      My Oscar "Mr. Nibbles" has quickly become on of my favorites in the fish room. Great personality and very interactive. He is messy which I perpetuate by adding floating stem plants. He spends most of the day tucked into the plants waiting on food "or my hand" to hit the water.

    My mom had an Oscar that refused to die! Despite several instances of hole-in-the-head, and house-sitters who over fed, under fed, and lapsed with water changes when she traveled, she always came home to find him still swimming around! He finally died at 18 or 19 years of age. He was huge, probably about 14" long, and hilariously picky about the decorations in his tank. There was one little flower pot he absolutely HATED, and would always bury with gravel every time my mom dug it out and repositioned it. His best bud was a large common pleco... he'd let the pleco come and "groom" his sides and float aimlessly adrift while he enjoyed his massage. My mom lasted less than a year before getting a new one because they are such entertaining roommates! The new one is doing very well and has a beautiful smooth face; no hole-in-the-head! He also does the thing with his pleco pal, now, though it took him a while to decide they could be friends.

    So glad you made this video! I keep nodding my head in agreement with everything. So many don’t realize that that cute little Oscar chasing your fingers on the glass at the pet store will get big and fast! I have my 2 knuckleheads in a 125G filtered with TWO FX6’s. I still do water changes regularly because, like you said, they are messy. I love my babies. Man, you hit the nail on the head with everything in this video right down to them changing colors with their moods.

    In my first fishkeeping years I had two little tiny Oscars in a ten gal tank. No internet then mind you. Then I had two in a 20 , two in a 40, then went right to 75. I loved them. They would sulk and drape themselves over rocks and play dead if their food was late. They would rub on my arms when I was sticking the plastic plants back in. I took a serial murdering electric blue African cichlid about an inch long and threw him into their tank. He'd killed everything in a 55 tank over a weekend when we were gone. It was either that or burial by sea. The huge Oscars never ate him! They grew, he grew but they never ate him. He was, however, exceedingly polite.

    Mine change colors like a mood ring. They also will play with a ping pong ball. For substrate I use giant marbles (too big to swallow) and they like to move them around the tank.

    I had 2 red Oscars for many years and they were like a couple of little dogs to me because they were so intelligent and friendly. I could handle them and they enjoyed it. They used to love bulldozing all the gravel in the tank from one end to the other. Sometimes when they were naughty they would smash the tank lights .
    I ended up with 16 tanks with many different species just like yourself. I love your red discuss also and appreciate all your work and vids mate.
    Take care.😆

    My Oscar just turned 7 years old two weeks ago( since I’ve gotten him) he has a lot of personality. He hates when the heater light comes on indicating it’s on (it usually turns on at night) he also loves his log and anytime I sleep with the lights on he always watches me sleep. I have him in a 75 gallon. The people I got him from didn’t treat him well, you could tell by all the scratches and he does have hole in the head. I took him to the vet at the beginning of this year and they said this would probably be his last year but he’s still healthy and being a brat haha. I recommend getting an Oscar if you’re a busy person because they don’t require much maintenance given you have the right equipment. They’re always happy to see you when you get home and they’re so fun to watch.

    • @ballsdeep994u
      @ballsdeep994u 5 лет назад +1

      Your lack of maintenance, as you put it, is probably why he has hole in the head.

    • @Tidepodss
      @Tidepodss 5 лет назад +1

      Balls Deep he had hole in the head when I got him and it was really bad, it’s a lot better now. When I first got him he would just lay on the bottom of the tank. After few weeks of medication and a bunch of water changes he started eating again and swimming around. I have a pretty good canister filter so the water is crystal clear and I do constant PH checks just to make sure.

    • @ballsdeep994u
      @ballsdeep994u 5 лет назад

      @@Tidepodss some advice..... keep your canister filters pretty clean. Canisters are known nitrate traps and high nitrates can cause hole in the head amongst other things. Also, pH doesn't really matter. Fish adapt to pH.

    • @Tidepodss
      @Tidepodss 5 лет назад +2

    I found that Oscars like most animals are more docile after they've been fed,and some will grab the tip of your finger and it doesn't really hurt....depending on the size of the Oscar though.
    And some will also come and lay in the palm of your hand...depending on what mood they are in I've never known a fish to do that!
    Which is another reason I love them they can be aggressive yes,but they also had their softer side to
    And the babies were always so cute!
    But grew fast!

    I just love that they'll eat anything. Guppies from my overstocked tank, "sure thing". Chopped baby carrots, "Why not". Pellets, "yummy". The other cichlids in the tank that doesn't fit in your mouth, "I wanna try at least!"

    • @Rotsuoy
      @Rotsuoy 5 лет назад

      That's so funny. My oscar is actually pretty picky. I've tried silver sides, tilapia, catfish, and shrimp, even peas and carrots, but he won't eat them. He prefers frozen bloodworms, cichlid pellets, dried krill, and some hikari gold carnivore pellets. Sometimes, just sometimes, I can get him to eat raw or partially cooked shrimp, but everything else he seems to spit out. I've never met a picky oscar before him. Ironically I finally got a food that my bichir loves but my oscar won't touch, so that's a plus for the bichir!

      @@Rotsuoy I think you got a rare oscar there. Or maybe spoiled rotten lol. Then again, mine might have been odd for trying to eat literally everything that could fit in his mouth

    I've got two oscars in a 125 that are about 5-6 months old right now. They are the cutest little dudes, only 6 inches or so right now, but I love to watch them and they seem to enjoy watching me and following me about the room. They are such diva fish though - I tried giving them a homeade mix of whiting/raw shrimps (fat/protein), peas (fiber) and garlic (Vit C) bits in a gelatin suspension and you would not BELIEVE the dirty fish scowls I got! They pouted on the bottom of the tank until they got used to it. I've been working with them early to help them be hand-friendly for when I have to clean or work in the tank - they will often swim between my fingers or rub on my hands. They will even watch as I move their decorations to siphon and clean the tank, often coming right up to where I'm working.
