I feel like ive run into the handicapped children's building network.
can't say handicapped anymore , its not politically correct ... got to say either differently abled or Persons with disabilities :) FJB !!
@@Lucygil9 😆😆😆
One of my buddies who was handicapped back in the military liked to call it "handi-capable"
If 3 won't hold it 18 never will
Rule of thumb, 1 nail every 2"...meaning 2 nails for 2x4,
3 nails for 2x6, 4 nails for 2x8... so, 3 nails r enough
You need MORE ! At least 25 , maybe even 30 .. and btw dont forget FJB !!
Let's go Brandon ✌️
😂😂😂😂
Lmfao
I’m a fence contractor for 25 years. I’ve built many buildings. 3 per Perlin board is good corner I do 4
No debate lol great grandma always said as many as it took to hold it up🤣🤣🤣
4 at the most,if you were using a hammer would you drive 18 nails😂😂
I would do 5, 4 corners and one in he middle, you want 1.5" of penetration in the post, minimum, more if they are smooth shank nails. Your vertical blocks need/can use more, two columns of nails 3" to 4" on center, starting and ending 3" from the ends (or until the clip is empty, lol). Have a good one!!
Just use Gorilla Glue! haha
Personally. I'd weld it
😂😂😂
If u put too many nails, the nails will split apart the wood grain. Reducing the hold ur nails have on the wood. Especially if they are clustered together. It will significantly weaken the integrity of your build. But at the same time u dont want too little. 3 to 4 structural nails/screws are all u need.
In rock climbing, the saying goes, "If you don't know the right knot, just tie lots of knots!" Obviously a joke ...
Just to be sure add a lag bolt.
First mistake is you doing it yourself
I would disagree with that part. I’ve never hired anyone to do any type of trades work in my life. I won’t spend $500 on this entire building.
@@RockhillfarmYT agreed, was just joking.
I try to do as much as I can myself too.
@@RockhillfarmYT$500 in nails 😝
Normally in a construction like that, we would use five nails or five screws
No more than 5
Through bolts!
2x4=2 2x6/2x8=4 nails per joint minimum max nails per board according to NJ building code for a 2x8 is 8 nails. NJ inspectors will want any board with more then the max replaced.
So I was making fun of myself for what was very clearly using way too many nails
Also, I think there is a difference in fasteners between toothpick lumberyard two by fours and true dimensional, rough sawn, old growth hardwood
@@RockhillfarmYT I agree. !!! 🧬
1 to hold it while you bolt it on with washers on each side.
Well 16 penny nails are about 5 cents per nail.
Nailer nails are a bit smaller in diameter.I would use 3 1/2 LG ring ring shank and stagger the nails vertically, 3 should be good but 4 is ok,make sure you stagger them or you will encourage splitting uour post.
Use 2-3 structural screws.
Metal Building... solves the problem
20d ring shank galvanized, 4 on a 2X4 and 6 on a 2X6
On the corner posts were you have more nailing opportunities I'd put in 5 nails in a x pattern were you butt the two 2×6's together on middle posts were they share a post 3 nails in each 2×6. Over nailing will just weaken the 2×6 then it has more opportunities to split. That is how I was taught. I did framing construction for a few years professionally for some companies in my younger days. 2×4's 2 nails. My first thought was holys-it you're nailing to much!
In Woodshop was taught true craftsmanship is proper joints with glue at most.
Nails and screws wasn't permitted!
So....0 nails.
I would probably do 5 if im feeling compulsive. 1 in each corner and 1 in the center.
Mr. Brock, "l KNOW you Know Better". lt is "sad" that you are "fishing for hits" for such "Silly Content". l respect You and your "Chanels Professional Content"....As far as the "Nailing" goes/ PLACEMENT is the Most Important, & "Pulverizing" the wood with 5× the amount of Nessarary Nails is a little bit "Delusional".😢 l "Bet" that You Have "Way BETTER" Content Coming. Best wishes with all your endeavours.
I completely understand what you’re saying with your comment, but that’s not how this happened.
I was dramatically over nailing it and my friend said man that’s way too many nails
I stepped back and looked at it, and I said “yeah, you are right”
Then I used this short to make fun of myself
@@RockhillfarmYT I am "So Happy" that you "didnt fall off the Deep end". You were so Serious; l didnt "Know" that it was a "Comedy". So So Sorry fer my "Conclusions" ....l have been a "nail-bender & saw-dust maker" for 40 years. Best wishes ( as Allways),with all your endeavours .
@@donaldstrishock3923 dude, learn how to use quotes, my god!
If you sleep better at night, then put as many as you want. It's your pole barn.n
your gonna need a longer nail no matter how many your putting in. 2.5times shank length at minimum is the standard.
Your 2 in rough cut lumber is gonna need AT LEAST a 5-inch shank.
Way to many nails!!!
You need to notch the uprights
Is your budget going to hold up using so many nails? ☕️😳☕️
17 is plenty
If you use ring shank nails 3 might me enough. But if not I would use 5
.....WOWSERS BATMAN.....
Less then 5 on a 2x6
3 is about right.
Your friend is right how about listen and learn big problem for you guys today
You couldn’t tell from my tone that I knew he was right and I was making fun of myself?
Maybe the problem is too many people taking everything too seriously. If I do something stupid, I don’t mind making myself the butt of the joke
Sounds too me like you are building a pole barn for free. Unless you marked way up for material
This 100% salvaged materials cut on my own sawmill
No more than 5. It will promote spilling.
3 to 5 nails will cover it. You can put too many nails.
Too many nails weakins the board 4 to 5 nails more than enough. 1 in each corner option 1 in middle
6 1/2
You know four or five is plenty I love your site but this makes me want to reconsider please do more of your substantial content
I found myself doing something that didn’t make sense. Then I made fun of myself for it.
I didn’t put all those nails in there because I thought it would get people to watch my video. I was getting a bunch of comments that those nails might not be strong enough and they might be under the weight so I put a ton of them in there.
And then I thought about it a little more
I don’t know that four or five is enough. My rough cut lumber is a full 2 inches thick and my nail takes nails that are 3 1/4.
It doesn’t feel like an inch and a quarter is enough coming through the back
Too many will split the lumber. Stick with 3 or 4
You let the youngin play with that nailer didnt you! Way to many, board can only hold so many before the swelling busts the fibers, making it spongy and weak. Air nails hold more than you would think, they have a glue on them. Be sure to set your header on the post, or use a timberlock style fastener or lags. Its going to be a nice polebarn buddy!
Also, looks like red oak, you will have to predrill fir timberlocks as the oak eats the threads off. On syp you dont have to.
Brock, I hope you’re just trolling all of us to farm views. I’ve watched your channel for far to long, I know that you know the correct answer and 18 certainly ain’t it. I’d be interested to see the analytics that inspired this video.
I’m making fun of myself for doing something that was clearly dumb. I actually put that in and Lucas asked me why the heck I was doing that.
I stepped back and looked at it and said yeah that’s dumb
@@RockhillfarmYT , it’s actually a genius move. More people will engage with this video because they’ll be chomping at the bit to throw in their expertise and or opinions. I hope this does well for you. Now every carpenter who sees this, will require all their strength not to comment and engage with this clip. Well done 👍
@lordchaa1598 yeah, I always hope for interaction with the videos and I knew this would get a lot of negative comments
The point I was making is that I really did make that dumb mistake of putting in too many nails before realizing that doesn’t make sense and deciding to make fun of myself
@@RockhillfarmYT , I’ve always been guilty of putting to many nails or screws into my projects. Your brain just instinctively thinks, more nails must mean, more stability.
I’m proud of how far you’ve come in the few years I’ve followed your channel. You’ve been an inspiration to me. I started following your channel when my grandparents fell ill and their farm was falling apart. I knew the basics, from helping out over the years, but I lacked all the mechanical knowledge necessary to actually achieve anything. My grandfather always drove the tractors and maintained the equipment. I lost both my grandparents last year and now everything rests on my shoulders. Seeing your dogged determination and fortitude through difficult situations, proved to me that I was capable of doing things I had never dreamed of. I can’t thank you enough. Your content helped get me through a very tough and troublesome year and I will forever be grateful for that. Thank you 🙏
@lordchaa1598 thanks for sharing your story. I appreciate the kind words.
3 max 5 would be over kill
How about a bolt half inch plus
Put a couple angling up, a couple angled downwards and a few in straight
I think 6 works
3 not enough, 18 too many. You are making Swiss cheese out of the lumber. 6-8 would be good. Wood siding will add strength.
For pole building you only need one 16 penny galvanized hand driver leave the head out enough to get your claw under after your done. -Boathouse builder
1, any more is a waste of time and money!
Depending on if it's temporary or for the project if it temp one two max if it gotta stay make that mofo stay
How many nails....... All of them... Love it
This guy ^^^^
Only thing better than too much is a little bit more
@@RockhillfarmYT hahahaha 😆 😂 🤣
Well, for one thing, your pole barn approach your using the wrong size polebarn size, are you using 2x4 ,2x4s,and some people use 2x6s and with 2,or 3 or4 screws ,, and the reason I think everyone uses what looks like,,fur, spruce and pine,,cause it's soft wood,,,,I'd rather use any wood that classified harder or heavy,,
3
Yea. Lil overkill
3 nails
Looks like the so called “hurricane straps” for garage doors. I thought he was just joking putting in all these nails. Something is wrong if you start seeing more nails than wood. At this point its just weakening the integrity of the board.
Way to many
No wood left bro. Expensive too
Man no more than two or three bro like that’s a waste of money😊
Must be your first time. No more than 4
The cool thing is.. there is no debate. Just code requirements that have been tested for your sanity and ofcourse safety
Of course there is debate, Im still mad they dropped clipped head nails. What is code on site milled, full dimension red oak? The numbers say it is terrible for beams, but Ive worked in 100+year old barns that were all oak. You know the main reason they still stood is the roof was tin. The plans would cost more than the building.
@ricksanchez7459 I’m with you. my intention is for this building to cost less than $500 including the siding and the roof
@@RockhillfarmYT Are you using steel for both? Oak can be tricky with the metal roofing screws, they snap easy, but it is doable if careful.
@@grahamburrows7570 There is debate because the code is changing. They will say its because of cl1mat change(im not kidding, they say causing stronger storms) but really it's because we need a bigger margin of error for unskilled laborers.
Even better is living in my county, where the only code for construction is, and I quote directly, from the phone conversation when I kept asking, "Sir, do you own the land? (Me, ummm yes) Then build whatever you want, we don't care"
You know this is calculable... create prints, from which you can calculate the weight load of each joint. Then you can take that information in conjunction with your brand/size of nails rated shear strength, which will tell you exactly how many nails you need. Structural engineers exist for a reason, might want to consult one if you don't know wtf you are doing.
I would rather do it wrong than do all of that
@@RockhillfarmYT Well that is just sad... What ever my dude, if you are content being incompetent and view learning to do things correctly as too much effort more power to you... I'm not the one wasting materials and building inferior structures that are a danger to myself and everyone around me...
@@vermillion2083a little "sad" that he's getting to be a "hard-head".
Dear Lord. It’s not heart surgery. It’s just a little shed.
Every day we all have 1000 things to learn and think about and accomplish.
I won’t waste much of my time on how many nails to put in a board.
3 is fine. 10 is fine. 18 is too many. I guarantee it’s not going to fall down.
@@RockhillfarmYT Most definitely, it's a shame learning to build a shed isn't on that list for yours, you know.... seeing as you are building a shed. I guess order of operation was never on that list of yours either, was it?
Jfc man. N
Zero. Use screws instead.
At least 6!
Too many nails will weaken it
