this ad was apparently the longest running in new zealand history - first aired in 1975 (before i was born) and i can remember it still airing in the 80s and still running until the mid 90s
Actually they paid the actors a pittance. After twenty years or so of use they sued, and part of the agreement was that it would no longer be broadcast in NZ.
I'll tell you how effective this ad is: When I was a kid and my taste buds were underdeveloped I didn't like the taste of Crunchie bars and knew to avoid them. Despite that seeing this ad always made me want one even though I knew I didn't like them. Fortunately my taste buds developed and I have since gained a liking for them. In fact it's still selling them; every so-often I come back to this ad and watching it usually ends in me buying a Crunchie within the next couple of days or so.
This ad is a classic, takes me right back to my childhood. But the best part for me has to be the real life cop just smiling away happy to be apart of the chaos.
i remember this train stopping in upper hutt back in 1993 during the may school holidays - It was a Saturday afternoon pissing down with rain and the "ticket collector" was masquerading as the middle eastern guy at 0:57 saying "your ticket is a crunchie bar wrapper". epic start to the school holidays for us Third formers (year 9s) despite the crap-ass weather
@@chrisheffernan3998 I was 6 in '93 and remember going down to the Rangiora train yard to ride it. Got a commemorative photo (sadly gone long ago). Nice sunny day for us.
Trying to work out what movies the clips are from. I think the WW2 movie was "Von Ryan's Express" and the Indian standing on the rail-wagon shooting to the rear might be "Cheyenne" (1949)
The ad won't play again on TV due to the fact that they stole/copied/ripped off a whole lot of movie material to complete the ad (one of the movies was Von Ryans Express). Playing this again on TV would result in Cadbury being sent letters by the sort of lawyers whom own medium sized islands.
In the early 1980s there was another Crunchy advert, I remember it was a big deal at the time, they did a premiere for it the first time they showed it. It was a post apocalyptic setting, does anyone remember it?
Rubbish! This ad played on NZ TV & in movie theaters for over 4 years. Scenes from "Von Ryan's Express" were used by permission of Mark Robson Productions and 20thC Fox. Scenes from Cheyenne (WB) and Geronimo (MGM) was also by permission. The only footage with no consent was two short sepia toned B&W clips at 1:01 from a 1914 silent movie "Sitting Bull the Hostile Indian Chief". The production company (American Rotograph) has not existed since 1915. The Company Principals were unknown.

They should bring it back! I didnt realise it was from the 70s 😃
@@helloworld441 i doubt it - tv has gone to the crapper in new zealand - adverts included. youll never get an advert like this again
@@themadmgtow5196Too insensitive to the Navajo!
Asd a kid from the 90s, I can confirm that!
I remember this seeing this ad on telly and I wasn't born til the late 80s
I think we blew NZ's budget for 50 years making this but it was sure worth it. Let the next generation make a better one.
Actually they paid the actors a pittance. After twenty years or so of use they sued, and part of the agreement was that it would no longer be broadcast in NZ.
Takes me way back. This ad was real famous back then.
in fact, world famous in New Zealand :-)
Nostalgia. My entire childhood I saw this ad so often. Go Grandma. lol
Was my fave thing to watch as a kid. Thanks for making this. The song - absolutely ace!!
Aaaaand, Hugo said you go......

For some reason I randomly remembered this advertisement from when I was a little kid. So cool to see it's been uploaded.
This ad is a classic, takes me right back to my childhood. But the best part for me has to be the real life cop just smiling away happy to be apart of the chaos.
This ad should be studied by aspiring marketers everywhere.
Classic ad - brings back memories of watching TV in the 1970s. Those were the days...
Best thing on the TV for literally decades. DECADES
I guess the one dislike is from Nestle's Milky Bar Kid - missed out on all the action.
It's the perfect advert. Tells the story, but importantly, keeps you interested throughout.
BEST ADD OF ALL TIME!!
Ad**
I remember saving up to buy a crunchie bar just to gt the wrapper to have a ride on the Crunchie train :)
I did too but we never made it on the train because it was such a frenzy of people waiting to get on the train :(

You just don't get awesome ads like this anymore.
I wish they'd bring this commercial back!
It was Iconic all right. It ran right through into the early '00s (a shortened version but that's still quite an achievement)
A blast from the past

I realise this ad is not exactly modern, but is there any chance anyone has a better copy?
A great classic NZ TV Ad alongside the Europa Travelling on ad as the greatest New Zealand has produced.
One of my all time fav old NZ TV ads

A friend sent me a bag of Crunchie bars from NZ and they arrived this morning! :-)
WoW a blast from the past is this add - & yep - just had a crunchie bar myself today too (still taste great)
My favourite ad. Such a shame it got pulled because the actors sued. They should have just been happy they were still on TV and could show their kids
