Sure, leaving SM64 on for 27 days is all well and good, but it's got nothing on leaving your DS in Sleep Mode for 6 months only to open it up and have it turn on again. That's REAL gaming.
How about 64 days?
The DSi battery was something else. so often I ran out of battery, forgot to charge it the following day it had an extra half an hour of battery life out of nowhere
Can't wait for a SM64DS version of this challenge.
6 months? That's rookie numbers. I found my DSi XL after over 4 years of not using it. I turned it on, and it worked, and had enough battery left for me to run an exploit, backup the NAND, install a launcher, dump all my cartridges, and then play some 4 Swords Adventures.
Good thing, because I did not know where the charger was at the time.
@@ArjunTheRageGuy This glitch only works on the Wii's VC version of SM64.
Crash was incidental and a product of your box giving up. Eventually the platforms reach the y=0 coordinate and just stay there until you enter the bowser fight, because that's how the glitch is happening: the WiiVC version's rounding mode for the platforms' y position is rounding "towards 0" instead of "towards nearest float value" like every other release

It's incredible it ran that long without crashing for other reasons, and didn't break massively along the way
I'm thinking there is an ocean of other software mechanisms that is running simultaniously to give an accordingly gameplay. Not to mention the possible hardware burn out. I'm not at all an educated guy, but it feels like that could have been a weak spot, and it would be fun to know what the weakest link was. Some overload has happened for whatever reason in some place in the game.

to clarify why they rise in the wii version but not any others, when the n64 has to round a number, it rounds to the nearest, so when it rounds the position of those platforms as they bob up and down, it gets rounded up just as often as it gets rounded down, so no overall movement, whereas the wii will round a number towards zero, causing it to slowly approach the y position zero, which is higher than where the platform starts. once it reaches 0 it wont be able to go higher since the rounding will start pushing it down.
Hmm, every system since the 70s supported rounding and flooring (and mostly ceiling), it's just an implementation choice. And tbh it a really sounds a really weird emulation change/choice, as round(x) is usually implemented as floor(x+0.5), so it's probably a FP rounding issue instead ...
I don't think I've ever heard anyone pronounce the "C" in oscillate before lol

green was legalized in mario world that month
Hornetly, for both my sanity and bank account, I would've sped it up if I did that experiment.
OMG the "c" in "oscillating" is silent.
I imagine this is similar to the pickup slide used in Twilight Princess low%, where an animation "loop" is missing it's last frame, so every time the animation loops, either Link in that game or these platforms here just start the next animation loop very slightly offset from the last.
OR it could be for a different reasons here, idk. It's cool regardless!
It's float rounding. For some reason, the Wii (but not Wii U or regular hardware) rounds weirdly, causing the platforms to slowly go up.
Yeah it sounds very similar to it
I'm pretty sure it's due to how it bobs up and down in the lava, it's probably bobbing up ever so slightly more than it's bobbing down. That's my guess anyway.
5h3i1ah So if that ceiling wasn’t in the way, it would stop moving up once it got to y=0? Now I want to know where y=0 is. Is it even within the skybox? Also, why is most of the level below y=0 in the first place?
5h3i1ah Then why did it crash when the platform reached the ceiling?
When the platform rises into the skybox, that's where you unlock Yoshi
I would have believed that if it was the 90’s
@@LoganLanimations imagine if someone tries it, the kid enters the level and decides to do the red coins because why not? It's their only star left then waits (it heard the rumor and that's why he entered the level) until it crashes, the kid gets mad because it can't reach the sky box, then after a few days he plays sm64 again and sees the cannon open, uses it then goes to the roof and discovers Yoshi, then says to his friend that he was wrong and it didn't need to reach the skybox, just needed to touch the 2nd floor and if it crashes then open the game again and Yoshi is there
Ya sure? I played sm64 on my N64 and I had the choice to either play with Yoshi or Mario, heck the textures were actually somewhat better, and I've chosen Yoshi, turns out that there are objects that I forgot their names that turn Yoshi into mario

This turned from “blue platform go brrrrrr” to “Nathaniel goes insane because he can’t move”
I love how Nathaniel narrates this like a survival movie
That has to be one of the smoothest and natural ad transitions I've ever seen
Nintendo dev: there's a slight issue. Some platforms might levitate indefinitely if game run for more than a day continuously.
Nintendo Publisher: no one is gonna run this game that long.
Nathaniel:
Believe it or not there are a lot of games that have bugs when it comes to dealing with time. Devs often do know about some of them but don't do much about them because there is a 1000 more important bugs to fix. 49.71... (lets say 50) days is a common bug in games because thats 2^32 milliseconds which is a common timer value. Also some games use floats for timers (like Unity time system) and they start to slowly loose accuracy, but on there it could be up to 100 days before you notice anything.
This bug only happens on emulators, not real hw, due to the difference in rounding
@@sundhaug92 interesting detail. Thanks!

How about Nandy does a timelapse of that so we can see the platform rising slowly?
Well, now I'm curious to see if it can raise up through the ceiling. Also I wish we could've seen the other rising platforms on the top half.
Reminds me of that one legend of Zelda twilight princess speed run where you stare at a ruppee for like 17 hours
I discovered myself that the longer set of these platforms on the upper part of the stage actually do the opposite - eventually they will sink below not only the lava, but also the basin containing said lava! In fact, Mario can eventually walk along the platforms while they are under the basin, by jumping up to them from the rising and falling ladder platforms.
UPDATE: The game has been running continuously since July 3rd, and for about a week now, the platforms seem to have finally come to a stop, converged, just beneath the lava pool Mario accesses by riding the square lift inside the cage.
@@SpeakerPolice why did your game not crash but his did? also july 3rd is my birthday ahaha

Him clipping through the platform isn't about the bottom having no collisions.
- doing that would be unoptimized and could potentially bring about other issues in regards to the player's collision box and its physics interactions.
- First of all, to say the "Bottom" didn't have collisions that would require having that specific game object being built with numerous collision boxes, which is never the case, if that were the case then much larger bugs would arise than simply clipping through the bottom. If the bottom didn't have collisions then it would simply clip through it instead of pushing the character to the proper side. The ground has a marker so the physics check knows the player is on the ground, the act of him being pushed to the other side is caused by the "Ground Check" function they made in the collision box's physics checks. As soon as the character comes into contact with the ground it places him automatically on the platform, that's why it looks like he is replaced there within 1 frame instead of merely clipping through the bottom as a Ghost would. this is typically in play because of the jump system working together with the gravity implementation to prevent any buggy instances in jumping.
:D the more you know.
Now this isn't guaranteed to be the reason of course, as I have not made this game, but I have remade it several times through the help of deconstructing a crack version, this is merely my insight through my 11 years of programming experience

The platforms move towards the middle height of the level, i.e. y=0. So even if it didn't crash, they would stop moving upward once their y coordinate reached zero.
There are similar platforms at the top of the level, and they actually move downward because y=0 is below them.
They would also slow down as they pass through powers of two as floats gain one bit of precision
Thanks for explaining this! I discovered on my own that the upper set move downwards lol
