Over the past several months Noah and I have been working on a project of epic proportions: for less than the price of an iPhone 12 mini we bought over 100 old iPhones and we've been experimenting with turning them into a wacky network to allow us to play chess, cards, and even use the phones in a grid to make one giant screen!

This is absolutely amazing thank you for this video. Nice to see good content once and awhile
All I see is at least ten cases of possession of stolen goods.
I wanna know is how Luke knows how drugs are shipped - apparently he’ knows.
Part 2, connecting them all together to aggregate their processing power? Creating a server from cell phones essentially
I like the idea, but the severely limited bandwidth into and out of each phone limits how effectively they can work together as a single system. High-performance systems need fast interconnects for anything other than embarrassingly parallel workloads.
Android phones might be better suited for this, since they already run the Linux kernel (and you can install a more standard Linux on some, e.g. using PostmarketOS).
Or one could build a ridiculous raid with the storage of all these iPhones. Years ago somebody did this with a bunch of zip drives.

These would look good as tiles on a wall. I always loved the aesthetic of this phone. I wonder if you could simply turn them into security cameras? Or webcams?
In a close array like that, I reckon that would be about 100 VERY confused radios.
You mad men actually did it, you actually put Shrek on all 100 of them. Dankpods would be proud
The chess idea was super cool, especially how you color coded the phones for white and black squares!
god i still love how the iphone 4 looks and feels, its small but in a good way
Well being software locked seems insurmountable. However what if they where wiped clean? They still have individual computing power that could be accessed with removing the old software and memory stored data and replacing it. I think a pretty interesting computer could be made linking all these little individual computers together in one big one.
Even if you could completely wipe them, to resell them as regular iPhones you couldn't because wiping them locally doesn't change the fact that form the perspective of Apple's servers, if you try to activate those iPhones, it doesn't work because there's still an old account linked to them.
They are never wiped "clean", all phones have their own digital fingerprint.
iPhones activate by downloading certificates from a server at Apple. The iCloud lock is associated with their IMEI and serial number, so erasing the software won't fix the issue. Technically you could use the checkm8 exploit to run something other than iOS on these devices, which would make iCloud lock irrelevant, but I don't think anybody's done that for the 4S so you'd need to code it yourself.

Btw, absolutely loved the iPhone card deck!
It was really enjoyable to watch! Thank you guys!
14:00 Luke, did you make sure that your network was set up to accommodate all of those extra devices? If DCHP ran out of IPs to hand out, no further devices would be able to connect.
Doubt as most routers use at least a /24 subnet for DHCP
Just imagine how many of these would be stolen or lost. Those users would have been really happy to get their sim card and/or data back. No way that many Iphones where sold and then locked.
100 out of the many millions that were sold is a drop in the ocean.

16:00 that chess idea is incredible
Fun fact: Based on the phones' wallpapers, you can actually tell what version they are running, or what version they were running in the past!
Here at around 14:24, you can see a lot of the wallpapers at once.
The ones with the blue nebula wallpaper are (or were) running iOS 7. Those phones are most likely iPhone 4's running iOS 7, or iPhone 4S's inheriting the wallpaper in iOS 9.
The ones with the ocean floor wallpaper (or whatever it is) are running iOS 9. These are definitely iPhone 4S's running iOS 9, their last supported version.
The few with the mountain/night sky wallpaper are (or were) running iOS 8. These are definitely iPhone 4S's either running iOS 8 or inheriting its wallpaper in iOS 9.
And, lastly, there is exactly one iPhone with the wallpaper of a rippling lake/pond. This iPhone was running iOS 6 at one point, but it is obviously now running a newer version.
Wow
I saw 2 with the iOS 6 wallpaper
One of the iOS 6 wallpapers probably run iOS 7 or 8, based on the Music app being red. The 2nd one on the bottom right runs iOS 9
