- Coleman CT200U mini-bike simple hop-up gain up to 11 mph with no added parts except for a $1⁷⁹ spring. My wife and I have a pair of these and they are completely out of the box stock except for the mods shown in this video. Both of them will run 31 mph. These mods allows the governor to still limit the top speed, but will give more throttle and more power in the low to mid range. If you completely disable the governor, you will get "valve float" and eventually burn the valves. You MUST use heavier springs if you disable the governor. Both of ours floated the valves at 33 mph. Changing the springs would likely add a few more mph.

Great mod...while you guys and gals have the fuel tank off, it helps the annoying vibration noise of metal to metal if you throw a rubber washer under each of the front tank mounts and a nylon/fiber one on the rear...no more rattling of the tank.

I wish other RUclipsrs, would follow your lead as well as others, and use someone to hold the camera while your fiddling around with springs or whatnot. Whole bunch easier to follow and not get seasick!

Thank you very much for posting this. It is absolutely perfect and your video was very easy to follow. The only thing I did differently was kept the stock spring and cut it 3 coils. Then I left the factory welded stopper screw in and just dremeled off 3/16" to achieve the same amount of throttle travel. I hit 35mph and it just bounces off the governor at full speed

I like your spring mod. Going to clip my zip tie off tonight. And for those wondering, I have the bt200x, I weigh 255, and mine goes 31mph (gps) no problem. Mine went 17mph out of the box. I drilled the throttle screw and backed it all the way out and it went 24mph. Did the zip tie mod and it went 31 mph. I’m not sure it’s advisable to ride at full throttle on flat road for speed very long with the governor mod, but in a ditch it made all the difference in the world.

what is the point of the honda spring? for safety to return the throttle back down?

I used the Honda 16592-ZE1-810 Spring Genuine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Part, Colman a clone and already has the holes for this spring. Works great. Great Video too.

I bent the tab over that the screw ran into, and it gave me more potential. After that it was the spring around the throttle cable was the limiting factor, so I nipped 1/3 of an inch off of it and reinstalled. The throttle now opens as much as yours. Same result, different method. It saved me from finding/making a new spring for throttle reset. Thanks for the second modification. This is exactly the result I was looking for. The takeoff is faster, the clutch engages faster (don’t want to do the torque converter mod yet), and it goes faster, but it has a good limit.
I'm getting one tomorrow, but I was thinking the exact same thing you said, you can just been that little plate over instead of all of that stuff he just did, and then shorten the spring a little bit like you said, that's what I think I'll do tomorrow when I get it

Yep I followed your info, then GPS tested different settings, found that 29.5 mph is very best top speed without valve float. Great vid!

Thank you for this video! i just got a Coleman B200R 2023 Nov from Tractor Supply 599.99 pre black Friday sale and the governor spring hole relocation was a good mod. On my new bike the set screw wasn't welded and the cable config connection still used the same spring as it is different now on the new engine. Didn't need to buy anything extra! I'm a little bit 200lb + and i hit top speed of 32.6mph! Not bad for a free tuneup! i haven't done anything else yet. But, the torque converter is next.
Update……. I have added the torque converter, aftermarket carb and jetting, my own custom exhaust, throttle relocation kit, ARC billet rod and flywheel and it will do 44mpH oh and I removed the gov.

i followed a guy's video on drilling one more hole near the outside of the arm for the spring. I think this effectively disabled the governor.

Thanks I got mine from 19 mph to 30 mph from this video, thank you. I have a torque converter, 18lb valve springs, new carb jets, and 5/8 to 3/4 shaft for the torque converter coming in the mail. I plan on doing the governor removal when I get everything in. I hope to reach 50mph🤗
With the mods you listed, realistic expecration is between 40 and 45 mph
Stihl cars and cameras got there’s to do 50mph and the only thing they did on top of the mods I plan on doing is a 60t sprocket

Nice. I’m gona try this tonight. I ordered some springs and a flywheel and an air filter and I have a smaller sprocket. I just want like ten 15 mph and I think it will be perfect. Mine runs 20mph right. It’s brand new out of the box last night. But it tops out fast and even my 4 year old son wants it faster. (With me driving. Lol)

I'm going to do this on mine, but I was able to get 44 mph out of my minibike by just lengthening the big chain in back and removing the sprockets from the jackshaft. I then ran the chain directly from the clutch to the rear wheel. The bike has slightly worse acceleration but a much higher top speed and the governor is still present. What really made it work best was the chain being a little bit stretched
I done this now. Very sluggish take off. But top end is great. Mine hits 48mph. Going to change ratio next. The bike rides smoother now than before without jackshaft assembly.

I have always know that screw as a speed limiter screw so you can decrease speed when little kids are riding, and a accelerator return spring. Each his own. Have fun. Still working on mine, New rear sprocket today. 27 mph. And gaining. Lol
What size sprocket did you decide on? I'm thinking about trying a 44 tooth, for my ct200u. Still running oem jackshaft setup, and all gear sets are oem. Cracking 32mph right now, from this very video.

form GoPowerSports in Texas, installed today, and did the mods in your video. Did a test drive today,

I picked one up and had nothing but problems with the same thing hard time starting and no idle when it dose start runs rough
tried to adjust the carb no adjustments!!???find out its the California junk carb. so im in the process of doing the same thing now.

Thx Man. Did This To my Ct200uA yesterday while my grandpa was sleep. If he would have caught me putting the zip tie on my mini bike with the gas tank off I would have got yelled at and fussed at. I got 27 miles per hour on my mini bike yesterday but I could have went 30 but I was afraid that I was going to blow the motor up
I prefer taking out the govenor because it’s spinning freely at high speeds if your gonna do it do it the right way don’t pin your bike out for more then 2 seconds unless you want a rod up your ass it’s fun to do just know how to ride and be careful

I drilled the hole and moved the spring over on my stock bike. Went from 19 to 23mph. 4mph increase on a 155lb rider.

Nice video! I don't have to mess with that because I have a torque converter (and sprockets and stage 1, etc..) and my CT200U will go 51 mph down hill with governor intact, but I have one CT200U-EX without a TC and I wanted to experiment on that one.
I thought maybe moving that spring to the outer hole might do something but wasn't sure how much. I might try drilling a hole where you did and then hooking an up a tachometer just to see how fast it spins like that.
The only thing you have to worry about is valve float like you said, but also the cast flywheel flying apart. I think they can handle up to 5000 rpm or something like that, but it's always a risk to think about.
Another thing you could do if someone wanted more climbing power without hurting top speed too much is do this trick and stick a smaller sprocket up front or a 60t on the rear. They'd get more torque and still have an "ok" top speed with centrifugal clutch. 👍
Sucks about the 60 tooth still being out of stock at the 4 suppliers I would purchase from.

I think I'm at the threshold now. Running out of gear upstairs, and find myself backing off the throttle to keep the valvetrain safe. Whats your take on the smartest gear change? Go up a few teeth on the clutch, 10t ^ to 12t? Or bump the rear wheel sprocket down from factory 50t down to mid 40's tooth? Maybe that jackshaft double gear assembly (20t/10t) might be a move as well?
@@sidewayzmike i would start by going up one tooth on the clutch sprocket. It will increase overall top speed but will slightly decrease acceleration rate.
Decreasing the rear sprocket will boost top speed but low speed torque and acceleration will suffer.
Another option is to install a torque converter setup which would tremendously increase acceleration and top speed since is starts out with a lower gear ratio and as speed increases, it progressively increases to a higher gear ratio by means of a heavy v-belt drive and centrifugal variable drive pulleys.
I would also recommend adding the 18# valve springs. They're cheap insurance and can be installed in less than 30 minutes.
I am purely trying to run it out of horsepower by way of gear selection. Its very close to optimum. Hell, I haven't even busted the clutch bolt loose, simply to remove and measure what my actual crankshaft output shaft size im running! Option a: rear sprocket downsize. Option b: clutch upsize.

I cut/shorten the other spring you removed. Work fine.
I just trimmed the original return spring down so it doesn't bind and made the Honda style spring to add to it as a helper. Runs to about 25 MPH. Two return springs are better than one. I have a 2016 so the throttle screw wasn't welded. The throttle screw does not prevent the throttle on the carb from going wide open. It just limits the throttle linkage travel.
The throttle stop screw actually will limit top speed. Think of it this way, it's like putting a block of wood under the gas pedal in your car to keep you from pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor. The governor controls how much the carb butterfly opens. Example, if you twist the grip to half throttle on level ground, it will accelerate to a certain engine rpm and the governor will then restrict it to whatever rpm that is. Now, still holding half throttle, you start up a steep hill. You will notice that the engine will accelerate to try to maintain that particular rpm, even though you didnt change the throttle grip position. The carb butterfly may even open to full throttle when under a heavy load to maintain that particular rpm, but as soon as you hit level ground again and reduce the load of the engine, the governor will close the carb butterfly to only enough to keep that rpm. The govoner can open or close the carb butterfly fully at any throttle position depending on the load on the engine. Basically, the throttle stop screw limits the amount the throttle can be opened. Turn the screw in all the way, or better yet, put a longer screw in and watch your top speed magically disappear. Before you start the engine and the governor is relaxed, the carb butterfly is actually almost wide open. Scary huh? As soon as the engine starts, the centrifugal weights of the governor start spinning and close the throttle to idle position. What limiting this spring does is prevents the governor from closing the carb butterfly to its designed rpm limit. With this mod the governor is still fully functional up until about 75% throttle position. After that, the zip tie prevents the governor spring from stretching any further and preventing the governor from reducing the carb butterfly opening to its predetermined rpm maximum.
@@mickeymurrs Already know all this. The Honda GX200 and the clones that followed have been around for more than 2 decades. I commented because some think that you can't get full throttle with the screw in it's factory position.
The Honda linkage/governor design isn't scary at all. But when it is manipulated by people new to all this is when it gets scary. At least you took the time to understand how it works. Others not so much.

just tried this out and 100% works but make sure your spring isn’t in front of the throttle cable or else you can’t stop very well because the spring is sticking to throttle cable, that’s what my problem was, and you will get more speed if you don’t have that in the way.

I've had no issues at all. Starts just as easy as it did before modification.
Oh, look out for valve float (surging or popping out the exhaust at full throttle). It may or may not do it. Every engine is different. Neither of mine did it, nor my wife's. All three have the same mod. I did the 18# Honda valve springs on the two CT200U bikes but not on my camo CT200UEX. All three run the same.
This is legit it works great only thing you should prolly order is a performance short block there 260 sum but worth it
Hello you stated that on your mini you took the throttle spring off drilled a 3/32 hole and replaced the spring so should you then additionally do the governor too. Or can you do either fix to get the mini to run faster thanks..the video is quite well done and clear great job.
