What if i wanna play a song, but i use differend tuning to play?
Most helpful video I found and I'm motivated, can you please help with the range issues we can face when arranging a piano or violin music?
"Finish is better than perfect, because perfect is never finish" Best quote, thanks!
"Done is better than perfect because perfect is never done." Wise words from Nathan Mills. I love fingerstyle guitar but I've always just used fingerstyle as a backdrop for my singing and songwriting. However, I think it's time for me to try my hand at a simple arrangement. Thanks, Nathan!
"done is better than perfect because perfect is never done." best advice ive heard all day
I like how you emphasised not looking up chords or going straight to chords which is what a lot of other tutorials focus on. Thanks
6:39 in addition of me using ear buds i go to settings and to the equaliser and make the bass frequency higher in db and higher notes lower in db
I made my first arrangement yesterday. I played the first minute of "Old Friends" from the hobbit soundtrack. I harmonized all the single notes that I didn't play with a chord. I really want to apply arpeggios in this songs as well. I watched your video on that today. I really love doing this. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
You nailed it. I have definitely followed the exact same pattern of seeing amazing guitar arrangements, trying them out but after a long time of struggling with complex cords and finger patterns, I found I just didn't have the skill yet and didn't know where to go from here. I am very tempted to take your class now, and I will definitely try taking only the top and bottom notes of a simple song to practice first. I think that will help a lot! Thank you so much!
This is splendid. You're a man after my own heart with your playing and with what you focus on. Thank you, bro!
You make this process so much easier and funner. Thank you!
Using the playback speed feature is a life-changing tip! I didn't manage to figure out the bass note until I slowed it down.
Thanks for the video!
I’ve followed this recommendations and my acoustic arrangement started to sound good. Thanks!
What a concise, encouraging and useful video. Thanks a lot Nathan!
I appreciate the encouragement, which compelled me to tackle "Come By The Hills" for solo guitar. I did a nice, simple arrangement with the chords and melody, but wanted a second time through with arpeggios, so there I cheated a little. I didn't have confidence in my ability to do a respectable job of creating the melody with arpeggios, so I "borrowed" someone else's arrangement done that way, transposed it down a step from E to D, and that became my second stanza. Now I'm working on playing that arrangement with Ashokan Farewell as a medley:-)
This was very helpful, thank u so much!
That was such a good tutorial everytime I was wishing for an example you gave one. Thank you so much
Just what I was looking for, thank you!
Very nice. Thanks!
"Done is better than perfect because perfect is never done" thanks for this video and this magnificient quote (from France)
You sir , have a very honest vibe
Very good and very useful. Thanks! Keep up the good work! ;)
Very nice thoughts about this subject. You explain in such a simple and direct way. Well done, dude! Keep up the good work.
This is awesome, ¡Thanks!
dude thanks so much!!! loved the video and loved the way you teach !! again tysm loved the video
The only thing that stops me is literally how and where to start. But that's why you're here.😁
Same bro. HOOOOOOW!!!! AAAAAHH!
So happy to find you here! Yes!
thank you so much sir
Thank you so much, I got so much helpful
Start simple! I like it 👍
Excellent advice! And thanks to your encouragement I have started my arrangement! :)
Very good advice! Start and finish and just keep going.
Very useful advices 😊
Thank you so much 🙏🙏
You are doing a very wonderful thing ❤️❤️
Uche from Nigeria
Excellent video my friend you're a credit to the classical guitarist community
Great lesson
Dude love the lesson's great job, i need more musical theory 😅😅😎👏
Thank you so much
I have many arrangements... Im here to learn from the master!
Good wisdom here...well done video 🔥
I over complicate right out of the gate and then procrastinate because of info overload. Love the video!
I haven't even gotten my own guitar yet, but if I'm this interested maybe I just need to get it and start learning for myself why this is so fascinating.
I think for me it's I always want to bite off more than I can chew, and your advise to start very simply is great.
For the 1st and 2nd barriers, I was lucky one of my friends was a really chill classical guitar player. As he helped me get started, he was able to make simple things sound just as good as complicated things, and he seems to have a skill for guiding the next step without making it overwhelming. For Guitar, but also for Math and CS tutoring.
However, I think there's another barrier that I seem to be hitting now... every arrangement I've done so far has been in either G or C, or their relative minors Em and Am. Whenever a piece wants to go outside of one of those keys even temporarily, I'm lost. In addition, I have trouble playing melodies up the fretboard higher than 6 frets.
This might be related to the way I "hear" the melody. I don't really hear the melody notes as notes by themselves, but only within harmonies. If I can't hear it relative to a chord I can find easily, then I have trouble finding it on the fretboard, and have trouble remembering where it is on the fretboard once I do find it. There needs to be a way to place it relative to something else to make it easy to find, and for my first arrangements so far that has only been relative the standard chords in the keys of G and C. I need to find an alternative set of anchor points, maybe, to hang everything else off of
This video has really helped me alot I've liked and subbed. The struggle I've been having is knowing the timings of the bass notes and how to count them with the melody line
You are just awesome, man. Thanks for your job! Your video was just complete! A huge hug from Brazil!! You got a new active subscriber on me! Thanks! :)
THANKS NATHAN
What's one thing that's preventing you from starting or finishing your first arrangement?? Let me know in a comment!
Bunch of reasons for me:
1. Lack of full fretboard familiarity
2. Perhaps sub-par sense of rhythm
3. Insufficient practise and not enough patience
Very useful video.
Motivation at the half of the process
Lack of full fretboard familiarity is probably one of mine. However that seems related to another barrier that I have. I can arrange in the keys of G and C, and their relative minors Em and Am, staying within the first 6 or so frets, but if a piece goes temporarily outside of one of those keys, or requires a note higher on the fretboard than fret 6, I often get lost.
I need to find an alternative set of anchor points, maybe, to hang everything else off of
No ear training.
damn good information.cheers.
Sensational!!!
Thank you
Getting started. Understanding the notes that go in between the melody/bass...
Thank you so much, with your help I've created my own arrangement of Schindler's List on the guitar. Never thought I'd do it :)
This! This is why I do it. Congratulations. I'd love to hear it!
Hell of a movie...hard to watch at times but always gets me when they give him the ring 😓
Underrated
Thank you too much, you inspired me to upload my first guitar video , and fight against my fobias, thank you very much, hope some day Will meet you. Sorry for my bad english
Love it
man you make it look easy still thx that really helpt
I’m really busy with running my guitar lessons business that arranging my own pieces take a back burner. Currently, I am doing “Across the Stars” John Williams. I’m using a beginner piano score to guide me.
translating beats and rhythms comfortabaly
Stuff you said about info overload? It hit deep. I've been trying to arrange a song and I'd get discouraged watching other guitarists do supernatural things
thank you :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, after years of fooling around with the guitar at home now I really know where I wanna get with it.
This helped me so much to get started! Thank you a lot!
heyy i cant believe i actually manage to do it xDDD. LOVE UR VIDS
Information overload :D
well i know about that for sure ^^
one of the first things i wanted to learn were Harmonics .. buuuuut after 3 Years im finally able to get some sweet ones out
Just keep playing ;)
For me since I'm a classical guitar student and theory student I never have enough time to sit down and learn this skill. I heavily enjoy learning my pieces but I also want to apply my skills to another area of music creation.
nice video.
YESS
I learned the things you mentioned in this video the hard way :P (trial an error). Really helpfull for clearing things up. I still struggle with timing though. For example i write something in guitar pro that is exactly what i want and in sync with the song i want to cover but i cant seem to get the timing correctly when i play it alone. Could you make a video on that and how to practice timing in general?
I'm Indonesia
Thank you verry much
My First project is the Glory Days from The Incredibles. Already like how it's sounding. :D
You are like the Thomas Frank of guitar xD so cool though, no joke, your work is amazing!!
Best comment ever
I’ve only played guitar for 3 months so yeah I’m not ready at all
You just convinced me to start my first arrangement I just don't know where to note them since I don't have a very good memory.
So glad to hear that! I recommend Guitar Pro for notation. Or you can use free software like MuseScore.
@@BeyondTheGuitarAcademy thank you so much for taking the time to answer. I just took guitar pro and works like a charm! Thanks again for the inspiration, love your work.
I finished my arrangement! Oh yeah even made a video of it! Took so much time. I can't believe i did this. 🙃 #proud
I didn't know Karl Urban played guitar!
Timing couldn't get any better
Hey! Could you suggest some good tracks to start with? I keep picking songs I like but I always get bogged down. I think I need something simpler to begin with
One of the things that stops me is analysis paralysis, I have the need to overanalyze everything instead of learning via experience, also patience, sometimes I fail to stick with it long enough to make something worthwhile
I made my first arrangements but could you make a tutorial of Lion King main theme this land in guitar
I can usually get the melody in 1 or 2 spots on the neck but when I try to add bass notes I can never find the right ones. And I don't really know what chords go with what to find out the bass notes.
My problem is I get something worked out in my head then paper. I might record a guitar track but then I stop or get another idea for a song. I finally had to just stop coming up with new ideas to finish up the 5 songs I scribbled down on paper. I lack in the mixing and mastering of a project.
Do you have any lessons to help add those chords?
Harmony was what I wanted to hear about. That’s were I get frustrated the most. 😊
Did you watch this week's video yet?
Beyond The Guitar Academy yes I did, what do you think about harmonizing with open triads?
My problem is that i dont have very good ear so it is very difficult for me to know where to start playing. Im from Argentina so i apologyce for mi bad english. Big fan of yours💪
My problem is sometimes i find some notes in the position where i cant make their chord. Also i cant play consistent bass line as i want to because i have to play the melody. But don't worry, i'm still practicing :D
I love you
how to find melody forr any song? plz help
It's tough for me because even though I have very good technical skills, I don't know a lot of chords and I don't have very good intuition of the fretboard. I'm also pretty ambitious with the songs I want to arrange.
It's ok to be ambitious with the songs you want to arrange - but at the right time. Give yourself permission to start with some simple tunes. Just like when we first start playing guitar, we might be ambitious with the songs we want to play - but we know we can't jump straight into the super technical stuff immediately, we have to work up to it. As far as not knowing a lot of chords, that's where my Fretboard Freedom training comes in (it's free, link in description). It teaches you how to build chords rather than having to memorize a bunch of chords
I use ChordBank which has so many different chords
I want to learn how to make my own arrangement, not arrange a song that already exists but to make my own song
My biggest problem is that I hold my self to a high stranded. For example my first gutair song was green day good riddance. Even tho it took me a while to learn I still play it to this day.
I spend probably 2 hours a day at least, playing my guitar but i have zero understanding of what im doing. I just look at tabs online and try to play them haha. hoping that this channel can help me get a better grip of musical theory.
İf you are going for the classical mu advice is learn notation and play them also if you feel you are stuck you can try with a teacher
İ tried self learning for about a year trying yousician tabs and trying to copy the video then i started lessons with a teacher and my luck she is amazing now i am better than 5 year playing guys i improved so fast because i tried it muself first and explored to how May i do that
I am looking 4 course
Incorporating tuning other than standard is one of my road blocks personally
Is that a Stormtrooper from the first Order on the Wall?
The only thing that stops me is that my fingerpicking pattern. Whenever i build my melody and everything, my right hand doesnt cooperate. I cant find any pattern that suits well ib my chosen song.
Is it time for next 50tips in 10mins?
first one was Great !!
Hey Nathan,
It's been a few months I'm making my own arrangements, I'm wondering how many time do you need to complete an arrangement ?
It's probably a lack of experience from me, it also depends on the complexity of the song I try to arrange, but I take a loooot of time for arranging, mostly because I take too much time on identifying chords.
It definitely takes some time, but the more arrangements you make, the quicker you will get. Improving your ear, fretboard knowledge, and theory will help too. I can usually knock out an arrangement in one day, but I've been doing this for years. Keep it up!
@@BeyondTheGuitarAcademy That's what I told myself, but I thought it would be quicker haha
Thanks a lot !
The fingestyle its very difficult to make, i have been 12 years playing guitar, knowing a lot of cool things (in my opinion), but its very dificult to write it all in a pentagram... For example rithms with the cords (and using a open tunning), how can i whrite percussion all in the same plase...
I feel like the second bass note was a G. But i dont know for sure though since the master thought it was an E
i want to learn how to arrange tabs because there's some beautiful gover that i want to learn but no tabs
you mean bass note as key note?
for me it's the note I can humm during the melodie(section) .
😉
