Emerald Green it’s like saying “yeah!” or “That’s right!” I don’t really know how to translate it in writing 😂 but we also use “huevo” to say lazy or brave for example “eres un huevon” means “you’re very lazy” but we could also say “ tienes muchos huevos” it could mean “wow you’re very brave” but it’s a little rude to say in formal conversation and i think it really only applies in Mexico as slang I’m not sure 🤔
I feel like the Spanglish words are more from Chicano culture. But slang like "simon" and "guey" are very much from Mexican culture haha
As a Mexican myself, I can tell you that Chicano differs quite a bit from Mexican

Not entirely specially in border towns. I grew up in Juarez speaking Spanglish words I don’t even know they wasn’t Spanish till I move to the us for good. Have you met a chilango? They’ll have you confuse with all the slang they talk you’ll be surprised.

As a Mexican-American myself I found that I grew up with A LOT of Spanglish.I heard very weird slang that came mostly from my indigenous grandparents, which sadly kind of dissipated with my generation. This made me feel nostalgic (and a bit guilty) to hear these again since I don’t really use them. But great video Maya you get better each time I hear you. All the love ❤️

It's weird! I'm not Mexican, I'm from Costa Rica. And I know a lot of Mexican slangs. I guess it's because I grew up watching a lot of Mexican TV shows.

Tips to sounding more Mexican: throw in a “de hecho, blah blah blah”, “ah ja” (when another person is talking and you’re agreeing), “eh” (short eh not the Canadian eh, when thinking what to say next), “ ah ok, ya” (when saying ok I understand), “va” (ok)

Yes it is inappropriate in formal context, don't ever say that in front of boss, parents in law, clients, patients

That's not quite an accurate meaning. "No mames" could be like saying just "fuck" the meaning of the phrase and the literal translation is what they said in the video. "Stop fucking around" is more like "deja de hacerte pendejo".
And yes, it is inappropriate slang, mostly with the older generation. And of course in work/school/formal stuff.

Mexican slang is something I feel uncomfortable speaking even though I am Mexican. My parents are pretty “proper/polite” with their Spanish so it’s not something I grew up around, so I didn’t know much of these!
Same, I know most of them but I've never truly speak it with my family since their very conservative with speech especially for a girl. I remember I said a slang phrase I heard from my cousin and got slapped for it. I only use it with friends.

I thought "no pues wow" was when someone is telling you something and you're only half listening and then they finish and want a response so you're just like "no pues wow..." or can it be used both ways?
Mmmmmm I don't know about that. Here we use it in a more sarcastic way, like when someone is telling you something boring or not interesting, in a very obvious way and then you respond with "no pues wow", but is most commonly used between friends and family you are close to, otherwise people might think you're rude. When you're half listening I suggest "órale" "en serio?" "Si claro" "pues obvio" if it's something cheerful, if it's sad is better to go with "te entiendo" "todo estará bien" "uff qué feo" "no mames, neta?". Sorry for the long response, language is tricky yet beautiful

It's true we do use it in a more sarcastic way 😂 I USE IT ALL THE TIME when I just dont want to talk anymore and I find the conversation kinda boring. Or bbn I just say it to get the other person mad 😂😂 but its true you should only use it with someone you're close with or it might come off as rude if you say it to someone else
The closes equivalent to it that I can think of at the moment is “oh really, tell me more” but sarcastically of course.

I believe so too but her friend had a point. The journey she started was to bring her closer to her heritage which for her would be her Mexican roots. She is doing great and I think it's funny that she was really thoughtful, she should also know that a lot of Spanish speaking people like me know a lot of slang from other Spanish speaking countries so she shouldnt feel so much pressure to focus on Mexican slang.

I really relate to maya on a couple of different levels. For starters my name is also Maya and I’m also learning Spanish and trying to learn more about my heritage. I am half African-American and half Puerto Rican and I’m happy to know that I’m not in this journey alone.

Same here about being half Mexican (although my grandma does speak English) I'm gonna start learning Spanish too. I feel guilty, I avoided learning it because my parents wanted my grandma to talk to me in Spanish as a baby but she didn't and so I was always kind of annoyed that I would actually have to study it myself instead of just growing up bilingual lol.

"Está curada" is mostly used up north, near the border tho. If you say it to someone who was born anywhere else in Mexico, chances are we won't understand. For instance, I was born and raised in Mexico City, and I first heard "está curado" last year (I was 21) when I made a trip to Cabo.
We say "curada" or "curado" in Sonora a lot... "ah qué curado" is very common jajaja I'm from Hermosillo, which is more than 150 miles from the border, by the way.
Northern Mexico is used as its weird or funny looking. Is when you see something or someone you can say está curado.

Here are some more slang phrases: Que pex = que onda/que pedo; equis!/nel! = no!; que hueva! For when u’re feeling lazy.

Oh wow this brings me back to my childhood. I'm first gen mexican american so growing up i hung around my very Mexican family and my parents friends. I would always here this slang on the regular. As i got older with school and work i started hanging out people of different ethnicity/background. The office i currently work at is all Vietnamese. Listening to it now I realize that i really haven't been around mexicans and the culture in a while. I need to get back to that

An alternative to “Qué padre” could also be “Que chido/Que chilo”. In the north we usually say chilo instead of chido

@@adrianai.altamirano3904 Tuve una mejor amiga que era del norte de Mexico, no me acuerdo si era del estado de SOnora o Sinaloa pero vivio un tiempo en ciudad de Mexico y despues se fue a Estados Unidos en donde me conocio y tenia el acento del sur decia, no manches wey, que onda, no mames y mas de eso hasta que se regreso a Sonora/Sinaloa y pasando tiempo cuando le hable la voz le habia cambiado total! Su voz se hizo mas fuerte y como demandante (no me conozco otra palabra) me decia "Que chilo" y en vez de muchacha me decia "mushasha" osea "la ch" sonaba como la s pero con un tonito aaaa no se si me explico, solo los del norte me diran a que me refiero,,la pronuncian muy diferente y aunque yo sabia que en el norte de Mexico mas que nada Sonora/Sinaloa hablan muchos asi (no todos) se me hacia raro pues yo la conoci diferente en voz jaja. Despues de todo ella nacio ahi en Sonora/Sinaloa y regreso ahi es logico hable asi, y me decia es que asi hablamos mucho los del norte. Muy linda ella y guapa ella asi como las chicas nortenias. My Grandma lives very close to there❤️ I’m bilingual and some times I feel embarrassed because I’ll visit my cousins and say something and then they’ll correct me on my pronunciation. The toughest part is that people expect you to be perfect in both languages and sometimes you just can’t do that.

I still don’t know how to feel about those parents who just decided to speak more English than Spanish , however I love the people like Her who at least try to learn!!! Love you! No como otros que nomas tienen la cara de nopal y they refuse to learn . Like yeah we get that it’s not your fault but embrace your culture !
I doubt it was a conscious decision on their part. Language just naturally gets lost after generations if you don't constantly reinforce it at a young age, and things like both parents working plus the kids spending most of the day surrounded by English can really affect their ability to grasp the language even if the parents do try to teach them.
Take me for example, my parents are immigrants and spoke to me in Spanish for the most part, but they just weren't around enough when I was young and I didn't have any Spanish community around to reinforce what I did learn so I don't feel very comfortable speaking it even though I do understand it.
I’m 2nd generations but my mom didn’t teach us Spanish bc she wanted to practice with me and my sister to speak English. Plus since she was a single parent and didn’t had no family here she had to find way to learn to speak English, which made her a teacher assistant when we were young to starting her own cleaning business and it’s not like she forgot her culture but she know what it was like to feel discriminated for being Hispanic and didn’t want us to go through the same experience she did...her English isn’t perfect but she can have a full on conversation with you and she have some troubles for saying the words wrong(for example she says “waterhouse” instead if “warehouse” and her clients would look at her as if she just curse at them
Now my mom didn’t act like “those people” bc she stills talk to us in Spanish here and there and I could read and speak it (even though my grammar is soo wrong or I’m just saying the word sooo wrong) and we’ll make pupusa y tamales de gallinas, y pan con pollo but we dont have that community, bc I have friends who are Korean, Iranian, Filipino, Nigerian, Irish, etc
My point is to not lump all those parents that teach their kids English then Spanish bc we have different stories
Jen_ GreatGuys I respect all stories . Look you said your mom speaks it to you guys; so y’all know it some. However my point is I don’t know how to feel about those parents that choose to only speak/teach them English .
I have heard stories about the earlier immigrants that because of Americans if you spoke your language you would get in trouble.
That’s understandable but even in those cases because of my prideful roots . I would at least told my kids “okay we’ll only speak Spanish at home”. I understand the would be scare etc . But (excuse my language) fuck all those pendejos that think America is one religion, one language , one culture. You got to be proud of the blood that runs in your veins .
Elena HC my mom didn’t teach us Spanish not bc she was scared but bc if she wanted to succeed as the 1st generation to a new country, she had to learn the culture and the language to achieve as a single parent who happens to be latina... and I mean we didn’t speak it at home until I was in High School and I was lowkey one of those kid que se creer mucho to the point were I don’t even remember telling my tio to learn English bc everyone speak English 🤦🏻♀️ (I wanted to slap myself after learning that myself) but that’s bc I was a brat that grew up in a black community until my high school where I was put in Ap Spanish and had help from some of the ESL kids
But now that I’m older I love my pride as a Mexican-Salvadorian who was born in America, and I love it and I hate those that believe that America is the best or ”white wash” or have that ignorant mentality that think they can say ”Speak American bc we’re from America” And have that “safe mentality” bc they supported the republican/trump administration 🙄🙄

That’s ok it’s super easy the same way you pronounced it its most likely the way you write it. Don’t learn the castellano bullshit it’s a little more old school but no one really uses. I had never heard "me pichas" until I had a boyfriend from Sinaloa. In Sonora it was more common to say "me disparas".
What does that mean tho?
Anton “me pichas” or “me disparas” are the same thing but I guess depending from what part of Mexico those phrase are used more. Anyways it means can you pay or help me out with the remaining cost like invite me to a drink or dinner etc. Basically they got you covered
