      @@PrimeTimeAquatics hello, I have 2 Oscar’s that are 3 inches. When I first introduced them to each other they locked lips and circled each other for a few minutes, But after that they follow each other everywhere and kinda rub on each other in a peaceful way as they swim around. Do you think I have a male & female or is this common for 2 males to show this behavior?

    I don't disagree with the tank size and I've seen Oscars in a 40 gal. I'm that guy who has been successful keeping my Oscars healthy and using 75 gallon for decades. I keep 1 pleco and a large peacock eel with them. I have never checked or owned a ph reader. I run high oxygen sources and constantly filtered and moving water. I'm on my second generation of Oscars. They are a very happy fish community. The eel interacts with the Oscars regularly and points them towards the food. They are a good team

    I got a hint for all of you that love keeping fish. You can save a ton of money buy feeding your fish only dried mealworms. You can buy mealworms from stock feed stores for less than 8 dollars for 3 pounds compared to pet stores ripping you off buy selling you expensive feed. Go buy the same mealworms as they sell for chickens. I have feed my fish Thees mealworms for 10 years and they are very healthy and beautiful too. I never feed live feed to my fish. Live feeder carry deseed plus it makes your fish attack everything that moves. Mealworms are very healthy for your fish and stock stores sell them cheep remember dried mealworms the same mealworms they sell for chicken feed. Your fish will love them and grow very healthy too.

    Agree with you 100% about the tank size, unless you have some serious filtration. I had 2 large power filters hooked up to a ten gallon tank filled with an under gravel filter and about 6 inches of gravel. I fed this into my 125. worked very well and cut the water changes down to a minimum. I also had some floating plants in both tanks to help with water quality. Worked very well.

    For some reason all my Oscar's have been super aggressive. I added a whole bunch of other new world cichlids with my tiny oscars in a 3ft tank but had to move them due to them attacking everyone, even bitting the net.
    Don't worry the 3ft is just a qt tank. I'm in the process of setting up a 6ft×3ft×3ft.

    We had an Oscar in our 75g planted tank. Bought him as a juvie, knew he'd get big. But we needed something that would clean up a swordtail explosion. Baby swordtails were his favorite food. But by the time he got big enough to eat the adults he was big enough to hassle everything else as well. I don't recall having a problem with the plants. Most of our plants are planted near rocks, maybe that dissuaded any uprooting. He was a phenomenal fish, I'd love to get one again. But 75g is definitely too small. By the time you add wood and rocks there just isn't much room for him to swim. I'm not running a bare-bottom abomination just to fit a fish.

    My large female Oscar only eats small fish that I spend money on. I bought a school of 18 3” fish, and they were gone in a few days.
    Then I decided to put some convict fry (around 1”) to cull them... she didn’t touch a single one and now some are pushing 2-5”.
    I thought it would be safe to add some Buenos Aires tetras that were over 2” each, and she ate them.
    She’s a diva. Her life-partner died (blind, and I’m guessing egg-bound) and she sulked On the bottom of the tank in the corner I removed the body for months.
    I adopted a friend for her, and she rejected it for a few months, but she’s finally accepted it.
    After the last water change, they started exhibiting spawning behavior, choosing a rock, “cleaning” it, and becoming very aggressive/territorial. I was trying to bring a worm to her a little while ago, and she ignored the worm and attacked my hand 😂
    I love them.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  5 лет назад

      I've had oscars do the same. Leave guppies alone in a tank that were there before the oscar and eat anything else that was small enough afterwards. So weird. Sounds like you may have a pair!

    • @mckflurry
      @mckflurry 5 лет назад

      Prime Time Aquatics
      I’m hoping it’s a same-sex pair like I had before. 😳 I don’t want to deal with fry, or parents protecting fry.
      The large female (around 12”) i currently have I saw laying eggs a year ago, the only other time she’s ever bitten me. I assumed the blind one, that she was so close to, was male, but unable to fertilize the eggs due to being 80% blind (rough estimate). After the blind one passed away, I discovered she had eggs in her ☹️
      I coulda sworn it was a male/female pair with how they interacted, but I was wrong.
      Her new friend is still pretty young, maybe around 7-8”, and has recently discovered that the 12” Vieja syns/ flowrhorn hybrid is a pushover 🤣
      I’m planning on moving my biggies outside to a 720gal fiberglass tank with a window in the coming month.
      As far as the plastic lid, it might have been condensation droplets collecting and moving.

    My oscars (3 between 5-7 inches) are with a blood parrot (4 inches), an arowana (12 inches), and a jaguar cichlid (6 inches). Do you think they will eventually fight? The arowana is the only fish that shows damage with a few ripped fins. They are in an outdoor 12 ft., 1,700 gallon heated pool pond. Once they grow a little more, I plan to add a redtail and maybe remove the parrot cichlid and then leave the stocking like that.

      @PrimeTimeAquatics  5 лет назад

      Sound like a great set-up. If I had to pick one fish in that mix to keep an eye on it would be the Jaguar cichlid. However, you have a huge space for them, and if there are some hiding spots for the oscars and jaguar it might work out. Just keep an eye on them. Would love to hear updates on the set-up as you progress!

    Great video! I plan on putting a six Oscar colony in a 650 gallon tank. You mentioned green terrors are typically too aggressive. I know from my ears a saltwater side of things that when we get to really large tank volumes a lot of stocking rules kind of go out the window. Would that possibly be true in regards to that colony of Oscars and a green terror?

    My girlfriend brought home an Oscar and I’ve had them before I put it in my 125gallon tank and he’s been growing up with baby convicts he’s big enough to eat the baby’s but they thrive with him he don’t eat nobody. Can you have an Oscar that is in a tank with probably 20 small 1 inch convicts and even some smaller than a half inch? Because he honestly doesn’t attack them. I wonder if he wouldn’t attack them later on since he’s been around all these other fish

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

      My Oscar is in a tank with dozens of OB cichlid babies and never seems to bother them. My Oscar is well fed so I don't think he wants to waste the energy to chase around small fish. Perhaps this is the exception, not the norm, but our 125 is one of our most productive fry tanks in the fish room with the large Oscar in it!

      Prime Time Aquatics so I’m not the only one that’s good to know and also I’m trying to get into that I just started watching your channel you should make a video on breeding your peacocks cichlids if that’s what you meant by OB I’ve been breeding convicts for awhile. Wanna do something else I set up a 55 gallon long in my room could be a 75 gallon idk but I have sand some slate and a few flower pots. You should make a video on what proper temps what you feed them and how you know when your fish are getting ready to breed water parameters ECT. I’ve watched a lot of videos and just not everything is included one video. One will tell you temp but not tell you water parameters and it’s just hard watching all these videos so it’d be cool if it was all in one. I’ll be definitely checking out your channel this video was my first but I would love to see some of that. Thanks for the reply

I am in firm belief that the 2 tigers have coupled off as they get on with no issues, i did read if there are females in the group the males will beat off other males. So maybe the Albino is also a male.

    I appreciate your knowledge about the care, water qlity, warnings about space requirement etc, but to give you my opinion, oscars or any other fish of the same size and nature are NOT suited to a home aquarium at all.
    Even that 125G looks too small for them. They only need to swing their tails twice and they've made from the one end to the other. They're constantly visible to each other and there's nothing there that they cannot see with one glance. (Still, your Oscars are doing better than most Ive seen.)
    Ive yet to see a 'big fish tank' that I found to be relaxing to watch. Looks like some people just like to keep big fish, and I just dont understand why. They dont seem to have a sense of proportion when it comes to fish-to-tank size-ratio. Your tank might be 100, 250 or 500 G, but compared to any natural habitat it's still a small cage, for a fish this big.
    What I'd like to see is an aquarium shop taking a stand: we do not sell fish, like Oscars, that are too big for home aquariums.

      @@PrimeTimeAquatics ok thank you very much i was thinking about the geophagus* as a tank mate to help keep the sand clean.
