  • It's always an interesting challenge to limit yourself in some way, and force yourself to try new ways. With that being said, I never thought I'd limit myself to only using 3xOSC..
    However this gave me a chance to explore Sound design and I cover the basics of it in this video!
    Enjoy!!

      Its funny, but our understanding of the laws of physics actually helped us BUILD an oscillator electronically. It even helped invent the computer you typed the comment with.

    Great video that shows you really can do stuff with minimal setup.
    Tips for beginners:
    Hardest part of making any kind of music is not the tools and how many you use, but the creativeness and ideas. More you learn about new tools can give you ideas, but truth is you will get much better at your craft when the starting tools you have are simple because then it is your creativeness that is getting the most training.
    Basic guideline to follow:
    1.Start simple and with basic tools. Work on your ideas and creativeness.
    2. Only bring some new gear after you've learned and exhausted everything from previous gear. So basically you have to learn your tools before knowing what you really need or what is missing from your setup.
    3. Keep this in mind and profit in the long run.

    • @PERTEKofficial
      @PERTEKofficial 5 лет назад +73

      LPT: try challenging yourself to make music with stock plugins. I did a similar thing to this video where I used 3xOsc to create a clubby track a couple years ago and that taught me a ton about designing sounds using oscillators and effects. It wasn't a super amazing track by any means, but that made it relatively easy to pick up on Serum and design really cool sounds.
      3xOsc and Serum aren't really all that functionally different; Serum is kind of like a 2xOsc (or 4xOsc if you're counting the sub and noise oscillators?) with a built-in FX chain and a lot more automation capability. Basically, if you spend a little time in 3xOsc and design some cool sounds with that, those skills can translate to Serum, which both makes it easier to use and allows you to design WAY cooler sounds.
      LPT2: if you're having a difficult time creating a track, try putting something together with a ROMpler (like Nexus2, for example) where there's very minimal sound design involved. Yeah, the track probably won't come out sounding *exactly* how you want, and the sound selection might not always be super amazing, but that's okay. The focus here is to just simply make some melodies and arrange them into a track, and just let your creativity flow. Once you've finished a few tracks, pick out one or two that you like, and start replacing the premade sounds from Nexus2 (or whatever you may have used) and design your own sounds to be played instead. That can make it easier to take a track that sounds musically good but bland in sound selection to a song that sounds great musically and has great sound selection.
      Edit: You don't need to use a ROMpler actually, you can also download a preset pack or two for Serum and use those to create the music, and then go back and design your own sounds to replace the presets.
      Hope this helps anyone who reads this! Try to avoid what I've been doing for the past year or so, don't do sound design and musical composition at the same time (unless that really works for you) at least in my experience, that usually leads to making a neat melody and then spending hours meticulously designing a sound for it, and then forgetting the idea I had. In other words, doing both at the same time might just take you too far away from composing to finish a track.

    Very interesting and informative video! On a point of interest, the way you described the head blocking out high frequencies but not low ones is wrong. You said that high frequencies carry low energy and are thus blocked, and low frequencies carry high energy which are thus able to pass through.
    The correct explanation is: As sound passes through a medium that isn't a perfect vacuum, heat energy is dissipated into the medium. The heat energy is transferred by the friction the sound waves make by vibrating the molecules they pass through (that's where resonant frequencies come into play). This loss of energy through friction and then heat is what causes attenuation of sound waves. Higher frequency sound waves cause faster vibrations, and therefore lose energy faster than lower frequencies and have less penetrating capacity before attenuating.
    The difference in our explanations is that you are confusing frequency with amplitude. The amplitude of transverse sound waves (the ones you are illustrating here) account for pitch while rarefaction in longitudinal sound waves account for the energy they carry (expressed in volume, dB).

    • @afridnishad6617
      @afridnishad6617 4 года назад

    I mean 3x osc is just an analog synth plugin, I wouldn't exactly say this is a challenge considering how people have been using these since the birth of electronic music. The only reason people find plugins like these so difficult to use is just based off of the lack of knowledge in primitive sound design, so stating that using an analog synth is a limit to you, well, it kinda shows off how much you actually know about your craft.

    3 osc is the most powerful thing i have ever used. This guy knows whats up, I use it for everything tbh. Figured years ago that if i mastered 3 osc that because it can literally do just about anything any other VST does, Harmor/Massive/Sylenth/Sytrus/ etc.... i dont have to drop the several grand to get them all (eventually i did buy them all, and i still use 3 osc because its more malleable to my personal creative flow) Any sound you can make in any of the above, I can make with 3 osc, now automating how that happens is different for that other plugins are used, for instance to sidechain something in sytrus/harmor is just a click of a button in the vst, but with 3 osc you would need to sidechain it yourself or use another plugin to cause the automation. Either way those Other plugins to support 3 osc are all native plugins on fl studio so yah, 3 osc ftw

    Not gonna lie, I ended up clicking on this following the exact same algorithm you described at the beginning. 😅Your intro had me grinning from ear to ear - absolutely brilliant! 👍 And thank you so, so much for the short and simple "PhD explanation" of how oscillators work. Loved your final result, very inspiring! :)

    Physics are actually a great way to understand certain things. For ex. The downsampling distortion method, in physics it's quite interesting and you go from "downsampling makes everything more 8bit" to "downsampling is sampling a frequency, deleting some of the samples and then add them back together"
