  • Last month, a long-awaited survival horror game launched on PS5 (and elsewhere) in the form of The Callisto Protocol. Led by Dead Space and Call of Duty veteran Glen Schofield's new studio Striking Distance, Callisto was at first envisioned as a project set in the PUBG universe. It ultimately found its way towards being something of its own, though, and the result has been undoubtedly divisive. Yet, we here at Last Stand Media kinda-sorta like this game, at least more than the general consensus, and we're here to say: Yes! The Callisto Protocol is deeply flawed, but also the beginning of something potentially awesome. It's -- as we say time and time again on this episode -- a title that's almost there. Indeed, it's akin to The Order: 1886. And in an environment rife with the same-ol' repetitive nonsense, than in and of itself is a notable feature.

So nobody read the tutorial that is shown on screen of how to dodge? Ben seems to have it right in his mind. There is NO timing. Only hold left or right and then alternate side for the next attack. The accessibility Colin mentions just allows you to hold one direction the entire time.

    • @joshfielder7898

Yea from what I can tell most people don't pay attention to tutorials on any game. So many times I've heard someone not understand how to do something and it was clearly explained in the tutorial

    • @HugoStiglitz88
      @HugoStiglitz88 Год назад +3

Exactly. It's hilarious how dumb some gamers are honestly. I've never had an easier time dodging in a game. I beat it on the hardest difficulty and the dodging was by far the easiest part

@@joshfielder7898 the game literally stops the game entirely only a couple times, 2 of em are to explain the dodging and they don't even let you immediately click off the tutorial either
I got zero sympathy for anyone who missed the basic ass explanation that even says in plain English, it's not about timing.
And again, they explain the dodging 2 separate times to make sure even dummies can't miss it. And yet some of em still missed it

I know I’m super late but the dodging discussion is so frustrating. Nobody reads? The game literally tells you there is no timing, all you have to do is alternate the direction of the stick or keybinging. You can be holding the direction all the way down until the visual of the dodge finishes 😅

I think Callisto Project is brilliant, a visual masterpiece. Would love a sequel. The story was a little lean, but love the world they created.

I had a good time with this game, there were some frustrations but never enough to make me not want to stop playing. The major frustration I had was a game breaking crash over and over when you are exploring the old colony in the elevator and it lasted for days until a patch. I think that really soured the game for me because when I came to the final boss I just couldn't be bothered to put the effort to finish it

  • @sprinter1boy

@colin, I agree with all you said apart from the game was £55 not 70 and the game has plenty of replayability ie; my 1st playthrough evenly upgraded everything, 2nd playthrough maxed out baton very early on with slight upgrades of a few weapons and 3rd playthrough maxed out glove very early on and maxed out pistol buying plenty of ammo at 3D printer on every occasion.
This made all 3 playthroughs feel very different with how I approached each enemy and sections.

This game was interesting. I personally liked it but also TOTALLY understand why someone wouldn't. It's the kind of game where it didn't blow me away but there's just enough there that I liked and that also brings me to the point where I'd really like to see a sequel. We've established some things, the visuals are a 10/10, the sound and atmosphere is a 10/10, etc. There's several aspects that are brilliant and that show that this development studio HAS talent so I'd really like to see them get another attempt at a sequel to hopefully show what they can really do with this IP. I think they deserve at least one more shot.

The strangest thing for me was I didn't like Callisto at all my first playthrough. Like Collin, I felt that it just missed the mark, which Dead Space Remake hits a 100 times over. However, I played it a second time right after my first playthrough and enjoyed it much more even though it still felt lacking compared to its predecessors. A sequel could go a long way to improving it because there are some strong aspects to it.

I was the same, maxed the glove very early on during my 2nd playthrough and maxed out the baton very early on during my 3rd playthrough but found some parts frustrating on my 1st playthrough as I unevenly upgraded everything half way up the weapon tree.

@@sprinter1boy Same here. Upgrading the glove and baton on my second run made the game so much better. Certain upgrades are essential to make the game more enjoyable and kinetic. It's a beginner's trap of sorts not knowing. My first run was miserable.

It's fascinating to see the divided opinions on this game. I personally gave it a pass, but watching different streamers and RUclipsrs play/review it, I saw a slightly different experience each time. Expectations matter a lot tbh - for those expecting a Dead Space/Resident Evil experience, they were disappointed, but those who went in more open-minded, they thought it was okay, but not great. Hopefully a sequel will hit the mark for everyone, if it ever happens.

The upgrade path was very important in this game, i had some frustrating moments with not maxing out the baton and glove on my 1st playthrough but 2nd and 3rd playthrough were a joy as I chose upgrades which suited my play style with the game like maxing out the glove and baton as early as I could.

I keep thinking the same thing! When I hear Chris talking about how reviewers trashed this game, it doesn't play out in the majority. Overall, most people thought it was...pretty good. A 7/10 usually means some people liked it a lot, some people liked it a little, and a few people (what Chris seems to be focusing on) didn't like it...

I think I liked this game more than most of the impressions and reviews I skimmed did. I thought the melee stuff was an interesting idea and the usage of environmental hazards with the Telekinesis glove was a lot of fun. It did definitely lose me in the second half, I thought the setting was really good when it was centralized to the prison and substantially less interesting in the other parts of Calisto. I feel like it brought it back by the end though.

The people who think this game is "underrated" is due to them liking the genre and idea more than the execution itself. The combat and stealth sections are so simplistic and the story, characters and world are all generic too. It's everything thats wrong with AAA gaming in terms of spending money on art, Hollywood actors and visuals instead of gameplay and level design. 6/10

The lie was p,ayers asking for more thus why they were selling them since no one had even played the game but select press outlets so how would players be requesting more when they had not even seen the ones that were not left out to be sold later?
Maybe Lie is harsh. Obviously being untruthful to justify charging for them while trying to diffuse how gross it seemed to he received by the community would have been more accurate but more words.
Don’t even get me started on his flex tweet about how great it was to be in full crunch and then trying to backtrack and pretend that was not actually going on. My years in the industry tells me he was being truthful in the first treat and was doing damage control in the second with half truths or not truths.
I am just glad that people whose opinions I trust have assured me that the game is nothing special at all and can safely be skipped.
