Great review. Happy to say that our 2015 LG OLED is still doing great (knock wood), but good to keep up in case she decides to call it quits on us. I guess paying $2,500+ on a 65" TV today is in line for what we paid in 2015 - for quality and reliability.
Good video here. Keep in mind that there is more to the "Brightness Booster Max" technology on the G4 than just the MLA layer. Several pieces of software accompany that technology overall and it clearly makes the G4 brighter than the C4. The interesting thing here is what the 97" G4 will look like without MLA? On the surface, it should fall somewhere between a C4 and smaller G4 w/MLA. But it still may have some of the brightness boosting software, still has the enhanced A11 processor, still has a heatsink, and still uses a G4 panel. What will it be lacking compared to the smaller sizes in PQ? For light controlled rooms, if it's just missing a few extra nits it shouldn't be a factor.
Similar to last year with the 83” G3 since it didn’t use MLA. It still had higher brightness in highlights than the C4. I wish I was ready to buy a tv I would’ve gotten it.
it's not close, get the g3. The g3 has mla. The C series barely changes year to year. Same panel just tweaking the software. The g4 is just a g3 with a new processor. It is very good this year, but it's not like last year was bad. Great last year even better this year. C4 processing isn't better than the g3. Take advantage of "last years model". An idea that is only viewed negatively because of corporations making us think we need a new one every year or that the tech even meaningfully changes. Last year, but 2nd best LG model for 1k cheaper than the g4.
@@paulcox2447that’s a lie, because even RTINGS even said the G3 is worse in colour banding, when compared to the C4, also the C4 has better 4k upscaling and has better audio, all while having the same hardware, so how is that possible then ?? It’s because they improved the processor and that’s why you getting better sounds from the C4 over lasts both C3/G3, image processing on the C4 is noticeably better when compared to both last years models G/C maybe research before speaking then you won’t be embarrassed or told off for lying
@@paulcox2447 The G3 was and is great but it should be said the MLA layer has changed between G3 and G4, the game mode brightness issue from the G3 has been sorted, tinting and banding has improved on the G4, the G4 is guaranteed 5yrs of WebOS updates (in addition to the new processor). By all accounts this year's model is a good step forward.
Love the reviews(as always!). And from what I learned watching this channels for quite some times, those Brighter OLEDs TV gonna pop up some Burn-In faster, specially w/ red colors. So my choice would be C4 for way cheaper prices (and ready to return + get another if I won the lottery of Bad Batches and get super Green Tint issue)
What’s with the obsession over max brightness these days? There are so many aspects of picture quality that are more important, like light quality and colour accuracy.
It's about the HDR not typical 'brightness'. Gives more depth and contrast if the screen can make more light, for HDR viewing. On standard content the brightness doesn't help.
@@Relic5150 I’m guessing you’ve never seen a reference CRT or plasma display like a VT60, PF50 or 500M. These are not bright by today’s standards, but still deliver better picture quality in SDR than most, if not all, modern displays. Still, my reset, voltage tweaked, calibrated and ABL-adjusted 500M will easily get bright enough to cause discomfort in a dark room if you for some reason wanted to.
The question I really need answered is if SDR, HDR and brightness overall is the G4’s selling point, am I leaving anything on the table buying the C4 when all I do is play games and watch movies in a pitch black basement? I feel as though I’m going to need to turn the brightness down on either to make it even viewable in said environment? Maybe I’m crazy, but the price is substantially different haha

I just bought a 65` C4 because I found a very good deal & also because I wont use it in a bright room or for gaming & I think the price difference was not worth paying for my situation (a room with not too much light & not for gaming)
I got my G4 a few weeks ago and have been experimenting with various settings. How much more energy does the G4 use in "normal" or "auto" mode verses if energy savings is off. I definitely notice a difference in pixel brightness between the settings.
I prefer the stand on the C4, how low does the G4 stand go down? looks a little too high, of course if you get a soundbar won't be as much of an issue.
You're only going to notice that shift in Brightness in the G4 with gaming and certain HDR content......it's ashame LG nerfs the C4 in game mode/HDR for Brightness. I don't even think it's worth it to buy the C4 currently as the C3 picture is almost identical minus the green tint of the C4.......buy the G3 or C3 and save yourself some $$$$$$.

I wonder if Rtings has any opinion on the tv shootout king of tvs that just happened where the G4 came in far behind the A95L and s95D. I'd be curious because they have the g4 and a95L tied for the best they've tested
The shootout only talked panels performance with some scenes. Not overall experience of the tv. Dolby vision was not tested Not mentioned input lags Not tested game modes Not tested system software Not compared number of inputs Not compared pass trough options. Not mentioned lg 5 yr warranty. Not compared sound quality(but advanced users will buy extra sound hardware). In general the g4 was sharper due to different pixel texture of woled vs qd. Samsung in other reviews was mentioned to have poorer motion processing. Lg out of the box in DV barely needs tweaking according to other reviews. So g4 is still not a bad tv. But it al depends on needs
@masomaf yeah I have the g4 and love it. Was just curious if they had an opinion cuz alot of ppl are returning the bravia 9 and so forth because of it apparently
Is there a G3 vs G4 comparison? I've seen some killer deals on the G3 and since I'm shopping 77in+ the price differences really makes me wonder if i should pay the premium for the G4

I have an LG A2. 99% of the usage is for watching streamed content (mostly sports) which is sent at 720P, 30 and sometimes 60 FPS. Would there be a noticeable difference stepping up to a C4?
Rtings, would you help me decide between 77' LG C4 and 65' LG G4, same price, 10 feet viewing distance, no gaming, YT and Netflix, many thanks, keep up a good work
Great comparison review! I bought the 65 c4 during black Friday. I’m upgrading from a vizio led. This will be my first oled. I couldn’t justify spending $700 more for the g4. I do plan on gaming but i’d say watching media 70% and gaming 30%. Hope i’m not disappointed in the c4.
Same panel, so no difference in color volume. Samsung qoled vs kg has color volume difference because kg use while less that reduce the color volume in bright scenes
Color gamut is the same. Color gamut refers to the amount of colors they’re capable of covering. The g4 has better color volume because it’s able to achieve brighter colors.

I use a 65 inch G3 as a gaming PC monitor in my bedroom and I seriously don't think anything is going to get that big of an edge over it for a long time picture wise. By the time I replace it we'll probably have 240hrz ultrawide curved TV's lol. Playing Doom 3 on this thing with my original xbox's native HDMI port makes the game look alot newer than it is. This is true for many older games on this G3, you can get alot more out of the color and see much better in darker games like Thief 1/2, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex.
Thank you. Another great comparison! Really appreciate your comprehensive reviews and I love when you can add humor to the discussion! Consider a showdown video... if I had a $1000 in a bright room- what would you buy?

I was going to get a C series based on the initial C3 vs G3 reviews being like "it's only a little brighter", then I saw them both in real life and the C3 was fine but the G3 blew me away. Point is, I really don't think these reviews of hardened TV reviewers capture the subjective experience of seeing these TVs in real life. Maybe you also think MLA isn't worth it, but I strongly advise you see panels in real life to get that feeling of whether or not it is worth it to you.
absolutely agree with this. Talk specs and tech all you like. Go and see the tv's in person in a shop. the G4 stands out much more than any other TV I've seen to be honest.
C4 has almost ruler flat frequency response compared to G4. Especiallt in low volume levels where most consumers will use the TVs. Both tvs have similar low cut off frequency. Why did you give G4 higher score? 🤣 @rtings
the bass hump, the thing is, that bass hump in room will sound better. It's even just a raised shelf, nice and even but increased volume. The TV doesn't have low bass so an extra bit of kick at 100-300hz, midbass, is the next best thing. A bit more emphasis on the lowest notes it CAN hit. It'll subjectively sound better, no question, as someone who is very into audio and measurements to a flat response that doesn't go any lower. Small speakers in a big room.

The LG G3 OLED does get a bit dimmer in Game Mode. It's especially noticeable with smaller highlights, which are significantly dimmer than they are out of Game Mode. Bright full-screen scenes, for their part, aren't impacted!
If you look strictly on paper, the S90d is brighter. I personally had the opportunity to watch both TVs side by side. And I can say that the C4 is actually brighter, in hdr and sdr mode. I don't know why it is like that, maybe because of picture processing or something else.
Too bad that you have not mentioned one of the most important aspect of the G4: it supposed to have a much larger color volume due to the MLA panel. Which means that it should be able to cover a much larger area of the rec. 2020 color space.
MLA has blooming for me and sometimes it's pretty bad. I have a G3 and whenever there is a sunlit window or a big light it takes over the screen making the areas around it significantly brighter and washed out.
The G4 picture has better highlights than C4. If you have the money go with the G4 but you’ll be happy with the C4 as well or for almost about the same price. Go with the G3 instead.
So Im ready to get either the C4 or the G4. I will only be streaming both old and new content. I do have a sun room that is behind my tv stand so sunlight can be an issue, Is it worth the extra for the G4 based on some sun and no gaming?
Panasonic and Philips have models z95a and 909 with an even brighter version of the g4 panel, and they both do better processing, unfortunately both TVs are very expensive
i actually want the soap opera "live" effect. i'm split between the s90d and the g4. don't want s95 due to one connect box with dropout issues. it would be mostly used for dvd/blue ray and over the air football. sony supposedly is the best at that but it's also costs double and the other factors on rtings lists it worse than s90d and g4. would the g4 be worth $1000 extra for better processing?

I have the 55inch G4 and imo it is underwhelming paricularly its supposed superior upscaling which was why I bought it and not the samsung given that the sony a95 has mysteriously been withdrawn from sale in Australia. The upscaling is totally underwhelming given that on a panel with such high resolution low res files really look bad without good upscaling. I can see every fault. The other issue is webos which I have never been a fan of. I try and navigate menus to improve the picture but incredibly frustratingly come to a dead end when colour adjust and sharpen adjust are greyed out even in personal picture mode. Dont have that problem with my Phillips and particularly not with my old Pana Oled which runs the discontinued firefox os which is breathtakingly intuitive and simple to use. I would take it back if I could and yes, there is that greenish hue. If anyone can tell me how to adjust that I would appreciate it. I believe I saw an adjustment somewhere but the menu is so not intuitive I haven’t come across it again.
I own a C2 42" and I will only upgrade to a new 42" if either mine breaks, which is unlikely, or the new one is MUCH better using MLA and the 2 feet. The G4 is just too expensive and too big. I would pay a bit extra, if G-Sync using the new Mediatek chip is included.

Usually game at night in a dark room. C4 has been great
Thanks
Same. Except I have an LG C2 48’. HDR calibrated + Game Optimizer and my Series X = No complaints.📺🎮💚
Excellent comparison review. Thank you.
Amazing work as always! Please keep it up!
This 💯 who cares about nits if upscaling, pq, colors are worse..
It's about the HDR not typical 'brightness'. Gives more depth and contrast if the screen can make more light, for HDR viewing. On standard content the brightness doesn't help.
It’s because that’s Oleds big weakness
More brightness makes the entire picture looks better. Literally everything about it.
How big is the picture quality difference 🎉between those 2 in a complete dark room, just on 4k hdr movies?
The question I really need answered is if SDR, HDR and brightness overall is the G4’s selling point, am I leaving anything on the table buying the C4 when all I do is play games and watch movies in a pitch black basement? I feel as though I’m going to need to turn the brightness down on either to make it even viewable in said environment? Maybe I’m crazy, but the price is substantially different haha
No you're not crazy in fact reading your comment you made reasonable real-world in user intelligent points to consider. That's why I thumbs up your comment
Its a shame Samsung dont use their best processors on the QD oled models, otherwise the choice would had been pretty clear cut, especially when it comes to gaming. So, now we are stuck with "Should i go with LG cause of the better processing + DV & DTS, or should i go with Samsung because of color brightness and better game mode 🤔" torment ...
Lg g series 5 yr warranty is also a thing I consider.
But Samsung's TVs are garbage quality, regardless of how good the tech is. Terrible software and long-term reliability.
@@mattspeer01 i hear that a lot people were returning the s95b a lot on forums
Samsung might be cheap after a few months.. they always do weird things with pricing on their products
But I like quality and good software
Samsung tvs have always been sluggish. I’ve had 3.
Wonder where MLA or QD-OLED goes from here
There’s no reason they couldn’t be combined, right?
@@CalebPerez The only reason LG uses MLA is because the woled panel itself if very inefficient since it's scatters light a lot (which is why MLA is there to 'focus' it) whereas QD-OLED is efficient where it doesn't scatter much.
It'd probably just end up being a big price jump to implement for little benefit
Maybe we will move to pholed or qdel in a year or two?

I got my G4 a few weeks ago and have been experimenting with various settings. How much more energy does the G4 use in "normal" or "auto" mode verses if energy savings is off. I definitely notice a difference in pixel brightness between the settings.
My C4 doesn't have those green tint though
Nice simple and easy-to-understand review.
Good job!
I prefer the stand on the C4, how low does the G4 stand go down? looks a little too high, of course if you get a soundbar won't be as much of an issue.
I wish the G4 came in 42" so I can use it as monitor. I would replace my C2 in a heartbeat.
And to, The G4 might be over bright and washing out the image which if your turning down brightness you might as well get a C series. But no one talks about that

You mentioned quickly about a LG M4, is it the same quality in picture etc as G4 the one difference being it’s wireless? Anyway I can’t really find that tv for sale, maybe it’s for special needs for a small group of people
I wonder if Rtings has any opinion on the tv shootout king of tvs that just happened where the G4 came in far behind the A95L and s95D. I'd be curious because they have the g4 and a95L tied for the best they've tested
The shootout only talked panels performance with some scenes. Not overall experience of the tv.
Dolby vision was not tested
Not mentioned input lags
Not tested game modes
Not tested system software
Not compared number of inputs
Not compared pass trough options.

I have an LG A2. 99% of the usage is for watching streamed content (mostly sports) which is sent at 720P, 30 and sometimes 60 FPS. Would there be a noticeable difference stepping up to a C4?

I'd be curious how brighter G4 effects the life cycle of the Tv.
G4 55in. Rs??
Great comparison review! I bought the 65 c4 during black Friday. I’m upgrading from a vizio led. This will be my first oled. I couldn’t justify spending $700 more for the g4. I do plan on gaming but i’d say watching media 70% and gaming 30%. Hope i’m not disappointed in the c4.
The C4 is still an amazing TV, hope you enjoy your purchase and first OLED experience! 😄
Why didn’t u even mention Color volume and Color gamut? Isn’t that one of the biggest advantages of the G4 and MLA tech?
Same panel, so no difference in color volume.
Samsung qoled vs kg has color volume difference because kg use while less that reduce the color volume in bright scenes
@@haukionkannel what about Color gamut.
Color gamut is the same. Color gamut refers to the amount of colors they’re capable of covering. The g4 has better color volume because it’s able to achieve brighter colors.

LG G4 all the way, 77" model is in the house, one of the best all-rounded TV!

Agree 100%. As a diabetic, my eyesight fluctuates daily and bright monitors/TVs can make my condition worse.
I wonder if they made C4 bad for gaming on purpose. I saw several comparisons and C4 just looks bad in game mode
Why do the greens look artificial on both of the tvs, it is just a camera thing?
Poor processing. The LG ranked WORST brand overall by a huge margin in the annual king 👑 of TV shootout in NY by value electronics.

@@paulcox2447 I’m a TV soun designer myself and I have countless hours on this subject. What you say is true for music but it can make the dialogue muddy, so I can partially agree with you. The point is that I want the return from rtings. Because they’re running the Tv’s room calibration beforehand, wnich is expected to correct FR.
So If we’re going to evalute subjectively, then why rtings is providing in depth audio test measurmenets? Are their result objective + subjective? Then why I cant see the objective and subjective scores seperately?

I haven't noticed any green tint on my C4. Must've been either lucky or the manufacturer for the European version uses different components
My G4 has a reddish tint around 1/4 of the bottom, a greenish tint in the middle. This tint shifts depending on how far I am from the screen or if I am standing or sitting.

C4 vs G3 please. Does the G3 suffer from the same game optimizer issues?
@ 85ish inch size I can't decide between Sony Bravia 9 vs LG G4.
It’s super confusing between Bravia 7,8,9 and c4, G4. I have super bright room but want top notch image processing.
MLA has blooming for me and sometimes it's pretty bad. I have a G3 and whenever there is a sunlit window or a big light it takes over the screen making the areas around it significantly brighter and washed out.
My room is mostly dark, Does MLA matter for me? Might get the C4 instead of the G4
The G4 picture has better highlights than C4. If you have the money go with the G4 but you’ll be happy with the C4 as well or for almost about the same price. Go with the G3 instead.

This is not true, in fact we had to question if the opposite was true. At the end of the day, as long you watch varied content and don't leave static elements visible on the screen for long periods, you shouldn't have any issues with either panel type. You can learn more about the differences between QD-OLED and WOLED in more detail, including burn-in, here: www.rtings.com/tv/learn/qd-oled-vs-woled
Oleds dull with a auto bright limit you can't turn off. With only a half life compared to a direct lit tv, you have to have it on stand by.
Okay let's seriously no sarcasm no insults meant consider your comment to be fact. The problem with your comment is that you left out a specific detail in that which generation of OLED and which panels are you talking about in particular that have that problem because that can matter. Thorough Details Matter

The G4 is just too expensive and too big.
