What's up guys,
back with another tutorial exploring the realm of chords. A pretty chaotic topic honestly so that's why were doing this simple and easy - through Einstein Equation chords. Could not have been better.
This is a highly requested video so I thought I would give it a go!
Enjoy!
IMPORTANT:
This video has some mistakes that slipped in during the editing, can you spot them? If not, all of them are pointed out in the comment section. I'd recommend you to Google and explore why they're wrong and learn something. It's really interesting!

a great point. simplicity is key
I personally think Level 2 is right at the sweet spot while level 3 is already overdone a bit
Level 1: Major/Minor Chords
Level 2: Major/Minor 7th Chords
Level 3: Major/Minor 7th / 9th / sus2 / sus4 / Passing Chords
Level 4: *Mix and Match all three levels.* The points don't matter and the rules are all made up!
Genuinely surprised to see so many people thinking one of these levels is better than the other. You should be using chords from all three levels! Sometimes a solid minor or major triad is exactly what a song calls for followed by a more dynamic sus2 or add9. Mix and match!
I think that's why most people are complaining because there isn't always a need to be as complex as the third
One of my favorite channels, surprised to see you here! Haha
When I started producing I remember not knowing chords, and just making everything based on sounds. When I then listened some old tracks, I realised all of them were in proper chords, it just took me ages to find out, because I had to keep trying and changing notes. When I learned chords, the process of making tracks got sped up by like x5. This video is perfect for beginners.
same thing for me
Me too
I can relate this so much!
Lol yeah. Those suspended chords are the real shit tho
How to produce better:
1. Stop producing.
2. learn music theory
3. produce again
it could definitely help, but we can't forget about all the great musicians that didn't know music theory
MYZ there aren’t many of those
Googahgee i feel like there’s more on a smaller level than you think. None of my friends know theory but we still can hear what’s right and what’s wrong. I like to think I’m a decent producer that doesn’t know theory. check me out and i know you’ll agree that my beats follow theory “rules”
“Rules” for lack of a better word
That's why I only do trap beats :)
Honestly, level 2 sounded much better than level 3.
I feel like level 2 sounds better in isolation, but in the context of the song itself 3 sounds way better
@@1gnore_me. True. More complex doesn't necessarily mean better.

Yeah, I agree. It sounds unnatural and it gives me stress, whereas the 2nd level is calm but interesting.
But don't paintings look better when they have the maximum amount of colors possible?
@@ryanrose2863 Initially, I agreed with you there, but I think it brings up a much bigger debate. Some of my all time favorite paintings are extremely simplistic. Sometimes the silence says more than the noise. Anyway, if Level 3 removed the 2nd quick-transition chord, I'd certainly deem it the best out of the three. Otherwise, Level 2 takes the cake for me.

Incorrect or misleading information in this video (with fun time markers!):
1:21 - A chord consists of at least THREE notes, not two as stated in the video. Only 2 different notes is an interval or a double stop.
2:34 - The chord progression is actually Cmin AbMaj EbMaj Bbmaj, not Major minor minor Major as shown in the video
2:42 - True, these are diatonic chords, but how/why they are diatonic is not explained. Diatonic means that all the notes used in a melody/chord progression are in the key that the song is in. For example, if you’re in the key of C major (all the white keys on a piano) and you play ONLY the white keys, you’re playing something that is *diatonic* to the key of C.
4:50 - When we write out keys, we ideally want to use every letter name once (A-G). This is true for all the standard keys we find in the circle of 5ths. That said, the key of C minor (used here) has an Ab and not a G#, as shown in the video.
If it DID have a G#, there’d be a G and a G# in the same key, which would be super confusing, especially when written in standard notation.
4:55 - Same thing as just noted above - D# should be Eb.
The key of C minor is C D Eb F G Ab Bb (each note name is utilized)
*NOT* C D D# F G G# A# (note names doubled up and thus way more confusing. And where’s B?)
Also, side note, these are all still *Diatonic Chords*
7:39 - Gm7/D# - Oof
Gm7 is G Bb D F and then over D# -- see how this gets confusing when you have a D AND a D#?
It would be better to call it an Eb, which would make it an EbM9 chord
Nice editing, though!

Bro you make one of the funniest tutorials on internet without uttering a single word! A true artist indeed!
he said "coming down the stars..."
as someone who already understands music theory, this video gave me an aneurysm
Java why is that?
@@bekakokoladze7594 1) a chord consists of at least 3 notes, 2 notes is an interval
2) at 2:34 literally every chord except for the last one is named incorrectly
3) the way he describes diatonic triads at 2:39 is extremely misleading, you can use diatonic triads that aren't just those 4 chords. saying "avoid diatonic triads at any cost" is an absurd statement as well, since "diatonic triads" just refers to the native chords in a key.
4) he mixes up enharmonic spelling of notes quite a bit, for example at 4:48 the G# should be called Ab. calling it G# can make it extremely confusing for people who then go on to study music theory using sheet music and not FL studio. the D# should also be called an Eb
5) at 7:37 he starts building a Gm7 chord, but when he plays it it becomes a G7 chord
6) it's clear that at level 3 even he doesn't know what he's doing, the voice leading is all over the place which is probably the main reason people are saying it sounds bad, that on top of the fact that it looks like he's just adding random extensions with little thought put into it at all
and that's just the stuff i picked up in one run through. this video is VERY misleading and if a beginner takes it to heart it's probably going to give them a very flawed foundation for music theory

This video is extremely helpful. I will admit that I have been producing for almost “10 years” and have been the most hard headed person about it. I peaked in 2014 because I stopped learning. Never learned chord progression, proper music theory, mixing etc. To people just getting started, don’t make this same mistake. Don’t try to be self taught. I wasted a lot of time and now I feel like I’m starting over from scratch.

Hi From France
I prefered the level 2 for the verse and level 3 for the drop
Level 3 sounded really cool in the drop and made me think of a Brooks kind of song. In the verse I prefer Level 2 though. Just sounds better to the ear in my opinion. Level 3 gives me anxiety.
Dude I love your video editing😂😂
Hi from France too, and I prefer the 2nd version
level 3 sounds cool, but a bit complicated for this genre of edm, especially that dominant seventh in the middle of pattern. i think future house like this sounds better when it more straight forward. but its a matter of taste🤷🏻♂️
Tru Lulu u damn right, i am exactly him
You’re not wrong. It’s a great example for adding more color to a progression but I doubt anyone would settle with it as a final result. I wouldn’t say too complicated. It’s just clashing with the melody.
Yes, I also did not like the third level in this demo track
Rowdy Rudy Jr i do not say its TOO complicated, its just might sound unexpectable for “mass” ears, if you get what i mean
@@heavyrush7635 Well, the point is to learn music theory to people, not to make the best EDM track :)

The problem here is how he applied the concept. It wasn't applied very well
this is actually very well said. its very hard explaining music theory to ppl who dont know how to even begin to fathom
When words fail, video editing works. Really man I've watched a lot of tutorials where guys go on speaking gibberish and I understood nothing. Until you uploaded this. Thanks a lot Vories ❤
Needlessly confusing using those sharps instead of flats. I don't think I've ever seen anyone represent a minor chord as a sharp 2nd rather than a flat 3rd.
Hint: when people mix up sharps and flats, that's the biggest sign that their knowledge is far more limited than they believe.
(I say that from personal experience...)
You should easily be able to interchange the two (sharp 2nd - flat 3rd) especially if you start dealing with quartertones.
@@samuelwhite3173 I think this sort of video that is trying to educate people should do it's best not to confuse people by using non standard terms and concepts.Yes, I know what he's talking about, but there's plenty of people that are now very confused because everywhere else is telling them about flat 3rds in minor chords.
Lol he lost credibility when the first progression simultaneously had Ab and A# chords.
But 2 seconds later he notated it as a Bb chord? Lol
@@samuelwhite3173 If you're using quartertones then that's even more reason to stick to standards and not mix up sharp 2nds and flat 3rds. There is no good reason to call a minor 3rd a sharp 2nd. If you do that what is your 2nd note?
You explained the placement of the chords and the different spacing between minor and major in the beginning, way better than any other video on youtube. Normally they confuse me and I get frustrated but this was super helpful so thanks mate!

2 notes are not a chord, but an interval, a chord is made of 3 notes or more
Right? why is not everyone talking about that? haha
Because this is a detail for a lot of people, but important for an other part too, it's knowledge
Interval is a "distance" between two notes. 2 notes indeed can form chords, like 1-5-1 (80% of music with electric distorted guitars use it notoriously)
@@patryknarbut he didn't use it/say it on this sense but yes
@@patryknarbut traditionally, you need 3 notes to make a chord. Two notes is called a dyad. Power Chords, (the 1-5-1) thing you're talking about are a relatively new thing, and are only sometimes called chords when there are other harmonics introduced from the distortion associated with electric guitar (where the term Power Chord originated). What's the name of a C-G-C chord? ;)
Bro, everything’s ok, but many of the # should have been b instead
Just to name the chords correctly
Fm is made of F, Ab, C. Even though the G# sounds the same, the theory makes it an Ab
yes, I almost died watching the A# in the chord progression

Diego Martinez literally got on exam on this on thursday
Yeah I think this guy is furthering a stereotype of "producers don't know shit about theory." It feels like this video is trying to come up with a "formula" for making music without knowing how music actually works.
I'm no master composer myself, but I at least know that FG#C isn't a chord. This is why I think it's way better to use actual musical notation to write music, and maybe have a keyboard on hand if possible.
@@giygas7392 "how music works"? lol, music works with differnet notes, put together. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. So, if he wants to call it "FG#C, he can do it. If it's right in the classical way, then we can discuss, but this video is for producers in a DAW, and not sheet music.
Level 2 performs best with the singing of the melody, while level 3 performs best with the synth playing the melody
You get it
Which is why lvl 2 wins because there’s lyrics.
This is easily the single most helpful thing I have ever seen regarding music theory and chords.

Great video man! Explanation is really good and the video is very funny to watch. Also very inspirational, since it gives you ideas on how to build your own patterns for colourful chords. Thx again maaaaaan!!!
Am I the only one who didnt like the level 3 chords?
No, you're not. The harmony is stilted and the voice leading is awful. But what to expect from someone who get enharmonics wrong?
Secondary dominants and basic reharmonization are such useful tools to have though. The progression kinda went overboard but when used correctly they make a huge difference in making a basic progression sound interesting.
ya 2 is the best
The lvl 3 chords sounded kinda busy, especially compared to the melody. I got the idea, but that implementation of it didn't vibe with me.
Yes
Question: Do you plan to release your vocals for remixing? I love your voice man!
Even After 4 years as a producer I'm watching this video, not because I want to know Chords, but because this song made out of some nonsense lyrics, just sound SOOOO GOOOD in my ears
Personally, starting with level 2 is a great way to lift off with a track but expanding towards the level 3 state with a level 2 and 1 final bars would be something I would try.
I'm surprised, you made a video on chords and didn't cover chord resolution.
Cause he probably learnt harmony 3 days ago just to sell midi packs lol
I'm only half way through so I dunno if this is noted, but while making chords when there are other things playing, it's important to make sure the different instruments don't clash with each other, for instance, you wouldn't want the vocals creating a minor second with one of the chords because that would sound horrible and be something you want to avoid unless you're writing mathcore.
Also, when writing progressions using complex chords, it's important to be mindful of the melody that's created by the chord progression, sometimes intervals (particularly thirds and fifths) can override the sense of melody from the root and throw off what you're trying to do, you can usually sort this out by using an inversion of the chord.
oh god, i want this full track
