Going to Mexico and speaking Spanish with others is so much more difficult in my opinion and from my experience because you just freeze. I understood what they said but froze every time it was my turn to talk so this is really cool and you did so much better than me 👌
I feel you on a personal level, girl! I've been living in a foreign country for eight years now and still have alot of the language to learn. I've never done any classes, just have kind of been picking it up as I go. And I constantly kick myself for messing up or not knowing something when really I gotta high five myself for how far I've come! Keep at it, Maya!
I'm from there but I was only born there and grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin bc I was adopted by an African American family but I'm like u Maya I'm still learning spanish #afrolatina #Mexicana 🇲🇽 #Colombiana🇨🇴
I know Spanish but still I understand your struggle. I tend to be very anxious so I understand how it feels to be afraid of failure. So proud of you overcoming your fears, very inspiring!
*Here is good news:* Jesus Christ died on a cross to save people from their sin according to the bible(God's word). Then Jesus rose from the dead, 3 days later, thus defeating death. Anyone who believes this will not perish but will have everlasting life.
i feel you! i can understand spanish perfectly, but when it comes to speaking... i struggle a lot. i've been slacking on practicing speaking spanish. i'm going on a family trip to bolivia this summer and i want to become confident conversing in spanish.
jessica estrada this might do dumb but have u tried Duolingo. Its pretty effective and the Tandem app. With the tandem app u can teach someone how to speak English while they teach u how to speak Spanish.
jessica estrada Same here. I'm Mexican American and my parents didn't teach me Spanish, but I've been picking it up over the years (On and off) by reading books, watching TV shows and eaves dropping on native speakers. Lol the struggle is real. I'm going back to Mexico in a few years to perfect my Spanish. Best of luck to you though!
Maya! I can totally relate! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who is feeling like this trying to reclaim a part of me that was never taught or enforced, and been looked down on. Im glad that i can connect to you on a personal level rather than just seeing you behind a screen. Seeing that you are pushing on and letting go of all the self doubt in your head is now the out look im planning on taking.
Me encantaba mucho este video, como Maya estoy aprendiendo español y voy a ir a Mexico la semana próxima entonces este video fue muy especial! yo siento la misma cuando hablo español pero yo sé que necesito tener confianza y en tiempo mejorará! Sorry for any grammar mistakes, love the videos :)
Maya, this video was so great! I love that you are sharing your journey with us. Honestly, I got choked up during this video. You go girl! Echale ganas!
Maya, I'm so glad you learned you deserve to be in Mexico and enjoy the experience. And don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise! I love watching you grow and learning how to speak Spanish. Its something that I am still learning and sometimes, I get in my head too. But there are things that remind me that its ok. I'm trying and though its hard, I can still work at it. With practice, it all makes it better. You can take my words, I always say, "a veces me dejan en las nuves", hahaha. :)
Maayyyaaaa you're such an inspiration!! This just reinforces the fact that we have remember that we're trying and that its okay to mess up. I've been struggling with that my whole life, thank you!!
Maya thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am Cuban and do not speak Spanish (well a little and understand some but not like I want to, and I have visited Cuba!) sometimes I am sad and I feel disconnected from my culture. However there is more to our culture and who we are as a people. So thank you for sharing these moments. They are encouraging and help me embrace who I am. * side note I am practicing my Spanish and will continue to do so. xoxo
Maya, you're such an inspiration for so many. I think that you trying to learn Spanish and speaking it so well in such a short time is just amazing. I don't think there's a reason for you to feel not worthy, you are as Mexican as if you had been born and raised here, I hope you enjoyed your trip and I surely hope you come back, too. 😘😘😘😄😄😄 Visit Michoacán next time ☺
Maya you're my favorite and you're so funny and so fucking relatable!! I've been studying Spanish since I was 6 but I could never have a conversation with anyone until I forced to when I studied abroad in Spain. My skills were a lot farther behind than the other students and I was constantly in my head just like you were with abuela and it can be so frustrating, but you're right in that it's all your head. Once you get over that (way easier said than done) it gets so much easier to approach people and be okay with the mistakes that you make. Native speakers are actually so patient and willing to listen to you struggle until you get out what you want to say. Thank you for making these
That’s the thing you try so hard and convince yourself you are failing, but really that thought process is what holds you back! I can’t tell you how many people I have been talking to in Spanish and they see me start to struggle and they switch to English and I’m like 😅😅😅. I know they do it just to be accommodating, but it’s such a shot to the cojones! I’ve recently started letting them speak in English and I continue on in Spanish 🤓 Cheers to you and all of us- gotta keep on keepin on!
Maya, please know your kind of latino is an amazing version of being a latino. Someone who is constantly learning about their roots and attempting at every chance they get to better themselves. We love you, girl!
Aw you inspire me! I’m studying abroad in Guadalajara, and everyone here wants to practice English with me. But I’m going to keep pushing through! I can read and write in Spanish, I’m horrible with maintaining conversations too..
Maya, we’re all in our own journey of really identifying with our cultures. It takes time and patience. You have a good group of people helping you along the way. You’ll get there. Keep your head up!
I went to Oaxaca just last spring break!!! I was freaking out cause I went to all the same places as you! So happy that you got to see such a beautiful place
I studied abroad in Mexico City in 2012 and traveled to Oaxaca for "spring break" (we didn't go to the beach). I love this series of videos! I work with college students and they really relate to them as well
Fellow pocha concha here and i love love love that last line you said "things may be intimidating but that doesn't mean you should question your worth" Keep at it Maya! You've got this!
This is so cool! My grandparents live in Oaxaca & I went late last year to visit them! It’s awesome that you went to Oaxaca because it is full of culture and great food!
You go Maya!! Although, my struggle may not be with the language, I do struggle with the the same thoughts and feelings that occur to you in other situations. Thank you very much for sharing your journey!!
I can relate to you Maya I’m trying to learn Spanish it’s so hard!! People always make me feel ashamed for being part Mexican and not knowing Spanish but I really wanna learn

Ohh Maya you always get me in my feels! 😭 But you are doing amazing! Never doubt the progress you’re making or the impact you are having on people. Besitos! 😘
I love watching your videos because you're super relatable. I speak spanish but not fluenty and i get nervous speaking it in front of fluent speakers. I understand mostly everything but I'm just not comfortable speaking it in front of people because I'm afraid of my words getting twisted ,when deep down i know what to say and how to say it. It's been a challenge for me and I'm trying so hard to overcome it.
Así nos sentimos las personas que hablamos español y vamos a un país donde hablan inglés !!! No te desesperes, solo es práctica y no estar pensando demasiado lo que haces !! Love you 😘
Love everything in this video!!!!! I finally watched coco last week while on my weekly Mexico trip. I can't wait to travel more. Also GREAT JOB!!!!! You're doing so good for give up Maya✌👍😄
Thank you for sharing your videos! Your success and challenges are inspiring and as a concha myself, I find myself looking to gain an insight to my culture
Giiiiirl, first of all you look sooo good!!! I been noticing in the last few videos how fit you look! Get it! Also, I'm in the same boat learning spanish and had a similar experience! I'm half Mexican and have always felt some kind of way that I don't speak the language. Thanks for sharing your journey! :)
I looooove Maya! There are so many of us latinx who feel similar. Every time I visit my mexican family in Texas I just sit back and listen instead trying to exercise that Spanish speaking muscle
I was born in Mexico but lived in the USA since I was one , I asked my mom why she always had me in ESL classes as a child if I already knew English when I started school, and she told me she wanted me to practice Spanish as well and I thank her for that , I would know Spanish regardless because that's what we speak at home but thanks to my mom I'm 100 percent fluent and can read and write it .. also every job I've had has paid me more simply for being bilingual. Some of my cousins sound all choppy when they speak Spanish and I'm just glad I can do both easily .
I absolutely love the pocha concha series because I completely relate to you. I’m Latino but my parents didn’t teach me Spanish and it makes me extremely sad and ashamed that I don’t speak the language of my people. But I realize that I can’t focus on what’s already happened and I just need to keep going and be determined to learn Spanish😊😊
Aww Maya! It’s great that you gave it a try. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Just keep practicing. Glad the director understood what you were going through and how is it that he knew you and saw your video? Amazing!!!

Keep going Maya! I hope you enjoyed visiting the mother land of your family. Growing up in the USA as well I know how it is once you cross into another culture. The few times I've gone to Mexico I feel like time goes slower and life is appreciated it differently. Keep studying girl😊
At first, I thought yeah yeah, but then I got to the end and that really hit hard because I think in the same way!! Thanks for inspiring me to do more and better!!! 😂❤️❤️👏
