I was lucky enough to see him in Charlotte,on his 45th birthday. The first half of the show was good, but halfway thru the show, the band started playing happy birthday, and the whole crowd joined in.As you can imagine,Eric was deeply moved,so he stepped back, lit a cigarette, smoked about half of it,trying to compose himself. You seen him wipe his eyes, took a deep breath, stepped up and began playing.I have never, never, seen him,or anybody else, play with such emotion for the rest of the show.It will always be in my mind,as the greatest show I've ever seen, bar none.He is so good at playing on the fly,as you say,but that night was so special,I'll never forget it.

Besides being a superb player and songwriter, Clapton is a true gentleman. All those concerts and benefits he organizes, where his friends all show up and play with him, give you a sense of how much he is valued and respected. He's a real elder statesman of the rock and blues community. He reaches out to younger musicians, and gives generously of himself. Eric really is one of the greats. Amazing isn't it, how the British Isles, such a small place geographically, has had such a huge impact on the world of music. Back in the late 1950's and early 1960's, British musicians lifted the blues out of an undeserved obscurity, and gave it back to the world. They came to America, and learned at the feet of the men and women in the black community, who invented that musical style. At a time when blues music was fading away, Clapton and other British musicians took it very seriously, and had enormous respect for the men and women who wrote and played and lived the blues.

The UK's enormous and seemingly disproportionate contribution to world of guitar music might have something to do with their Celtic legacy of a millennia and a half of stringed instrument players and poets more than we have in the States. A wonderful legacy of Celtic storytellers-bards (Welsh, Scottish, etc.) and singers accompanying themselves on harps, not to mention the Anglo-Saxon scops and more. A wonderful legacy. And of course, the emigrants to the US brought their music and it took root here and added to the US musical melting pot. I guess it all comes full circle. The first time I went to Scotland and heard local music I asked myself why everyone seemed so interested in American bluegrass and country styles. It look me a little while to figure out I had it backward.

Seen him live 3 times since 1960s...he is a superb , melodious artist..just abhor his racist outburst ...from a man who has made a fortune from a disenfranchised ethnic group..many of his tutors had not got a pot to piss in.

I could listen to Eric Clapton play all day! Its almost like the guitar is an extension of him, or that he and the guitar are one. The term "playing with feeling" seems inadequate to describe Clapton's style because its beyond even that. What a great guitarist!

Fil, I once saw an interview where Eric explained his attitude to playing a solo was to think of it as the last time he might play the solo so leave everything on the table.. when you watch him it's almost like he goes into a meditation/trance and trusts that whatever comes through is meant to be. Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge (when do you actually get time to play?).

I was there! It was my first concert and it's the moment I decided to pick up the guitar.
Eric's never played better, in my opinion. And the way he played during these shows, was completely different to
anything else he's ever done. He was on fire throughout his entire residency at the hall, and I remember people
picking their heads off the floor with their jaws.
I've no idea why he was so damn good at that moment in time, but he was truly inspiring to listen to.
I owe so much to Eric for this, and it'll always be very special to me.

To Phil, Clapton is another one of a kind. Unique and a style no one can or has repeated. You know who the guitarist is the moment his finger hits a string. Always flawless and he studied some under the Great B. B. King. His foresight is similar to B.B. never saw either get nervous and both improvise to where it was even better or you thought that's what they meant to do. You Phil are the only one out there that does this new reaction thing and actually knows what you are talking about. Your really good dude. Keep up the good work.

I love Eric Clapton and I so appreciate these commentaries. Blessed to have seen him live twice in Canada in the late 80’s and around 2007. Fantastic concerts. I only wished I could have seen him play with Steve Winwood. Love their collaborations. A high school friend said often “Clapton is God”. It took me awhile to appreciate what he meant. While he is not God, his playing can certainly be mesmerizing and have an angelic feeling to it as I found this clip did. Thank you for your thoughts!

I had seen Clapton's 461 Ocean tour twice in L.A. oh so long ago. At the time it was just one of many concerts I was going to as a teenager, from Leon Russel to Styx, to Genesis (With Peter G.) and Pink Floyd and many other artists of the time. In retrospect, the one I am most glad to have seen, was Clapton. It wasn't about the 'show' like Lamb or The Wall, it was the music first. Once we got past the goofy guy wearing the vest and wig bouncing around on stage as a comedic warmup just before Clapton came on stage, it was all music. The man just stood there and the sound just enveloped you. I could have drawn a 6ft circle and put Clapton in it and he never would have stepped out of it. No, it wasn't a show, it was music. And it was amazing.

I loved and grew up on old stuff. C heck him out musically and vocally. So no a-hole can blither on about him being a drunk. I think he got better with age. I would like u 2 share both Eric and Stevie doing vocals as well as playing. I have been up in front of Eric 8 times, always made me and my husband shiver, dance and weep from it all. Even met him. Lovely man. Stevie, saw 4 times up close, 2 rows away the night he died. Very engaging 2 audience, looked u right in the eye, smiles, etc. The best I've ever seen. As a musician and a fan since age 9. Again Phil, please find live stuff w/ vocals of both of them. Peace, Roxy

What Eric does is untouchable, to play so clean , no pedals, soft and thin tone : every note stands for itself . It’s his challenge to play on the fly & clean ?
I never hear anyone do any of his songs & match him on the fly,, they always resort to pedals , stock phrases & go hiding. That’s why he is so very good.
( I could say he is no 2 or 3 cause God is no 1)

Eric Clapton took me to the blues when I was a child in 1970. A lot of pure blues fans will look down at that, as they will cite Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters or the 3 Kings. But RnR Blues took me there.
Another musician and singer, at the same time that fostered my love for blues was Lowell George and his 1970 cover of 44 Blues. Most have never heard this version, but I wore out an LP playing it on a cheap turntable. Interesting cover, as it sounds like it was recorded well before 1970. That song led me to Howlin Wolf. Blues are a genre of music I never tire of. Good blues are still being recorded today and I get excited when I stumble on something new.
Fil, checkout Little Feat, Lowell George and 44 Blues/How Many More Years sometime.

"God" sums him up! Him and "Peter Green" back then(before he went AWOL) were just sublime English Blues Virtuosos and Blues writers and singers, right up there at the top! (With many others at that time!) The 60s London Music scene was the greatest in the world back then(they brought all the American Black blues guys over to play and launched their careers and the Blues I'm their later lives and it's why BB King always considered Eric Clapton like a son and Accredited him with saving and popularising the Blues and saving launching their careers to a whole other level that they would never have known otherwise! Like Buddy Guy then Henrix etc)
..My parents used to watch all those great artists every Friday and Saturday night somewhere in London usually Marquee Club or Ronnie Scott's or similar! My mother even saw Hendrix live before he broke the big time and went back to America! Those days Must have been TRULY AMAZING!! 👍🎸😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

I've seen Clapton 3 times & he's just amazing. I had seen him years ago then in 2018 & 2019. You can see he wasn't feeling well in 2018 but he came back in full force the following year. If you could review White Room from last year at MSG or really anything from that show I would love it! I never saw him smile so much & he was just full of surprises in that show. If you ever get a chance they have the full concert on here. Love this analyses of course! 🤘🎸✌

This is a brilliant tone - I was in London, all the way from Sydney Australia, and got tickets to the blues night. Apart form the Cream days this is arguably his best period since then IMO.

Appreciate this video very much. I've never been a huge Clapton fan. Not saying I didn't see his greatness, but I was always into Page. But this is where it's at. The jazz and blues incorporated here is not short of brilliant. Again, thanks for this review.

One night I was at a Jeff Beck Truth concert with Jethro Tull opening act. Mick Abrams was the guitarist. Across town Traffic and Delany and Bonnie finished a concert. They joined Jeff on stage and went into the Mystic

I love Tina Turner´s "What You Get is What you see" (1986). It was my dance and air guitar song. I wondered where you get such tight and creative studio guitar players. A few years ago I read that Eric Clapton played the guitars. I´m no Turner fan, but this song is great, along with "River Deep Mountain High."

Hey Fil, absolutely love your channel. I love that you have an appreciation for such diverse musicians, especially the country artists. Maybe you could do one of my favorites, George Benson playing Take Five at the 1986 Montreux jazz festival. Great performance! Also, I know you usually limit yourself to guitarists, but check out bassist Jeff Berlin playing the U.S. national anthem. Amazing technical performance.

Love the shirt. Great guitarists take you to a spiritual place... An ecstasy that only they can interpret. It takes the devotion of a monk to dispose oneself to the Muse... Love the emotion of this. It’s a gift to humanity. I think that these guys might think about paying the rent and all of that when they aren’t playing but I have to think that financial concerns get overridden completely when they are soling like this... He really seems like he’s somewhere else. Like on a mountaintop with heavy winds blowing. I know they are humans and not oracles per say but to me they’ve made a commitment and a bond with music that is what makes them “artists”.

Eric is another favorite of mine. Joe Bonamassa played the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago and Eric came out to do a duet. He was always one of Joe's idols. They played two different sounding guitars, Eric a Fender and Joe one of his Gibson's, 59 Les Paul I think. They played Further On Up The Road. You could tell they were both having a lot of fun. Joe said it was the coolest thing he had ever done! You do a great job on these, thanks!

As far as I know Claptons "slowhhand" nickname had nothing to do with his lack of shredding, when he broke strings on stage with the Yardbirds he took so long changing them that the crowd would get restless so their manager named him slowhand as a play on words from the slow hand clap(ton).

Clapton is known as the hardest working musician by a lot of other musicians. Mick has said it, Steve Winwood, Mick Taylor, Mick Fleetwood and a lot of others. You can tell he has his stuff down pat when he hits the stage.

Great reaction to Clapton. BTW, please consider checking out Weather Report and Jaco Pastorius. Also the Yellowjackets with Lyle Mays. This was known at the time as progressive jazz, but could not really be categorized. I know this is not exactly your genre, but they are old favorites of mine and I think you’d dig ‘em.

Back in the 70s he was # 1 with a great many of us kids. i shall never forget Sr George Harrison's concert for bangladesh in new york. Halfway into this once in a lifetime jam fest george introduced us to the band? He did this short roll call of some very big names like, Dylan, Leon, Preston, Ringo who received a normal kinda applause. However, when he got to Clapton I had to cover both ears it was that loud. He also mentioned something about some singers and a band that the Beatles themselves backed called Badfinger? Loved them too! Sadly, i could not even hear em very well during this concert because they were for some dumb reason playing acoustic guitars? Anyway was the best damn concert ever because Eric was a big part of it.....

    Hi Fil
Every great artist is immediately recognisable
    That's what defines greatness
You know if you're looking at Van Gogh or Dali and you certainly know within 2 notes you're listening to Eric or Santana etc.
They're the reason why most of us started to dedicate our lives to the muse
    Pure Soul...❤️
