Vintage Cinema Lens Set for $1000!

- Check out my Vintage set of Canon FD lenses that I purchased for less than the cost of a single modern photography lens! Canon K-35 Lenses are highly sought after in the world of cinema, but are some of the most expensive lenses you can buy. However, the vintage Canon FD lenses from the late 70's through the 80's were the predecessors to the K-35's and are almost indistinguishable in terms of picture quality for a tiny fraction of the price!
What camera did you use for this video. Your channel is criminally undersubscribed
Thank you so much! All footage was filmed with the Sony A7IV.
Fun presentation! However, the title may be misleading. A "true" K35 replica set is made up of the SSC aspherical lenses from the Canon FD line up.
If you're not pressed for having a more complete set of these lenses to be identical, then you can save a lot of money. If you want more information on lenses that come closer and what to keep an eye for, head over to The Media Division for their K35/ Canon FD line up!
I knew they were there, but your presentation and acting were marvelous. Congrats! Great job!
Thank You!
Great explanation and examples! I'm starting to experiment with vintage lenses and look forward to seeing more how-to videos, especially the LIDAR focus, as shooting manual focus handheld is one of my biggest challenges with vintage.
I love the look of vintage lenses over modern. So much character. I’m very anxious to get the LiDAR range finder. Can’t wait to have the look AND the autofocus. Agreed. Moving while trying to focus and nail composition is extremely difficult. Hope to have that video up soon when I get the goods!
Hey there found your video and just decided to collect my own fd lenses to create a cinema collection. Do you have a list of the process or maybe if you used the ndf or fd. I know I see fd but on eBay sometimes I see fd ndf 28mm for example. So I’m curious if your using breech lock or bayonet lock. Thank you
Mind sharing the list of components? I have FD 50mm and 24mm. Also the Helios 44-2 58mm.
Tiny inaccuracy here: Technically, K95 were exclusively taken from the Canon FD asperical, as you said, but you didn't use or show a single aspherical lens. Those go for at least 1000€ each. The non-aspherical lenses you used that are abundant on the market are really close though and no one can really tell the visual difference.
So, great video. My FDs and I are really enjoyed dissecting your lighting and framing. Splendid work.
Thank you for the correction.
More like $10,000 for each of the 3 aspherical unicorns
Yea I've seen sets of these go for as high as 45-50k

I feel like he states he has the fd’s when I herd it. He did mention the aspherical before that. I think he did pretty well in getting out all the information and creating a short as well. lol
My FD lenses and I watch on in-approval.
Yay! Thank you!
The only problem I have with those lenses is the flange distance. My bmpcc6k has an ef mount with a LONGER flange distance than fd, you have to mod the lenses, which is expensive (195$ per lens for a QUALITY mount and not a plastic one) AND you have to be good at taking the whole back element of the lens off.
Too much hustle for me... for now, the sigma 18-35 and canon ef50mm 1.8 stm have to hold up... maybe a mist filter will do in achieving some of the qualities of those older lenses...
What did you use to mount the lenses to the camera? I have an ef mount and have been looking at Simmod’s
Fotasy FD to E mount
Since there are different canon fd lens which ones did you get?
Canon NFDs:
20mm f/2.8
24mm f/2.8
35mm f/2
50mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.8
100mm f/2
where did you find the cage with the circular hole in the foam ?
Not sure what you mean? Can you be more specific?
Sorry man but I have a question... Did you shoot the your footage on 50 fps? Because the look is too filmic and cinematic but the feel is more like TV... I do apologise in advance if I am wrong...
Shot at 30fps, so not precisely cinema accurate. Should have been 24fps.
Is it possible to adapt these to a Pl mount camera?
I don’t see why not. There are CANON FD to PL mount adapters.
Totally awesome, love it! What is the magnetic filter holder system you mentioned. I need that!
Xume magnetic lens adapters.
So did you use the step up rings then the magnetic filter holder or what?
1000$? Maybe in 2012 but most countries have shipping costs and taxes. A complete sorted set with appropriate filter rings and case and caps is more like 3-4000$ if you want the good ones with no fungus or scratches. I gave about this much for Zeiss Jena, one lens I had to order two times because the condition didn’t meet description.
To get all the bells and whistles would be a bit over $1000. But you can still get them cheap and in great condition
Wow, this is awesome. Great tip! Sub’d!
Thanks, Mike!
Pretty sick dude!!!!
Hey thanks!
Great breakdown of how you kitted out your lenses! Certainly got me thinking 😁
Thank you, Sir!
Nice video! Which adapter(s) are you using? :)

What is your lens set combination? MMs and Fs
20mm f/2.8
24mm f/2.8
35mm f/2
50mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.8
100mm f/2
@@PopartFilms Thanks a lot
this makes me haps!
Thanks! Your comment makes ME haps!
great explanation and infos, thx a lot !! (but next time would be nice if you go outside and film some beautiful outdoor footage ... )
Thanks! I’ll do my best to get some juicy nature footage next time!
Funny story, my photography (and later video) story began with a Canon AE-1 at the age of 16. That's 32 years ago. The two lenses for that camera, and I still have both the camera and the lenses, that I got with that camera back then are the 28mm F/2.8 S.C. FD and the 50mm F/1.4 S.C.C. FD. Guess, I'm going on a hunt for all the other stuff :)
Finding the rest is actually pretty easy on Ebay! I LOVE the 50mm F1/4 FD. It's the perfect all around lens for my set up.
@@PopartFilms The ones that are getting on the pricier side are the 100mm F/2 and 20mm F/2.8. The other ones are fairly reasonable. And I may or may not have a 55mm F/1.2 on my watch list now.
@@EmeraldAudiovisual it’s so addictive!
Stop it! Too good! No more!
Thanks for the compliment!
Los lentes Canon tienen bastante viñeta.
What size rollerblades do you wear?
Bigger than yours.
can i just rent your kit?
Ha! Unfortunately, I use it too often for my own work.
can I just buy your kit? @@PopartFilms
but the fd 20mm is like 1300 on its own
The prices for some of the lenses has risen significantly since releasing this video. There are still cheap options out there on ebay.
Will you be willing to sell the lens set?
No. I use this lens set all the time.
Wait, there's a 4th Season of Stranger Things?
The Batman was custom tuned modern lenses..

@@PopartFilms yeah dude the Ironglass rehoused Helios was used for a couple car mount shots on the film. The rest of the film was shot with custom tuned modern Arri Alfa anamorphics.
@@DanielTroyer Yes, I know that. However, vintage lenses WERE used in the making of the film and the detuning that they did for those modern lenses essentially made them look more like vintage lenses.
so... why you not compare some shots with NON-cinema lenses? cos your location was right setuped, light, colorgraded and so one... ofc it will look nice) and think it will be nice on other 2020 year auto-lenses too, cos its setuped shot and light. Nothing can make it looks bad)))
Nice job doofus
Uh...thanks?
Are You a native American?
Supposedly, I have Cherokee about 4 generations back...so not really.
