Spider-Man (2018) Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 338

- Believe it or not, the very first non-mainline episode of Sacred Symbols back in September of 2018 was dedicated to Insomniac's smash-hit PS4-turned-PS5-and-PC game Spider-Man. We were only 10 or so episodes into the main show, Sacred+ didn't even remotely exist yet, and that episode quietly lives here on Patreon still, yes, but buried in the annals of Last Stand past. As such, and in commemoration of Spider-Man 2's imminent launch on PlayStation 5, I (Colin) thought I'd sit down with my brother Dagan -- a newbie to all things Insomniac Spider-Man -- for a trio of episodes of +. This is the first of the bunch, a deep dive into the original game that spawned some meaty DLC packs (which we'll cover in episode two) and an interstitial game that launched alongside PlayStation 5 (which we'll cover in episode three). That makes October a very webby month, which I guess makes some sense, all things considered. So take a trip to NYC with us, where we find a 20-something Peter Parker in yet another sticky situation...

As someone who loved using the gadgets i was shocked to hear they were mostly ignored by the boys. The web bomb was so overpowered. Especially during the crimes. Whether it be down an alley or in a store, shoot two bombs in there and boom the encounter is over cause all the enemies were stuck to walls lol
As someone who replayed Spider-Man on PS5 and completed all DLC's I can't wait for this episode. Also Black Cat 👀

I played a ton of this original spider-man, and currently 20 hours in on Spider-Man 2. I can't imagine doing combat like how Colin is describing. Mixing it up with the different tech abilities, the different powers. That's half the fun. Continuing to mix things up and move, that's the key to succeeding in combat. The punching, the zip to enemy ability, those are just a few tools you should be using. I also like how the abilities and powers are mapped to the shoulder buttons, it gives the combat the same feel as Ragnarok somewhat.
Also, doing stealth takedowns is underrated in these games. I'm really loving using stealth in Spider-Man 2. Leaping around to different Ledges or walls from up on high. And it will tell you if a person is safe to stealth attack. I love webbing them up and hanging them from lights, or webbing them to walls. I always try to stealth takedown entire camps, and it's pretty gratifying when you take everyone out without ever having being seen.
There's no incentive to stealth which is why I never did it. I had way more fun going in guns blazing, but i like how they DO give you the option to stealth. There's really just no incentive outside of the self gratification.
MJ in the original Spider-Man looked great. But she looks completely different in Spider-Man 2, and I have no idea why they changed her looks for the worse. She looked perfect in the original Spider-Man

Great episode per usual but you guys forgot to talk about aunt may. I was surprised by the ending, so I was curious what you guys thought about it.

They mention Aunt May a second before they talk about MJ, but then I guess they never go back to it? That’s disappointing (I’m still listening). Guess it didn’t really move them or make an impression that much.
Colin didn't see that scene since they filmed before he finished the fight with doc oc. That is disappointing because aunt may scene was really good and I was surprised they killed her off so soon.
We freeloaders got a triple helping of Dagan this week! Complete with some Dagan on Dustin action, to finish up the new constellation episode. Embarrassment of riches!

I like to play the game similarly to how Colin does. I like to sort of drip seed myself main in Spider-Man 2, but then go explore and do side contents etc for a while. There is just too much to see and experience in this amazing world that Insomniac have created, to just golden path the game. Hell I'm changing outfits on either Peter or miles like every freaking minute haha

Why didn’t Dagan play the best version on PC?
1:25:00 I think the reason that many of the older comic book characters don't kill is because of the Comics Code in 1954. Parents were freaking out about the popularity of comics and some of them were depicting crazy stuff, for the time. They actually had senate meetings about it and the solution ended up being a sort of "code of conduct" on how comics would be made and what they would depict. I believe some of the restrictions were that they wouldn't show exactly how crimes were committed and govt officials, judges and the like would be shown respectfully. With all of that they really dialed back the violence especially when it came to the protagonists. People forget it now but Batman used to carry a gun and he killed people in his earliest comics. I also think people have romanticized the heroes not having to resort to killing so they just perpetuate it for a lot of the most established characters.
Interesting history on the senate meetings! Reminds me of the Mortal Kombat panic and subsequent congressional hearings of the 90s
Them talking about Spiderman not holding back and letting lose makes me think they should read the book when Spidey goes full force on kingpen and almost beats him to death OR when Doc Ock takes over Spideys body and he realizes that every fight ever spiderman has pulled his punches

This will be cool to hear. I really enjoyed playing this on PS4 pro at launch. And I'm also glad I didn't play Miles morales, because I think that's making Spider-Man 2 feel a lot more fresh to me. Spider-Man 2 is tied with Resident Evil 4, for my game of the year.
Zero Dawn is good. Forbidden west is good. They aren’t nearly as good as Colin pretends they are.

To be fair Colin is not the only one who think that Horizon is better than good the first game got 89 on metacritic and the second game got an 88 and both games nominated for game of the year so its easy to say that the franchise is more than good that you make it out to be.Critics,Sales prove that its more than good not better than any other playstation games but its way more than just good
I'm definitely in the camp that thinks Zero Dawn is Playstation's best game. Forbidden West isn't as interesting and the cliffhanger at the end feels a bit too similar to the first game. Still an 8/10 though.
Maybe I'm a sucker for this particular brand of Sci-Fi, but the world and story remind me so much of some of my favorite things growing up, like Bionicle and Lost. The intrigue is just so good. Gameplay feels great too.

@@Stonehorn Like i said regardless of how you feel and what you believe if you want to believe that its just a Ubisoft games its fine and if you want to assume that most gamers don’t regard horizon as great its fine too but you cant change the fact that a new ip got an 89 on metacritic and it sold 15 million copies no other Ubisoft games even sell that and nominated for game of the year and compared to Legend Of Zelda Breath of the wild and the sequel got 88 on metacritic and it nominated again for game of the year for the second time.And if you want to disregard game of the year nomination its your choice buddy but i am talking facts here. You cant ignored of the success of Horizon franchise critically wise,Sales wise and nomination wise just because you believe what you want to believe.The game didnt sold 15 million copies if its an average game stop being dumb dude
I’m replaying the first one now and while I’m playing I can’t help but feel like 2 will be such a huge improvement over the little things in 1. I think it’ll be hard to go back to 1 afterwards.
Colin 9.99 a month for a sports game would be doubling the price from last gen if ur only buying it once a year. Like the idea but not the price point

I liked it when it first came out, but replaying it this year I couldn't finish it. Too much paddiing and MJ/Miles sections.
Mary Jane Watson is a bombshell model in the comics. It is 100 percent true that she was way out of his league. That was the dynamic. Insomniac, like many of the new generation of blue-haired comic writers, clearly were not a fan of this dynamic and rewrote her to be more in line with their vision for the character.
If you like that, it's totally fine. I'm just baffled why we need to pretend that wasn't a decision that was made at some point by the writers at insomniac. It shouldn't be a point of contention.
There's no "pretending"... many of the folks who are acting like there's something wrong with how MJ looks in the game would be over the moon if someone looking like MJ was interested in them in real life. So no, we aren't pretending anything, I think that MJ is attractive even as someone who's not into red heads

I’m pretty sure the conversation restarting thing is from Rockstar. I seem to remember that happening in Red Dead 1 and maybe even in GTA 4.
Today we see Colin struggle with the fact that Spider-Man is based on comic book logic. Of course they’re not going to show you actually KILLING people in a spider man game lol. That’s just the way comic book world works.
It’s not supposed to be some super grounded and gritty take on crime lol. That said, I’d love an R rated version of all super hero stories (I guess that’s what The Boys is).

On the mj comments idk whos making them but what ive seen isnt that every female needs to be sexualized its just that they seem to go out of their way to make them less cute or sexy than previous versions of multiple female characters across lots of media

1:19:55 She’s certainly not ugly here but she’s certainly not the MJ we grew up with. Rather than a beautiful supermodel, she’s been, let’s say, modernized. Not quite the bombshell, she has this need to get involved in dangerous waters better left to Spidey, etc.
I think this spoiler cast could have used Chris or someone else with a bit more Spider-Man knowledge.
Colin, ease up on the Horizon stuff. It’s not THAT good lol. I couldn’t even finish either one because the story made me lose interest. Mechanics are solid and the world is somewhat interesting but you act like it’s one of the GOATS. SM1 and 2 are WAY better.
I love Horizon, one of my favorite IPs, but FW actually was very predictable, story wise, from a high level. The story is just not anywhere as good as ZD, and I can't let people pretending it was slide by.
Spiderman definitely road the wave of the popularity of the Daredevil series. It didn't have as much wokeness on its face but definitely has identity politics. SM2 definitely goes FULL Sweet Baby, Inc. Cultural Marxism ruins everything.
There's nothing wrong with how MJ looks. What I find funny, is in real life I've seen guys go out of their way for women that look just like MJ in the game. If someone looking like MJ was interested in these folks, they would have a completely different tune in RL
Oddly enough I did (mostly) predict where Horizon Forbidden West's story was going to go.
on this episode and sacred symbols regular... the complaints about indoors, playing as other characters, the lab segments... some people want more than a one trick pony. so in every game do you want one character and limited gameplay? I disagree. I hope that these segments are in spider-man 2 and expanded on even more.
I think the different gadgets greatly increased combat by allowing a variety of ways to defeat enemies and varying the degree of combat difficulty.
at no point were any of the indoor sections limiting in combat. the indoor sections were all created with vastly unrealistic ceiling heights. I was frequently web swinging and point launching indoors.

Yeah I don’t get the hate for the indoor sections. You’re usually crawling on ceilings and stealthing around. They do this ESPECIALLY well in Miles Morales and it’s never an issue as far as combat/movement.
I gotta disagree with you I think Spider-Man is above Horizon and on the same level as God Of War. Better in some ways while worse in others but of the caliber.
Thinking of doing all those puzzles alone makes me not want to replay. I wish you could just toggle those off, and/skip the MJ missions. The padding certainly takes away form the game itself imo.

2 is so insanely bad. The writing is shockingly poor, and it’s clear that the creators cared more about their political messaging than making good content. You could swap all of the woke stuff out for Trump stuff and it’d still be horrible. They truly butchered Miles, and all of the potential this series had.
You're being overly disingenuous. The story was serviceable even with whatever "woke" stuff that was in it.
@@tylerwagner1978 not at all. First of all the writers went with message over content. It was genuinely boring. Second, there was no consistency. Things that were established early in the game were forgotten. Venom is a hivemind, but their final plan involves distracting venom from the base while the others attack? It is established that the symbiote makes people act weird and say bad things, but 5 minutes after Peter gets it off he’s acting all shocked that symbiote controlled Mary-Jane is saying terrible things and he’s all hurt? Then later on Miles does the same thing when Harry is being mean to him? How about the fact that they know sound is the symbiotes weakness but they do NOTHING with that knowledge. The writing is terrible.
@@Michael-rv5ib They make a point to show that Venom wants Peter to join him and the hivemimd to "heal the world" so that's why he chased Peter away from thr hive. And they do take the noise thing into account because Peter amd Miles make the gadget that uses noise to stun the symbiotes.
@@tylerwagner1978 no they used plot convenience to make it so exactly when the writers wanted Venom to, he became aware of the attack on the “base” and he went back. Lazy, poor writing at its finest.

MJ and Aunt May were both terrible in this game and nothing like their comic counterparts. Mister Negative Filter is also a terrible villain. Villain designs also sucked and were generic "modern" redesigns inspired by the latest slop modern Spider-Man comics. Mediocre "Arkham" combat and non-physics based swinging all come together to make a highly overrated game!
After the graphics I personally feel forbidden west is more of the same open world formula. I feel there overrated.

After getting the plat on both Horizon games, i can honestly say they are extremely disappointing, overrated, and just plain sucks.
That doesn’t make sense. You wouldn’t have gotten the plat if you hated them.
