Man!!! I think this is the video I've been looking for. I will definitely do this. I have a short on my jeep and its been driving me insane cuz it comes and goes
Thank you for a very nice clear and concise explanation about finding a electrical short. Your video reminded me of my Dad tracing a electrical problem in our house - he only used his old handy electrician's tool - a light bulb with a positive and negative lead. Yes, he was a Master Electrician and much more with a career in the Army Combat Engineers and Air Defense Artillery. The intellectual uppity-up Gulf Power Electrical Engineers and Linesmen were in disbelief when my Father told them our house has a "180 phase-shift"! I agree with you "don't always listen to the negative naysayers about most anything in life". Sometimes your Father or other family member does indeed know more about a subject than the alleged "Industry professionals". I wish I have my Father's electrical knowledge. I thought I have a battery that isn't living up to its specification - eighty-five-(85) months. In January 21, 2012, I purchased the Interstate battery (34/78DT - Mega Tron Plus), it has a 85-month life warranty rating - that is 7 years and one month. I am not sure if I have a battery problem or other "electrical gremlin" issue. I drive a 2005 GMC Sierra VHO 6.0L Performance Edition. In my amateur attempt to troubleshoot I learned more than I thought I could learn about auto electrical systems: I wonder if I replace the Breaker, Circuit - GM (12077863) [approximately $10.00 to $20.00 from either GM Parts net or Sears] if it will resolve my driver's power seat? The switch is in a state of unreliability because if I attempt to move the seat forward the seat will move backwards and vice-versa. I pulled the circuit breaker and after about a minute, I reinserted the circuit breaker and the seat functioned properly, but a few days later when I needed to move the seat backwards it moved forward. I have also read that it could be a faulty control switch in the seat, which costs $92.00 + at most local auto parts stores. In summary, I am trying to solve the power seat problem at the lowest cost due to major financial constraints!
if disconnecting the battery screws up your computer or codes, I guess you never want to have to replace your battery. it sounds like a friend told a friend who told a friend , and none of the friends have any idea what they are talking about. better not have to go buy another battery for your car if the old one is shot, you will screw up your car. these comments have no common sense. and you know what else the dealerships don't tell you, because they want your money. to clear your stupid codes after repairing your car or truck. you simply take off the positive, or neg cable and count to 30. then replace them. ( ever reset your computer at your desk) you power it down, and power it up. disconnecting the juice to it, and re connecting. so I say to all of you that repeat things you hear, try it for your self so you don't sound stupid. thank you for correcting the spelling. your awesome, awesome.
Disconnecting the battery can only cause three mildly annoying things- 1) The ECM/PCM will need to relearn a drive cycle, and may run rough for a few miles, 2) You may lose any stored fault codes- if you're chasing a problem, 3) You will lose radio and other Personal Presets (seat & mirror positions if vehicle has that).

Man this video right here is the answer to my prayers who knew I’d have to hear the same shit 1000 different ways before I finally heard it taught the right way. Thank you
Great video but i think this information is mostly accurate for older vehicles. Newer vehicles typically would have some current draw at all times (50 milliamps is the universal spec i believe) for various computer modules like the anti-theft, wireless key lock reciever module, just to name a few.
your right, but if that is the case i find that amount of a draw and simple subtract it from the amount i have thus knowing the amount of the problem. in which case i would use a multimeter. but a simple test light will get you in the right direction.
I hate when my wife says "Great Job" to me. I feel she has a cookie or some candy in her back pocket ready for me. I wont turn it down though, lol. But seriously, great job my friend. I always tell my friends to start with the simple, less expensive stuff first, then I tell them to find somebody else to look at it, I'm busy .Lol

Subscribed! My car kept burning my ignition coil fuse and would not let the car start!! I learned your method and it turns out the dome lights inside the car were causing all of this. My car is running now!!! A+
Precise and to the point. Love it. Quick question tho, so why did leaving the headlights switch on like in your case make the test light come on ? And when you said to make sure to switch everything off does that include not putting the key in the ON position ?
westin, no i think you misunderstood/ im sorry , if the light doesnt go off, then thats not the problem. that fuse would be good. if you pulled a relay and the light went off then the problem lies in that circut. maybe a bad relay, but most of the time it would be a short on that relay wire. ( connection ) i would start under the fuse panel where the wire for that relay or fuse is connected. im sorry about the misunderstanding, and thank you forn your comment.
Hello, my Malibú Chevrolet 2000 always burn the fuse of the cooling fan ground, I remplace it and after a while it burn again. None of the two fans work when this happens, you think it might be a short ? Thank you.

Any help with this will be appreciated. ( you think my compressor clutch is drawing too much power?)
Jeremy Castillo actually you are incorrect. this will work for them as well. that small amount of power you are talking about is still current, and voltage. this current and voltage levels will still change short or no short. but thank you for your comment.
@@thomasbriansavingmoney Dear thomas, Your video looks so great just want ask something After attaching My android headunit was only sleeping my battery died after 2 wks, is this possible? Also is your method work on 2019 modern cars??? Thanks
Awesome video I am old school and I knew there was a way to check this very simple I just forgot I went through several videos looking at people doing unnecessary stuff thanks for your help
I think the book term is "parasitic draw". A "parasitic draw or load" is current flowing when the car is off and draining the battery voltage. The cause of this drainage could be a short circuit somewhere in the car. This video shows a very solid diagnostic technique for narrowing down the location. In my experience, I usually find shorts to ground (fuse popping shorts) where wires bend repeatedly. Door hinges. Often on overhead sun visors, when there is a mirror and lamp in the visor.
Derrick Moyer if everything is off then it is a short. If you left something on it is a draw. A parasitic draw is a short none the less. Not a dead short which is diffrent
Not necessarily a short. To differentiate, use a DMM and measure across the test light to see what voltage it reads. If it reads full battery voltage then you indeed have a short. If it's less, you can use an ammeter with a 10 A range to determine what the draw is. If it's in the range of 250mA it may be something like a relay coil staying on. An amp or more may be a light bulb, etc. Knowing the exact amount helps so you can narrow down what you'd be looking for, whether a direct wire short or something staying on.
I've been going round and round with this 2006 Cadillac DTS and you're the man I haven't worked on it yet my wife's driving at work but I guarantee I'm going to fix the problem with what you just taught me
My Ignition Fuse keeps popping. If the battery cables are both hooked up, it'll blow. The starter/relay is brand new and I can't visually find any metal on metal or rubbed wires. Although there are spots I can't see without taking paneling off and whatnot.
itsounds just like a fuse, however a bad ground would do the same. its not several problems because all those are on the same circut. is this a chevy pickup because if it has a tow pakage i would check the connection up under the rear end close to the licence plate. theres aplug there when they install the tow package it like to get dierty or caught up on things.
its prob wiring to it, i would make sure its not clogged in the valve cover as well. the foam likes to stick there. but my first guess is wiring is touching ground.

Thank you so much, simple, easy explanation at last!
Much appreciated huge help and a lesson in electronics and common sense!
perfect mechanic, i loves your super persentation , you did it in a professional way. . . i never seen a perfcet presentation ever before , do more do not stop. . .
This has to be the best thing I've ever learned on RUclips
I know this is over 10 yrs old but THANK GOD for this. I needed it 😂🙂
Man this video right here is the answer to my prayers who knew I’d have to hear the same shit 1000 different ways before I finally heard it taught the right way. Thank you
Great video but i think this information is mostly accurate for older vehicles.
This was the question I was thinking of.
Thank you for asking it and thank you @@thomasbriansavingmoney for the clear answer.
i used a test light and found the short thank you.
awesome, thanks for watching.
Robert Mccaffrey is stuffed
@@thomasbriansavingmoney does it matter if the ignition is on or off when you do this test?
@@villain2hero727 Ignition off
@@villain2hero727 yes , off.
Wow, thanks a million. Finally, an electrical video I understand and can do because you demonstrate everything and aren't assuming we know how to do something. THANKS!
THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST VIDEOS I'VE EVER SEEN! 👏🏻 THIS HELPED ME FIND A SHORT ON MY 2011 MAZDA 2 THAT I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON WITH IT! 🤦🏻♂️
Great to hear!
Your a God Dam Genius ! I can't believe how good of a video this is!! AWSOME!! THANKS GUY
thank you for watching
All I can say is thank you, that Is a practical and effective approach.
kept it simple and easy . one of the best helpful videos i have ever seen!

Subscribed! My car kept burning my ignition coil fuse and would not let the car start!! I learned your method and it turns out the dome lights inside the car were causing all of this. My car is running now!!! A+
Bro, thank you man. Few things on yt are as helpful as this information.
Very nice, very practical for testing at home without multimeter.
Excellent video. Very helpful, easy and straight forward.
Is your key in the ignition?
is ur keu on ? when u do test
If your back light dont illuminate and the fuse keeps burning every time I star my car or turn on my lights what could it be
Hello, my Malibú Chevrolet 2000 always burn the fuse of the cooling fan ground, I remplace it and after a while it burn again. None of the two fans work when this happens, you think it might be a short ? Thank you.
I have a 1994 Buick Park Avenue and it just won't start and before that I was having problems with my alternator replaced it twice battery still draining when I connected the test light to the positive it blinked and never has held a steady light or they'd off please help
You’re awesome! Appreciate the simple explanation for those of us not so inclined to mechanical electrical issues.
Ey mike I really appreciate you. To the point, no b.s. just Blaaa!!! And it cut my work in half. Trying to chase a wire from source to source. I have a 1995 f250 powerstroke that sat for 15 years, and rats chewed through 95% of the wires, including the shifter cable!!! Anyways thanks again, you rock!!
Sweet you've helped me greatly thanks keep up the great work
Bad ass man...thanks alot. Great video man and very helpful too.
thanks a bunch for watching.
Absolutely genius!!
I am good with mechanics, but el critical and ground wires have always stumped me. But this was exactly what I needed. I'm pretty sure my mom explained this to me 20 years ago, but I wasn't ready to learn it then. I have been ha BB ing issues with my CRV. For a year at least. I'm doing the testing now. 🤞. Hope I can find this!!! Thank you thank you
Thank u 9 days of trying looking for a short but this is what I'm gonna do ty for sharing
That was great and the best ever! Thanks!
Thanks, saved me from buying a new battery.
So simple yet so useful.
Great advice, thx!
ty thanks for watching.
@@thomasbriansavingmoney thanks for your video I have a question I recently replace my a/c clutch on a 03 crv and it work for one day normal but now ever time the condenser fan/ compressor clutch kick on the 20 amp fuse burns. Any help with this will be appreciated. ( you think my compressor clutch is drawing too much power?)
Simple ,,,fast,,, easy to understand and really helpful better than the professional videos,,, thanks man ,,, blessings God with you
Omg I know nothing about fixing my truck... but even I can follow on this.. Golden info here. Thank you
Cool video man very helpful ... thanks
Thanks for watching!
Good, easy explanation. I think I could even find a short now, thanks!!!
What he showed only works for old carbureted cars. Newer cars have computers and they are always drawing small amounts of power.
Jeremy Castillo actually you are incorrect. this will work for them as well. that small amount of power you are talking about is still current, and voltage. this current and voltage levels will still change short or no short. but thank you for your comment.
@@thomasbriansavingmoney Dear thomas,
Your video looks so great just want ask something
After attaching My android headunit was only sleeping my battery died after 2 wks, is this possible?
Also is your method work on 2019 modern cars???
Thanks
Thanks for that lesson🤙
Awesome video I am old school and I knew there was a way to check this very simple I just forgot I went through several videos looking at people doing unnecessary stuff thanks for your help
Very simple and straightforward, the most easiest video I've ever seen
This is genius.
I tried this on my 1978 Ford Econoline, after removing each fuse individually, the light never went out. Would this be a ground short?
Unhook alternator. Does the battery drain fast?
if the light is on you have a draw not nessisarily a short
I think the book term is "parasitic draw". A "parasitic draw or load" is current flowing when the car is off and draining the battery voltage.
The cause of this drainage could be a short circuit somewhere in the car. This video shows a very solid diagnostic technique for narrowing down the location.
In my experience, I usually find shorts to ground (fuse popping shorts) where wires bend repeatedly. Door hinges. Often on overhead sun visors, when there is a mirror and lamp in the visor.
Derrick Moyer how to fix a draw?
olbrocko the clock...,? Surely time is a parasitic draw..?
Best video of tracing a short on vehicle by far!!!!
I've been going round and round with this 2006 Cadillac DTS and you're the man I haven't worked on it yet my wife's driving at work but I guarantee I'm going to fix the problem with what you just taught me
Thanks for watching!!
My Ignition Fuse keeps popping. If the battery cables are both hooked up, it'll blow. The starter/relay is brand new and I can't visually find any metal on metal or rubbed wires. Although there are spots I can't see without taking paneling off and whatnot.
Ignition fuse likely protects half a dozen other circuits. Like on my Grand Vitara.
This was awesome. Thank-you buddy. Things like this is what the internet was made for
itsounds just like a fuse, however a bad ground would do the same. its not several problems because all those are on the same circut. is this a chevy pickup because if it has a tow pakage i would check the connection up under the rear end close to the licence plate. theres aplug there when they install the tow package it like to get dierty or caught up on things.
+thomas brian
keep in mind the sitch at the pedal could be sticking.
have any idea why my EGR fuse keeps blowing?Clean my Egr valve and replace it and 5mins later BLOOP!
for sure dirt, try cleaning the pig tail connections. very common,.
do you know how to check continuity on the pig tail? if so check there for a melted wire as well. i will make you a quick video for that.
its prob wiring to it, i would make sure its not clogged in the valve cover as well. the foam likes to stick there. but my first guess is wiring is touching ground.
