I just adore this episode. The excessive slapstick humor, the re-creation of that childlike wonder when they're opening the gifts, the destruction of the set. It's great!

I disagree. This episode is not up to his standards. This is just like a Tim and Eric episode reusing the same non funny tactic over and over. Of course that's my opinion. I just enjoy the more clever and thought out episodes but again that's just me.

I adore this video. It's a little out of character, but it's a testament to how willing James is to experiment with the structure of his content. It's so out of character that it's in character and I love it.

Bolverk-GTM well put! I definitely enjoy it quite a bit as well, and I think some of my favorite episodes are ones that are out of the norm for the Nerd. I appreciate his willingness to try new things in hopes of bringing some interesting variety and even new character perspectives. My only complaint is how “Step Brothers” the guest is. I understand it’s not like they cornered the market on goofy / stupid man children, but I feel like I’m seeing a B-roller Will Ferrell haha. Either way I love the episode.

It is a great ep, though, spoofing those ridiculous commercials that made these peripherals seem way more awesome than they were. He'd done it in spots before, but a full episode of it is just so much fun, especially as a Christmas ep, when many of us would have gotten this junk (thinking it was going to be awesome).

Probably the dumbest AVGN episode, and one of the best.
Honestly this is now one of my favourite AVGN christmas episodes just because of how great the pacing is and the production value. I just love the cover of auld lang syne at the end so much

This is definitely one of my favorite AVGN episodes. Somehow everyone's IQ just dropped like 40 points and it ramps down from there. That's a good thing because it gives the Nerd room to experiment with a different kind of comedy. And, as dumb as it is, it all works! I don't know who this Keith guy is, but he definitely should make another appearance at some point.

This seems to be the most polarizing AVGN episode among the fans, people either love it, or hate it.

Love or hate this episode, you gotta admit that "That's my autobiography" line is one of the all-time greats.
You can really tell James is a father now. This whole episode is basically a dad joke with all it's slap stick.
I don't normally like to explain why things are funny, but a lot of people seem confused.
The character of Keith Apicary, played by Nathan Barnatt, is known for his stunts and slapstick humor, mixed with his almost religious devotion to all things Sega. Having him as a guest on the show basically requires over-the-top slapstick comedy, as it is such an integral part of his character.
Taking it to this level of extremity only makes it funnier because they are mocking the absurdity of so many console "gimmicks" and failed add-ons that parents ignorantly would buy their kids for Christmas, thinking it was the next big thing. James has expressed before, how excited a kid can be, getting a new console add-on for Christmas, only to have it end in mournful disappointment.
And yet, even without the guest appearance by Nathan Barnatt's character, AVGN is also known to use plenty of slap-stick in his comedy. Just look at the Bugs Bunny episode or Robbie the Robot. AVGN always gets in fights and wrecks things.
This respectfully tips its hat to fans of Keith Apicary while sympathizing with victims of misleading 90's marketing schemes, and it makes for a nice Christmas special episode that is a bit different than the normal routine. But not so terribly different. It just kind of skips the analytical review portion and jumps straight into the chaos that so many AVGN episodes devolve into. :)

I dont think many people appreciate how brilliant this video is. This episode is literally a blast to the past in many ways like the slapstick humor, the references, the style, and the games while still having the same old Angry Nerd humor

While I did like this episode, one of my favorite things about AVGN is that, while James is playing a fictional character, he gives some honest feedback on what it's like to play/use a certain game or thing. My favorite episodes of AVGN are the "physical" ones, the ones where he reviews a console or a peripheral. What I like too is that he gives like a mini history lesson on the product and what it was like at release. This video was funny and interesting in its own way, but I would've loved to hear some history and actual review on all the things shown on the video. But hey, that's just me.
AVGN kind of started out as James, just with a few exaggerated quirks. Then he grew into his own entity, but James is still deep down in there, and he's a straight shooter.
I feel like this episode should've came with a disclaimer saying "no terribly marketed 80's and 90's products were harmed in the making of this video"

I've been watching AVGN since I was 12 years old. The episodes still have a lot of quality. But I really miss seeing James do mostly solo stuff. Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but I'll continue to watch no matter what!
