    Go figure, it was raining cats and dogs in New Zealand while we were there. I couldn't salvage the audio from our boom mic so I had to use the Rode mic mounted to my phone. It clicks here and there when we're moving it around, but this was the best I could get. Hope you guys dig it. Thanks!

    As someone from Europe I finally feel at home in this Q&A. Weights in kg, height in cm, amount of milk in litres. Although 3.7LOMAD doesn't nearly sound as good as GOMAD.

      Thank you, I really don't like wasting my time on stuff I am not interested in/know already and this simply helps a lot.

    Totally agree with the cardio response. Too many strength coaches are dogmatic and think cardio is gonna detract severely from strength training adaptation when in fact if it's progressively induced and low stress it might actually help the athlete, not only to improve work capacity and health markers, but also to recover after a training session itself. Reasearch shown (and I've also experienced it) that 15min low intensity cardio after the strength session resulted in better recovery. Great video Jordan, as usual. Keep it up!

      Yea I don't know if there's good data showing "better recovery" as verified by objective performances in the short term, but long term it definitely needs to be developed.

      Most people watching this video aren't competing in anything, they just want to get stronger. If you're resting 3 to 5 min between your 5 rep sets, that doesn't count as cardio. It probably won't help your strength any but the reason people should do cardio is that it's good for your heart. You're not going to get a low resting pulse from lifting heavy with long breaks in between sets.

    Great timing on this for me. I have a prior L4,L5,s1 injury, with residual drop foot in my left leg, I recently switched into a gvt program that I wanted to run for approximately 2 months before going back to a Hepburn power building style of program I was running. I went light on my gvt lifts and last week tweaked my low back on the right side this time while deadlifting after squats. Had finished 10x10 set of squats at 140 lbs, then went into 140 lb deadlift for same. In set 3 back tweaked at rep 7 (definitely memorable in a bad way.). I am a cop who works 12 hour shifts and average 7 work days out of 14. My work days I lift before work generally, so I am moving, but still sit a lot in the patrol car (which have all gotten smaller since I started 11 years ago.). Three weeks ago, I was deadlifting 320lbs for 8 sets of 3, then following it with 240lb reps for 4 sets up to 10 reps. Then I lower weight and it tweaked. It has been 8 years since my original injury, and I have lifted fine since then. This video has me confident to go back in and get working squats and deadlifts again. I will take it easy on the weights to start but am not going to do the gvt program. Heavier makes me think about form and safety more and I don't plow through the reps trying to get work out in before I have to shower and leave for my shift. Great job, was introduced to you by watching a seminar posted on Alan Thrall channel. Great information Barbell medicine puts out. If I can ever fully grasp rpe without ego lifting or under doing it, I will try the program Barbell medicine posted in its newsletter a couple of months ago. For anyone who read this and wonders why a 225lb guy only deadlifts in the 350's for a max, I was stupid and stuck in bro land and ignored legs and back for many years, if only I had found a good example, coach or mentor earlier....

      dude that's way too much volume on deadlifts. you're accumulating a ton of fatigue for zero extra benefits over just doing squats and rows to build it, while deadlifting once a week at relatively low volume just to practice the movement pattern and express your strength gains

      Thanks for the reply. I am lowering the amount of deadlifts and definitely will be upping my rowing and get back to pull ups as well (my bar got taken down outside for a patio area last summer and I have not had a chance due to the cold to find a new place to put my 6x6 posts back in the ground)

    everyone should do some sort of training towards the increase of their VO2 max. it doesn't need to be a lot. if you just add some weighted carries for time/low rest intervals/sled/prowler work, etc, maybe some strongman medleys into your strength work, you will feel better just in day to day life.

    As novice I went from 180 to 210 - early twenties- at 6'2 (nothing to brag I know). After a couple of months of strength training, I went on a trekking trip and I was getting out of breath. That's just my little story, I'll keep doing my cardio going forward.

    They're right about not being too fearful of pain. And, generally, continuing to exercise is therapeutic. But imaging modalities provide gross assessments of pathology, and pain can arise for non-grossly appreciable reasons. Of course, that implies that the pathology is not that bad, hence should improve, and comports with our observations that, in fact, they do improve with continued training to tolerance. Medicine's premise that psychosocial reasons account for microscopic, i.e. non-grossly, appreciable lesions, may be wrong, unless, of course, the person over-reacts to the painful lesion. The psychosocial explanation may just be a waste-basket hypothesis to explain MRI inappreciable lesions.

    You mentioned that NSAIDs don't effect tendon healing. I've heard that chronic use of NSAIDs or even lots of ice baths can effect hypertrophy gains overtime because reducing inflammation and swelling has as a small effect on protein synthesis. Is there any truth to that?

    Jordan, if you're going to deadlift in lifting shoes, get some Adidas Crazy Power's. They're easily the lightest, most well rounded lifting shoes out there (in my opinion). Better shoes than Adipowers and Power Perfects for deadlifting. Heal height is similar to the Powerlifts, but the Crazy Powers are a more functional shoe in my opinion. Just my advice... Not that you need it. ;)

    Hi Jordan, regarding 8 metabolic equivalents, you mentioned 4 to 5 flights of stairs as good gauge of this. Just wanted to clarify how many stairs in 1 flight? 16 to 20 stairs?

    If GOMAD is not appropriate for older people (I am 37 yo, 75 kilos and I drink 1 litter of milk per day), then does this mean that the same rule applies for big quantities of food? Is the problem the many calories or something more specific that has to do with milk and the way it adds to body-weight?

    Jordan so you tell the 181cm guy to bulk up to 100kg, but you're 178cm (as far as I remember) and you compete at 90kg - what are your reasons for not gaining more weight?

      Barkotek I’ve been > 100kg before. I also don’t think the benefits outweigh the risks of gaining weight for me at this point in my life.

    I’m so sick of hearing different shit from people about tendinitis
    Ibuprofen won’t hurt it
    Ibuprofen will hurt it and causes other problems
    Sick of it, it took me 3 months to be able to squat without knee pain

    @ 2:12 he literally says ‘being a woman is a cause of low back pain’. This is the third video in which I heard Mr JF make random comments on women. So wrong, in so many ways. I just say: really strong men will make women stronger, weak spirited men will find ways (more or less subtle) of confirming women in their perceived ‘inherent weaknesses’. As a female powerlifter I surround me of people who make me stronger not weaker. Hence, I am unsubscribing right now.

      Thanks josh for your reply. To me it is not about gender it is about training level. If you are untrained, you will be more prone to back pain. Hence, train more and smarter to get your back stronger ;-). Once it is strong, you can enjoy lifting (regardless if you are a male or female trainee).
