    Aw, they look so timid fragile as they're drying their wings. It must be especially frightening to be so vulnerable for, what is to them, a very long time.

    Hi, I'm really interested in keeping some of these amazing moths but I'd like some information and any help you could give me!
    What do they eat?
    What temperature should they be at?
    What do you keep he moths in(as in cages, substrate, lighting)?
    How long do they take to hatch from eggs and do they require and help when in the egg?
    Thank you, molly

    • @groszek13you
      @groszek13you  9 лет назад +5

      Hi Molly,
      Answering your questions please let you know: Attacus atlas caterpilars feed on Syringa vulgaris L. or on Ligustrum vulgare L.
      Temperature as for tropical species should be not less than 25 C. I breed them in August at 28 - 30C. It is easy to keep them in a cage of ca 50x50x80 cm as adult. Younger you can keep in a smaller container, but good ventilated. Plant branches should be placed in tightly sealed bottles or a on a special green sponge.
      Concerning light, I can see no problem to keep them on daylight, but avoid direct sunlight. Simply place them in cage in shadow.
      Female lays eggs the same night as mating. larvae hatch in about a week. Simply place them in shadow in ambient temperature. Avoid high humidity.
      Good luck with breeding of the beautiful species!
      Adam

    Your camera work is the highest standard I have ever seen - thanks!
    I breed several Hawks, including Death's heads and can say that it is a pleasure joy and therapy for the world we live in, to feel connected to what we really are a part of! These larvae grow to about 12 cm and are not just huge, but ravenous and you can pull them off their food-plant and they would still carry on eating oblivious to you holding them! When they hatch into moths, they squeak when you pick them up and mate happily and lay eggs on privet/ potato leaves... try it!
    Thanks once more Adam, for just amazing work .. I would love to know what cameras you are using?

      Dear Barbora! The occurrence of Acherontia atropos caterpillars as well as in other sphingidae spike on the last segment is not still clear. Presumably, that is used to deter a potential enemy, but in fact, is soft and it can not be used for defense. It is doubtful that it is needed for another purpose.
