Experienced forager here - can definitely confirm those are 'Angel Wings' (Pleurocybella porrigens). Lots of deaths from these in Japan over years of steady consumption - kidney failure and brain lesions. Strangely enough it used to be considered a "fantastic edible" until the deaths associated with it popped up. Best way to tell the difference from these and Oysters is Angel Wings will only grow on soft/conferous wood, whereas Oysters are always hardwood. Note the colour also as Angel Wings are always moonlit white, whereas Oysters are beige/tan/grey. Happy foraging!

Feeling a connection to the land is the best head-space to be in, it's value cannot be over emphasised. Unfortunately so many of us live disconnected from the natural world floundering around surrounded by concrete and glass. I know that although you (Callum & Rox) live in nature with all its raw power you still love and appreciate it. Myself and Hannah met you (Callum) in August at The Distillery and had a great chat with you about some of your life in Ardnamurchan. We will be returning next year again to recharge our batteries. In the mean time please know that for us poor dwellers on the threshold your videos help to remind us of the most important things in life, that they are simple and mostly free yet not without toil and some hardship...always rewarding and worthwhile. Love out to you both.

Very real as it relates to every day life..I am not keen on the inverness accent, All be it that I am a local to the area.. but both of your accents and personalities compliment each other in a very unique way that is a pleasure to listen to ..The content was very good indeed ..Thank you both ...Kindness both of your way..

Have you considered using a cooler bag with a zip top, the kind supermarkets sell, and slinging it outside in winter to keep food chilled, especially sealed foods that won’t attract wildlife?

    • @ardview-vanlife
      @ardview-vanlife  8 дней назад

Yes, that's exactly what we do in the winter. We keep a cool bag in the front of the van and it works pretty well. We now also keep a cool bag inside the van in the summer and just switch over cool blocks every day :) Pain in the bum but it works.

I found that solar panels which can tilt into the direction of the sun will produce way more power then just flat mounted panels.
It could be as spectacular as 5-8 times as much. Even on overcast days a tilting panel can do way better...
I mounted my solar panels on brackets which allow them to be tilted using a couple of aluminium stips and some thumb bolts.
That helped a lot with power generation.
On a side note: a small (300-500W) wind generator can help as well especially when you are parked up in windy spots...

    • @ardview-vanlife
      @ardview-vanlife  11 месяцев назад +1

We did consider possible finding a way to angle the solar panels or getting a wee turbine and if you say it will make a big difference then we will maybe have a look again to see if we can do that 😁 We appreciate the tips.

    • @koningbolo4700
      @koningbolo4700 11 месяцев назад

@@ardview-vanlife I fitted angle brackets to the aluminium frame of the panel. I used a total of 12 of the 90 degree brackets (of which I folded 4 of them flat)
The brackets are mounted using pop rivets. Every corner and in the middle of the long sides has two brackets fitted.
In the corners a 90 degree one and a flattened one are fitted to each other and the frame in the middle of the long side two 90 degree brackets are fitted to each other and the frame.
I used a larger angle bracket and some waterproof plywood blocks to mount the panel to the roof (using M6 blind rivet nuts)
To angle the panel I am testing what to use. For now I use three aluminium angle lengths (about 90 cm each) with several holes drilled into one end (about 7 cm increments) and a single hole in the other end. Mounting the panel using these three pieces is rather finicky, starting with the middle one and securing the panel using the outer two. This works when secured. I use thumb bolts which allow for a more easy way to fix the pieces to the roof bracket and the panel.
In future I am planning a more sophisticated way to angle the panel up. Possibly using gas struts and a single more beefy aluminium angle of box section.
I am building a campervan this year for which build I am keeping up a sort of website/blog on what I am doing. The panel mounting system is on there as well:

@@ardview-vanlife I hear the Chinesium wind turbines are (basically) sheit. They claim to be 300 or even 500 W but barely reach 40-50 W. Which is about what your solar array should be able to do on an overcast day... So not the bother really.
You could do one yourself (lots of work covertinga direct drive washing machine motor and some advanced carpentry (although a chap called Mike from Florida has a 30+ part video tutorial on a 2 feet diameter VAWT which supposedly is rather good, producing 250-350 W in average winds...
I think your first step should be to try a tilting panel option (doing a test setup using some "german engineering" to see how the panels produce more if tilted and how much more...before commiting to a modification...

Hi Guys, love the vids, i move to Port Ellen in 3 weeks so if you fancy meeting up whenever. im going to get a martial arts group going featuring historical sword fighting, whip fighting and some grappling thrown in. Big fan of cold water therapy too and your way of life, just hoping I can get enough of us on Islay to get a regular group with premises . Good luck and keep up your vids ,they have been a big help to me. Perhaps one day our paths will cross.

Callum's deer impression 😆 Our lazy solution for power in the winter is to drive to Spain - but the cosiness of this vlog and your descriptions of winter in the UK almost (almost) tempted us to stick around and find out what it's like. You are so brave with those mushrooms! I wish I could forage for them but I'm too paranoid about poisoning.

Just thought I might pop back in to flesh out my "Dweller on the Threshold" reference. I know it's not cool to like Van Morrison, he has said some ridiculous things of late which are best ignored. However his song "Dweller on the Threshold" does have merit.
I feel in my current life I am on the threshold, between living the life I want to live and the one I feel I must live due to economics, expectations and responsibilities. I watch your vlog and see two young people living a rewarding, fulfilling alternative lifestyle irrespective of the material society we live in. A society which in almost every way channels us into a vortex of consumerism and greed which once commited to is hard to extract from.
So, keep on doing your thing and resist the call beyond the hills, it is you who have your priorities right.
That said I am sure you have times when you doubt yourselves as we all do, nothing is perfect. I have been fortunate to have travelled extensively. My travels have taught me how important the environment we live in is, and just how that environment impacts our moods, well-being and our feeling of worth. I'll stop here because I'm rambling. Here is "Dweller"
I'm a dweller on the threshold
And I'm waiting at the door
And I'm standing in the darkness
I don't want to wait no more
    I have seen without perceiving
    I have been another man
Let me pierce the realm of glamour
So I know just what I am
I'm a dweller on the threshold
And I'm waiting at the door
And I'm standing in the darkness
I don't want to wait no more
Feel the angel of the present
    In the mighty crystal fire
Lift me up, consume my darkness
    Let me travel even higher
I'm a dweller on the threshold
As I cross the burning ground
Let me go down to the water
    Watch the great illusion drown
I'm a dweller on the threshold
And I'm waiting at the door
And I'm standing in the darkness
I don't want to wait no more
I'm gonna turn and face the music
    The music of the spheres
Lift me up, consume my darkness
    When the midnight disappears
I will walk out of the darkness
And I'll walk into the light
And I'll sing the song of ages
And the dawn will end the night
I'm a dweller on the threshold
And I'm waiting at the door
And I'm standing in the darkness
I don't want to wait no more
I'm a dweller on the threshold
And I cross some burning ground
And I'll go down to the water
    Let the great illusion drown
I'm a dweller on the threshold
And I'm waiting at the door
And I'm standing in the darkness
I don't want to wait no more

Thank you so much for your beautiful comments. Replying to this while listening to the Dweller On The Threshold 😍 We are glad that our videos have connected with you in that way. What you say resonates with us very well, we often have to remind ourselves not to take things for granted and appreciate the lives that we have made for ourselves. It can be hard and often seems like things would be easier if we lived in a house but then we could never afford to live in the beautiful places we call home 😍
