Yes, and a cat may actually get colder much faster. So remember to towel them down afterwards. They need to keep their temperature level just like us, and they have got this small body and their fur will quickly evaporate the water, cooling the animal down.

My cat loves playing with streams of water. So when I had to shower him (he had some skin problems so i had a special shampoo from the vet) I used a syringe as as water gun to distract him. I would let him chase water streams in the bathtub before and after showering. He didn't love being showered, but he knew that there was at least some fun involved, so there was no scratching or biting.
My siamese learned that if she remained calm during a bath the bath would go by faster which meant she would get a treat and then petting time faster. It worked wonders!
This is how we trained our kittens, except for the last step - we bath them in a plastic wash basin. It's not deep, they know they can easily get in and out, and we put a towel at the bottom, so it's not slippery. The toys are only used during the bath, and they also get a different treat after the bath. The result is they actually enjoy their bath. It's also important to realize, cats don't usually need to be bathed. But sometimes it's inevitable. For example, my cat once jumped into a pot of meatballs in chilli tomato sauce. >.> When something like that happens, it's usually an unpleasant and stressful experience for your cat. If that's the first time ever you bath it, it will associate the bath with the bad experience. And you don't want that. So train your kittens BEFORE such an experience, so they see bath as something pleasant that helps, not that makes the trauma worse.
Here's the non-recommended one-step method: Just about the same time that this video came out, my 14-year-old purebred silver tabby visited my back yard for her very first visit to the outdoors. She walked directly to the edge of the pool and fell straight in. Less than 60 seconds had elapsed. I had been watching her closely from a distance and dashed over, since I was sure she didn't know how to find the shallow end and exit. She was about three feet out to sea. She saw me and paddled over to me, no fuss, no panic, no noise. I lifted her out, and dripping wet she calmly walked directly back in the house and has since shown no interest in going outside.
I usually have kittens and I introduce them to early bathing so they aren't completely terrified. I usually have some treats or toys or other stuff I do to help reinforce that a bath is good. This looks better than what I do. I had a cat that would purr for the first half of his shower so I guess my training isn't the worst.
I'm sorry to reply to a 9 month old post. This was a video on cat bathing, you said your cat purrs during bathing so it's not so bad. I'd like to mention that cat purring doesn't always mean satisfaction - some cats also purr when they are very nervous or in pain. You need to observe their body language - is the cat is at ease and relaxed or stiff and alert. Some cats - especially some wild cat species and half-breeds - do love water and may genuinely enjoy a warm bath, some of the others can be taught to a point. I'm not accusing - just trying to clarify possibly confusing behavior.
I was actually watching this video with my cat beside me and he raised his paw like he was pawing at the water too! LOL I'm definitely going to try this!
So cool! I'm wondering how these techniques would work on an older cat. My cat is 14 and hates water, but he does sometimes jump into the bathtub for fun.
Our cat is 14, years to. Its perhaps it depend an the ras of the cats but we always had cats that go past 18 when i was still young and living with my parents. Thanks for the great video and tips My cat already dares to play with the water from are sink a bit but I never thought trying to get them in a bad.
I'm wondering if it might work with my 14 year old cat too. She hates baths with a passion. She was already a senior when she moved in with me and didn't have any positive association with being in water. It would be worth a try! Thanks for the wonderful video!
The amount of love and dedication in this video is just incredible. This is how innocent creatures should be treated with gentleness and respect. Thank you for creating a safe and loving place for your fur babies ❤️❤️❤️
This is the most helpful, gentle, and respectful video I’ve ever found. I need to shower my 18 years old cat who stop cleaning himself, so sadly I can’t do all this steps for him but I also watched your other video concerning the bathing process and I intend to do it outside and prepare the same way, hopefully I will do great and will not stress him, it’s my worst fear 🥺 I think I will try the little fish in a pot or something to see their reaction and see if they like to play this way ^^ (I have 5 cats) Thank you so much ❤️
my cat had no 2 stuck on its fur so I had to skip all these steps and go straight to the bathtub. It was a battle, cat was freaking out, but 30 mins later she realized that I was trying to help and now she loves me again.
Ironically, I’ve been doing this with my two boys without even realising it! The only step I didn’t do was the toys in the water. 😹 though it really started with one of them deciding he wanted to drink from the bath tap. XD he now likes to sit in the water itself while drinking and regularly goes paddling!
@@TheCatButler he is! It makes me laugh because I’ll go to bed, and I can hear splashing from the bathroom, and I know exactly what it is he’s doing. 😹
Best advice for cat lovers. I’ve been doing this with my cats the past 10 years (except putting them in a tub of water) and they love it when I give them a bath. Though I still can’t get them used to a hair dryer. I think it’s because I rarely use my hair dryer.
Hair dryers can be very loud and scary for cats who have much more sensitive hearing! They need some kind of protective cover around their ears when being blow-dried, like cutting one end of a sock so it's a little cloth tube you can put over their head with their face sticking out at one end but still covering their ears :)
This is an amazing tutorial! Especially for showing more grown up kitties and not just kittens- I didn't get a chance to teach my cat to get used to water as a kitten, so this was very informative and I'll have to try these steps now!! Thank you!
I was house sitting this kitten and he would just get into the shower with you and I was taking a bath one night and homie just JUMPED IN no problem , no fear , he loves water
@@TheCatButler They can outgrow this eventually, though, when one of our three cats was a little kitten he used to climb right in the shower with me so I didn't think I needed to work with him as far as baths.... especially because he and his two sisters will play with water, and aren't afraid to drink out of the faucet. But he absolutely horrible for baths, he seemed sorta okay but then suddenly flipped out and clawed me really bad. It one of the most painful things I've ever experienced, and of course he's the fluffy one that occasionally gets a poopy butt. He's better in the kitchen sink if I put towels down (I noticed one thing he freaks out about is slipping around) and because he can hold onto the edge instead of trying to grab us, but that means if he gets a stinky butt we better hope there aren't any dirty dishes lol.
Thank you for this. We got a pair of 8 week old kittens last week. At night we keep them in the spare bathroom till they're old enough to be safe without supervision. The toilet lid stays down, and they sleep in the sink that's filled with squashy pillow. They have food, water, and litter access. The thing is, we use the spare tub to fill things like the watering can, and the gravity water bowl jug. Since the kittens live exploring, we want to acclimate them to water. Anyway, it can be very hot here in summer, so we're hoping to be able to offer a tub with a little water for chilling. This video will help us teach the babies that water is fun, and cool too.
This is the best video I've seen.. Although this 8min video won't take a cat 8 mins to to suddenly want to bathe in the real world! It's a process slowly over time that can take weeks maybe months for your cat to gain your trust. I Love this!! absolutely amazing.god bless you and thank you!!!
Oh yeah I definitely did not film all three weeks! Otherwise you guys will be watching for hours haha. But here is a video a year later on how calm there are to water now: ruclips.net/video/MjLglnUgp-I/видео.html
Brilliant yet simple way to let each animal discover at their own pace to be comfortable around water....so important.. especially if you have a pool...love your video...stay gentle & kind ⚘
I realize this video is two years old, but it just popped up in my queue today. You did a phenomenal job, both with training your cats, and with explaining how it was done. Most of the time when I see a video like this, I make a comment that says something like "Nice job, but you don't need to bathe your cat. It can keep itself clean, as long as you brush it regularly to reduce hair balls. You only need to wash them if they're so filthy that they can't get themselves clean, which is exceedingly rare." With your video, I don't even have to say that; your cats genuinely seem to enjoy it. I'm sure you already know this, but for the people who may not know...if you train your cats this way and get them loving the bath, please don't ovetdo it. Washing your cat too often can cause their skin to dry out or become extremely sensitive, because you're washing away the oils in the fur and on the skin. ...and just as a quick side note, if you have the patience and provide a reward that is sufficiently motivational (like treats) you can teach a cat to do any number of things this way. You can also train other intelligent animals with this method. Observational learning combined with positive reinforcement will work wonders. When I was in fifth grade I did a science project in which I taught two little white rats to play basketball. Which was the coolest thing I'd ever done up to that point. ...yet I somehow only got a B on it. 😂
Best video I’ve ever seen, showing gentle training towards cats guiding them using their natural instincts! I love how gentle and patient you a with them
I find that if you are patient and respectful, they actually can be trained! I am not sure if you saw the bell ringing video yet and how I trained them
i got a new kitten and I’ve made it my mission to get him used to water. It’s been a little difficult, but after this video. I have a little more methods other than just giving him shallow baths every once in a while.
I gave my feral 7 yr old tabby a drinkwell 360 and couldnt imagine that she'd love drinking water. She would celebrate it when I'd change the water. Then, I gave her warm baths, and bubbles, putting bubbles on her head like playing with a kid. Then, put bubbles on my head, and her eyes got real big. She sat down in the warm bubble bath, maybe 6 inch deep.. and she then put her head under the water faucet. She loved it, just like your lil ones! The toy fish idea was spot on!
One of my cats enjoy playing in the sink with the water running, she started doing it by her self too. So we encourage it now. Means a lot more cleaning of the sink though.
I did something similar with some cats on the farm I grew up on. I used live creek chubs in a kiddy pool. I would get several cats that would dive completely under the water to catch the fish, and my dad would see them fishing in creeks around the farm.
I absolutely love this video and I absolutely love you, man! It was so thoughtful and considerate of the cat's feelings, very gently and slowly introducing them to the water and letting them know it can be fun too, it touches my heart a little bit being honest, because I feel like even the biggest cat lovers are tend to be very harsh on them (sometimes you need to and I get it, but I feel like it's a bit excessive at times), so it's such a relieve to see someone who actually treats the cats just like another human. A bit of fun story (or I do personally find it kind of fun): My cat, she was always curious with water. She did hated it, but was also very intrigued to it. She loves to sleep in the bathroom on the counter next to the window, because there was always very, very warm and she did that back then when she was young too. No one was bothered by her - and in fact, most of the time you wouldn't even notice that she was there in the first place. If she was sleeping there, no one dared to wake her up. So, if someone was washing their hands or showering, she could just watch on her own if she wanted to, and I guess she did. She quickly understood that she can get a fresh, running water from the bathtub or the sink (other thing is that she cannot really run the water herself unfortunately), so she tend to go there a lot if she wanted to drink. She was constantly leaving marks of her paws all over everything. When someone was bathing, she tend to jump on the door's handle to open, just to check out if no one is drowning (or simply because she wanted to sleep or drink water). One time, it was just happening, when I was taking the shower. She wanted to get in so I let her. I ran a water from the sink, so she could drink, and I expected her to leave right away, but instead, she sat on the corner of the bathtub, which was in a paddle of water, and just stayed there. I tried my best to shower next to her to not make her wet too much, but it wasn't really possible. To my surprise, she didn't ran away, in fact, she stayed with me the whole time. Her back was all wet, but she seemed to be quite comfortable, not bothered by any mean. It seems like she just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't kill myself there by an accident, because right after I left the bathroom, she did too. I remember one time when she was sitting in the bathtub drinking running water, I locked the outflow just to check how she's going to react. She didn't have any problem with kneeling in it at all, but when she was done drinking, I didn't wanted to force her into staying there, but I think that the first 2 steps she passed already :D!
Awwww thank you! I am happy that you think the same =). Yeah I try to empathize with my cat. I myself when I was younger was thrown into the pool to learn how to swim by the instructor. It was such a negative experience that it took a while to get over it. So I am thinking the cat probably is experiencing the same emotions. WOW THANK YOU for sharing such a beautiful story. Your cat being concerned for you and making sure you didn't drown. Yeah its fascinating how being gentle and letting the cat learn on its own could accomplish so much =D.
i wish there were more cat owners like you in the world, omg, you're bomb, showing ALL of our animals they can trust and respect us, is real love to an animal ❤
This video was so good! I'm adopting my kitten soon and bathing was the one thing that made me anxious. I felt really uneducated about it and considered a monthly expense at the groomers but now I'm stoked to try this as an upcoming fur parent!
Very impressive. I am sure that must have taken many slow steps and lots of patience. I have cared for many cats in my life, often rescuing strays who need bathed to get rid of all the fleas and dirt in their fur, and baths are rarely an easy task. I'm sure it helps if you start with younger cats or kittens too when they are still very playful and willing to try new things. Your cats are beautiful. Gorgeous long white hair. Happy training!
Thank you the kind words and sharing your beautiful story! I am always heartened by the people who rescue strays. Its tough work! A lot of respect. It did indeed take awhile for them to get use to it!
Omg !! Thank you so much for some very helpful information 🙏🙏🙏 We have a cat with a spinal injury that needs to be cleaned a few times a day. I’ve been desperately searching for a stress free way to clean her 🙏🤗 Thank you so much !!!!!
My cat used to stick around when I take showers and might even join me in the bathroom. He was never afraid of the hair dryer since he was two months old. However there was one time when my mother decided to force pressing it into a washbasin of water 😢 He used to be a lovely lap kitten for months who sleeps on my chest every day. But It never approach any human again after that incident and finally left the house permanently.
I am so close to adopt myself a cat and even though I don't know if she likes water or not, this video is really helpful for me to teach her how to like water, thank you!
I absolutely love your two kitties and the fact that they’re getting baths and they’re socialized and all of the things that you do with them I’ve seen some other RUclips videos and people do you instruct you about the proper ways to do things but their for babies aren’t always happiest participants they are sometimes just kind of they’re doing it in the mirror the other two just show product and not really too many pet activities together I like the fact that all of your videos of with your kitties and how happy they are and that they just radiate comfortability with the situation that they put in for the video aspect
What REALLY helped is to use a hand shower head BUT take off the shower head and just have the warm water on low pressure come out of the hose quietly. I think 90% of the stress is the noise running water makes. Keeping it quiet helps A LOT. Then is just put them in the tub and start by getting their feet wet with the warm water and then as they get used to it get more of their front legs wet. The warm water helps keep them from getting overstimulated.
Thank you for sharing and expressing the importance of letting your cat learn at their own pace 💖😸! It was so nice to see your cats enjoying themselves and associating positive feelings with water.
This is amazing! I hate some of the other cat bath/falling into water video compilations on RUclips, people just standing there laughing at the poor terrified cat, it borders on abuse in my opinion. This slow, calm approach is great!
I am a new cat owner and I did not really expect that I will have a cat. I am really confused how I will give them a bath but this video really helped me! Thank you so much. I hope that by next week, I can give my cat a bath already :)
Cats actually don't necessarily need a bath. They clean themselves. However it is useful to have them used to water in case when they get older. Sometimes when they get older they stop cleaning themselves
Yes my cat will get in the tub after i get out.. He plays in the tub. He isn't afraid of getting wet.. I caught him drinking out the toilet like a dog. I was like what the hell. If he can put his paws and face in the toilet bow. He is not afraid of water.. But i have yet to put him in a tub of water.. He is a scratcher if you try to make him do something he don't want to do. Now he will walk on the edge of the tub get in step in puddles of water but i never put him in water. Guess i need some water toys.. I know he loves balls & he loves new toys. So thank you for this video. I needed it.
I'll do everything you listed! I live in a country with very warm summers and have no ac so it's the perfect time to teach her how cooling water can be
That was absolutely amazing. I worked at a pet grooming place once and the guy had this cage that looked like the shape of a half cookie or circle and was just narrow enough to shove a cat in and then spay it with water and bath it. It was so horrible for the cats. They hated it.
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I wanted to try and show it’s possible to get cats to like water if done in a gentle and thoughtful way. I was surprised myself haha. It just takes patience :)
I’m so intrigued by your system here. The only trouble for me is that we have a large fish tank. :) I’ve consciously avoided fish type toys to minimize conflict. The top is almost fully covered by two custom cut prices of glass, but there is a gap in the centre for a fishing paw. :) I will try to adapt this though. :)

@The Cat Butler I have been brushing Ollie's teeth 2 times a day, but not more than half a minute or so. He is getting used to it but still pulls back a little. I do not want him to be too uncomfortable for too long. Should I brush 1 time a day and brush longer or 2 times a day and less time? My concern is that Ollie will become cautious of me every time I approach him. When I brush my teeth, I let him watch me, and then I brush his teeth. I brush his teeth appropriately 1.5 hours after he eats at 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. I really appreciate your help so very much. You have become a roll model to me so I can be the best cat dad I can be. I was actually watching this video with my cat beside me and he raised his paw like he was pawing at the water too! LOL I'm definitely going to try this!
Haha looks like your cat is learning from watching other cats on RUclips :). Thanks for the kind words!
@@TheCatButler You are so good at cat psychology. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping me understand my cat's behavior.
@@est9949 Thank you! I am glad it helped
Hey there ! Is there any update about your cat's relation with water ? Did you see improvement ?
So cool! I'm wondering how these techniques would work on an older cat. My cat is 14 and hates water, but he does sometimes jump into the bathtub for fun.
You raised him well! reaching 14 years old is quite the accomplishment for a cat. Let me know how it goes!
Did it work?
Our cat is 14, years to. Its perhaps it depend an the ras of the cats but we always had cats that go past 18 when i was still young and living with my parents. Thanks for the great video and tips My cat already dares to play with the water from are sink a bit but I never thought trying to get them in a bad.
I'm wondering if it might work with my 14 year old cat too. She hates baths with a passion. She was already a senior when she moved in with me and didn't have any positive association with being in water. It would be worth a try! Thanks for the wonderful video!
@@TheCatButler my cat is 13 to 14 years old and idk what happened but he doesn't mind water and has never hated it
The amount of love and dedication in this video is just incredible. This is how innocent creatures should be treated with gentleness and respect. Thank you for creating a safe and loving place for your fur babies ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the kind words!
yes, thank you. how did you first get them in the smaller bowl, first?

This is the most helpful, gentle, and respectful video I’ve ever found.
I need to shower my 18 years old cat who stop cleaning himself, so sadly I can’t do all this steps for him but I also watched your other video concerning the bathing process and I intend to do it outside and prepare the same way, hopefully I will do great and will not stress him, it’s my worst fear 🥺
I think I will try the little fish in a pot or something to see their reaction and see if they like to play this way ^^ (I have 5 cats)
Thank you so much ❤️
Really thank you for your kind words!!! 5 cats wow! You get so much love from your cats :)

What an underrated video! This is so well done and informative. It is wonderful to see how much you love your cats too
Such kind words! Thank you so much!
@@TheCatButler you deserve it! Keep up the great work!
I could watch them play with the fish bowl all day! Such sweet kitties and a great informative video. So glad I found your channel! Thanks so much!
Thank you for the support! I am so happy that the video helped you out :).
my cat had no 2 stuck on its fur so I had to skip all these steps and go straight to the bathtub. It was a battle, cat was freaking out, but 30 mins later she realized that I was trying to help and now she loves me again.
Glad it worked out!
Ironically, I’ve been doing this with my two boys without even realising it! The only step I didn’t do was the toys in the water. 😹 though it really started with one of them deciding he wanted to drink from the bath tap. XD he now likes to sit in the water itself while drinking and regularly goes paddling!
Hahah your cat is so cute! Thanks for showing such a cool story hehe :)
@@TheCatButler he is! It makes me laugh because I’ll go to bed, and I can hear splashing from the bathroom, and I know exactly what it is he’s doing. 😹
This is absolutely amazing! What a great video - thanks so much for sharing. I had no idea that it could be that easy!
I’m happy you find it helpful! Just a little persistence and patience without forcing the cat :)
Best advice for cat lovers. I’ve been doing this with my cats the past 10 years (except putting them in a tub of water) and they love it when I give them a bath. Though I still can’t get them used to a hair dryer. I think it’s because I rarely use my hair dryer.
Thanks for the kind words!
Thank you!
I am glad you found this helpful :)
I was house sitting this kitten and he would just get into the shower with you and I was taking a bath one night and homie just JUMPED IN no problem , no fear , he loves water
He’s a natural!
Melissa I am glad the video is helpful and congrats on your new kittens! They will bring so much love in the house :)
Yes u r right . Cats need a very gentle approach when it comes to bathing.
Yes!
Claire thanks for the kind comment!
Fitting how the best cat owner is known as the *Cat Butler*
He knows who's *truly* in charge, and that's why he's the best.
You only need to wash them if they're so filthy that they can't get themselves clean, which is exceedingly rare."
With your video, I don't even have to say that; your cats genuinely seem to enjoy it.
I have to agree with Joy's comment, this is a great video. I really appreciate that your cats aren't traumatized in doing this.
Thanks for the kind words :)
How hard it is to stop loving this adorable creature 😻😻😻
POV: You saw a cute cat in the thumbnail and clicked even though you don't have a cat.
Maybe it’s a sign to get one :)
I never thought I'd see cats playing in water and having fun. Good show my man!

Glad the video was helpful!

Hahah thanks for the kind words!
Awww I loved reading your comment! Your tabby cat sounds so cute haha
This is a game of patience but I’m more than willing to wait.❤️
Yes it is! You are the best :)
That is so cool! Thanks for sharing! Would love to see your cats diving to catch fish!

Awww thanks!

Yeah :)

I am glad the video helped and saved you money in the future :)
Cats should rarely ever be bathed unless absolutely necessary on a Vet's advice.
This was excellent and well filmed! Absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to try this with my Marlen. THANK YOU! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
A lot of respect.

u have turkish van, or some hybrid of that one. They love water. Most normal cats, no matter what you do, will NEVER willingly get into water.
They are Ragdoll cats.
Oh no he rain away?

I absolutely love your two kitties and the fact that they’re getting baths and they’re socialized and all of the things that you do with them I’ve seen some other RUclips videos and people do you instruct you about the proper ways to do things but their for babies aren’t always happiest participants they are sometimes just kind of they’re doing it in the mirror the other two just show product and not really too many pet activities together I like the fact that all of your videos of with your kitties and how happy they are and that they just radiate comfortability with the situation that they put in for the video aspect
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I try to lead my cats with kindness and compassion. It’s how I train them and earn their trust.
The warm water helps keep them from getting overstimulated.
well said!
Thank you for sharing and expressing the importance of letting your cat learn at their own pace 💖😸! It was so nice to see your cats enjoying themselves and associating positive feelings with water.

Yes definitely need a little patience. But now they sometimes try to jump in the shower if I’m not looking

Hey buddy,
I hope you and your kitties are well.
We got Ollie fish for the tub. Today, I put the fish in a big bowl of warm water and added a few treats. He was intrigued. It is way too cold to bathe him, but in the meantime, I'll get him used to the water.
Thank you so much for everything.
Glad to hear from you! Happy to hear Ollie is warming up to the water. Thank you for your support!

@@kg-Whatthehelliseventhat wow that is awesome! it does take a lot of dedication. I think you could brush 1 time a day and brush longer in the meantime. Till Ollie indicates he is more comfortable.
