Slobertooth 13 they had an amazing opportunity to make both lapis and peridot grow as characters together. they could have build so much with them, (platonic or romantic, it doesn't matter) they had so many options to make her grow as a character, to see more depth in her 'broken character' role, to do something with her, and yet they barely use her, and show her as a edgy teenager when she just got out of a toxic relationship with jasper :/

Nella Paulina Maybe Lapis isn't the real broken character; after all, didn't Miss Sugar say something about Jasper hating herself and her purpose for existence?? Maybe we still have yet to see how the crewniverse handles a truly broken character...Every one of them has their own level of brokenness, but Steven's has so been the worst...what if that Jasper redemption Ain't far away??

There's also the problem that Rebecca has said that Malachite was MUTUALLY abusive, BUT the show insists on painting Jasper like the big bad abuser and lapis as the poor fragile victim. Steven KNEW Lapis dragged Jasper into the ocean and was potentially hurting her and DIDN'T CARE, treating lapis as the hero despite the fact that he claims he doesn't like seeing other gems get hurt. He's willing to ask why a Lapis acts the way she does but won't ask Jasper. Mr. 'everyone deserves a chance' will do so for everyone except Jasper, because that's what Rebecca wants to do with her, despite the fact that there's supposedly 'no villian' .Why do you think so many people paint Jasper as the only abuser in the relationship and Lapis as the fragile flower that apparently did nothing wrong? Rebecca says it's not black and white when she clearly is painting it that way.

It seems that decisions and actions (conscious or not) of lapis are always the most convenient for the serie:
"We need to convert the episodic plot to linear" appears Lapis
"We need Jasper to disappear for a while, but not to be defeated" form malachite
"We control the cluster, now we need jasper as a villain" laspis can not keep control of the fusion, overcome malachite and jasper is free
"Now that lapis is free, we can not let her participate in the fights, because she is strong and the conflict would resolve very quickly" we give her a lazy personality, we make her never officially forgive the crystal gems, and we leave her in the barn . (Sorry if there are errors, I used google translate)

      @Jdudec367 3 года назад +2

I don't remember any times where the first one happens except for her debut appearance. But that isn't convenient, it's just a transition.
Convenient? I mean all the characters were already there so...while convenient it makes sense.
This was already hinted at before though that Lapis can't keep control of the fusion. This would have happened regardless of the timing but the timing should have been spread out better compared to how we got it with it happening at the same time that the cluster was being dealt with. This one really isn't Convenient as it was always gonna happen.
Lapis had to deal with her own inner conflict really and learn to trust others first. So basically they didn't wanna rush it. So this wasn't convenient. Wouldn't say that Lapis's personality traits contain her being lazy or that I would describe her personality as being a lazily made personality. So that wasn't convenient either . But her forgiving the crystal gems? Happened off screen and was convenient. Having her be in the barn made sense but overall it lasted too long. I wouldn't call it convenient though.
So overall there were 2 instances here of conveniences and 4 of the other times weren't conveniences.

Prepare yourselves for this novel of a comment:
Here is the big point here.
One could understand WHY Lapis acts the way she does because of her trauma and how toxic behavior can stem from it...
    HOWEVER
in terms of the writing of her character and the interactions between characters, this toxic behavior is being enabled. The behavior is neither encouraged nor discouraged by the CG. Realistically, no matter how understandable of a reason you have (like trauma) to release toxic behavior THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES.
Now keep in mind that this is a show aimed towards children and many of the plots relate to consent, relationships and mental health. In terms of relationships, it is made very clear that Lapis and Jasper's relationship was toxic.
However when it comes to Lapis' behavior that is uncalled for, like: breaking peridot's recorder, brushing off Connie and Greg when they reminded her of the damage she did (trying to drown Connie and breaking Greg's leg)
NO ONE suggests she should apologize for it and Lapis still hasn't apologized/owned up to her actions.
    Thus this is teaching kids:
~If you take out your emotions on others, people will understand because you're going through a rough time and an apology isn't neccessary so you can brush it off and act like nothing happened
~If someone you know is traumatized and taking out their emotions on you, endure it, be patient and be there for them, try to encourage them even if you are being hurt in the process because their healing is important even if it sacrifices your well being temporarily
    WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE
The problem of Steven constantly sacrificing his own well being to fix the problems of others was only touched on when Amethyst says that it is unfair for everyone to dump their issues on Steven.
The CG are capable of stepping in and talking to Lapis as they have done before with Peridot.
The CG very clearly talk with characters like Peridot about her behavior like when Peridot refuses to acknowledge Garnet because she is a fusion or talks down to Pearl because of the purpose of pearls on homeworld. Homeworld culture was all peridot knew her ENTIRE EXISTANCE before she became a crystal gem and it was understandable why she would act that way considering her lack of adjustment towards the cultural differences between Homeworld and Earth. HOWEVER just because Peridot's behavior was understandable did not stop her behavior from having consequences and it did not stop the CG from stepping in and letting her know that the behavior wasn't acceptable, thus giving Peridot an opportunity to learn and grow as a character.
The same sort of scenario could easily be applied to Lapis' story:
Lapis showing unacceptable behavior and someone stepping in to tell her that behavior is unacceptable.
It would easily giver her an opportunity to grow or at least get Lapis to begin to process the realization of how she is influencing others.
Lapis understandably has been traumatized and abused but she has also lashed out on other characters for not knowing how to handle her emotions. It is a complex situation because healing from abuse is touchy, can be triggering, easily prone to relapses and healing is a long process often of trial, error and persistance.
As someone with severe PTSD I understand these types of emotions that Lapis has and it hit very close to home with me when she was first introduced. However any unacceptable behavior I had as a side effect of my trauma did not stop me from having to own up to my actions and it certainly did not stop others from letting me know what behavior was not acceptable.
The CG seem to understand that lapis is traumatized but none of them step in and tell Lapis when her behavior is unacceptable, and thus the CG acting as bystanders enabling the behavior. Characters such as Peridot even end up walking on eggshells around Lapis because of Lapis' tendency to lash out or show strong dissapproval/detachment.
One could say that Lapis is as powerful as she is emotional, leading to her potential outburst to be scary and full of consequences, which would be a reason the CG would not step in to let matters become potentially worse.
If that is the case, the writers need to make it more clear so that kids CLEARLY understand that Lapis' behavior is still unacceptable and that the CG aren't just allowing this type of behavior to occur without reason.
The relationship between Lapis and the CG is rocky yet during the baseball game they seemed totally fine around each other??
If the point of their relationship being still rocky was made clear and consistant, then it would be understandable why characters who are used to dealing with emotions (like Garnet) would not step forward.
Out of all of the CG Lapis is closest to Steven and more receptive to him, thus Lapis talking with Steven would be a prime opportunity for Lapis to have character growth or to at least set up a moment for Lapis to reflect upon later on when she truly understands the issue and comes around.
Steven may not truly understand what Lapis has been through, but he could show Lapis ways to cope with emotions that do not involve hurting others and teach her how to recognize/acknowledge when she does hurt others (instead of brushing it off like she did with Connie).
    Summary:
Trauma does not excuse toxic behavior, BOTTOM LINE.
Trauma is an EXPLAINATION not and EXCUSE.
Lapis needs to develop by learning to own up to her actions and at least acknowledge the consequences to them.

Lapis, even now, reminds me too much of a friend I used to have. A friend who was abusive to me and the people around her, and her only excuse was "I've been treated worse". To speak out against her was to say her trauma wasn't worth anything.
When offered help she needed to better herself, she turned it away because she liked being able to get people's pity and getting them to let her do as she wants. I was dumb and actually let her abuse me, because in my mind I figured what I was feeling because of her was nothing compared to the hurt she had felt. Part of me now, though I hate her to this day, even misses how she treated me some times. When times were good.
Lapis is, without a doubt, an abusive and toxic person. I am not defending Jasper either- she's awful as well- but while Jasper had a goal in mind when fusing, Lapis found entertainment in making Jasper suffer. She even admits it herself. She liked hurting Jasper, even while she was actively trying to get away.
Scream and cry about it all you want, but just because you think Jasper deserved it, or that Lapis' actions are excusable, they are not. Lapis is someone damaged, and for at least a time, took advantage of that label to inflict pain onto others.

@@rudeTXTmoabut it’s not tho. How did she try to manipulate Peridot or deny her feelings in order to change her view?
Lapis taking the barn was sad, and was something she clearly regretted doing to Peridot. Many trauma survivors will carve out a ‘safe space’ where they can exist happily. This includes carefully choosing friends and support, building a lifestyle which gives a person the most comfort possible (eg filling it with things that bring them comfort, or minimising interaction with things that would make them uncomfortable), even settling in a specific location to avoid unnecessary stress. This gives the traumatised person a personal bubble that isn’t just their own person, but their life. The downside is that sometimes, external factors will infringe on this bubble anyway, OR and internal source of comfort will suddenly become a source of turmoil by acting in a way that is unexpected and suddenly doesn’t bring you comfort. Suddenly, the entire bubble must be rearranged/reevaluated to either compensate for the loss of a significant support or that support must be removed from the bubble to ensure the safety of the traumatised person.
The barn, Peridot, and Pumpkin are all Lapis’ bubble. When Peridot - who, up until this point, has indeed been modifying her behaviour to try not to upset lapis, which is YES, sad and bad that it wasn’t acknowledged before Lapis fled - suddenly became a threat to Lapis’ bubble, Lapis abandoned her, and took what was left of her bubble with her. However, the barn did not have the same effect without Peridot and the surroundings of Earth. Lapis still had her things and her home, but they weren’t what she really needed, which was Peridot’s support. She regrets her decision so much and is so lonely that she spies on the gems on earth, trying and failing to convince herself that it would be okay to come back because she’s so afraid it will all be destroyed anyway.
I find the moment of Lapis’ return where she smashes the barn onto the beach quite interesting. Steven suggested placing the barn on the beach so they could be neighbours and hang out more. Lapis, instead, smashes the barn onto the beach, symbolically destroying her bubble, whilst also reconnecting with her true needs - Peridot, Steven and the Crystal Gems and Earth.
Lapis is not a perfect character, but I find her arc very interesting, particularly how it intersects and diverges from Peridot’s. Peridot is depressed by Lapis’ flight, but is able to recover with the support of her loved ones (sans Lapis).

@@jasperquartz4612 No, she's literally just an objectively traumatized person. Not saying her PTSD excuses her actions, yet it makes her acts understandable. Lapis was a broken gem (in both ways) and due to everything she went through, she was acting paranoid. Again, her PTSD showing. That's why she was a grey character, not black nor white. If anything, you can say Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl were also bad. Pearl trapped Lapis in a mirror and left her there for centuries. They all knew she was in the mirror, yet they kept her they willingly. Now that's a villainous action. You can also say Pink Diamond was villainous at some points too. Basically, just because a character possesses villainous actions, doesn't necessarily mean they're a villain or a bad person.

Lapis is not made to be lovable. she is the representation of a toxic relashionship. she is beautiful and seem appealing (like a lot of narcissic manipulator) but when you look closely she is nocive for all the character she has been in contact with.... and I think that creating someone like that on the side of the good guys was a great idea because it shows that bully and abuser can take many forms and hide among the good people.
you say that the flaw in lapis come from bad writing and are just mistake. but the way I see it... Lapis have been writing like this on purpose. (I am probably gonna use ep that were not released yet when your video came around. but I descovered the show two weeks ago and I don't know what was out or not on march 2017. )
Lapis first ep is great as you said it. and she is shown full of a rage that steven gonna shut down a bit by giving her back her wings. Lapis story told us that she was on vacation on earth: sound quite fancy and we can assume that she was an aristocratic gem. she goes back to HW wanting back her life.
But she has not evolve at all. Lapis was traped. of course in her head HW would be exactly like she left it she has not change mentaly, she rely on memory that have probably been idealized by the time in the mirror...
Then she come back to earth with Peri and Jasper. we understand that she has been interrogate (confirmed later in the show when she get mad at peridot for that very reason) after the rage we see someone with PTSD. afraid of her abuser. that's why she ask steven to let her in the cell. she is ready to loose her freedom again to avoid facing the wrath of HW gems.
we are discovering a new facet of lapis. she is afraid. being trap did not scared her at all. only make her mad. but the way she has been treated on HW has created a new lapis. one ready to lie on the floor and just let things happen.... the ship crash she survived and jasper ask her to fuse....
Like you said : she choose to trap jasper and torture her. and yet the show always present her like a victim... and that's what I find brilliant :we see her throught *steven eyes*. and at that time steven can still be childish. he likes lapis and he choose to believe in her good side. and he thinks that she sacrifices herself...he shows her to us like he see her.
Jasper escape and we meet her again on the boat... and she said "I tought I was a brute but you are a monster" and lapis did not deny. she admit loving torturing jasper knowing it's wrong but missing the feel. she did not send jasp away because she was scared but tempted and was trying to not fall for that sadistic part of her created by her rage and abuse.
About the peridot and lapis episode : the broken recorder was obvious. because lapis has became an abuser. And when she destroy the recorder : it's bullying. she do that for the same reason she lied to jasper about the fusion stuff. she want to make the people around as miserable as she feels. just to try to feel better. that theorie is enforced when navy rubby fall and pretend to fit on earth, Lapis get mad: she can't accept that someone not gonna struggle like she did.
Lapis writing has created a character with victim complex. anger issu that she choose to deal by becoming an abuser and pstd syndrom. she is an awful beeing. but she is still on the side of the "nice guys" not because she is nice but because it is easier for her.
if you see it that way lapis writting is great because it follows what she is supposed to be : a bully.
Even her escape on the moon prove it. she is ready to leave without anything but when peridot choose to stay so she strips peridot from everything by taking the barns.

I often think she became worse after fusing with Jasper. Adding to her already victim complex then being fused with a sadist. To which Jasper admits she was, and Lapis shows that she is a monster and realizes she does have problems with her. Were Gems are more like computers at most, she isn't sure how to approach this knowledge, but does know it's not right.
Despite all this, Steven still tries for her as does Peridot. And Lapis does get some comfort from this side of things.
She's by no means a saint, but wanting every character to be your ideal of a 'good person' isn't how the world works.

That is the equivalent of agreeing to get into a toxic relationship for the *SOLE PURPOSE* to trap and torture the other person.
Look at the clip of Malachite trying to unfuse, and claw away from the water when she was being dragged by chains. THAT WAS JASPER. Does that look like the action of the evil mastermind? Lapis could've just let her go, free away and honestly let the Crystal gems defeat her.

    • @littleblueclovers
      @littleblueclovers 6 лет назад +56

Night Rise Jasper's "job" is to fight and destroy. She's like a military weapon. When she mocks and looks down upon amethyst, or fusions, that's just homeworld mentality. Even Peridot thought like that at some point.
As Malachite she'd want to destroy everyone, because that's what she's supposed to do. Crystal gems are "traitors" and "rebels" in the war, and this is just a continuation of it. In her eyes, they're just a group of traitors who left homeworld, caused a war and shattered pink diamond.
Jasper didn't like fusing, but she also knows that there's no way she's going to be able to do anything on earth alone and stranded like this. So she goes back to Lapis who she fused with before, and the least "pro-crystal gem".

Jasper is obviously a villain, but at least her motivation isn't fueled by self-fulfilling vengeance. Jasper enjoyed the narrow-minded Homeworld ideal of her gemstone, and her actions makes sense when you compare them to what she thinks she needs to do as a Jasper. Jasper loves power, fighting and, is extremely loyal to Pink Diamond. The CG are a threat to the ways of Homeworld, and that's why she perceives them as an enemy.
Lapis is only serving herself. Broken, sure, but Like S.O.O. said I'm tired of her using that as an excuse, to continue being stuck in her emotional turmoil. She's in a position now where she can begin her healing process, where the CG accept her and give her a home. She has Peridot, who is open and willing to help her, and yet she's still refusing to grow.
I understand the depressive, hopeless feelings that cloud the ability to think about a brighter future. I know how difficult it is to take the hand of someone who claims to be there to help, but I cannot accept that Lapis is a good character. I dont know when the Crewniverse is going to give Lapis that push or reason to start being a better person (or at least give her characteristics that balance out her negatives like Peridot) , but I hope it comes along because they could do so much with her.

Honestly, I tried with Lapis. I really did, and I really wanted her to find happiness, but Raising the Barn pushed things way too far.
All throughout the episode, Lapis is annoyed at Peridot for wanting to bring the barn and all her possessions with her. After Peridot says she doesn't want to go, however, Lapis takes the barn when she leaves. After Peridot had specifically stated that she wanted to fight for the life they had built rather than ripping it out of the ground, it seems nothing but vindictive when Lapis rips it all out of the ground anyway.
Not only that, but throughout the entire episode one gets the impression that Peridot is constantly bending over backwards (both figuratively and literally) to keep Lapis happy, and that this isn't just a once-in-a-while sort of thing. Peridot has been suppressing her own wants and needs all this time, just to keep Lapis from getting upset.
I loved this character, but no one deserves to live in an environment where they have to constantly walk on eggshells, or bend over backwards to appease someone. Peridot deserve better, and she needs to spend some time with friends who actually care about her well-being.

You are only showing off how dumb you are too everyone,i am not apart of the steven universe fandom, you are just making assumptions about me. practically the entire fandom would disagree with most of my view points on the show. Also, accusing me of being "ablist" just show how immature you are. If taking responsibility for your actions is considered "ablist" then that just demonstrates that you have the mentality and thought process of a child. If i had a friend who had a mental illness I would do the best that I can to help them,I would not coddle them,i wouldn't treat them like a child or a toddler,i would treat them as an adult. If you are not willing to be an adult and take responsibility for your choices and actions, then no one can help you,I would not help someone if they are unwilling too actually grow as a person. You are the one with the toxic mind set, your way of thinking would help no one.

  • @RedAmalgam2000

I think you're giving Jasper too much credit...regardless of how remorseful she might've seemed or the fact that she dropped to her knees, she and Lapis displayed all the hallmarks of an abusive/toxic relationship. Lapis finally decided to take the hardest step in such a relationship; walking away. Prior to this she knew she didn't live up to Steven's (who she respects the most) standards and she'd never forgive herself until she completely cut ties with her guilty pleasure of taking out all of her anger on Jasper. As for Jasper....All anyone has to do is watch Earthlings again to see if she's truly changed like she claimed....she literally forced herself onto another gem to fuse, clearly demonstrating that she's just as susceptible to fall back into old patterns. For Lapis to have accepted her in Same Old World would've just further created a vicious cycle for the both of them.

    • @jensenpeacock8395
      @jensenpeacock8395 7 лет назад +13

The reason Jasper is still fusion hungry is because she expected Lapis to help her out of it. Instead she just shot her through the boat, and that was it. Jasper seems like an empty person, filled with self loathing due to her being from the same planet that killed her leader, and its very likely she received much harassment from Homeworld gems because of that fact. The rubies may have respected her, but keep in mind rubies are low-class gems that hardly share the same opinions as other higher-ranked ones. Through the StevenBomb Jasper has been beaten by many fusions, which eventually warped her into a mindset that only fusing will she be victorious, and fill that void that she carried.

    • @RedAmalgam2000
      @RedAmalgam2000 7 лет назад +9

Jensen Peacock You're still making excuses for her and expecting too much on Lapis' behalf. Why would Lapis need to help Jasper out of anything? We're talking about the same gem who took part in making Lapis a prisoner *once again* after spending thousands of years trapped in a mirror. Her numbness to whatever psychological issues Jasper has are justified; she doesn't owe her anything.

Saying she was just following orders is an excuse. Jasper and Peridot still did that shit to Lapis. This analysis of Lapis is super lacking and misreading the major themes behind Lapis' characters and commentary on abusive relationships. It's actually quite victim blaming and dangerous

After seeing Holly Blue Agate and her behavior towards her subordinates (Earth gems) and theorizing Lapis was a member of Blue Diamond's court, I think snobbish and dickish behavior is a part of Blue Diamond's court members... Sapphire is an exception since she actually gave up her title as an aristocrat and a Homeworld gem for Ruby's safety. I think Lapis Lazulis, being terraforming gems, are considered very important (probably as or even more important than Sapphires) and are spoiled rotten because of it. The Lapis we know seems to be a by-product of this, and is actually supposed to act this way. I think she isn't even supposed to be the damsel in distress the fans see her as, but rather her own character (an edgemaster). I also think that Lapis acts this way because while she has accepted the fact that she has to stay on Earth, she still has a Homeworld-esque POV. She treats Jasper and Peridot like garbage because both of them are in lower castes than she is. Would an arrogant aristocrat treat an engineer or a soldier equally? Or would she look down at them? The answer is obvious, since Lapis is an arrogant aristocrat, Peridot is an engineer and Jasper is a soldier. And I believe caste plays a huge role in redemption. If you look at the Crystal Gems, except for Sapphire, all of them are lower-caste or middle-caste gems: Rose and Amethyst are Quartz soldiers, Bismuth is an architect, Ruby is a bodyguard/frontman and Pearl is a servant. Since they're in lower castes, they're more down-to-earth and empathetic than the others, seeing the beauty in "simpler" things (in Homeworld's eyes) such as the Earth. Sapphire also has this ability because she can see many possibilities, so she chooses the nicest one. But Lapis isn't insightful, she doesn't care about anyone but herself. Why would she do anyways? They're all beneath her. And usually, narcissistic people don't accept their flaws and mistakes, Lapis seems to be like that too.
So, that's my theory on Lapis and her behavior, what do you guys think?

    • @maybeazebra8629
      @maybeazebra8629 7 лет назад +19

This makes a lot of sense, I never even considered that! Great theory. I think she will change over time though, we've seen her develop a bit. We know she is still pretty depressed but is gradually letting go of that and becoming happier with Peri.

That's an interesting theory, and actually would make a lot of sense. I still like Lapis and her introduction was amazing, but I agree with the video that lots of her development needed to be fleshed out more. With Peridot and the crystal gems she kind of just was ok with them all of a sudden and I guess she could have been called out for some of her actions even if she did express remorse for pretty much everything she did in alone at sea. But the video seemed to just ignore the fact that Jasper was a pretty formidable gem who had nothing on her mind at the time but murdering the crystal gems, she wasn't exactly misunderstood and it's harder to give someone a chance when they're fully capable of killing you and want to.

I have nothing against people who suffer from mental illnesses (having suffered social anxiety for my whole life and growing up with a mother who not only has depression, but also frequent anxiety attacks) and I didn't say I hate Lapis as a character. She's actually one of my favorites and I'm eager for her to grow more as a character. Yes, I feel bad for her at times too: She has to adapt into a new culture and can't do it well because she also wants to hang on to her long-lost past. And I know Jasper had bad-intentions and I know she's a brute, but just because someone has a dark past or suffers from long-term depression doesn't mean they have to complete right to take their frustration out on someone else. And I was just theorizing about how castes may have an effect the flexibility of their respective gems. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
I hope your days will at least be better than "I can't bear this anymore!" state, I know how terrible it can be. And I also hope that I've made myself clear without being rude, harsh or offensive.

Actually, I like Lapis but not the actual canon character. A lot of the time, the fans can take a half baked idea of a character or story arc and run away with it, making the fanon even better than the canon (i.g Tad Strange). That's why I love reading fanfiction and comics and art and animations that do so much more with Lapis and make her the character we all wish she was.

To an extent I agree with you. Though I find you do it to a point you antagonize her quite a bit. She's been trapped for thousands of years with a conscious mind with some knowledge of what happened over years yet couldn't do anything else. She was used like a recorder for most of the time in the mirror and then was left inside Pearl after the war was over being in practically complete isolation. Steven was the person in years she interacted with and have a similar reciprocation of enjoyment and he showed kindness and joy after all those years. Who knows, it may be some of the most she had since she existed. He also other than Garnet actually noticed her and even was the one who freed her even though a Gem like Garnet and Rose Quartz knows her existence. I'm not too surprise of her personality as well you did mention she may have a purpose of terraforming the world and if that's true many human homes, environment, and even civilizations, as well as many lives would be lost. She probably did know about the blueprints the Crystal Gems found on the moon. That is likely why she has little to no remorse to even apologize is because she did what she was made for and only saw the job no one else's perspectives. The Diamonds have little sympathy for anyone except for those they are genuinely close to, most gems worship the diamonds and that may be some of the few or even forms of affection many gems of Homeworld have. Lapiz would likely for now, only really have any remorse, kindness, or sympathy to those she forms a close bond to. She also the type to easily want vengeance since she barely have a code or sympathy or moral due to her job and lack of intimate or close interaction and bonds. When angry people are likely to have their emotions take over rather than thinking over her actions before she does any form of procedure. She also did debated over the time she remeet with Jasper but it seem justifiable at that moment that she eject Jasper because she did declare from just Steven's interventions that she'll SHATTER him. People to an extent are bias and Lapiz later ventre more to be less bias. Lapiz need more interactions with more individuals and more often to build more and into her personality and maybe faster, since each individual have their own perspectives and advice they can share or bring to her mind, as well as gain more features of compassion and sympathy. An example of those who improved more through their interactions with multiple people other than Peridot who was with a larger group more often than Lapiz is Flame Princess from Adventure Time who really grew up once she was released and had the responsibility of caring for her kingdom forming herself. People have their own rated of forming and adapting along with interacting and I'm so slow and terrible at it. Another example of how interaction with people can affect a person and develop as a person is when Rose Quartz who introduce them to try being their own person and going forward towards their desires

I've always seen her as a sociopath, like she literally fits all the descriptions. Also fitting is the way that she is popular in a way, others, such as jasper, peridot, and Steven, try their best to appease her (as sociopaths often are). I mean the definitional symptoms are "antisocial, caring neither for societal rules, norms, and laws, nor for other people" and "unable or unwilling to learn from negative consequences". Sociopaths also often play the victim card. Literally "failure to follow any life plan" is also a part of this, as would explain the inconsistency of her character.
This would be an incredibly effective portrayal of sociopathy, as this is how it is presented naturally in relationships, regardless of if those around them can identify them as being sociopaths. Sociopaths are seldom recognized as such by those around them.
This in no way means she is inhuman, as sociopaths are people and do have relationships, marriages, and meld well into daily life, but it would be an incredible facet of this character

Fawn Park actually the difference between psicophat and sociopath is that psicos are born while socios are the product of a huge trauma related to isolation like for example
Been thousands of years traped in a mirror. Which is a reason why solitary confinement is starting to be seeing as torture in some countries xd so your theory is actually pretty plausible

Fawn Park Likely, she's a non-violent sociopath. They're the most common of all sociopaths, so her actually being so angry and violent would definitely be more easily seen as her finally snapping.

she is nice to steven and peridot after both have proven to be nice and useful to her.
and she is especially nice to them when its about HER.

It was weird how I hated Lapis since day one but now you put it into words; she never owns up to her mistakes and is an overall shitty character. Even before I was a fan of Jasper I hated her. And it's frustrating when you think that it was Lapis being the abuser but 80% of the rest of the fandom thinks it was Jasper. And you get scoffed at for it. no joke, it has happened before.

Ryan Carson sure, Jasper wanted power. she was in a dire situation and was her last resort. But Lapis wanted revenge. Lapis could have easily gotten out Jasper's grasp. But it was her desire for revenge, on anyone, that had her decide to stay.

In light of the recent episode "Raising The Barn", I think Lapis' character makes a lot more sense actually. Her "inconsistent characterization by the crewniverse" is actually just who she is, I think. I think she has PTSD, so half the time she's pretending to be fine and doesn't address her issues, retreating behind a lazy and sarcastic, but also somewhat silly and fun-loving personality. But whne she gets triggered (yes, this is the proper use of that word), she's laser-focused on trying to prevent repeating her past traumatic experiences, and becomes blind to other people's feelings and needs, steamrolling over everyone with her water powers and berating them. It's not the crew handling her badly, it's Lapis handling herself badly.

Peridot was forgived because she actually redeemed herself. most people hated peridot for the longest time. but when she redeemed herself, she was forgiven, because she changed. lapis has yet to change, and sorry but i dont think she ever will. Bombshell Angel Peridot did realize what she was doing was wrong she was indoctrinated into the diamond's ideology. Because of being taught by the gems she learns that life on earth is special and it takes time but we see her develop. With Lapis she changes but it's hard to understand why. Peridot had to have her supreme ruler personally admit to being corrupt and not resourceful. But with Lapis...I don't know? She made a friend? It just seems badly written

Wait, people still see Lapis as a damsel character?
...She's being played as a damsel?! I thought the 'I am broken and my actions are out of line with the messaging of the show' was the whole POINT of Lapis...when she admits that what she did with Jasper was wrong, I was hopping that Jasper and Lapis would be EACHOTHER'S redemption...that through each other they could learn their own flaws and fix themselves. Jasper respect's Lapis's power...being put in that position would naturally make lapis have to inspect herself and confront her issues, rather than the 'ignore and coast' thing she's got going on right now. And Jasper, seeing this physically powerful person that she respects be broken under the weight of responsibility, might see things aren't all about physical power and rank.
I didn't know any one considered Malachite a 'self sacrifice'. It was so clearly said to be an act of aggression...every time Lapis talks about it, she mentions something about how she did it to feel powerful.

Exactly! Not to mention that to a certain point she never wanted to defuse. She is still salty about many things, which she has worked on getting over them, but every time she moves forward she tends to keep a firm grasp of the past until it's affecting her present moments visibly. It's like a reutine she is stuck in. I've seen this personally and it's such a long process too. Many people expect her to be fine within a season and quickly build up from there but it doesn't work like that. It's been taking her an entire season to make one solid step forward and that's not even regarding how big that said step is.

I think you bring up very good points. However, I disagree with your conclusion. You are correct in pointing out the flaws in her character and I agree that she is a very flawed person, possibly the worst character in the show when referring to personality. I also agree that she is not a very well-developed character, but she could certainly be worse. But even if the whole forced fusion thing is a misunderstanding, you can't ignore that Lapis has gone through severe trauma and is probably suffering from multiple disorders. If I remember correctly, Lapis was caught in the middle of a war she wasn't particularly involved in, the rebellion. Being in the middle of a war is traumatic enough on its own, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
She was trapped into a mirror, and used as a tool, for the Homeworld Gems throught she was a Crystal Gem. Eventually, after she showed no sign of being able to help them they *abandoned her for 1,000 years.* And for all that time, she was conscious, and she was alone. And you know what she was probably doing? Thinking about how the Crystal Gems caused this. If they hadn't rebelled, the Homeworld gems wouldn't have captured her. And she hates Homeworld now, too. She hates *everyone.* And spending all of that time alone out there, unable to even move? It probably drove her to the brink of insanity. And then she was saved. She felt a little glimmer of hope when Pearl picked her up after who-knows-how-long. She thought she might actually be free. Maybe, for the first time in forever, she was hopeful. Excited, even. And what did the Crystal Gems do with her? Well, they sure didn't free her. And the hope went away. It hurt Lapis. She never wanted to hope again.
Even if she wasn't trapped by Jasper in the way we are led to believe, Lapis has gone through extraordinary trauma. Yes, many other characters have gone through trauma as well and they came out sane(ish), and the response is to say: Well Lapis is a terrible person, always whining and whimpering about how miserable she is! And, yeah. But maybe she's just expressing her emotions. And we see her as 'bad' because she doesn't know how to express herself. She isn't comfortable with herself. Because really, she's just a grudge-holding person who has suffered at the hands off... well, everyone.
Lol I'm sorry for the paragraph XD Anyways even if I disagree I still love your videos and I hope you keep up the amazing work

'they abandoned her for 1,000 years' It's actually even worse than that. The gem war was over 5,000 years ago. She was frozen, mute and immobile and fully conscious the whole time, for 5,000 years. It's a wonder she's even still lucid after that. I would have gone insane a long time ago.

So many people bring up the bad things Lapis has been through as if those justify her actions. Guess what? Just because you've felt pain doesn't mean it's okay to inflict it on others. Everyone makes mistakes, but you need to apologize when you do, and Lapis doesn't. Every relationship/friendship she's ever had has been based on malicious manipulation; she deceived Jasper so she could trap her at the bottom of the ocean and torture her for months on end, she intimidated Peridot to the point where Peridot was afraid of bringing up certain topics or saying anything that made her angry, and she plays the victim for Steven because she knows his empathy makes it impossible for him to argue when she does. Remember when he wanted to rescue her from the fusion? She said, "Just let me do this for you!" But he didn't want that. He never asked her to. She did it because *she* wanted to.
She's been shown to be violent against innocent people (Connie and Steven), she roots for others to fail (she celebrated when Navy the Ruby betrayed them instead of being redeemed), and will gladly act weak or show overwhelming power depending on who she's talking to and what she wants to get out of them.
The only episode where she was entertaining to me was "Hit the Diamond," and that's because she was calling out/supporting Ruby and Sapphire's flirtation and being hilariously deadpan while doing it. That Lapis hasn't reappeared since.

All very true points! The situation between her and peridot really makes me cringe because I'm very much like peridot, and I just got rid of a lapis friend in my life. It took a while to really understand what they were doing, because like peridot, the people I care about I REALLY care about and its hard to comprehend that they are actually hurting me. but once they were gone it was easy to reflect on how they were really so manipulative, not just with me but with so many people in their life. It makes me sick to think people ship lapis and peridot now :(

I think this himedere attitude is maybe du to the fact that she ils part of the court of blue. I think she is a very important gem(she's the only lapis we have heard of and in the song of yellow, they seem to be important and very powerdul), when you see the way she act and so, she don't feel the need to feel(or say) sorry or something like that. She had say it in the épisode she was introduced: "do you know WHO i used to be?!!"(yes, arrogant... A bit)
Oh, i agree with the vidéo , and it's cool to see that many people actually see it that way, lapis do not act well allé the time and did some terrible thing(especially with péridot and Jasper) and she didn't feel or say sorry. Lapis Lazuli is like Azula, but you actually feel sorry for Azula. Azula was used and abused by her father. Unlike Zuko, she was craving for her father's approval. I used to like Lapis but not anymore. Lapis Lazuli is also like Helga G. Pataki. There's a reason why Helga is the way she is. She has a reason to act out because her mother is an alcoholic while her father is abusive. Her sister is the favorite and she had to go to preschool ALL BY HERSELF. Her mom and dad didn't even give her a ride to school, they were too busy praising Olga. No wonder Helga resents her older sister, but it's NOT Olga's fault. Olga is just as damaged because she's a perfectionist. She has to live up to her father's expectations.

I find it funny how people feel the need to defend Lapis in this comment string. I never once said Lapis was a bad character or/and was the "WORST". Even I agree their development is going to take time considering they have been imprisoned inside a mirror for thousands of years. All I was trying to say was that if someone were to ask you, " Who has the best character DEVELOPMENT in the series?" Lapis shouldn't be your FIRSt answer. Lapis should be the FIRST answer to, " Who needs more work and time done in the series to actually get some character development done?" I'm fond with the concept of Lapis, also I enjoy the character at a certain extent, but their way of thinking isn't always the best, and could be a liability

Lapis is supposed to be problematic. She’s a victim of trauma with twisted morals and a skewed view on life. This is all intentional for her character. That’s why I love her.
As for Jasper and Lapis, to me, they were both toxic towards each other. Lapis was physically abusive and Jasper was emotionally abusive.
Is she a good person? That depends on what your ideology is. Based on her actions, no but at heart I think she is. She has good intentions, as twisted as they can be. Kind of like a high functioning sociopath.

All these dislikes *scream* that they are from people who desire to do nothing but protect and baby Lapis. The thing is, there are times where I do appreciate her character. Mirror/Ocean Gem? An intriguing character that mystified us all and foreshadowed future lore of the gems. Alone at Sea? A great in depth look at someone who sees their reflection and hates herself for what she did, but struggles to fight back from her inner demons. But learns to say no; not because she's facing off her abuser, but because she was the one who caused the pain and suffering, and wants the cycle to end. The story of Malachite and how it effected both of them is much more complex than people realize, and how morally gray the situation is (with Lapis being the one to make the other suffer, while Jasper the warrior is the one who suffers but wants to come back to the relationship) creates this unsettling story that captivated me... except for the fact not much else has been done with it at all.
Other than that, all the tension Lapis had between the Crystal Gems (including Peridot) is nonexistent. Peridot being her interrogator? Nah, suddenly they are BFFs (also a rushed problem in and of itself)! Being trapped in a mirror? Aside from a few jokes, nothing is settled. She hands around the gems like it's no problem (see Hit the Diamond). Except the last times she saw them they were either facing off Jasper or fighting Lapis's water clones. Excuse me? What conflict? They were brushed off for a character who makes jokes about how much she hates Earth, how she almost drowns people, etc. Which is only funny for so long because these things need to be discussed, else something is missing within the story.
Whew, I wrote way more than I anticipated. Knowing quite a bit of Lapis Lazuli fans who baby her to death makes me exhausted just thinking about her potential and how it's slowly disintegrating.

Oh, I understand that. People will dislike just for the hell of it, or they didn't like something else about it. But almost 500 dislikes on a video saying that Lapis Lazuli is not a good character? I've seen Lapis Lazuli stans on, say, Tumblr; they get incredibly defensive. So a huge mount of dislikes can be for the reasons you said, but I still stand by my point.

    • @MissinganAngle
      @MissinganAngle 7 лет назад +2

Very true. It's not like the owner of the video is deprived of likes, haha.

    • @MissinganAngle
      @MissinganAngle 7 лет назад +10

Oh, no, of course I don't understand depression at all. I clearly don't have a close relative who I love who goes through it daily and needs to take medication to not feel like garbage and and shit and has revealed to me that they have had suicidal thoughts before. No, you clearly think I have a great life just because I do not like how this character is written. Great correlation! Hah! Just stop and next time, don't assume things out of people. Just because I have problems with a character doesn't mean I fail to understand what she may be going through.
Also, yes, it's clear Lapis does have problems and likely some sort of mental illness. It's clear in how she prefers to keep to herself and bottles things up until she lashes out (Room for Ruby was a great example of this, and one of my favorite Lapis episodes, honestly. Really shaped up the character a touch, but it doesn't fix everything). She has trouble communicating with others and isn't great at socializing, especially with humans. But first off, that does not excuse her actions, such as with Malachite and nearly drowning children. Mental illness does not excuse the actions of people at all. That's a disgusting way of dismissing people's actions.
Secondly, of course I'm not asking her to always think positively. My problems with Lapis lie in the fact that her conflicts with the Crystal Gems are currently brushed under the carpet. They never talk about her being in the mirror, her fusing as Malachite, or anything else. Lapis clearly feels bad about what she did, but they have yet for her to find closure with herself and the others-proper closure-and instead, she sits around the barn, hiding from her issues until they'll come back to hurt her. I WANT her to talk about her issues, about how she still hates Earth and the Crystal Gems, but the show isn't giving us that yet. In order to become a better person, this character must discuss these issues she has with people. I find that her arc will be all about freedom-freedom from prisons, freedom from how awful she feels about her actions, freedom from her inner demons that still lurk. And that would make her such a beautiful and powerful character, an example that you can overcome the worst parts of yourself and become a better person despite them.
How is THAT offensive, and therefore apparently a right for someone to try and lash out at me? How am I offending people when all I ask is that Lapis *talks* about her problems?

Lapis isn't a good or bad person. She's a flawed person.

In the return and jail break, Peridot was so cold. She had no problem blasting Steven with the ship at all. Now in newer episodes, it's excused as loyalty to the diamonds and acted all happy go lucky "I LOVE MUH DIAMOND.". Jasper doesn't excuse being cold and hating earth due to the fact that the diamonds tell her to. But she had good development atleast.

A bit late but this. It's a shame that the show doesn't really seem to know what to do with Lapis and Peridot after their (for the lack of a better word) acceptance of life on Earth. Lapis was trapped on the planet not because she was associated with Crystal Gems or the war in any personal way, she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. There's so much pent up rage and helplessness that could be explored with Lapis, like a person who's desperate to take back what little control they can because they've been deprived of choice and agency for so long.
I think the show slightly touches upon this when Jasper comes back to ask to fuse again, because in a way Lapis and Jasper had similar motivations for forming a destructive fusion--Jasper wanted power, Lapis wanted control--but after that everything that could be interesting with Lapis is brushed off for comedy or "aww Lapis begrudgingly loves living here" tsundere schtick. (Why was she on Earth? What purpose does a Lapis usually serve in Homeworld? She talks of "never belonging on Earth" but she's never really shown that much longing or sense of allegiance for Homeworld either. There's very little of Lapis that the audience knows about so her overall aloofness towards both Earth and Homeworld comes across as an arbitrary gimmick from author's hand rather than a natural reaction.)

Wow Jasper is really somehow a good gem. I feel bad for her. Her Diamond, shattered . Abused. Forced to another Diamond. All this and possibly more on Jasper's back, she has been through too much. Now she's corrupted, in a bubble, no hope of getting out. She now has no mind, no one to serve for. I think that Steven could possibly help her, since she is half corrupted. She is broken, shatter (mentaly). I hope people will realize what she's been through. I do.

If you had watched the whole thing, Lapis had a choice to fuse with Jasper. Jasper did not force her to do anything, she only gave her a choice. The corruption was because of being abused and almost everything she has even cared about has been taken. She might one day become a good gem, with a proper chance and strong support. She can be forgiven for what she has done. Her purpose was a war, fighting is all she's ever known. If she could be intoduced to a new way of living, she could still keep fighting and live as a crystal gem! I think Jasper is an amazing character, but she just needs a chance to change her ways.

wow this whole video really opened my eyes to things I haven't noticed about Lapis. She is kinda an asshole and while she went through being stuck in a mirror for thousands of years, everyone has issues and don't really have the right to take it out on other people. This video also redeemed Jasper for me cause while Jasper had ulterior motives for forming Malachite, Lapis just basically put Jasper in a dungeon in Malachite mind space if that makes sense, which was a eye for an eye move on Lapis' part but Jasper walked away from waaay more damaged that Lapis was and that's sad. So yeah, I want a redeeming episode for Lapis cause after looking at this video and remembering "Room for Ruby" Lapis knew Navy was on some bull cause if Lapis was in the same situation she would've done the same thing.

I feel like Lapis was great in Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem. In The Message and Jailbreak I still liked her. I still felt the choice to fuse was a poor attempt at self-sacrifice. I was even okay with the way she acted the Chille Tid. But I expected so much from her only to be so let down. She is dry, sarcastic, mean-spirited and the show is either overplaying how badly she was treated or almost joking about it. I thought Lapis had the potential to give us insight into the gems who were caught up in the war without taking a side. She could be the person to show to Steven and the audience that the Crystal Gems aren't always the good guys. But instead, she just jokes around and I've actually come to despise all the episodes with her, Peridot and Pumpkin because they just feel so pointless. For me I don't think Lapis is a bad character in that she's evil, I think she's a poorly written character

    - Not enough backstory!!!

    - She was (note WAS) a total (other name for donkey) to Peridot (and pretty much everyone).

Lapis tried to warn Steven about them, so she clearly didn't want to be forced to be taken prisoner again and fight her only friend. If there's anything consistent in her character, it's that she adores Steven.
I'm not even a big fan of SU, but from what I've seen Lapis isn't bad where people see it. Connie is the only point where she deserves hate for being mean, but that's a huge one.

Although her character hasn't been properly explored or developed, I'm still very fond of Lapis. I've always viewed her as a character suffering from PTSD, so her actions may not always make sense e.g. fusing with Jasper and punishing herself in the process because she believes she deserves it. It makes me think of people who have been through severe traumatic experiences of abuse and on a certain level blame themselves for it. Still, it would be great for her character to have a proper 'breakthrough' and resolution from those past events. I'm still holding out hope for a peridot-lapis fusion!

she really shouldn't have stayed in the barn... after her return as malachite, her imprisonment was written off as a joke, and then kind of... swept away until the boating episode, which really wasn't as hard a nerve. I feel like if you could show domestic abuse more clearly in kids shows, her character could've been developed better... but it wasn't.
the same thing happened to peridot. she started off as a diabolical do for the mission, even killing a marble in her first appearance because it was cracked. then she was basically team rocket when stranded on earth... then after catch and release she basically acted like an ill-tempered kid... then she became a hipster artist.
I feel like, in trying to give these characters more personality, they were taken to their extremes. broken character? make her a pessimistic goth like girl. villainous girl
without weaponry? make her a non threatening girl with an attitude. I can understand how their characters got like this, but it breaks away from the forethought of the orig trig of gens: pearl likes having charge and maintaining order, but is actually doubtful of herself because she's not supposed to do that. amethyst is carefree and laid back, but has inner turmoil about her origins and self worth. Garnet is calm for the most part, but when showing emotions, she's extremely raw when dealing with them. these characters had their personalities and flaws planned, while the others... didn't.
