    Just want to ‘weigh in’ with a personal story about squatting with hip replacements. I believe the components of hip replacements are more variable than those of knee replacements. For knees, the articular surfaces are metal against metal, no softer materials - correct me if I’m wrong. With hips, many people including myself have metal or ceramic heads articulating against a polymer cup. While attempting to squat to parallel with 225 lbs (a sub maximal load) the head of the prosthetic tore the anterior surface of the polymer cup and popped out, ie dislocated. I had to have revision surgery. I now only go ‘heavy’ using a trap bar off of the ground to prevent myself from over-flexing the hip joint. Belt squats are pretty good to as I can sit back into the squat. I’m only telling you this as it may help you to select movements that are doable and safer for hipsters like me. Obviously you will need to find out what type of materials are used in the hip replacement, assess squat form for amount of hip flexion (upright versus leaning forward posture), etc. Just saying …

    Great editing and content. My grandmother is facing a knee replacement and really wish she would be open to these ideas as she is still more active than her peers for her age even prior to the knee replacement and future back surgery.

    Yeah, I totally agree about Ed Coan and his hips. Like stated here, dude squatted 660 for a set of five. Given the statistics on people and what they'll be able to squat in their lifetime, it's also my unprofessional opinion that 99.99% of people will be fine to squat after a hip replacement.

    Hi Jordan, Off topic but I hope you can help: When strength training under severe time constraints are there any significant reasons I shouldn’t intersperse lifts (say squats and OHP) so that I can maintain a longish rest period between sets of the same movements (say 7 minutes between one set of squats and the next) but relatively short rest periods between a set of squats and the next set of OHP? I’m sure you get it, but my aim here is to do more heavy work in less time while still allowing the necessary recovery to allow heavy efforts. Thanks. James

    Friend of mine had lymph nodes removed from her arm a while back. Doctor said she can "exercise" as long as she "works up to it". Can she do Press, Squat, and Deadlift as long as she wears her sleeve/glove?

      Hard to say from here, but the risk of her training with barbells is likely outweighed by the benefit. Though I am not her doctor and could not say for sure.

    What do you think of 1 peak set training for an advanced lifter? Hitting a 1-5rm then a few back of sets for volume

    hi, i have question as well. i'm still a novice but can't make progress on every workout anymore. i'm not sure what the reason is though, but the weights i'm lifting are definitely in the novice-range. will i make progress by switching to higher volume already, or will this make me stall even more? in other words, will an intermediate program help a novice that stalls on a novice program?

      thanks, but i've read this article several times. thats why i'm saying "i dont know the reason". a SS-coach probably would know what i'm doing wrong, but i cant afford one and dont have that indepth knowledge myself :) so now i'm wondering if switching to intermediate would get me out of my stall, or fuck things up even more

      Art Vandelay If you can’t add weight to the bar every workout, then you are not a novice by definition. Every ends their LP at different spots. Some end in the low to mid 200s for squat and others are in the 400s. It all depends on age, genetics, how much weight you’ve gained etc...

    In regard to adding volume for older lifters ... I read "The Barbell Prescription: Strength Training for Life After 40" by Jonathon Sullivan and Andy Baker. It proposes that volume is the enemy of older lifters, while intensity is the friend of older lifters. This approach has been helping me regain some lost strength. I've been doing the Texas Method, and it seems to be helpful to sometimes do 4x5 instead of 5x5 on volume day. I seem to feel more recovered by intensity day. Are you suggesting that I will eventually need to add less intense volume? Is there a reconciliation between the recommendations in this book, and your recommendations in this Q&A? Thank you

    What do you suggest for an older trainee who gets to the point where they're happy with their strength, appearance, and health parameters and just wants to maintain?

      Im assuming you mean an 'intermediate older guy'. Okay. So.. No one stays satisfied though, they tend to add up atleast 5-10 pounds on the bar every month. But if they want to stop and maintain, the body will soon adapt to that stress and won't help them to get stronger or otherwise

      Do each lift with the same weights about once per week and eat enough to maintain. That's my understanding and if I'm not mistaken Rip maintains by deadlifting every 1 to 2 weeks for example (I think in the 500-600 lb range?).
