GoombaHeart I think nobody tried TASing Whomp A less yet. If you do, go for misalignment. You have to be VERY precise :)

Swimming Beast in the Cavern is easy like that if you do the elevator clip
Igloo, chain chomp's gate, KtQ and baby penguin stars are all possible with just joystick and A, and no stars are impossible cannonless. Also To the Top of the Fortress is impossible since you need to beat Whomp to unlock the fortress

This TAS is outdated. You can now actually collect 21 stars without pressing A. If you don't believe me, check out pannenkoek's new video on a new strategy on how to collect the star Chip Off Whomp's Block in 0 A presses. If you improve this TAS, you can thank him.
10 years later, you can collect 99 stars without pressing the A Button (if you use WiiVC)
I'm from 7 years in the future, it's now possible to beat the whole game without the A button. Only on Wii VC for now, though it'll probably soon be possible on N64 too.
If I'm correct we can use a pause to get platform displacement? It's on titling platform at the start of bitfs?

I have seen some many runs of this game like beaten with 0 stars, or speed runs them self, but this was by far one of the best runs I have seen.
This is one of the BEST TAS runs I've ever seen.

As of right now Nov 8 2023 the maximum of stars possible in no A presses is 67. And on wiivc 98 is possible

Imagine 10 years later and the way to collect all 120 stars, is to use only 16 A presses

Luigi was OP in Mario 64 so Miyamoto forced the team to either to nerf him or remove him. They chose to remove him.
Weird thing is Odyssey has something genuinely much closer to wave dashing, except it might be even better.

Backward movement speed is not capped in Mario 64. The shell just provides a convenient way to move backwards since long jumping, the conventional way to move backwards, is not allowed here.
Perhaps not all of the remaining 100 stars require the A button directly, but I'm guessing the A button is needed to complete the first Bowser level to unlock the remaining courses.
well... it doesent require an a press, only bowser in the fire sea requires an a press to get of the pole the first time but that a press is being heavily worked on and is probably gonna get save in a few months

When you dive by pressing B, you have to Press A to roll back up. Which is what the TAS did.
You can use B to do a DR.

***** You can't beat Bowser Fire Sea without A button and get to 2nd and 3rd floors, though. So all the stars has to be obtained from 1st floor and basement.

Yea, it sucks. I hear they're hardworking on cutting off that one A press before doing a 0x A any% TAS. I wish to see an updated "max stars with 0x A" TAS. Oh well, I can wait.

For some reason, I wanted to play Bomberman 64 when I was watching this due no jumping.
Wehn making a TAS, decisions are made on a frame-by-frame basis. When something doesn't go as expected, the TASer undos one or more frame to possibly fix the mistake. As you never see this mistake happen as it's edited out of the recording, it is a re-record.
when clicking on this i fully expected a 21 hour video
the audio channels seem to be in the opposite direction, ive never seen this happen in a video before

Can someone explain how the third and fourth stars don't count as jumping because i hear mario making a sound like he jumped while riding the shell. Don't remember just riding off a ledge doing that
wasn't that sound of goomba noticing Mario?
A specific example is at 4:55. You hear mario's "Wah" sound from when he jumps twice. I don't think goombas make that sound
Maybe somehow those glitches triggered an autojump? I don't know
I believe the shell actually does that on its own when you ride it off a ledge.

That was amazing, a lot of the tricks used to get past the limitation were really entertaining. Is this really the absolute limit though? I feel like it could be possible to get more, but I know nothing of this game.

I don't see the point in claiming pROPs pressed A. This is a tool assisted speed run. If you'd like to see the code, I'm sure it can be released.
No, you can't use a cannon either, because you need to hit A to launch. Unless I'm missing something, Wing Cap can't be used without the A button, so it wouldn't be helpful for this TAS (with the obvious exception of the Wing Cap star)

You do know this is a TAS right? TAS - Tool Assisted Speedrun. Dumbing it down they put set inputs in a computer to get a perfect run.

i believe he got the shell on a specific seam which allowed him to collect speed as he moved along on the shell, letting him clip thru a wall and go fast enough to get to an island you usually have to cannon or wing cap to. but i'm not sure lmao

if it's possible, you guys could put some "add-ons" on screen that shows the buttons pressed and speed of the character, to be more entertaining and fun when the glitches are made
