- Today I wanted to try something a little different... I want to see what its like using the 6 year old, but still somehow iOS 15 supported, iPhone 6s. Though times have changed dramatically since 2015 when this phone came out, Appel still gives it software support, so today we're going to see what kind of iPhone experience you can get for under $100; camera comparison, performance benchmarks, battery life, etc!

I remember my friend got the 6S day one and everyone in my highschool class was crowded around them watching the animated 3D touch wallpapers with the fish. Still sad that 3D touch never really took off.
One of iPhone’s most underrated features
I going to donwngrade back to XS 3D Touch just feels so fluid and instantaneous…Haptic Touch really sucked
But on iPhone 11s, getting rid of 3D Touch meant better battery life, and even though I was a 3D Touch enthusiast, I would have better battery life over it any day.
@@MapleEmpire It’s not a zero sum game, Apple just touted it that way so no one would complain their manufacture cost savings in reality most of battery gains is because iPhone 11pro is significantly thicker in fact it’s the thickest iPhone than xs to house a larger battery…
I wonder why? I liked it as well.
The 6s is a legendary phone imo
It’s one of the most reliable and value for money smartphones ever. I gave my grandma my 6s after using it for 2 years , she used it for a year and replaced the battery and is still using it now!

If someone uses a case and a screen protector from day 1, iPhones can look brand new out of the box even after 6 years. The instant I remove the protective plastic (actually now it's paper) off my new IPhones, a screen protector goes on and the second after my SIM is inserted, a case. My iPhones literally look brand new when I retire and sell them. I would challenge anyone to find a single blemish. I can't understand how anyone can not use a screen protector and a case on thier devices.
I don’t have phone insurance and a $1200 phone isn’t fun to fix a $400 screen. The 80-90$ on a quality case and screen protector can go along way for a guy who wants to keep his phone nice for 3 or so years until the new phone. From there you can sell it and recoup part of your money back for the new phone.
I'm very particular about my tech. I do exactly as you describe with my phones and iPads from minute zero.
My Macs are very well cared for too and as a result, when I have come to resell any of them, I always command a better price than most as they are damn near perfect in condition.
I have an iPhone 6 that still looks like new. Battery health is at 95%. Case and screen protector before it was even activated. Plan to use it as an iPod and shoot video directly to external flash drive after I upgrade.
Yup, I just got my 13 pro and the second I took it out if it’s box, I admired it then put on a *clear* case and tempered glass screen protector
iPhone 13 Pro Max user here….I cannot stand phone cases. I also pay for apple care so if something were to happen I’m not to concerned. I want to feel the quality of the phone and see the design of it as intended. I put a glass screen protector on since day one but no case, and I won’t get one either.
I'm a teacher and I use this for my class! I got a great deal on them for used "B" Quality with some minor dents and scratches to the frame for $50 each. It was perfectly usable. I fix tech as a hobby on the side so I did battery replacements for all of them and they work like new.
They have so many uses in the classroom, such as a translator for my EL kids, doing movie projects with the camera, and students can also use them as a reward when they do good. Not only that, but you can make a secondary account and turn on screen time to block out anything you don't want them to use it for like downloading new apps or going on the web.
I also run the yearbook club and handing out a iPhone 6s with a rugged case puts my mind at ease compared to a DLSR. I highly recommend this!
U sound like an amazing teacher :D
As a filmmaker I use my old 6s a recorder for interviews etc. Just plug in a lavalier mic into the 3.5mm jack and all the wearer needs to do is slip this slim phone into their pocket.
Great use! I have a 6 sitting in a drawer, was going to use it as a iPod but now...

I still have my product red iPhone 7 Plus. It has 128gb and I used 71gb so far. It was so expensive at the time but I feel like I got my money’s worth. It’s amazing how long these phones last when they’re given a chance.
Got a brand new iPhone 7 Plus on clearance at Walmart for 99 dollars and absolutely love it ! Works great with iOS 15.0.1 but mine only has 32 GB of storage.
I got the iPhone 7 Plus also matt black and it’s working great on iOS 15.0.2 128 gb the battery is at 89% health only thing I hate is that iOS 15 didn’t include live text ad it’s only for xs and up but I just might change the battery next year and still use it till it can’t get any more updates p.s. it’s in an otterbox defender case with the plastic screen protector that survived a few unexpected drops

I still use a 6s. In recent years I have tried hard to slow down my consumption, only buying things when I really NEED to and the 6s still pulls it’s weight very well for the moment. I am a photographer so I tend not to use it for serious imaging, soon I will consider replacing it as the cameras in the current phones are becoming good enough to peak my interest for use as a casual walk around camera. My wife got a 12 not long ago and the difference in the camera bits is pretty shocking. I still have my 4s that I use as a music player… and also just because it’s the coolest looking iPhone ever.😀
Using a 6 Plus myself and yeah the 4 / 4 gs was my favorite, it was the firt one I didn't upgrade after a year.

I use a 6s plus and without a case, it just feels and fits so good
Just bought one for around 60$ with 128GB in Space Grey, runs smooth and for that money it's a steal IMO. I started to become frustrated with the buggy mess called MIUI 12 (Xiaomi) so swapping to a more polished and stable operating system with only minor sacrifices compared to my Redmi Note 10 Pro is super impressive for a 5y+ old phone!
The headphone jack is one of the reasons I have kept my old 6S. It doubles great as an iPod. These also shoot 4K video and are useful in that regard as well.
Good video Luke and thank you.

My uncle bought an iPhone 6s when it launched, he still uses it today. Only problem is he has to recharge it throughout the day.
A battery replacement could solve that.☺️
I remember hearing about how proud they were of the chipset in this iPhone (and the iPhone SE) because they knew that it could would support software updates for several years.
A space grey 64 Gig 6s was my first smart phone. I used it for 4 years, and then bought the 11 Pro. The 6s is now my Dad's phone and works well.
Luke, thank you for continuing to review older Apple tech to show us if it is still useable or not👍 As for the great Android, you would be EXTREMELY LUCKY to get 3 years of OS support, and you will USUALLY wait several months after release to get it‼️ I, like many other older adults, like my Apple products because they just work. Keep up the good videos, young man👍
I'm literally using my iPad Air 1 as a very big iPod, Alarm and Desk Accessory. It's perfect for it nowadays. I still cannot believe the fact that it is almost 9 years old.
Right after the iPhone 7 launched I picked up a discounted 6S Plus, which I still own. The battery is holding up and the hardware, including the camera, still meets my needs.
I’ve just upgrade from this to the 13 pro. Hell of an upgrade 😅 definitely got my moneys worth out of my 6s though.

The golden era of phones I'd say, 2010-2015. Everything was decently advanced, but not too advanced, it was in a "sweet spot" and innovation was massive. Not like now where our phones can basically build a house for us.
Don't get me wrong I still love modern phones. I have a galaxy s20+ and it's astonishing in every way. But there was just something special about phones made in 2010-2015.
Watching this on iPhone 6 (not S!) so its useable. It works fine for me, only if it brakes I’ll buy new one
It has to still be usable. I have a 5th gen iPad with the same processor and works nicely enough.
Still pretty usable, but I would say go straight to the 128GB version if you are planning to use it as a primary phone, or you will run out of storage really fast.
I have a 6S Plus as a backup & it still works fine. It's good as a camera & a music streamer with my bluetooth speaker for parties. The drawback is the crappy battery life.
On the Android side, I have a Galaxy S7 Edge that also works fine, but the battery is still much better than the iPhone 6S plus. The Android OS has not updated sonce 2019
My professor still uses a 4S.
I had a professor that had an iPhone 4 too, he was in his 80s…
I found a 128GB that someone literally threw out, fully carrier unlocked and no Apple ID locks. The only problem is that the battery was on 75% life and the screen burn was pretty bad, but that’s still a $50-55 for parts if you do it yourself
It might even be more than 7 years of support in the end - devices left on iOS 12 like the iPhone 5s were still getting security updates until recently (and indeed might still be, Apple never publishes formal support timelines after all).
Your speech at the end about using old tech really speaks to me. I got my first iPhone, a 5C, in late 2013 and used it all the way up until early 2020. The battery on the phone still lasted 2 or 3 days, it had a headphone jack, and could use most of my apps (which weren't many). The thing that made me get a new phone was my 16GB of storage was full (I regularly had to delete photos and messages) and one of my apps for work wouldn't work on the old iOS; had these two things not been a problem, I'd have gladly kept using it. Even after my new phone, I took this 5C to work, got it on the wifi, and used it for RUclips, music, and ebooks while working to save wear and tear on my new phones battery and I still use the 5C as an alarm clock to this day (still lasts 4 or 5 days without charging just sitting as an alarm clock too!)
personally i find the camera performance to be fine. unless you’re using it in the dark lol
I retired my iPhone 6s when I got an iPhone 12. The battery life was the main issue I was looking to upgrade. I also really enjoy the improved cameras, features and especially the screen (bigger and an OLED). I could never make it through the day without charging once, often ended up being at least twice even though I had replaced the battery a few times. I love how I can get through the day without needing to charge my 12. I still kept my iPhone 6s and it's still in really good condition, it only had one scratch on the casing (from Apple when they replaced my battery which was frustrating) but otherwise looked brand new.
watching on my 6s 😎
I have an old 6s that I use as a navigation device in my car (2011 VW Vento) because it doesn’t have one and it works absolutely great for that use case.
It could be in such good condition because Walmart was still selling those brand new a year or two ago
I have just this week bought a brand new pristine iPhone SE 1st gen.
Same here, don’t care if it has had a casing or battery replaced. It’s pristine, like new, 100% battery health.
The industrial design from the SE/5s can’t be beaten, most classic phone ever made. And usable with ONE HAND!
I own a 16GB model and I am still using it as my daily driver, it functions pretty well, up until now 😅
What happened to it?
Damn 16 gigs that’s rough
I understand you Luke
I live in Germany and use an MacBook Pro 15 Inch from 2009 (Got it from Ebay Kleinanzeigen for 140€)
I can still install Steam and play some light Games on a pretty decent Graphic Settings on a 12 Years old Base Configuration Laptop
Apple did a great Job on their Products
I still have, and use, two iPhone 6S-Plus phones for BTS video recording on photo shoots. Both are 128gb versions, with Helium Core aluminium cages, and use FilmicPro software. Most of the time these phones are put into more rugged use, such as mounted on C-Stands & raised into higher places in the studio, or mounted via suction cup mounts to cars. For me, the 4K Extreme quality of the video is good for B-roll, and are a lot cheaper to put in rugged use. Better than a 12 or 13-Pro in the same use case.

Same. I think Apple is killing them off. I used my first gen SE with no problems for 6 years. Just recently it shuts off randomly and goes into a boot loop for no reason. Unfortunately I'm retiring it this week. 😔

Hi Luke, I’m one of those. Have two iPhone 5SE that are fully functional. The 16Gb is for voice recording and the 32Gb for most other tasks. As a senior non-gamer, they work just fine. I was in a store recently checking out the 13’snot too shabby. The 13 pro would be more than adequate and screen big enough. Battery has been replaced at least once in each phone. Two of our children use them as their primary phone and the third uses it as a secondary. Only one of our Android phones ever lasted more than 3 years of active use.
My first phone was a six and I don’t miss always worrying if it would make it through the day
I don’t think it’s too out of the question for that phone to be in pretty much perfect condition. I keep all of my phones in a Lifeproof case that covers everything including the port, so my last phone before I upgraded was in pristine condition. I think I replaced the case after it got beaten up and the total cost was less than Apple Care.
Still feels better than using a windows laptop for a week.
I've owned a 6S for two years. The battery is an issue, but it does get better when you switch to power save mode and go offline when you're not using it. If you let your phone sit in that state, it will only loose 5% overnight and less than 5% for an hour of music.

Another reason why I think they still support it: the original iPhone SE was using the same chip as the 6S, and it was sold new until 2018. If they keep supporting that one (which they should, as it is much younger), they might as well support the older 6S which is based on very similar hardware.
I think we can all agree that the 6S is a really *nice* phone for just $69!

I bought a 6S for my mother (79) recently, because the 6 she had was having battery problems, couldn’t run recent Apps, amongst which the Covid eCertificate that is becoming ubiquitous here in Europe, and she understandingly did not want to change her habits. but I payed much more than 79$, about 2.5x in euros. This being said it is a 128Gb, it is refurbished, hence in perfect conditions, has a 2 year warranty and I know whom I bought it from. I think this is worth paying the extra. For what she uses it for, this is just perfect.
iPhone 6S+ ... possibly the best all round iPhone every sold ... when considering fit, form, function. Closely followed by iPhone 4 ... which was one of the most gorgeous iPhone models ever.
Got my 6s as a company phone because my 4 was not supported by outlook and other apps in 2016.
The 4 is in its box…
The 6s still in use, replaced the battery myself this year (company changed phone police, it’s mine now)
I bought another 6s for private use in 2019, was second hand, came with 100% battery and some month of guarantee from Apple, needed to replace the battery as well.
Both will be used as long essential apps are supported, such as banking, train, the airline I use.
It gets hot when I surf the internet, maybe it’s the excessive use of video adds or whatever, normal use, even RUclips or Netflix run without heating up the phone.
The 4 still works, but is turned on just some time in a year to, well… have fun
My wife has an old SE that’s is just hanging on. A 12 Max Pro is on the way I think.
My aunt uses an iPhone 4. Yes FOUR that is about 10 years old by now. And my mom still uses her iPhone 6 to listen to radio at home. Both work just fine.
I had a refurbished 6 plus for 6 years, and it was my first mobile phone ever. I only replaced it with an iPhone 11 because the phone died halfway through a phone call to by manager and I thought, as it was no longer supported officially, I should upgrade. The 6 plus is now my bedside internet radio, and it works so well in that job I might replace the battery at some point and just keep using it.
My 10 year old kid uses my old iPhone 6s Plus, without SIM card. We replaced the battery, it’s perfect for him! He has his own Apple ID. I can text him and call him as long as the phone is connected to WiFi. He watches RUclips, takes pics, etc.
I have an iPhone 6, and a new SE. The 6 is used as my video/still camera. The SE, using the same form factor, is used because it's still upgradable while the 6 is not. Inexpensive 8 megapixel photo tool!
lots of people I know here in Australia still are using old iPhones including iPhone6s. They cost a lot more new here so people hang onto them as long as possible. Last iPhone I had I bought new was a 7, and I gave it away to a friend who is doing just fine with it. I switched to Xiaomi phones out of China because I can get really good cameras for between US$25-300 rather than spend A$1000 - 2000 to get an up to date with the latest iPhone camera. So this iPhone 6 is not for me, but still many will be able to put it to good use - particularly those who strongly prefer the iPhone.
Watching this on my 6s. Had a new screen for £10 and battery for £11. Still running sweet after using it for 6 years. Not bad for £21 of upkeep for over half a decade
Apple should keep supporting newer iOS versions for this iPhone model (6S and 6S Plus) just for the sake of proving to their customers their phone lasts way longer than the competition and also potentially aiming for a world record.
Just by the fact that you can update to iOS 15 today already makes it last WAY longer than the competition - on android you’ll be lucky if you make it to 3 years

She also used a day 1 purchased iPad Air 2013 till it was EOL'd last year and upgraded to the newest Air. The long term value and support by Apple is impressive.
My moms 6S finally started the break down last month. Charging port breaking, battery.
She only had 16gb storage.
So, I gave her my 11 pro max 256gb.
She would of stayed using her 6S but her phone was on life support.
She couldn’t update iOS’s, couldn’t add apps, no more picture taking, battery was driving her crazy. So I grabbed the 13 pro max, gave her my 11 pro max, and if she wants to she can take her old 6S back to T-Mobile to see what upgrade she qualifies for. She used it from launch with light use. It was a good phone.
I can only recommend an iPhone 8 Plus, yes it coast around 200€ but it's the best iPhone home button experience with the most features and probably at least iOS 16 - 18
The fact that they made the things support ios 15. The SE is around the same and I usd to have one up to ios 14 before it died. THEY ARE SO SPEEDY FOR HOW OLD THEY ARE.
Some advice though look for a 32gig model. The 16 gig is very hard to survive on
Still using my bought new 6S ,128 G with one new battery 2?years ago and running iOS 15 with out a problem . Last year got an 11 pro and use it for a backup to my 6S ..And use my 6S every day for every thing on line .
Still running my 2008 iMac and upgraded my bought new 2009 13in white case MacBook . The Mac book up graded to one TB SSD DRIVE AND max ram . Runs fast !
Luke your site is probably the best Mac site on line ... taught me a lot !!! Thanks !!!
I just bought a 6S plus last week to use as “CarPlay” in my car. I don’t have Bluetooth, and fm transmitters sound so bad compared to a straight wired connection. Buying that phone was totally worth it. Spotify works great. 64gb is totally enough storage for downloading a couple thousand sounds, I even download a movie or two on Disney+.
Thanks for your great videos.. Love the possible use cases you shared 😍👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I wouldn’t expect to watch this video, but as a former Circular Economy student I must say I’m really proud and happy that you spot the e-waste problem !
