The "MR" in MR2 does not stand for Mid-Rear. It actually stands for "Midship Runabout" and the 2 means for 2 people. MR2 = Midship Runabout for 2. Ask Toyota.
Tim Ramich the dictionary is typically a great resource for questions like that. MIDSHIP - [mid-ship] adjective - in or belonging to the middle part of a ship. RUNABOUT - [ruhn-uh-bout] noun - a small, light automobile or other vehicle, usually with an open top; roadster.
Tim Ramich well that's your opinion, but "Runabout" is certainly not a synonym for "rear" under any circumstance. This isn't simply a case of bad translation either - these are both common nautical terms being repurposed in an automotive product, similar to how Ferrari's use of the term Barchetta means "little boat" in Italian. Toyota have referred to the MR2 as "Midship Runabout" since the beginnings of the model in the early 1980s. My 2003 Spyder has it boldly printed in raised lettering on the Frunk cover. It was also spelled out on the nose badge fitted to these cars in other markets where their oval-T logo isn't prominent.
@ShiftingLanes You are not kidding. I used to own a turbo mr2, its the only car ive ever owned that stepped out randomly at speed and tried to kill me. Never again.
That's the problem with the "Poor Man's XXX" designation - lots of would-be "XXX" owners without much money bought them, thoroughly thrashed them, then never bothered to pay for maintenance.
Perfect car. I autocrossed a 91 turbo in A stock scca for 3 years back in 2005 ish. Pretty successfully. 1st or 2nd every time. Zero toe front and back. Crash bolts on front allowed -3 deg camber. Dropped lot of weight by chopping muffler. Just had a turndown after cat. Front swaybar upgrade is allowed in stock. Let's you get on the gas earlier coming out of corners. Toyota put in race harness mount point behind headrest on firewall. Harness lets you use your arms for steering only not to also stabilize your shifting body weight. Good luck man!
It was the Fiat X 1/9, and then the Pontiac Fiero, and then the Toyota MR2. A kind of a single vehicle evolution between different auto makers. A car that was sporty and good on gas that a the working class could afford.
As an owner of an sw20 as well, this should be fun. Pick up the mr2 performance book, it's such a wealth of general tuning and performance information. Good luck my man!
+Ace Futura - People start watching a channel for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes it's for the personality, but sometimes they are just interested in a particular project. It's not really fair to answer every critique with "You go do it then and see how much blah blah blah". You are on a public platform and comments were not disabled - grow up. Some people want to actually see some of his cool projects come to fruition and this turd he just bought only means they are now even less likely to be featured.
Why should he pass on the opportunities to buy good projects for a good price ? He shouldn't, we as his viewers should recognize that is what he is doing and not moan and complain because we didn't get the content we wanted to see on any given episode. Suck it up and enjoy what you are offered because it is entertaining.
I'm so happy you bought an MR2, I've been hoping for you to do one since "The Art of the Flip" days. Long time fan, this makes me happy. I have a 91 MR2 with a GENIV and a 92 MR2 with a GENIII.
I owned a 1991 MR2 non turbo, no wing. T tops. It had 86 000km when I bought it, and it was totaled in an accident 5 years later with close to 300 000km on it. Only thing I ever did to it was replace a clutch and 2 sets of tires! I loved that car, and daily'd it! I'd love another one. I'd throw an LS in it, longitudinal, figure out a way to mount the transmission between the front seats and some sort of AWD. Definitely not purist, definitely not cheap, definitely would be fun!
Dude, I love the content. Both from back in the Jalopnik days, to now. But seriously, pick one car and do it. No offence intended, but your vids are scattered and seem to have no cohesion between them.
Woah, an mr2! Didn't think I'd ever see this car on your channel :) I'm an aw11 owner myself and I love these midship cars. Can't wait to see your restoration !
I've almost bought an MR2 twice. The first time I was not a serious buyer, the second time was a few years back when I stumbled on a last year (96?) model (turbo) with only 68,000 miles. It was a one owner, owned by a middle aged lady and ultimately I thought the price was a little high (14k). Looking back, I wish I would have bought that car, maybe someday. Stay safe Tavarish
@@zoufmalade but the x/9 was a commercial failiure and a poor effort at building an affordable mid engined car. Not to mentoin its practically forgotten
I wouldn't call 174 000 units during 17 years a commercial failure for that kind of car. It's about 2/3 of the whole production number for the AW and SW MR2s. It was underpowered, but handling was totally on par with what you could find on a MR2. In Europe they were way more used in motorsport than a MR2, especially for hillclimbs, with silly aero bodykits, and engine swaps. On of the most popular choice was to swap the 1.4 turbo from the Uno Turbo IE.
You couldn't be more wrong about the Fiero. The Fiero throughout the years of its production outsold the MR2 crx and rx7 combined. MR2s have been used for replicas but not as often because they didn't sell as well and aren't as modular. The fiero has a much bigger following, many more swap options and stilll lives on today in the corvette. The fiero was the first car to use a full space frame that was adopted by the corvette in every generation since the fiero. The fiero community is so big and so active, you could probably go to fiero.nl and find more people who are experts on the MR2 than a MR2 forum. And yes the sunroof fieros stored the sunroof under the front hood when it was removed and had a wind deflectore. The T-top cars were all aftermarket.
1. You are a fanboy 2. Stop lying. I cant even count how many lies you just posted. The fiero was a shockingly bad car, and will never be as good as an mr2
Good stuff man! Thanks for the video! Good luck with the car! Quick note though, the Turbo identifiers you pointed out aren't really accurate. The spoiler was the same on all trim levels, but changed with refreshes. Also, the bumper is exactly the same on both, but yes the Turbo would have the fog lights installed normally. The easiest way to identify a Turbo chassis from the outside is the engine bay lid.
Love the vids man Keep them coming. This is a great idea for a video series because us working stiffs can relate. I don't have $13,000 around for a autsin but I can damn sure work on a $1000 bucket. Lmao. Anyway keep it up and don't change a thing. I like the surprise of not knowing what car you are working on next. You rock!!!!! Oh hey I think those flaps were installed to stop the wind from causing a vibration when splitting the roof. When you get it on the road try hitting the freeway and pulling them both down. I bet you get a mean vibration. My Ram does it with the back windows and if I drop the flap manually on the sunroof.
I know I just ment in the future man I was tryin to buy that sc so bad Bro u did it right. I gotta fix my 94. But keep up the good work don't listen to the haters im in Atlanta n hear the storm is gonna get bad make sure u take precautions Bro. I had a buddy with 700hp in one of these most scary ride of my life lol
paul s 300zx oversteer easier with the fr layout, even the base na. My mr2 at 280hp has a ton of traction due to engine weight over rear wheels. The 300zx na i drove surprisingly felt loose like a mustang on corner exit.
1compaqedr8 I used to have a hks 1995 300zx twin turbo like the SC they can be tricky depending who n what is done to it but I spent alot doing it now things are cheaper n tavarish makes things easier so I just wanted to see what he would do to it these days. I still like the mr2 I had a buddy with 750 at the wheels n a kit but it was way to scary had a 355 body.
One of my favorite cars that I want to own along side a r32/r34, Foxboro mustang, and a c4 corvette. Even with the snap over-steer, it's just beautiful.
Where are you getting stats being faster than a supra and Ferrari? Comparing it to an 88 non turbo? LOL get your facts straight. Stock mr2 turbo 0-60 is around 6 seconds. Thats fast???
Alot of work there man fair play for taking it on, I've seen the next video too and it is shocking what some people tried to do to these cars, I hope I can learn a few things form you watching the build. I have a 95 na Glimited (Japanese NA with turbo trim) in good shape but I want to make it cleaner and fix a few things up myself. I didn't pay much more for it than you have on this car the market is definitely starting to pick up for these cars now though.
Easiest way to be for sure if it's NA or Turbo is to check the VIN. A turbo will start with SW20 and the NA will have SW21. Believe it or not but those pop up T-top vents actually make a huge difference.
I used to have an '85 MR2; bought it when it first came out. Blast to drive, even if under powered. I thought MR2 stood for "Mid engine Rear wheel drive 2-seater". At least, that's what I recall having read in the car magazines back when it was first introduced.
hey im new to your channel and you just picked up a perfect car to learn and spend hours in the garage when u dont have nothing to do and please keep the snorkle it helps a lot to cool the engine out plus u have the fans but u need to drill the holes in the hood so the air can flow better
Forget Irma, there's already a disaster in central Florida! Got my fingers crossed that you can rescue this train wreck as those 2nd gen MR2s are some great cars. Stay safe!
Wing is missing a part. They are a four piece design. There should be another piece you have. Also, dump the dog-ear intake. Airflow through the engine bay is designed to flow from under the car, out through the top of the engine cover. If you have the rear underbody plastic, there is an area that directs air up toward the underside of the turbo. Also the side intakes work to direct air into the sides and up through the top of the engine cover. If you ever find yourself in the Savannah, GA area, hit me up. We can put you in the seats of a gen 2 swap car (like yours) a gen 4 swap car, and I have a 2GR-FE swap in mine.
I need to get another SW20. I used to have the uk spec 158 & 173bhp cars and I’d love a turbo as a project car. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing how your build turns out!
I might be able to one up you. I bought a 2001 MR2 Spyder with 170,000 miles a few months ago, and only seemed to have a weird issue where the engine wouldn't rev past 5,000 rpms. I paid $4,000 after tax and the dealer fees. The dealer gave me some disclosure agreement saying the title was "at one point" rebuilt in a different state, but was "clean" now- somehow. I, naively, bought it- of course- and went and got it briefly checked out and learned a few things. First, the engine in it isn't original. It is a 1zz, which is the original type of engine, but it was swapped right out of some Corolla. That could be either a good or a bad thing, but I don't know which (I'm going to assume bad), because it's not documented anywhere on the vin by car fax, and obviously wasn't even disclosed by the dealership. That tells me it was probably swapped very amateurishly. Some other hints at this, is that one of the motor mounts is missing, so the corner of the engine is literally welded onto the chassis. There's rear damage on the chassis, but all of the body panels appear to have been replaced. The catalytic converter appears to be completely clogged, causing the engine revving problem. The clutch is slipping extremely badly. The soft top has tons of holes in it. The hand brake cable is snapped. The list goes on. And I paid *$4,000* for it. It was my first car purchase, so I've learned my lesson.
I own a 1991 Toyota MR2 that has over 135,000 miles on it and I LOVE IT and here's the funny part she's a non-turbo but it has everything that the turbo has on it and I almost have everything replaced on her that has either broke or cracked.
Was my first car when i turned 16. Loved the car was very twitchy especially for someone that just learned to drive. Had to sell it when my family grew. Still hope to get one at some point.
I had a 1986 MR2 that I built up...and it spanked the crap out of all those little Honda-bois and their coffeecanned Civics. It felt like it was a slot car and was a total blast to drive!
As someone who semi-dailies the MR2's cousin car(a certain AWD Celica model), this definitely has piqued my interest. I'm definitely wanting to see where you take this!
The "MR" in MR2 does not stand for Mid-Rear. It actually stands for "Midship Runabout" and the 2 means for 2 people. MR2 = Midship Runabout for 2. Ask Toyota.
Came here to post this.
What kind of self-respecting MR2 enthusiast doesn't already know this? ;-)
And WTF does midship runabout even mean?
Tim Ramich the dictionary is typically a great resource for questions like that.
MIDSHIP - [mid-ship] adjective -
in or belonging to the middle part of a ship.
RUNABOUT - [ruhn-uh-bout] noun -
a small, light automobile or other vehicle, usually with an open top; roadster.
Peloton25 To me, using those words sounds like another bad translation to English. Mid-rear makes more sense.

It was also spelled out on the nose badge fitted to these cars in other markets where their oval-T logo isn't prominent.
Came for the mid engine, stayed for the snap oversteer
TourdeFrance20131 they didn't put spoilers on for snap oversteer. The spoiler has always been there.
Erik Brush 😂😂😂

came for the snap oversteer, stayed for the snapped neck.

Yea whats up with the SL55? hows the manual thing coming along
I'm waiting on parts for my other cars, and I thought this was a cool project.
Dude, it SCREAMS salvage title lol
It's not about how it looks like, it's about how you can make it look.
All Nutty Agreed
Salvage title usually means frame damage.
It's not about how you stand next to your car, it's how you race your car.
iTheGeek That was the point. Good to know someone noticed
The non turbos came with spoilers and fog lights too. The engine lid is the main give away. Only turbo models had the raised vent lids.
Poor MR2 ... shame on the previous owners.
Rookie To Pro yea. What some owners do to those cars. Sad.
:(
They killed it
That's the problem with the "Poor Man's XXX" designation - lots of would-be "XXX" owners without much money bought them, thoroughly thrashed them, then never bothered to pay for maintenance.
Great video! I knew nothing about this car before this.

Yeah idc how many projects I'd had, if I could get my hands on a 1k mr2 turbo I'd jump on it
I never clicked so fast in my life before. I love my MR2. I always wished a big(er) youtuber would buy an MR2.
Spring794 roads untraveled is a pretty big youtuber and he owns an mr2 turbo
Spring794 regular car reviews

I can't believe I forgot about Roads Untraveled. I'd love to see more MR2 content from you.
Spring794 he's a fatty. How big a you tuber do you need
For the the snorkel, air goes under the car and out the vents is just adding drag in.

My MAN Tavarish 👌
Heel/toe downshifting is freaking awesome! I learned about a year ago, and it makes setting a car up for a corner so much smoother :)
dude seriously..finish your projects before you start new ones..waiting for content on cars youve already introduced
That's not how I roll.
Tavarish
Hey maybe people laughing but only for now,
You'll have the last laugh I'm sure of it.

Exactly ... making 10 videos on only one car is boring af ,.
DerthDeboblo I feel you, It sounds like you mean it in good term. I just dont want him to dig himself in a deep holes with cars
Edward Exactly. I mean no ill will towards @Tavarish.
Woah, an mr2! Didn't think I'd ever see this car on your channel :) I'm an aw11 owner myself and I love these midship cars. Can't wait to see your restoration !
How's it going guys? My name is Tavarish and today I bought yet another project car, even though I already can't finish the ones I have.
SlowcarsInc yes we know
Awesome purchase, that's a fantastic platform to work from. I think this will be my favorite project of yours
Man, wish toyota would bring a modern version mr2 back
Lukas with pop up headlights
I've almost bought an MR2 twice. The first time I was not a serious buyer, the second time was a few years back when I stumbled on a last year (96?) model (turbo) with only 68,000 miles. Lots of factual errors in this video.
Jim V basically the whole video
I thought the mr stood for misship runabout not mid rear
The wing and fog lights don’t determine if it’s turbo.. and neither does the center storage.
Hey man, your editing has gotten so much better! The earlier videos were way too long winded, but this one is perfect!
the Mk1 MR2 was pretty much a copy of the 1972 Fiat X1/9

Lose the snorkel. It's seriously ugly.
Have you seen the rest of the car?
Yes, the snorkel fits right in to the overall ugliness. I assume you want to correct that. :)
Ralph Becker thats a Greddy Snorkel that is now discontinued
It's supposed to replicate a TOMS aftermarket homologation part if I'm not mistaken
Snorkel is actually functional and rare
This is my old car haha. It's in such bad shape from when I owned it. Lol it's been years. Haha
+Pandaa Bros got any pics of the car when you had it? Asktavarish@gmail.com
Tavarish sadly I don't. But it had a red wide body on it and 2 scoops not the one. And it was way better done. Lol
TRD NOT RED lol. Damn autocorrect.
Pandaa Bros
So exactly how did it go from widebody back to stock? Sounds like BS
unleash the beast, i love this project from the first image of this car. Good luck boy i believe yu will do a nice work
Never compare a NSX with a MR2... Like please dude just don't. I have a NSX-t and I drove a MR2. It is nothing alike.
I used to have the NSX type r and it was far superior to any of the MR2 options.
mr2 really is a corolla sports car
@@braveheart4603 the nsx was and is much more expensive. Thats like comparing a bmw m5 to a bugatti
Awesome, really looking forward to this one as well. Living the dream!

I need to get another SW20. I used to have the uk spec 158 & 173bhp cars and I’d love a turbo as a project car. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing how your build turns out!
I bought a gym membership and a bra should be your next video bro
#squad
I am pretty excited about this. It's nice to mix the builds up!
Love the video, but love the background music more. How hot was it in Miami that day? In Australia, we had 114 F a few weeks ago.
First attainable mid-engined sports car was the FIAT x1/9; imported to the US in 1974. The 1st gen MR2 was pretty much a copy of it.
Good video!!!! And good content looking forward to the next one in regards to this car :)
Old news.. Us boys have been talking about this car for 30 years now.
I own a 1991 Toyota MR2 that has over 135,000 miles on it and I LOVE IT and here's the funny part she's a non-turbo but it has everything that the turbo has on it and I almost have everything replaced on her that has either broke or cracked.
Looking forward for some videos on that car!
Was my first car when i turned 16. Loved the car was very twitchy especially for someone that just learned to drive. Had to sell it when my family grew. Still hope to get one at some point.
I feel like Tavarish just sees an old car and buys it without thinking when he's busy.
Why haven't I found you sooner? Super awesome. +1 sub.
This is going to be a great project. Can't wait to see the finished result
I had a 1986 MR2 that I built up...and it spanked the crap out of all those little Honda-bois and their coffeecanned Civics. It felt like it was a slot car and was a total blast to drive!
Awesome job I really look forward to videos.
Looking forward for the next video bro I can't wait to see that MR2 fully restored
Hey man stay safe in the storm!
As someone who semi-dailies the MR2's cousin car(a certain AWD Celica model), this definitely has piqued my interest. I'm definitely wanting to see where you take this!
