Thanks, Fil, for doing this analysis! White Room is one of my all-time favorite tunes and this version with Sheryl Crow is stellar. The energy coming from the audience in Central Park along with the incredible musicians all lend themselves to a first-rate performance. No, I had not picked up the guitar mistake before but, once you mentioned it, I could hear it clearly in the playback. Thanks again!
All right!! Into the red on my cool-meter! It's interesting to me how the background visual display mimics the earliest psychedelic light shows...like lava lamps and kaleidoscopes! Great analysis and guitar demo!

Ah yes, how fitting that Fil is talking about mistakes given that Eric Clapton was Sheryl’s self acknowledged favourite mistake. So much so that she wrote a song about it with same title.
The thing about mistakes in live performances particularly with loud rock songs is that the audience quickly forgets about them as long as the band keeps playing and doesn’t continue to falter. I personally don’t expect the songs to be played note for note like the recording so deviations can be easily forgiven.
The relationship was doomed since he’s a Strat guy and she plays a Les Paul. 😞

What an awesome video. I grew up in a time when "Clapton is God" was spray painted on a lot of highway underpasses. I was too young to "get it" and then later i heard the studio version of "Layla" when I was driving and I've been hooked ever since. I'm surprised that I liked Sheryl so much in this. I like her but never considered her on par with Clapton. And I don't mind the mistakes. It keeps the guitar heroes that much more human!
Then there's the version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from The Concert For George, where Marc Mann plays all of Clapton's original verse parts perfectly. Besides also playing with E.L.O., Mann does a lot of work on film scores with Danny Elfman.

Sheryl's multifaceted voice can go into high ranges - almost surprised she didn't choose to take her lines one octave up. It would have been pretty! .Maybe they wanted the tough, bluesy, more macho sound,.
When I see these two perform together, can't help thinking they should've stuck it out.. so much personal & musical chemistry & mutual respect.. There's nothing better than watching musicians play when they are super happy with the music & with the personnel onstage!!
They are always fun to watch together, especially when they perform My Favorite Mistake. I hadn't seen this performance before. Love Clapton, and Crow is so often underrated. Love that you talked on mistakes. Great video Fil.
I love Paul Gilbert’s lessons! He plays and talks about and still acts like an excited young guitarist. His melodies are awesome and serious and funny. Between Paul Gilbert and tomo fujita. Those two guys have ignited a child like passion in playing that I haven’t had since I was 11.

Hi Fil! I love Eric Clapton.....I always think of I Shot the Sheriff for some reason...that was when I first became really aware of him as a solo artist. Of course he was in Cream! Sheryl Crow had a gorgeous voice too! Quite good together! Good video you chose tonight! ✌️

Great video but been a fan of Clapton since he started! Sheryl has a lot of talent and have seen her in concert. She's a class act as well. She compliments this song greatly. Did a lot of partying to this song back in the day when it came out. Great memories of great days in music!

I really loved that you discussed how even "the best" often makes mistakes on stage. In many ways it's very similar to acting. If you "flub" a line on stage, you have NO OTHER OPTION but to continue on as best you can, which is why performing live is always like doing a high wire act. Once on a London stage, the great Lawrence Oliver accidentally spoke a key line of a Shakespeare play way too soon, a mistake that he never, ever forgot. Once he had committed to saying that ending line, there was nothing left to do but bring down the curtain, 45-minutes too early. Oops!
There is one thing I noticed about this great Cream tune with Cheryl Crow. While Eric always played the rhythm parts on Cream's recordings, on stage they only played as a TRIO, losing that "extra" guitar part. When watching this performance, I realized just how incredibly FAT their sound was when utilizing those extra guitars! I often think how Cream would have benefitted from a rhythm guitarist on live gigs, but I suppose that many fans would have been looked upon it as "cheating." Who knows?
Our niece is a professional actress and we saw her in a play in NYC. At one point an actor stopped talking and just froze up for what must’ve been 20-30 seconds, before running off the stage. The rest of the cast started up again. After the performance, we asked our niece what happened and she said she had no idea because after he ran off the stage he went right out the theatre door.

That's as bad as it gets. The only other Broadway story I heard that stands a chance was when a big name actor was doing a show, and during a dramatic moment, he let out a tremendous FART that was so loud that it literally rattled the chandeliers. There was no dog around that he could blame it on, so he just soldiered on. What else can you do?

Great analysis Fil! Watching Sheryl Crow here with Eric brough to mind a bit of a tenuous link. Ms. Crow covered "Keep On Growin' " some years back. I think Eric co-wrote that song with Bobby Whitlock when they were members of Derek and The Dominoes. And I think it was also covered by Delaney & Bonnie. Sheryl and her very competent band do great job and it's well worth a listen. Thanks Fil. Stay safe.

This is a great one. Never saw this performance. Did you ever see the "Oh the Married Men" performance of Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow? It was on SNL when I was a kid, but it always stuck with me. Thanks! (Love your Squier. We have one of the Classic Vibe 50s Stratocasters. Not terribly expensive, but plays nice).

As for EC continuing on after making a mistake, I think for many of us we learn at a young age to stop and reset after making a mistake, not just with music but almost every acquired skill. I feel that after gaining some level of competency it is far more useful to learn to continue on through to the end whenever practicing to develop that resilience to mistakes.
White Room is a great song. But I have better news. Because of you I have returned to guitar. I learned Wagon Wheel. My analysis shows that the chords are G, D, Em and C. It's a really fun song. Thanks.
I forgot to offer a suggestion. Becaus of its unique position in the history of British RnR music: John Lennon was to say of this seminal recording, that there was nothing before and nothing after that could be described as uniquely British Rock and Roll. The song is of course, Move It.
The record is of course by, Cliff Richard and the Drifters.
There is no film of the original Drifters available but to listen to the work of session player Earnie Shear whose background in music lays elsewhere, is like listening to -- something that came out of the night and from seemingly nowhere. None of the Shadows were present on this session, just the two session men, lead and bass and Cliff's two mates on rythm and drums, however, there is a film, and it's in colour, of The Shadows backing Cliff on an early TV show seemingly iust a few months later. But its not the same, but still vary good. There is another live outing during a Cliff Richard reunion concert in around 2009. Its a big production with a second verse added thats kinda cute, but to my mind unessesery.

Hadn’t noticed those mistakes, although I once heard Eric play a massive bum note in a slow section of a solo (Manchester Apollo - Money and Cigarettes tour 1983). Some people laughed and he just looked up, grinned, shrugged and then pulled out all the stops as if he had a point to prove (which obviously he didn’t). That was the same gig he caught out Albert Lee, calling him up for a solo he wasn’t expecting (in Lay Down Sally) - it took him a couple of seconds to react ... Clapton liked to keep his band on its toes 😉 🎸👍

I think that Clapton is one of the few artists who could make a mistake and recover, and a majority of people (myself included) would miss it and the rest (musicians) would not care.
Sheryl is amazing and they make a powerful team.
I like this song because the verses are nice and jumpy, and the lyrics are nonsense. The music content is hard, complex and very pleasurable to my ears. Thanks for breaking it down.
Oh, I remember that song very well. In my first year in high school, I had a crush on this girl who lent me the 45 record version of this song, when it first came out. I made the mistake of bringing it over to a friends house to let him ear it. Well, his older brother being quite the rotter, scratched the crap out of it on purpose. I was in quite the panic because I was supposed to give it back to her the next day. Luckily for me I begged my mum to drive me to the only record store around, and I bought a new one. What a relief.
Loved it! Some shows you want exact cord for cord play i.e. Pink Floyd otherwise creative changes are a one time experience, which create memories.

Great sound from a great duo. I didn't notice any mistakes because they are so good. Its like actors at a live play: they know how to work around errors.
Fil : With 2 guitars, have one strum a " C " chord and the other strum an Am chord. They produce an am7 chord and it sounds really good! ( Both play the chords at the same time).

Pete Brown ( lyricist) wrote completely different lyrics and called it Cinderella's Last Goodnight but Jack Bruce rejected it. Pete then pulled out an earlier poem and called it White Room. He said it was a bit of a miracle that it worked!

Fil, I think your guitar tutorial was more captivating than the performance. I love this song, but it seemed like the fire had gone out of Clapton. Ms. Crow was also quite subdued. But hey, musicians have bills to pay, too. I'm sure there are many times when performers are just going through the motions to fulfill a contractual obligation.

Loved this. I thought the female voice seemed to be just a little subsumed by the many different instruments. This may have been improved at the mixing desk.
You see, Fil, Cream as a three piece still has a firm grip on my memory and because White Room is a song I still listen to, a band with more instruments in a live production seems cluttered in comparison. A live recording is always going to be different because once a note is played its out there and gone with no re-takes for recovery.
A trombone player in a pub band I once enjoyed listening to, said, that bum notes are going to happen, the trick is knowing the next note to play to get out of it.
EC's plaintive sound is intoxicating - its really the second voice, or the third in this particular rendition of a song that can rightly be referred to as the Best of British.
Wow a triple treat - Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow and White Room! I love Sheryl Crow, but personally I didn't like her vocal performance in this song. It felt too low for her but she made the best of it. She does a great duet with Stevie Nicks, singing Strong Enough (To Be My Man). I'm very much looking forward to your analysis of Sheryl.

Great minds think alike...lol😜I was just, for the past few days, going through "my" musical taste; from the 60's, 70's when I was in grade school in the 60's and high school in the early 70's (well 1970 to '74 if you must know😉)and a common thread was Clapton! So, I have..."Buffalo Springfield", "Traffic", "Blind Faith", "CREAM", "Derek and The Diminoes", "Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young", and I know there's many more band that are part of this musical web. And I was reading comments from another person's video of Clapton ( can't remember the name of the chan) defending Clapton. I truly was shocked and voiced my 2 cents with "I thiught everyone at least "liked" Clapton. Anyway, maybe you could connect the dots for me, of the other bands influenced by Clapton's unique musicality?🤷🙏✌👌

Fil there is a great video of a live concert where Eric hits a bum note. He actually swears and the person editing superimposes a thought balloon with the word. It actually adds humour to the mistake. Sorry, just can't remember which performance.
This was a nice version, particularly with Crow's vocals singing the falsetto part - but the White Room from Live Cream Vol 2 kicks some serious butt
I am always up for a bit of Clapton and "White Room". I always wondered why the lyrics to 'White Room" were so hard to understand. The lyrics are penned by a poet, Pete Brown "nuff said" about that. I did wonder here "who the heck decided to put Clapton and Sheryl Crow on stage together" I then discovered that Clapton and Sheryl were just starting a 2 year romantic relationship, 'nuff said there also". Odd line from "White Room's" wiki page. That line would be "the song contains enough "hard rock menace" Well Ok there. I wonder if Eric gave Sheryl a few tips before this performance? About "guitar instructors". I am finding I learn better from the person just a few years more experienced than myself rather than the instructor with 30 years on me. I am thinking my "mega experienced instructor" is a bit filled up with beginning players.Thanks Fil.
