple: Believe, sin as much as you want, repent, go to heaven. or Don't believe, sin as much as you want, go to hell. I think that you are taking Psalm fourteen far too seriously.

a deconversion video is always a tragic thing to me. cause it brings to light the difficult, heavy and really quite disruptive process a deconvert goes through. Feels like this person had to come to terms with a necessary pending death that had to happen, lose this life (and probably more) and then bury it. If you ask yourself why certain atheists are so vindictive at the religion, it's mostly because this process was traumatic enough. to make them be that way....and, no, not that they hate god.

While I’ve been retreating from Christianity and BibleGod for some time now, at 65 I’ve finally come to some rather stark conclusions after pouring myself into study and research and stepping away from other Christian influences - and observing how tragically misguided NorthAmerican nationalistic evangelicals conduct themselves. This has occurred over the last couple of years. I’m leaning more toward agnosticism than full atheism but have no quarrels with those who want to leave a supreme entity out of the equation. I’ve been told by close Christian believers that they won’t judge me; after all we all have autonomy and agency. Now my issue is am I equally non-judgemental with those who I see as incapable of thinking for themselves? I love the sensitivity in this regard at the end of the video. I will try.

life is absolutely meaningless if God isn't real. The only reason why some atheists find meaning in this world while not believing in God is because they enjoy the blessing of God such as love, which is real even if one chooses to not believe in God. NOTHING can exist, if God wasn''t real. Matter CANNOT come from nothing. When I started to seriously doubt I wanted to end my life, because life becomes nothing but atoms moving around, love becomes chemical reactions, and we are nothing more than a cosmic accident, doomed to be forgotten overtime. The most important question before you die is are your sins forgiven because the ultimate Judge will judge fairly. No lier thrief adulterer murderer, lustful, hateful person will enter heaven unless you are a good person, and no one is a good person but God. Good person means being perfect.

This apostate, this heretic, simply got tired of perhaps living a life of obedience to the one Person that could have saved him from himself. The kicker is that not only did he abandon God, but he assisted others in doing so, thereby making his judgement before the Creator even worse, on the day we all stand before Him. So party on, cake-eaters.....what an embarrassing shame.

Mine was long and due to pursuing the apologists and researching their claims one by one. As I told my own subs in my own vids--it was largely researching the truth. Now, I can't prove that Yeshua didn't rise from the dead if you want to believe it. But a great deal of the time I researched their own apologists. They claim they have evidence that the New Testament (and even Old Testament) is true, I research their claim and every time without exception I have found their evidence isn't proof but speculation and it is poor speculation at that. Like stating that 500 witnesses verified the risen Christ when we in actuality have not one piece of signed authorship from anyone in Jesus' life. All was written at best decades after his death and we don't know who wrote the New Testament gospels. That is one example of many that turned me into the deconvert. Realizing that the resurrection and miracles were most likely urban legends after the fact and long so. Cheers, DCF

Here’s some answers to your problems you have. I don’t know if this’ll help, but I hope it will. I don't know what you mean by evangalism, but we should be spreading Gods love and abrasive truths of His just nature and our sinful nature. Again, with lobe in mind, God sent Jesus for everyone. I dont know what you mean by changed lives, if you mean that some christians seem hypocritical in their lives, then thats simply because of thr fall. No one is perfect, no not one. As far as the state of the church, yes, the state is due to the error that is within humans. the Bible never promised us of a united church, or body. People will do things, think things, that aren’t right. That’s what the Bible tells us. You say you want to see changed lives, but I’m not sure where you’re looking. People’s lives are changed everyday. There are powerful testimonies out there. I’ve gotten a bit disheartened at times When I try sharing God’s word and it seems to never work, but I can’t know for sure when it comes to strangers. I have to do my best and trust God. State of the world. Again, the Bible never promised a good world, or united world, or a peaceful world. Man, in his sin, has shaped the world into what it is, but that’s all changing the Jesus comes back. Physical healing- At my church, there was a man who gave a testimony. He was going through horrible sickness. He had awful headaches. It was going on forever, and he hated it. One day, while laying in the hospital bed, suffering, his son came in. He was little. I believe he either asked if he could pray for his father or he simply asked, “What can I do?” In which the father responded, “You ca pray.” The child prayed that his father would be healed. And right there, the pain stopped. His headaches stopped. There may not be men walking around, healing people, but that doesn’t mean God doesn’t heal. Again, the Bible never promised anything like the healing that the apostles did. Close minds? Biases? I’ve opened my mind to what evidence there is for God. And I’ve found plenty. For instance, where does objective morality come from/ does it exist? It has to exist, else there’s no good or bad. There needs to be a foundation. Where does our innate understanding of the value of human life come from? If we’re products of nature, we’re no different than cats. But our intuition tells us that strangling a cat and a human are different things. Where’d the universe come from? A Big Bang? Where’d that come from? Why is it so incredibly fin-tuned for life. How did DNA construct itself to perfectly code a human life. How did it build into itself a reconstruction mechanism? DNA isn’t alive. I’ve researched contradictions in the Bible and have found answers to all. Don’t think of Christians as close-minded people who are bias and contradictory. Faith is not belief without evidence, I’m sorry, but it’s just not. I don’t know where you got that from, but it’s just not. the Bible tells you what faith is, and it doesn’t use that description. Faith is believe in something because of the evidence, even if you can’t see it. I have faith this chair that I’m sitting on will hold me up. It’s not blind faith, it’s faith based on evidence that it was constructed for people like me. I didn’t see the chair be made. I’m no scientist. I can’t see what’s going on in the chair to hold me up, but I have faith. Maybe there are better examples out there, but that’s not what faith is. Here’s a video that can explain it far better than I can. ruclips.net/video/SIJORjiOWeI/видео.html So, you’re saying that because Christians aren’t perfect, there being no God makes more sense? I don’t agree. The Bible accounts for why even Christians make stupid decisions/live bad lives. How is live worth living? It’s meaningless. We’re all evolved fishes, with no higher standard to hold ourselves to, no morality to follow, no meaning in life, other than pleasure ourselves, and no meaning to the entire human race, seeing as how the sun’ll kill us all. Atheism is incredibly depressing. I’m sorry but there’s nothing worthwhile about living on this suffering globe of water as a meaningless speck of cells hurdling toward oblivion, trying to make sure I at least eat some good food and have some sex before I die. You say it’s a huge relief, because you’re not propping up a worldview that isn’t true, but I don’t see It as being difficult to explain as true, thus it’s not difficult to defend. I recommend Mike Winger and Trinity Radio-(Warning, there's nude art in one of their videos) If ever there were questions as atheists that you need answered, they both do livestreams. They have tens of videos diving into atheist talking points and worldview and refutes toward God. They also have a bunch of apologetics. Thinking, “Would God find this moral?” Is a great thing. God is moral. He is morality. He is good. He didn’t find or create good, he simply is good. If we take your version of morality, which is subjective, then anything goes. “What are the consequences for me and those around me?” Without God, why should anyone care about the consequences, that’s the issue. Rape is bad. Why? Because it hurts people? Why should their pain trump my pleasure? Raping someone is a good consequence for me, get a kick out of it. Hitler thought there were good consequences for killing Jews, but he was sorely mistaken. Yes, read, read, read. Read apologetics, and deep dive into why Christians believe what they believe. Our field of apologetics is huge and deep with knowledge. We don’t believe just because our parents were gullible and liked an old book. (Although that is probably some Christians, unfortunately) You say not everybody is ready to listen. I agree, but those who are, I think, far outnumber those who aren’t. And those who are ready are ready because they want to convert you to a life where you have value and meaning and are walking right with God.

No, He did not! Not unequivocally, @Ethan Richard . Try reading Matthew 7:13, Romans 8:30, Romans 9:14, and Revelations 13:8. Or even Zephaniah 1 to 3? Does not seem, like the Spirit was offered, to 'everyone'. Or in 1 Corinthians 2:14? How can you be so sure? Also, have you personally fulfilled John 14:13, at any major stage? That would be a great start, for establishing wider credentials here. I do not think Paul III or Torquemada, were ever asked to do it, though - to be fair. Or Augustine. And the idea the God of Numbers 25:8 and 2 Samuel 24 is still the SAME one from Matthew 7:9, Sermon on Mount and Beatitudes, is still a MASSIVE strain of premise, at best. Also, why did Romans 1:18 fail so widely, in angelic realm?

@@chrissonofpear1384 Yeah, the gate is narrow because most people choose the easy, wide path. God called them, yes. Them isn't everyone from every time. What about Romans 9:14? God isn't unrighteous. Revelation 13:8 refers to the second coming of Jesus where everyone will be judged. Zephaniah 1-3 Is about wickedness, judgement, those who are a faithful remnant and the joy of God's faithfulness. God is loving and just. 1st Corinthians 2:14 talks of those who do t have the Holy Spirit and thus don't accept certain things, due to their worldly thinking. John 14:13 isn't saying that Jesus will give you anything you ask for, but if your requests should be made in accordance with Christ's will. 'May Your will be done' is a common phrase Christians use. We may want what we want, but ultimately, we should want what God wants. www.bibleref.com/John/14/John-14-13.html The Old Testament God and New Testament God are the same. Its not a strain. He's loving a a righteous judge. Numbers 25, taken in context, is far from problematic. 2 Samuel 24 is God punishing David. Yes, He lets David have options. David chooses the pestilence, but those being impacted by such are far from innocent. In fact, I believe they were deserving of judgement. Was it Jehovah, Adam, Eve, or the serpent? How many 'gods' have we got? As in shapers, makers, etc. And Revelations 13:8 clearly implies one must be written into the book of life from the BEGINNING of the world. Pre-destinated? And those who do not have the holy spirit? I thought that was by DEFAULT. Ever since Eve. Are you saying people at times ALREADY have the Spirit? How many, and from what point? Do you have to not be a 'natural man' to even accept the Spirit, or be moved by Her? Was Augustine, then, or Torquemada? Is free will equally open to all - and equal chance, of escape? And you're darn wrong that it IS A STRAIN. Do righteous judges force 70,000 to pay for ONE KING's fairly minor ceremonial mistake? Seems like it. How do YOU KNOW what they deserved? Although a lot of you do seemingly say we all from BIRTH deserve death? And did Aaron deserve to not mourn his sons? Also, we are under a Glass Darkly, and 'spiritually dead' or 'natural men', seemingly, from birth, since Genesis 4. No angel ever was. So we do not see the ORIGINAL nature, or it's clearly intended signs, maker or intentions. Especially if it also 'Fell'. How much of nature 'Fell' and how much of it has Satan swayed, distorted, or hijacked? Whilst I assume none of that had ever happened in heaven, before any angels wanted to rebel, or felt any urge to, or any belief they could reasonably win. Heaven's 'nature' was never hijacked, fallen or distorted. So why are we held to a higher standard of discernment? After falling?

@@chrissonofpear1384 the wide, easy path was Paul referring to the fact that you could stay with the rabbis and old Testament faith or take the hard path of truth, with Jesus. God didn't design us with sin natures, the result of which we lean toward selfish decisions. He gave us free will. We have One God, who has three parts. The Father, the Son, a d the Holy Spirit. Pre-destination is unbiblical. Those in the Book of life, are written in by their allegiance with Christ. We are chosen in Christ. Ephesians 1:4 "Just as He chose us in Him..." He sent Jesus for us all. When we put our faith in Him, and follow Him, we are in Christ. Only those who are Christians have the Holy Spirit. It's a privilege not all possess. You receive the Holy Spirit after accepting Jesus into your heart, becoming saved. Those 70,000 weren't innocent and David's mistake was a sin against God. Those are never minor. We're all sinners, thus deserving of death. We do not have total depravity or are so spiritual dead that God must revive us first. It goes against man's overall free will, against many passages of scriptures that put the onus on us to repent, to turn to the Lord, to change our ways. I don't have the exact calculations of Nature's falling nor Satan's exact handiwork. I don't need that. Angels are different beings than us, and Heaven is a different place than earth. Higher standards of discernment? Wr're different creatures in a different plane of existence. Generally, we are held to high standards because everyone should be. We should all compare ourselves to perfection and chase it. That's what it means to walk in Christ's steps. He is man perfected. God is perfect. We should be like Him and follow after Him.

The fact that you questioned and challenged fundamentalism and are now an atheist is actually demonstrative of personal growth. Now you have achieved the rational level of consciousness. After de-converting from literalist Christianity, I became an agnostic. Several years after this, I experienced a profound spiritual awakening. Spirit (G-d, the Supreme Being) is in fact real and can be directly experienced in higher states of consciousness. So your faith and prayers and work were not in vain. Your experiences in the context of Christianity were real. Spirit doesn't really care what we call it or what form of religion we identify with. I don't identify with any religion but became Self Realized after many years of spiritual practice. It's not so much the Christian symbols that are the problem..it is a literal historical interpretation of the Bible, which portrays a false god. There is no historical evidence that Jesus even existed. The bible contains contradictions and corruption and is a belief system designed to shame and control people. For instance the doctrine of original sin is entirely false. What happens is that our rationality and our Soul begin to doubt the teachings...because they are not literally true. Peace and best.

Faith is the excuse we give when we have no good reason to believe in something. Faith is a position where you deceive your self in a belief. The problem is that religion has falsely convinced people that faith is a virtue and this is why many have lost there capability to rationalize what’s acceptable and what’s not. Faith is not a virtue, faith is a manipulated mind system to make people accept irrational and ridiculous claims. Once you discover that faith is not a virtue, the concept of a god dies and with it all religions to. The day faith is view as what it is, all belief that requires faith will disappear. But while we have people selling the concept that faith as a virtue, people will believe in anything.

I have been a Christian over twenty years, studied philosophy (especially epistemology; including computer science for issues of AI and machine learning) listened/read nearly all the atheists you mentioned, plus far more (I would recommend academically sophisticated atheists like Graham Oppy or Bertrand Russel, rather than some of the more layman philosophers you mentioned), and my belief has only strengthened. I will copy and paste to you what I said to someone else very recently-as I see in your story the same lack I saw in his. // I want to address your leaving Christianity, because I think on this issue you and I differ. I believe strongly in God. However, even if that belief went to a 50/50, or even less, I would not give up living for God. I suspect you think I am irrational because I would not follow rational justification. For me, however, there is more than just rational justification at stake, but relational justification. I will explain. Imagine a professor in philosophy is engaged to a young woman. The professor is only 90% sure she exists (maybe 10% that solipsism is true). This does not affect the professors commitment once married-he does not live 90% of the time as a married man and 10% as bachelor, no he lives 100% as a married man. Now let us say a few years down the line he gets to a 50/50 (or less) on his wife’s existence. Does he now just leave the marriage? No. No because he made a commitment and the consequences of him getting this wrong are distinct from the issues of epistemic justification. He will probably spend a few years trying his best to make sure she exists while living as a married man-because he made a commitment and he is thinking about relational justification. Relational justification is where he puts himself in her shoes and assesses, from her position/perspective, what point she would be OK with him breaking his commitment due to this epistemic issue. When I became a Christian I made a commitment to God/Christ Jesus as He did me. I would not easily forsake that commitment, at all. The Bible and the Gospel message are fundamentally about man’s relationship to God. The Gospel is that we can be in right relationship with God. Christ Jesus came to make a way for man to God and He taught, along with His commissioned apostles, how we can be/live in right relationship with God. This relationship exists in the form of a covenant which is in the form of a kingdom-God’s kingdom in which Christ Jesus has been made king. A kingdom is a group of people subject to a king. Thus, for one to be in this kingdom they have to receive Christ Jesus as their king/lord. A lord in antiquity is one in authority (it is pretty synonymous with the term “master”). I made a commitment to this king/lord and became His servant. I do not take this commitment lightly, and I think that is where you and I may differ. It seems you just wondered off in confusion rather than taking this commitment (if you ever had one to start with) seriously and letting that guide your path. Christianity is about living for God (His will/kingdom) and living to bless others, rather than living for ones life in this world. God bless //

I have come back and had another look at this video a year later. It certainly makes a position that is clearly thought out and well presented, and would strongly "confirm my bias" if I were an atheist . However, I would like to make a comment about the "problematic" column. Christianity is rooted in the idea of a "fallen" world in which mankind has chosen (in the Eden story) to live independently of God's interference The consequence is a world where there is hardship, oppression, war, diseases etc. Nothing is perfect, even the church. The New Testament describes churches infiltrated by charlatans and false prophets. Miracles, by their very nature, are not to be frequently expected, if at all. The evangelism of the world proceeds steadily and has always divided those who respond and those who reject. Everything in this column is as the Bible predicts it will be. It is only a "problem" insofar as faith is needed to believe that the ultimate removal of these imperfections is possible. There will always be alternative explanations and different "stories" within which we can frame our experiences and observations, but it is inaccurate to suggest that the way the world is is inconsistent with a Christian worldview.

Thanks for your feedback, I can see that you are asking the right questions. A strong belief that we are in the end times is where I also went to make sense of everything that was wrong and not the way it should be from a biblical perspective. But in the end that really doesn't explain God's lack of intervention in the lives of people who desperately need him. His non-existence does.

@@1life2live69 I rejected Christianity for many years, and had no idea how desperately I needed him before finally understanding how the intervention of the crucifixion met humanity's most fundamental need. The portrayal of God as a kind of magician who is at our beck and call whenever we cannot deal with our own problems is a distorted parody of the creator/lawmaker/judge/redeemer/ sacrificial offering/ God of the Bible. The kind of god you are portraying does not, as you say, actually exist, either in the Bible or anywhere else. Incidentally, if you read my post carefully you will see that my outlook on these things has nothing to do with being "in the end times".

I too was a Christian, more specifically a independent fundamentalist Baptist for most of my adult life. There was a three-year period in my early twenties where I became convinced of Mormonism, but since I was struggling with a drug addiction I could not keep up with their tenants and rules concerning that so I left that church and ended up becoming re convinced of my Prior Baptist faith. It wasn't until I was 32 years old that I finally became unconvinced that the New Testament was true, and became an atheist, and in fact very quickly became what you would describe me as a anti-theist because once realized it was all a crock of crap, I became very spiteful remembering what religion had done to my life including a childhood full of abuse directly because of how the Old Testament taught parents how to treat their children including beating, the rod which is what happened to me. I'm almost 39 now and could never be reconverted after everything I have learned about both my prior faith and other faith over the world and even though I no longer believe in an afterlife, I still love life and would honestly rather there be no afterlife for anybody then for the Christian proposition which claims that most humans will end up in an eternal fire for the simple crime of not having been convinced of the truthfulness of Christianity before they died which is a very disgusting proposition to say the least.

So many Christians believe that atheists who were once Christians either have a tragic backstory that made them into nonbelievers, or that they never believed in the first place. They're terrified to think that an atheist once genuinely believed, because that means they also aren't safe from "falling" and doubting. I believed with all my heart, I had a very close relationship with God. I've had several experiences that I interpreted as God's voice and interaction in my life. It's BECAUSE I was sincere and seeking that I eventually found (what I now consider to be) the truth: that a life and world without the existence of God makes more sense than a life and world with God's existence.

Hey, you dolt, you sure love being stooo-pid. Yep, that is you. How did you get around the first verses of the bible with God creating and giving life? Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We KNOW these laws. We have NO doubts about them. We also KNOW that the laws of nature can't come about without a Lawgiver, God. So if you want to pretend to be smart, please give me the laugh by giving your science how creation really happened by natural means. Also, throw in how we got the laws of nature, naturally. Life only comes from life. Law of biogenesis. It seems you are full of good works. I hate to say it but good works mean nothing to God. If they did God would have special places and do special things for people that did lots of good works. What matters is covenant and christian communion with God. Spirituality makes a man good, the more loving and faithful we are to men and to God, the more potential our spirituality will become. Jesus was the king of spirituality, everything He did and said was spiritual. He placed no value on His miracles despite changing lives because the meaning and context of Jesus works help us to understand the nature of God. Christianity is true based on the works of Christians and miracles which are performed through the name of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is everything and does everything when we open our hearts to Jesus. A person that falls away did not consider the intervention of the Holy Spirit.
