  • No need to sugarcoat things. Pearls are slaves on Homeworld, but why is this? Who does this compare to the history of our own world?

Pearls are slaves, I've seen people try and sugarcoat it and call them maids...but nah, they're slaves.

Xytonius Edit: didn't notice the word imprisoned.
Yes, if someone is my prisoner, and I make them a maid/servant, then they are a slave. So in other words
PEARLS ARE SLAVES. DON'T SUGAR-COAT IT.
      Old:
      A maid isn't a slave.
Maids are paid labor instead of property, and they're human rights are respected.
Slaves however do not have either of those.

hoda ahmad I've heard "slavery" uttered in plenty of kid's shows. Samurai Jack, Code Lyoko, Avatar: TLA, Spongebob Squarepants, Adventure Time, both Star Wars: TCW and Rebels. It's actually a pretty common story element in shows with continuity oriented around conflict. Doesn't matter which audience they're aimed at.

Plus when it was during the war, as shown by a mental image during the episode where Pearl is sword training Connie, it's discussed that Pearl constantly came back to fight and protect Rose, so she was fast enough then to keep fighting.

they said they choose how long they want to take to regenrate, pearl personally chooses to give herself alot of time.

    • @hunterwilliams5061
      @hunterwilliams5061 6 лет назад +5

Yeah. Their regeneration time is a personal trait. And Pearl only took so long the last time because her hologram was active. The moment the holo was destroyed, Pearl was able to reform. Also, Pearl is a meticulous person. She'd take careful consideration to every detail of her reformation. Amethyst is a sloppier person. She doesn't feel like putting in all this effort into super symmetrical, perfect to a T formation. She just wants to reform. We haven't seen many other gems get poofed, so it's reckless to make assumptions about the standard reforming time of gems.

So I've been thinking... In the show we are only told that Rose shattered Pink Diamond by the homeworld gems (primarily from era 1), but what if its been a cover and the whole time White Diamond was the one to do it? For starters Eyeball Ruby is the only gem to say she was actually there to see Rose commit the act, but how truthful have the Rubies been?
Secondly I say this because in season 3 when we see Bismuth and Steven fight Bismuth says Rose said the same thing and that she wouldn't use the breaking point to shatter a gem. If that is the case then what happened to change that idea.
I question if White Diamond is the one to do it because this is the one gem we haven't heard of and due to the fact the murals look almost as if White diamond would be God and Pink is a fallen angel. Could White Diamond have used the rebellion as a cover to get rid of the weakest diamond? Especially if Pink saw the Earth as a beautiful place like her subjects have seemed to.

I had a thought just now. u know how pearl's aren't really gem stones, they're like, formed differently from oysters and stuff. as cited in the show peridot said amethyst is the only one who's actually a gem, implying pearl's aren't "gems". what if pearl's weren't actually made by the diamond authority, and were a separate society, possibly on homeworld but not created by the diamond authority, that were conquered and forced into slavery? just a thought. either way, these parallels are very interesting, and i really like the theory of pearl's being some kind of older model warrior. i totally agree that pearls are slaves and not just servants.

That theorist Maybe she is really defective because of her gem shape. She might have already known that she was defective by the time she was made and decided to join Rose Quartz because her defectiveness inspired her to join Rose and be a Crystal Gem. Maybe Rose saw her defectiveness and her potiential of being more than a Pearl. With that motivation, Pearl decided to join Rose as she saw what Rose meant and wanted to be a Crystal Gem......

aռռɨɛ ʟєoňһѧяԀţ eh peridot has her metal bending but that's more like amethyst with her shame shifting. Peridot is yet to summon a weapon and I can see several cracks in this theory. Firstly, it would be far more useful to them for gems to be able to use their weapons, especially combat gems. It would be a waste of potential and resources to give gems an ability that would never be used.

I don't really understand why people hate Pearl so much. She has gone through SO much and grown as a character more than any other character in the show (even Steven). The way Pearl acted in the flashbacks (like Story for Steven) is understandable since she has been for there for Rose for thousands of years, and now someone just swooped in and Rose left her. I bet a lot of people can relate to Pearl, and that is why she is my favorite character.

It implied in 'Sworn to the Sword'' that Pearl was poofed many times in the heat of battle protecting Rose and I don't think it took weeks to come back every-time that happened. Pearl just took a long time when it happened in the episode you were referring to because she knew she could take her time and is a perfectionist, I think in the middle of a war she wouldn't be concerned with changing the look of her form and would just come back immediately.
Also I find it odd that anyone would refute you that Pearl's are slaves on Homeworld, I mean that's been fairly obvious for a long time.

Great video! Just wanted to point out that when during sworn to the sword, it was shown that pearl could actually regenerate just as fast as amethyst and any other gem. In Steven the Sword Fighter, pearl took her time because there wasnt any immediate threat and she liked to be precise. Amethyst even took her time after she kept getting poofed, albeit much shorter, but that is due to her personality being brash and hasty

I've had conversations about this subject with fellow SU fans, and I'm glad you've brought it up as well, Slice.
I love Pearl so much. Slavery as a concept breaks my heart and is one of the reasons why I try to be good to everyone I meet, simply because you don't know what they've been through until you're made aware. I also identify with Pearl's desire to be perfect and please others.
Pearl's past shouldn't define her. She can and has improved herself and it inspires me in my own struggles, whether it's something small like feeling concerned about a big assignment, or something much worse like self doubt.
Pearl is one of my many inspirations because she was able to take her situations and do something about them. No more wallowing in self pity. She stood up, tried, and succeeded.

Another you overlooked in your apology about the last episode:Pearl said that the concept of being a knight was human, she learned about the HUMAN concept of being a knight. This would mean that some semblance of an age of iron happened in Steven Universe.
She also said she learned about this while fighting in the war, which means that along with the armor of the fallen humans atleast had diverse war based cultures at the time.

I don't think Pearls were soldiers just because they can summon weapons. All gems can summon weapons in some capacity (even Lapis' wings and Sapphire's ice could count). They're just physical manifestations of a gem's personality. They're kind of like spirit animals for gems.

I'd like to think that Pearls are slaves, but are also expected to not only clean and do basic things, but be Bodyguards as well. We see during the rebellion that our Pearl constantly threw herself in front of Rose to protect her. Even though she's said before that she got the inspiration from knights, I like to think that is a Pearl's purpose when their master gems are threatened. My reasoning kinda stems from Pearl having a hard time getting away from her intended purpose. She's branched out and is great at a lot of different things, but at the end of the day she's cleaning up after everybody.

While Pearl did take a long time to regenerate, it's most likely because Holo-Pearl was still in existence, and it was draining energy so she couldn't regenerate. Note how Pearl reforms almost instantly after Holo-Pearl is defeated.

I think all Pearls are capable of summoning a weapon and have at least some skill in combat. If a Diamond or a high ranking gem of social standing who had a Pearl were to be in mortal danger then the Pearl would logically be the last line of defense between them and being shattered. If Pearls are made in mass Kindergardens like other gems or if they are made on demand by high class gems remains to be seen.
Eyeball Ruby expressed that she my even be given a Pearl for bringing Rose *Steven* to homeworld.
But I do think all Pearls have weapons and at least some combat skills in order to protect whoever owns them, since it seems Pearls are reserved for those of great worth or in great power.
Possibly why Our Pearl got so upset at the mention of Pink Diamond being shattered, not just because it was a horrific event that shaped the entire war and the Corruption of Gems, but because if like the other Diamonds she kept her Pearl at her side constantly then that Pearl may just have been shattered by Rose, or Pearl may have witnessed it or without realizing played some part in it to help Rose. (seeing as Our Pearl held Rose in such high regard for treating her as an equal and not of lesser value based on her gem)
If it is true then Pearls are also a liability if not kept "in place" by their Gems. A pearl could easily turn and shatter their owner or even their Diamond if not kept in check by the constant propaganda that a Pearl is only to serve and only has a place as a lowly slave under a Higher gem.
After Our Pearl took the side of the Rebellion there may have been a change in how Pearls were made to make sure they had less summoning abilities or were at least made to feel even lower than Era One Pearls were as to deter another uprising. Somewhat like slavery mixed with abusive relationships. They are only of worth if under the control of a Higher gem, that they are to be grateful for being allowed to exist and even may be subject to emotional manipulation to keep them constantly in place.
I feel like the actions of Our Pearl in the rebellion may have led to a massive shift in how Pearls were viewed and made on homeworld since Blue Diamond was there and may have seen Our Pearl fighting along with Rose. The Rebellion no doubt ended up having a backlash for all Pearls on Homeworld. Hopefully in the new hour long special we can see a Homeworld Pearl and Steven can interact with her

Well... I did some research and... Pearls aren't gems that grow like sapphires or quarzes.
They are made by the salvia of seashells. Some things not belonging to the body or being food is conserved as a sales pearl to make the seashell safe.
This is why I think why Pearls are treated as slaves: because they aren't of the same kind as any other gems and maybe even easier to reproduce - since they are given away for some heroism without that deed further described

do you think that maybe pearls were used as spies before they became slaves to the diamonds? Pearls are slender, light on their feet, and agile; these traits would make them the perfect spies: and for weapon summoning, (assuming all era 1 pearls can summon weapons) this would be a last resort in the event that the spy pearl was found out. Maybe spy pearls were made for each diamond so that they could make sure that no court ever grew too powerful (ex; yellow pearl keeping tabs on Blue, Pink, and White Diamond's court).
Or maybe there were rebellions before Rose's Rebellion that resulted in new colonies that were not under the diamonds' control, and each diamond's pearl was sent there to spy on these break-away colonies under the disguise of a renegade pearl, like ours.
I'm probably super wrong but hey, its an idea

I always kind of thought the whole thing with pearls was that they aren't necessarily from the ground. They're made by oysters and clams. Though we don't know how they're made in SU. though Peri mentions in an earlier episode that they are made to order or manufactured. So who knows if they come from space clams? and since they are the closest gem to "organics" then they must be made to be lower than all other gems? who knows.

Let's assume pearl is an era 1 pearl, and lets say that only era 1 pearl have powers. But why would they remove their powers? 1. Our pearl showed to be a good fighter and a threat. 2. Maybe pearl was the one to actually shatter Pink diamond? If rose and pearl were the only ones there, rose could have taken the blame to protect pearl.

i agree that the pearl are looked down lower and are servants, however, if you argue they are slaves, you would have to argue that All gems are slaves. saying: "they sing and dance on command with out payment! slavery!" I say, "Jasper, Lapis, and Peridot went to earth to check on the cluster without payment! slavery!!"
just because actors and actress's aren't solving world hunger doesn't mean that they aren't doing their job.
I do agree that the pearls are definitely the lowest class though, similar to a budist system. (royalty, rich, diplomatic, working, poor) This system is built so that the gems can have a little more self identity, considering you only have to look left or right to find another of yourself. imagine being in a world like that, where literally you have ten thousand of you standing in a line prepared to do what you need to do, and if your not perfect, your worthless. The thought terrifies me, perhaps it scares pearl as well.
You don't have to agree with me, but i thought i would share my opinion.
Thank you very much for all of your work, and i look forward to your next video!!

D Eli nah pearls are slaves whereas other gems such as rubies and quartzes are soldiers and have better standing in Homeworld, example being Jasper as she is considered the ultimate quartz. Now if you are pearl on the other hand, your status doesn't allow you to go up the rank like soldier type gems can. Eyeball (a ruby) said if she turned Steven over to the diamonds she would have been rewarded a pearl and a higher ranking, that is not something a pearl can never achieve since they are property meant to be owned by another. They exist to show off a high ranking gems position and that is all. Now we have gems like Peridot who is a lowly gem in Homeworld eyes but they are not treated like pearls are because they have a meaningful purpose, to maintain the kindergarten. Also we can see by the way other gems treat Pearl they expect them to speak allow when spoken to and to act when ordered to to things, like when Holly Blue expected Pearl to open the door and even called her "chatty." Peridot held great animosity towards Pearl in the beginning because she felt they a pearl wasn't competent enough to be on her level and was greatly upset when Pearl bested her. So not only are pearls slaves they are not even a "gem" to low ranked gems either because that's how little they mean on Homeworld.

I cannot gush enough about this vid. I think this is probably one of the best you've ever done. I had never thought about parallel these particular parallels of our Pearl's toxic mentalities, and yet!
To further comparison, Jasper referring to our Pearl as "defective" brings to mind "Drapetomania" - possibly the detail we've been obsessing over was just "racism"?
One of the things I've really come to appreciate about Steven Universe are the many layers to it; there's a lot on the surface but the show rewards digging deeper and thinking about the points it raises. Honestly, in this sense I think it has better writing/producing than most shows aimed at adults.
Please keep up the good work! X

To add on to this, maybe the reason why pearls have fighting ability is because long ago, when the diamond authority was conquering a LOT of planets, homeworld was in a kind of baroque period. At this time, fighting was not a large part of society, because homeworld was so wealthy and overpowered that the building of the galactic empire was easy. So most fighting was a kind of art form... enter pearls. Their small, dainty stature was perfect for elite royals to watch them for entertainment. A kind of fencing or performance could have been their original purpose. Now, during a resource shortage, quarts gems are simply more practical then pearls for conquest, but pearls are still servants.

You don't have to be a brutal pile of muscle to fight, like the amethysts and rubies. Graceful, light, and slim gems are just as good at fighting, in one-on-one situations. I'm

One thing I was thinking of is how Rubies and Sapphires are essentially the same gem, taken from geology: "Most people don't realize that ruby and sapphire are both gems of the mineral corundum. Both of these gemstones have the same chemical composition and the same mineral structure. Trace amounts of impurities determine if a gem corundum will be a brilliant red ruby or a beautiful blue sapphire. It is surprising that "impurities" can produce such wonderful results!"
So why are the social standings of Ruby and sapphire so different
