For the past four years, Matt has been working on a project to help car collectors store prized automobiles, worry free, in West LA. The area has an abundance of wealth, industry, tech, and convenience to LAX airport, but no car storage facility tailored to the needs of the collector, stifling the car industry in the area. Now, in this series, get an inside look on what it takes to actually get a project like this done in LA. In a departure from cars, we're going to look at the construction of a massive garage, why and where we're doing it, and how it's so much more than just parking.

This question has been asked many times so i'm pinning the answer: when someone's car is on top, yes the cars underneath have to come out. We are mitigating the inconvenience of this in several ways: 1) only very rarely driven cars (or cars that don't drive at all) will be stored on top. 2) We have a proprietary app which a member can use to notify us at any point or time they would like their car. If they are more than a few blocks away at the time they let us know, we can get the car down in about 10 minutes, so no one has to wait. You can also schedule to have your car ready for you at any time. 3) We have VIP spaces where, if you are certain you don't want to be on a lift, we can have your car on the floor and ready at all times.
Do rental rates change based on storage slot height?
TheSmokingTire I remember you touching Bases on this on your other videos
@Fansthemans Zanz tilt-up walls would require additional excavation on the outside to place the wall upright, apply waterproofing and backfill with drainage material. I think with the shotcrete they can get the building closer to the property line and maximize the underground storage area. Also the tilt-walls require a huge crane to lift them into place, which they may not have had a place for at the time. And of course there's the time required for the tilt panels to sit and cure on the slab, and the slab may not have been big enough to pour all the panels at once, which would stretch out the schedule much longer.
@Fansthemans Zanz Tilt-up walls generally work best for buildings with a huge floor area to height ratio, such as large warehouses that are only 40-50 feet tall.
But why did you go for this semi diy solution and not a much better thought out existing system? You´ll find systems that do everything automatically and much more space efficient.
As a person that did concrete shell work for buildings its nice to see someone be so interested in the work. Some people would treat us like the scum of the Earth (especially in hospitals) Its just weird how underappreciated some jobs are. Thanks for shining a light on a hard and physically demanding job that people do everyday. And trust me most of the heavy set dudes could probably impress you with the shit they can do, just because they're big doesn't mean they're lazy.
sk84life311 It’s crazy because it’s literally the most important part of the build, especially in an earthquake prone area. I think it’s because people just see the pour, assume that’s all their is to it, and don’t realise how much work goes into it.
Also people just think of it as being bland and grey but there’s some amazing finishes that can be achieved with/on concrete.
Why did people in hospitals treat you so poorly?
Daver G well, I’m one of those specialist doctors and always find it interesting to witness highly skilled ppl working, be that steelworkers or carpenters or electricians or microsurgery like I do. I love to watch other ppl being able to do work I have no skills in. This collector cars warehouse is most impressing! I’m equally as stoked by the concrete as you are! Maybe I’ll have one of my cars sent over to LA from Europe just to keep it in the best car storage in the world!
You will never be appreciated for your hard work by these people in that area. You just exist for that purpose and they don't care.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ yeah man I do concrete repair, polishing, staining, etc and you can make concrete look damn sexy. Ive repurposed 70 yr old concrete and polished it to look brand new.

Girl: How thick?
Me: QP1000 Quad Stackers Double Thickness.
UNDERRATED COMMENT!
You said a mouth full.

Matt: How much Rebar?
Engineers: Yes
I like to imagine the confusion of the driver who has to deliver a max weight load of rebar to a dense, small footprint area, scratching his head and wondering what the fuck someone is building that needs that much god damn rebar
All.The.Rebar.
Matt I think you need to change jobs from talking about cars to talking about buildings, because I absolutely loved listening to this.
Was waiting for you to say "big shiny balls"... disappointed with "orbs" hahah
thank you for commenting this so I didn't have to
Was waiting for the perfect segway to a chassis powder advert there... "Next to these giant balls. You know what else takes giant balls? Driving 800hp supercars. And what better way to keep those giant balls clean and dry than with CHASSIS!!" 😂
DEMONITIZED
I think Matt needs to host a building TV show. Just so enthusiastic and breaks down the technical stuff well
"And something called canvas" *college students collectively screaming*
David LaHaie *vietnam flashbacks of me trying to turn in a paper whole canvas crashes *
I grew up using BlackBoard. Canvas is an upgrade. I only cried for 5 minutes.
@@jdm3gee14 i only had to suffer with blackboard every now and then at my school because some teachers were abusing their elderliness as an excuse to keep using what they were familiar with .
You can tell Matt isn’t as smart as he tries to seem, when he doesn’t know what Canvas is hah
Yes lol! You haven’t visited your account in two minutes.... we’ve changed your password.
I think Matt was more interested in those QP1000 Quad stackers double thickness than his entire Foxbody project.
I always choose my luxury car storage spots based on how thick and solid the floor concrete is.
Go ask Corvette if they care about strong floors... and don't forget to mention sinkholes. :)
Sick build! You should consider putting some type of mirrors on some of the inside walls so patrons can see their car entering or exiting while driving.
Just don't try to drive into the mirror thinking it's 'space'...
nickzzzx1 That’s a really original idea
I had a few on the walls and roof of my bedroom in my college days.
Yeah that's exactly what's needed in LA, put mirrors where all the douche bags park so they could stair at a mirror when driving and kill someone.
But that's a NSX
I came for the parking tour - stayed for the LSB E46 M3. Killer.
except it's smg so it's trash
came looking for this comment
is that zack's?
@@headcas620 Can you even afford one?

Now I'm even more of a Matt Farah fan. This is super cool.
This is incredibly impressive from an engineering standpoint!
That it is.
Yeah and expensive ha
sounds expensive, I wonder how much Matt invested in this
Well, imho huge cranes, super high skyscrapers, oil plattforms or ships are much more impressive than a bit of concrete and some elevators... but okay ;)
Man this is so well thought out, I hope it works out
I wish I had some Double Thickness for my wife....unfortunately I'm cursed with Double Quickness lol
This sound like something AvE would say....

I’m in commercial real estate development and have never heard anybody explain the basics of urban development so clearly. Matt is a gifted communicator with unusually clear thinking.
Hoovie: check your my new lift
Matt: hold my beer
i love how matt takes interest in this build and is proud of every aspect. it really showcases every trades work and how he learns about every thing that goes into building it. wish there was more people interested in the trade instead of just bashing the workers and calling the stupid.
This is actually so interesting, reminds me of How it Works on the discovery channel
This was really cool!! I love all the history with it being in the Howard Hughes compound. Good stuff Farrah.👌🏽
I love LA and visit frequently (Redondo & Playa Del Rey). This is a great idea!!!
With that said - I can’t imagine the financials on this.
It's gotta be crazy expensive
One of our specialties will be serving folks just like you! If you live out of town and come to LA frequently for biz or pleasure, having your own sports car here is much more rewarding than having your own apartment or home. With our free LAX pickup and dropoff service and less than 2 miles from the airport, we are an ideal solution for these folks, because we also have the members lounge, which they can use as their office if they like while in town. It's more than just a garage, it's a LA home base for you and your car, and even if you get a nearby hotel (there is a Mariott 100 yards away) it's far cheaper than a crib in this part of town.
TheSmokingTire this is absolutely amazing. I used to work at MSFT which is further down in PV at The Reserve (the old USPS sorting facility turned office building) and if I still lived there I would have loved to be one of your customers. Excited to see your business grow and what the future holds for you and the channel!
TheSmokingTire You gotta try to lock in some discount with the Marriott, I can see a lot of Arab money types flying their cars over to you for their holidays and stuff (sounds crazy but in the summer there’s loads of Lambos and stuff around London on Middle Eastern number plates).
Ballers like that won't want the Mariott; they will stay on Ocean in Santa Monica or at Soho House or something like that, which is just fine too.
Congratulations on your ambitious project. I wish you success. As a car enthusiast and fan of your videos, this looks totally brilliant. It was also nostalgic for me to see those picture of Hughes Aircraft and the surrounding area. I got my first engineering job at Hughes Aircraft in 1965. I can still remember that first job interview. I could never have imagined how that facility would morph into what you showed in this video.
I look forward to the next installment.
Great video and you did a good job explaining everything. I deal with concrete and soils as a geotechnical engineer everyday and it's great to see someone get excited about such mundane things.
Thanks! I'm still learning about it, and so I have been waiting for the architects and engineers to come tear me apart! Glad I didn't fuck it all up!
Taylor Elson I enjoy seeing all of it and his excitement too! I’m a N.I.C.E.T Level III Certified Soils, Concrete & Asphalt QC Inspector. 9 of 10 years spent with a geotechnical firm in Las Vegas. It’s an awesome field to work in!!
TheSmokingTire “horizontal column” that would be a beam. 😂👍
Excited for this one. Awesome project Matt, glad you’re sharing it with us subscribers of your original project!
When can we expect the cement truck one takes to be up?
I've been stoked for this strangely. Huge congrats man. I'm digging the construction updates in between podcasts and 1 takes.
In case of a zombie apocalypse, you have one hell of a place to build a base. Insane build, looks like they're doing a really great job and that's got to be so cool to be the mind behind such a great idea.
360p gang! super stoked for you Matt, you deserve every bit of success you achieve!
structural steel fabricator here. you're combining all my passions in life with this project. badass, my friend.
Use to think this guy was deuche. Watching his passion for this project and putting together a business like this gives me a new respect for him. Good luck with your new venture.
Cost breakdown would be just as interesting. LA 'tax' is a major component, no doubt. 🏁👍
As a designer this is an amazing duality. Cars & Concrete. Keep up the good work.
Yes! I was waiting for this. Very interested to see all things concerning the project.
Amazing and much-needed I can't wait to see it completed 👍🔥
and here i was impressed with the 6" pour i had done in my garage. absolutely incredible matt, thanks for sharing this!
Great video Matt. I'm a project manager with a structural engineering firm that builds apartments and garages including a few of the ones in Playa Vista. You might explain that the reason your foundation slab is 31" thick is to resist the hydrostatic pressure from the water table trying to push your building up out of the ground. Looking forward to future installments.
good point!
Such an interesting video tour! I wish you the best of luck with this venture. I am sure it will be a success for you Matt! 👍👍👏👏👏👏
when its full Matt will have rappers trying to make videos there
Can't wait for the other videos. Suoer cool. Like videos like this. Thanks Matt.
Very cool Matt! I can see how excited and passionate you are about this project!
Huge missed opportunity to plug ball powder with those huge "orbs" at the start of this vid.
Excellent video. Love your passion for the details.
In a world where basically everything is done to a bare minimum and given the least amount of attention possible, it's really nice for a change to hear someone wanting to build stuff properly. Definitely keep these videos coming! Watched the one you made with Larry on AMMO earlier, and was really hoping that you would do more of those and i'm glad you did!
Matt, that is a well tour explained out right thoroughly! I really like the design and structure you imagined it would come out so cool! Cool guy you are bruddah!
This seems like a $10-15m project, did I miss something where Smoking Tire has a billion viewers?
How much do you think tech company employees will pay per month to securely store their $1m cherished vehicles, given there's no competition in the area?
excellent video Matt! looking forward to the next vid!
You’re just good at explaining stuff and generally interesting to listen to. They need to give you a show on discovery or something.
You look SO happy. Great work Matt. I know it has not been an easy venture.
I love how enthusiastic Matt is about the whole process he's really geeking out
This was AWESOME Matt. Super interesting, can't wait for the rest!
Super cool! I have been waiting for this series!
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing!
Dude this is so impressive!
Absolutely awesome job Matt, having watched you since the beginning it’s so dam cool to see you build this dream project!
Great job !
I honestly needed this. His enthusiasm over his project, especially his concrete, for an audience he cares about makes me happy. Good for you man. We need more people like you, Matt
Congrats Matt. Wishing you much success!
Really awesome stuff Matt!
So pumped for the rest of this series! Thanks for taking us along for the ride, Matt!
This was rad. Excited to see the finished product
Love this interesting detailed building info! Can’t wait for the next one
Love these updates! You can't give us too much information about the exciting project! Some people won't care at all, but those of us who are interested in any details will want all the details!
About to hit one million subs and this sick building in the perfect location. It’s awesome to see the progress. I hope you sell out soon!
man this is awesome!! I can't wait until its fully built to see it
I love it. I can't wait to see it finish
*WOW* can't wait for the next episodes! Well done, Matt!
Lol right while I was typing my question about earthquakes, you answered my question at 16:30. Good to know people will have their special cars in good and safe hands. I know nothing about construction so this was fascinating! Great job Matt and team, best of luck with this amazing project. I'm looking forward to learning more about it.
This place has the structural integrity of the bat cave. Glad to see that the project is going well Matt. This is actually really interesting.
Dude, thanks Matt, this was badass! Looking forward to the next vid, peace!
Great looking project Matt! Wishing you much success on this latest venture!
This is absolutely incredible, really glad you shared this Matt. Best of luck in the new venture!
Awesome man! Congrats!
This is awesome to see. Badass building!
very cool and all the best for this venture
Quality video with a lot of good information, looking forward to part 2.
Thats freaking awesome.. definitely something I would want to do if I had the means to do it. love the ideas you have of the backlighting and everything else. I cannot wait to see the final product. will be awesome to see. cheers toyou sir.
I actually found this very interesting. It combines my passion for cars, and generally anything associated with them, with my background in engineering and curiosity for how things work. I also love Matt's enthusiasm for it all and genuinely believe he knows all this shit and is excited about it and didn't just memorize some stats for the sake of this very sneaky but cool and effective advertising video for his upcoming garage business. :) I can't wait to see the finished project! Good luck with it all Matt.
I love cars and your videos of cars but this is my favorite video you have done.
Everything you explained and the reasons why you needed to do your decisions, love love love it.
Congratulations, beautiful project.
Wow well done Matt! I wish you the best of luck
Yeeeesss I’ve been waiting for this series.
Congrats, Matt! Hope this is successful. Seems like a super obvious good idea
Super cool loved this!
Congratulations man! Very cool setup.
Wow that’s really cool Matt, Congratulations
this was super interesting; I hope you do well on it, Matt
It is great to see the passion you have for this building. Your knowledge and enthusiasm for all of the building processes really show just how much this garage means to you, not just from a monetary standpoint, but from and emotional standpoint.I can't wait to see it finished!
Cool vid! Looking forwards to this series :)
WOW! Congrats Matt! I hope that this is a great investment for you! Lots of hard work & thank you for sharing this with us!! Looks great man!!! Can't wait to see it finished!!

Excellent and interesting tour!
Coming along nicely Matt. I can’t wait to see the end result.
Fantastic! Congratulations on the new venture- very clever and many people will be appreciative
Can't wait to see it finish.
I can’t wait to see this thing done
Nice! The project seems really well done, and it's a quite interesting concept, hope it'll do great!
Very cool and informative. Thank you for the update.
I love your passion you have for this construction work. Awesome stuff - looking forward to the next videos.
Yess. Ever since Larry’s video i’ve been hoping you’d do this! Sweeet!
This video is so dope, love all the details! 👏👏👏
