A Bedroom Screen Door?

- Hello and welcome to The Bearded Woodworker!! In this episode, I make a screen door for my bedroom entryway to separate my cats, who after 3 years of getting along, now can't stand each other. It all started when the younger male cat, S'mores, got a little kitty cold and the older cat, KitKat, didn't like the different scent he was giving off. Long story short, KitKat has been isolated during the day in our bedroom for weeks now. Here is my step to try and get them re-acquainted.
Let me know in the comments if you have had a similar situation, and how did you remedy it?
Thanks for watching!!
I have been looking for this all over the place! I thought I was the only one who wanted a screen door inside.
It sure helped a lot! Unfortunately we ended up rehoming the big guy to my father in law's. Good luck with your situation.
I have had the same problem. Came up with the same solution. In addition I fed both cats at the same time by putting their food on either side of the screen door. The objective was to have them associate the positive feeling of meal time with each other. Took several weeks but now everyone is back to normal and peace once again reigns thru out the land.
My landlord found a kitten and has been keeping her inside her bedroom due to us having 3 small Chihuahua's and we both work all day so having a screen door build around the bedroom door is such a great idea. Thank you
Our cats started to not get along with each other, so I made two cat collars placing scented catnip paracord around them, and it stopped their bad attitude towards each other. To scent the paracord just remove inner strands and as you remove it pull catnip through to outer cord. It worked great and now they are best friends again. 😻😸😹
BTY love your shop layout, got any plans on some of the work.
I have read a little about catnip helping out. I like you idea, and may have to try it out. Thanks for the suggestion. As for plans, I don't have any available yet. I have a website domain on hold waiting for me to get my act together. Perhaps soon in the next few months.🙂
I do a lot of rescue so have had this issue a lot. Generally ypu should start where they can smell but notvsee each other and may have tobstart at a small dustance from the door. Cardboard or anything can gat that done. In addition, try scent swapping and terrain swapping. Switch collars, beds, blankets, whatever has soaked up kitty's scent, put it on the room with the other kitty so they can acclimate each other's scent. Also trade the spaces, onee day KitKat in bedroom, the next skittles. Use play to build confidence in the area. You may even need to coax the less confident into the area with treats, pets etc. Good luck! I have used this method to hive up to 12 cats harmoniously cohabitate. And I have rehomed, but that was the point of rescue.
That’s a darn fine door, Gary! You could make that an outside door once your your cats get over their bad selves.
Thanks, Jason! That's a good idea. Maybe it will fit upstairs on the studio door. We have needed one up there for years....just have to add some screen to it, to keep the bugs out!
Aww, it's not such a crazy idea! We have been thi king of putting a screen door on our bedroom for next summer, so the cooled AC air can come in, but keep the cats out! 😊
Lol! Oh good, I didn't think I'd be the only one doing it. 😊 That would make sense in your situation too.
That exactly why I’m here watching this too
I like this screen!
Nice job
Thanks, Dave!
were having the same problem.
we have 2 cats. that get along. we are watching a friend's 2 cats. we have had them longer than 2 months.
I have done the same thing. I have 2 males picking on my girls. Since i put the screen door up, there's lot less tention between the cats. Im working on an outside area for the cats to keep them from problems.
An outside area sounds nice. We are still making progress here. They can sit in font of each other staring through the screen, but then the male lunges at the screen door wanting to pounce at her.
Looking for results using your screen door. Did it work as a reintroduction?
Give it time and let us know if it worked, Gary.
Bill
Thanks Bill. Just caught them yesterday staring at each other 5 feet apart with no hissing!
I need to make a screen door because my son is allergic to cats and he doesn't want there to be cat dander in the small bedroom when he's trying to sleep so I'm making him a door that way he can leave his door open and get air circulation to cool off the room
That's another great idea for an indoor screen door. Good luck with it, and I hope it works out. Allergies are not fun...
The cat I just adopted tested positive for FIV. He now has to be isolated from the others. Test before you socialize your cats. Humane societies will only test if you ask and pay the extra vet fees for it.
Yep I have 4 cats - one siamese who likes to beat up everybody the other three they don’t play but they don’t beat each other up so the Siamese spends a lot of time by herself so I will be building her a screen door. I have had them all for 13 years hahahahahahaha cats are cats is all I can say 🤪
Ya know I am having the exact same issue, but it's my dogs who aren't getting along after 5 years. It's crazy. Have no clue as to why. I thought this idea would help, since we have had to isolate our fur babies.
I saw that there at 4:11, you trying to get more views, LOL.
Ha ha ha....is it working? 🍑
