    I think the solution to string pins is for one of our local alleys to make the investment of changing to string pins, bowlers quit going there, and they quickly go out of business. Then we can go back to what has been going on for generations - making bowling better for bowlers.

    In my experience, the carry with string pins is less. The strings do put a little drag on them. There is a significant financial incentive for governing bodies and businesses to switch. The maintenance is much less expensive. Strings is where bowling is headed.

    There was a restaurant chain in Michigan called Bill Knapps. They were in every city and served "home cooked" meals and had been going since the 1940s. Then modern times came and the new management said all our customers are old people (league bowlers), we need to be like the other restaurant chains and quit with the fresh food approach and get a younger clientele (open bowlers). Poof they were gone.

    Last fall, my league's bowling center got string pins for the first time. And although I was aware of the competition/regulation mode (longer) strings vs the open bowl shorter ones, my understanding of their effect on pin carry was backwards. Whereas I thought that longer strings would more closely resemble freefalling pins, this season my average and that of many others here has taken a big hit. But over the holiday, I practiced in open bowl string mode, and my scores that day were way up due to better overall pin carry. So, I'm looking forward to your next video in open bowl mode with shorter strings to see if the pins are more forgiving for you too.

      @boomboomborrello 18 дней назад +3

      There has been research done in the difference between the two. And a year long study by the USBC about the difference and the findings were that there was little to no difference between the two. And no change in average with the bowler. I have personal experience with both and found only slight differences. But not enough to alter my average at all and the weird leaves you get in free fall are different from the leaves you get in string pins. If that makes sense.

    For me getting the ball to go straight when I needed to in order to make spares was vastly different than it is for pro bowlers today. Also I was as bowler that had a very unusual style of bowling. Instead of having different balls for different conditions and setups my solution was very unique. It was based on the fact that my talent is copying physical movement that I see others doing. So what I did was copied the styles of a variety of professional bowlers. Ones like Mark Roth, Earl Anthony (right hand), Dick Weber, Marshall Holman, Wayne Webb, etc... Each style gave me what I needed at the time I was using it. If I needed more break point control I went with Earl Anthony. If I needed less hook I used Dick Weber. For straight ball shot I developed my version of Marshall Holman's shot of topping the ball that worked for me even though It wasn't a truly accurate copy of his way of getting the ball to go straight it still worked for me.

    I have been following this for some time now. String pins are very different than free fall period. Unfortunately it is a matter of cost. Our center owner explained to me that he can not get parts for the setters, they are not making new setters ( can’t verify that), the cost to put new free fall setters in is almost a million dollars and would take many years to get back and lastly he can not find competent mechanics and pay them enough to keep them. Open bowling and leagues just don’t bring enough in. Fortunately he just put in a bar and Fridays and Saturday nights help a lot. I asked him honestly what supports the place. He said drinks and the kiddie game room.

      @ BTW, I tend to watch you bowl a lot. My style of bowling is more like yours that most of the male bowlers. So I get much more useful information from you as well as a lot of other women bowlers. I’m proud to say, I bowl like the ladies! I personally feel where a lot of the guys rely on revs and speed, the ladies rely on accuracy and repeatability. Also I wear a wrist support. I have pigeon wrists. No matter of work outs will keep my wrist from wobbling. So when I see many of my favorite women bowlers using them and my male bowlers eschew them, I laugh. I always say to them “ what scores are you postin”. Now you don’t use one. But I feel you would not laugh at us who do. Anyway, thanks for your videos.

    I couldn’t care less about strings vs free fall. String pins being certified is just USBC in survival mode. If USBC said no certification, bowling proprietors would say Bye Bye USBC.
    Anyways, my issue is bowlers trying to communicate by using the word “energy”
    There is a way to compute the energy in the ball at release using velocity, rev rate, and mass of the ball.
    Likewise energy can be determine as the ball enters the pins using the same formula.
    You will find there is no appreciable loss of energy on good or bad shots.
    If using up energy where the problem, the solution should be throw the ball with more energy.

    • @bowlwithVALue
      @bowlwithVALue  14 дней назад

      It is interesting to think about the energy transfer within the pins! Not many people pay attention to that.

    • @mikewhite735
      @mikewhite735 14 дней назад

      @ it’s momentum transfer.
      Since it’s not an elastic collision, energy is lost to heat and sound as the ball impacts pins and pins impact pins.

    The FACT that Bowlero owns the PBA and is mandating PBA bowlers can’t say anything negative about them is proof enough. This is all about saving the largest bowling alley chain some money by converting to them has nothing to with making the game better. Bowlers throwing 450 + revs at 19 miles an hour creat me so much pin reaction that can’t never be reproduced when the pins are attached to something that inhibits that free-fall action.

    • @RysterARCEE
      @RysterARCEE 17 дней назад

      Bowlero gets blamed for a lot of things. Some claims are accurate and others are just nonsense. String pins are a response to the industry as a whole looking for cost savings. Plain and simple. Bowlero owns 15% of the bowling centers in the world. The other 85% are still independently owned. Bowlero doesn't have enough power to "force" this kind of change in an entire industry. The independents are going this direction as well simply to survive.

    • @Slinginghotlead007
      @Slinginghotlead007 17 дней назад

      @ Bowlero owns the PBA. I’d say that gives them plenty of power to make changes to it and the game. It creates a conflict of interest. They own AMF who is sponsoring the string pins during the PBA events and then by making the Pros bowl on them this will help to introduce them to people in a way that says they are okay. Like I said, this isn’t about making the game better, It’s about saving money. How about the PBA/Bowlero find more sponsors, create better content on SM platforms and promote their brand and players to larger audiences. Right now the individual players are doing more for the popularity and growth of bowling than the PBA. They are creating better content for their consumers than the PBA itself. Why not tap into that online presence. Honestly someone needs to create a competitor to the PBA like LIV did for the PGA. I get that the normal open play bowler doesn’t care about string pins vs free-fall and that string pins aren’t going away. I’m just saying that we can’t pretend it’s making the game better when knowing that it’s just to save money so that bowling alleys can stay open. It’s simply not a good look for Pros to bowl on these and act like there’s no difference between the two. I was at a PBA over/under 50 tournament and none of the open bowlers even knew that legends of the game were bowling right there in the same house. Like WRW and Simonsen to name a couple. I’d say that’s what’s broken with the PBA and the game. Bowl TV wasn’t even there. These are just my thoughts because I care about the health and growth of the game on a professional level.

      I am on a very competitive league where our 200 bowlers average in the 200s ($20k for first place, paid waiting list to join). String pins would turn us into a recreational league. Our Bowlero makes so much money off our league from linage and $8 beers. If they changed to string pins we would immediately move houses and their profits would plummet.

      Interesting you said carry stinks. Do you have both options?

    String pins just dont carry the same. I guess they are fine for non tournament situations, but i think their different reaction to the ball & to gravity should keep them out of competitive bowling situations. As someone who has been bowling since they were a little kid, the difference was immediately obvious....i knew something was off before i knew it was because of string pins. Its just too big an effect on the game to ignore, and should be used.......SPARE-ingly. See what i did there...

    • @bowlwithVALue
      @bowlwithVALue  14 дней назад

      I see what you did there! The game is changing and USBC is adapting to the change. This isn’t a permanent change for all centers. Just a viable option for those that need more reliability.

    I prefer the crazy Tarzan strings that get pins swinging all over the place and knocking everything down with ease.
    I mean, if you are going to bowl on strings you might as well bowl in carnival sideshow mode.

    These string pins don't seem to move around on the deck much, they just fall back into the pit' Not the same as free fall pins, didn't see a messenger not one. And what pin fell in the fourth frame between ball 1 and ball 2? Nice vid, but I hope string pins are a not to soon passing fad, afraid they'll make bowling more of a dying sport than video games.

    • @bowlwithVALue
      @bowlwithVALue  16 дней назад +1

      Especially not on this mode. I think that was the 2-8 frame? The 5 pin slid between the 2-8 and didn’t trip either one. Seemed like a typical leave I would see on free fall pins

    I hate string pins. Is this the usbc way of cutting down on honor scores? There's no pin action no messengers they thud when you hit them. If the usbc wants to lose more bowlers and have leagues the priorities center and close down centers due to no business this would be sad. I do blame the usbc for this garbage. I see my balls and shoes possibly not being used again. Hope this doesn't happen nationwide

    • @bowlwithVALue
      @bowlwithVALue  14 дней назад

      I don’t think this will be a nationwide change. There are a lot of people against them. USBC is doing what they can to help approve string pins closest to free fall. Tune in Sunday at 6pm to see the difference from USBC competition mode to casual play mode.

    Who cares where you're standing and throwing. Completely irrelevant. Even if I were there bowling as well. IF we want to see bowling continue, we will have to accept some level of change/innovation. Strings save the centers a lot of money. Way too many centers closing, it's all about economic viability.

      In golf, driver technology helps you hit the ball farther and straighter. They combat that by making fairways longer and slimmer. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can change in the bowling industry.

      @@garybryant19 Not the case here in the Philippines. All of our centers are still running free fall pinsetters and none of them struggle to keep open. Face it, if malls in America were struggling to keep open, so does Bowling Centers. My home country has the exact opposite scenario with the malls here booming and because of that, most Bowling Centers were built inside of them.

      The plastic coating on pins introduced in the mid 1950’s created livelier pin action. I wonder what the consensus was at that time amongst bowlers who had to adapt to the change. In my opinion, that timeframe was when messengers were created.
