@11:13 that shot was really making me think the 7Artisans was WAY too soft, bordering on just blurry and crappy, but when I look at the floor to judge the focal plane, it looks like an incredibly narrow focal plane and it looks like it is actually slightly in front of batman, so now I'm not sure what to think. There is no way the 7Artisans is as blurry as it appears here, or everyone would call it garbage.

Honestly, using these budget anamorphics on a camera that doesn’t shoot open gate, is the very definition of wasting money. Do people seriously care about a few lens flares and some oval bokeh? You’re going to be cropping in on your sensor because you got an anamorphic lense…

    • @a7d3nmedia

82mm threads vs 67mm implies a massively higher total cost of ownership if you're heavy into filters. Sirui wins hands down IMHO. The consistency of exposure and sharpness is no contest. These will sell out FAST.

Thanks Jason, I just ordered a set of the Sirui. I had been mulling over the 7 Artisans set but after seeing Jason's results, the Siruis look more practical for me, I don't want too much "character", some of that can be added in post. I've never been a fan of diffusion filters either, went down the Black Promist road early in my career and never going back to that affected look, especially for documentary. 67mm filters are a bonus as I already have a full set of NDs in that size.

The shift in color casting is the main issue with budget cine lenses, since the coatings are never consistent between each lens. It's unfortunate that this ends up being one of the main reasons that lenses with consistent coating retail for much much higher prices, but I guess that process of creating consistent coating is quite costly for the lens manufacturer. Nice review comparison btw!

If you read somes many DOP, you will read many times same story : "across all the holywood_brand_of_your_choice line-up lenses, we use just 2 or 3 of theses on this feature, because we need good match about vignetting/contrast/sensation/colors...etc etc" . If you want really perfect match between each shots : use only one lense, my friend. Don't thinks money is the limit. because money absolutely don't give what you think. 😘

i have the vision lenses set for my fuji and I have to say the look is really good. I have a 1/4 promist on all of them and actually don't mind the character of the lenses. The only issue is the weight as most cine lenses are quite heavy as these are. Id however comfortably use them to shoot anything at t2 and if I need some more light and character open up to 1.05. if you wish to have no character you just use the 35 wide open and the rest at t2. the 12mm is also great but at t2.9.

One thing to note is that the 7artisans is for full frame and can be used for APS-C but and these nightwalkers are for APS-C only. Shooting full frame will provide better image quality due to the bigger size of a full-sensor camera versus an APS-C sensor. And the full frame Venus and Saturn are too expensive for me. Because of that I prefer the 7artisans.

I'm in doubt between this kit from 7Artisans (12, 25, 35 and 50mm) and the kit from Meike S35 Prime (18, 25, 50 and 75). The Meike kit is more expensive, but seems to be better at focusing ventilation. And maybe in terms of clarity, I don't know. "annoyingly amounts of grain is shadows with FX30". I'm guessing you are filming in LOG? If you read up about LOG footage, most of the information is in the highlights and there is exponentially less information in the shadows. What most people do is expose 1.25-1.75 stops brighter (obviously making sure the bright areas that you want information on do not clip) and then you crush it down in post. This should give you much more information in the shadows and avoid all the noise. Do a google search about exposing Sony Log2 or Log3 footage and you should find lots on info on this.

T1.5 or T-stop is almost the same as f-stop. The difference as far as I understand it is that the T-stop measures the amount of light hitting the sensor (or film roll) and f-stop measures the amount of light going through the lens. This sound like it would be the same amount and most often the T-stop and the f-stop are very similar. So to make things easier just think of it as f-stop but with tad more light.

I think the other two people answered this, but just to clarify. My understanding is that F-Stop is a calculated amount of light going through a lens based on size of lens, number and size of elements and I'm guessing distance. (So, a mathematical way of calculating how much light should go through the lens). A T-Stop is a measured amount of light when hitting the sensor. Therefore, the F-stop varies from lens to lens where as a T-Stop should be identical no matter which lens or manufacturer you are using. (in theory as there may be different methods of measurement or uncalibrated measuring devices)

I personally think the 7 artisans isnt worth an additional $500 bucks especially if the t stops arent fully accurate and the softeness one then when atopped down is pretty much unsuable

No, these are designed for mirrorless cameras so they cant go to the longer EF mount flange distance.
