  • In this video I showcase how long you can film in ProRes 4k 60fps.
Yes shooting the iPhone 15 Pro in ProRes takes up a lot of storage and uses a lot of resources but is ProRes actually useful without overheating? Please leave a comment if you have any questions.

curious to see if you use the black magic camera app and record log in h265. Sizes are so much smaller for 95% of the quality.

Your comment about Florida being the hottest place on Earth made me laugh out loud, but this was a good video. Cheers from Phoenix!

Nice video, what type of prores were you shooting? I wonder if it shuts down faster in prores HQ than in LT for example, I also wonder if it shuts down faster in 4k 30 fps using the internal storage since the internal storage would also heat up while recording.

Have you done this test with other phone brands ?
    Thanks Michael for your reviews.

I havent. No need to do it with any other phones. No other phone shoots in ProRes 4k 60fps

What Type C cable you use for SSD?

What iOS version was installed on the phone? The 17.0.3 addressed the overheating issue partially, but some are saying the 17.1 Beta has totally fixed overheating 😉

Well I’ve never had a problem with my phone when it comes to overheating in normal use. All the test I ran are in the same day. Except for the first one. You would have to fully watch the video to understand. So the firmware makes no since. I also am on the latest version though.

@@MichaelJohnsonProductions Yeah, just like in mirrorless cameras, in-camera recording has always been a limitation because of overheating. I loved your test results, thanks for doing them!

My iPhone 📱 15pro max the stock camera app just stops recording after about 20 min if I plug in power it records longer 38 min(in a test) but the footage brightness dims considerably and is so dark as to be nearly unusable any ideas

@@MichaelJohnsonProductions it's kinda vague and you're using accessories which further adds to the confusion.

@@MichaelJohnsonProductionsI mean kinda, you say 20 minutes, but you shut it off in 20 minutes
To do a real test you needed to at least try to go an hour to see if it would fail

I tested this. I bought the iPhone 15 Pro Max a week ago and configured it to record 4K at 60 fps in Apple Log format. My SSD was the Samsung T7 1 TB capacity. The physical conditions were: in my living room, about 76 degrees F temperature of the room, no sun involved. The iPhone started at about 70% battery life and recorded for 1 hour and 27 minutes and only stopped recording because the battery died. The recorded file was 965 GB in size.
So then I ordered a Belkin Connect USB-C 4-port hub which has a power delivery (PD) port that I plugged a 65 W USB-C power adapter into. I don't mean to over-explain, but it's the port that's labeled "PD", the first port on there. I plugged in the 1 TB T7 SSD into the fourth port on there, and of course plugged the Belkin into the iPhone. No power concerns now that it's powered. The iPhone recorded for just under 1 hour and 49 minutes, and it filled up 999 GB of the T7, and it stopped because it ran out of storage.
When launching the camera app and going to video, it says it can record for "72 minutes", and if somebody knows what this "72 minutes" is about, please tell me, but somehow it does record longer.
A future test I'd like to do is record video with motion. This test above was just aimed at my living room window with an occasional cat jumping up on the window sill, but otherwise no motion in the video. Would be interesting to see if the possible duration to fit on a 1 TB SSD would be any less if motion is added to the video.
