- Recently, I (Colin) sat down and did something unusual: I played through all of Forspoken. As you likely already know, Forspoken came out this past January as a PS5 console exclusive, and it didn't exactly light the world afire. In fact, it's thoroughly mediocre, a surprise considering the pedigree of both its publisher and developer. But that's kind of the point. Everything these days seems to be the best-of-all-time or the worst-thing-ever, with no in between. But it's in between that Forspoken very comfortably rests. It's a game for young adults -- specifically girls -- and games critics and the outspoken industry-types aren't exactly its core audience. I'm not either. But I wanted to give it a chance, and I have a lot to say about it. Coincidentally, so does Gene Park, who reviewed the game at The Washington Post and originally pitched me on the idea of sitting down to talk about it. So we did just that. Fun to play but trite in its delivery, Forspoken may just surprise you for reasons you've not yet considered.

Colin gets mad respect from me for playing games that aren't "mainstream" bc I do the same and alot of people are missing out. If you want different types of games, play different types of games.

I actually really wanted to pick this up. Had it preordered with steelbook and everything……… AND THEN they released the story trailer and she opened her mouth 🤦🏻♂️ Immediately felt like my scrotum was dragging on asphalt every time she talked. Preorder cancelled.
Gene, I read your review 😂. I bought the game after reading it. I fell off of it momentarily, but I’m looking forward to getting back to it after listening to this.
Glad to hear/see this review. Weird timing where I was really excited to play this game ever since it was revealed. Just looked like my type of game with the magic combat. I played it at launch but sort of rushed through the main story and played it quickly because I wanted to finish it before a vacation I had planned and since Hogwarts legacy was coming out right when I was getting back from said vacation.
I came back to forespoken after the dlc came out since I preordered the deluxe edition and realized I just liked playing the game. Most games for me at some point become more of a chore, but this game for whatever reason was just fun to keep playing. I ended up platinuming it despite the daunting task of upgrading all of the spells. But tbh I liked upgrading the spells and wish I made more traction on these upgrades during the early/mid game because the upgrades are really useful. Especially for the movement abilities that lower the amount of stamina they use.
While I agree that there is probably too many options for abilities/combat, but when you strategically go in and upgrade one magic type at a time and really learn the ins and outs of each magic you start to get some favorite abilities and which combos work best and it was nice to feel like an expert on what you like to use because everything is pretty viable. I also changed the game to easy after the story which gave a bit more freedom on which magic types I used and less dependent on paying attention to which enemies are weak to what.
Lastly theres just something about finding a huge hoard of break zombies and having several options to completely annihilate a huge portion of those hoards.
Something about the way Colin podcasts makes it very easy to listen even if you haven’t experienced the topic, I have great memories of playing minecraft and listening to episodes of knockback back to back many of which I had no clue about like the goonies episode
With the way you guys talked about this, how did it get an 8 ? I know scores arn't the best way to capture the nuances of a game, but according to you guys everything is either flawed or poorly designed. I enjoyed the discussion, just found it jarring starting of with the knowledge of that score and the discourse afterwards in no way lined up with it

This is a case where I disagree with Colin. This game is awful. I think it’s legit terrible.
Also, the graphical downgrade from the reveal trailer is stunning. The reveal trailer looked like the UE5 demo, the actual game looks like a mid PS4 title
What makes the game so bad? I feel like the gameplay is strong enough to have a good time, which is good for me

It’s interesting Gene likes magic-based games and holds FF15 so highly. One of the reasons FF15 doesn’t resemble FF to me is how little you needed to use magic in that game
No magic, no gear, no impactful character progression, no story, no controllable Summons, no interesting characters... Lol.
This game is an absolute mess. Very, very underwhelming

Just beat Forspoken and hear to listen to the spoilercast now.
Got it for 10e and I think it was aorth it at that price. A little better than expected.
The last 3 hours seriously dragged going from crystal to get new story pieces before the final showdown and the twist I saw coming from a mile away.
I didn't even play Forspoken, and probably will never will, but I just wanted to watch.
Back in the 80s and 90s some game developers purposefully made games very difficult/sometimes impossible to solve/play the whole game.withour buying a guide. That was their monetization after a sale. Just an interesting fact.
Final fantasy 16 also feels like the sword doesn’t have any weight. Enemies barely react to being a cut . Surprised he doesn’t mind it on 16 but does for this game

Gene’s review and Boomstick Gaming’s combat videos are what made me pick up Forspoken at full price. I had an enjoyable time with it and got right to the last boss fight and didn’t even finish it. Just decided I was done. It was cool, the magic parkour is seriously awesome, story is meh but not awful or good, I played it for about 25 hours and had my fill.
I feel like if you had listened to him here, you would have been dissuaded from getting the game, doesnt really say anything enticing
that you bought it at full price and yet have such a milquetoast opinion on it means you got suckered and are just coping

I can’t wait for the Final Fantasy 16 podcast, because I have some mixed feelings on that game. Where as all of the Sacred Symbols crew loves it.
If Theatrhythm didn't come out after it , I'd have totally platted Forspoken . Loved the combat.
Octopath 2 was open world, change my mind.
Currently cleaning up trophies in Forspoken and been excited for this ever since you mentioned it. Honestly no clue how you both are going to fee about this enigma of a game haha
speaking of stereotyping asians by the accents in english- what do you think we swedes think whenever americans does a "swedish" or viking accent in tv shows - it always german, for some reason we speak german suddenly, its dumb names like "helga" etc. I mean, yet people think that works. I even had an american who thought Sweden was famous for its mountains and chocolates. I tried to explain that was swiss you know switzerland, and he didnt even know that was a country, he thought it was a cheese.
Forspoken The voice acting and dialogue is just. Erghh 😂
I platinum Forspoken and completed the DLC. Worth picking it up. Its very cheap now. Its the Avatar game I wanted the way she cast magic and be fluid it with it.
This was great, you should do more spoilercasts for bad games like this one.👍
They only Stan for this game because it’s a Square Enix title. If this was made by an Xbox studio they would trash it .

Great conversation guys. I disagree Ghostwire is better than Forspoken, having played both back to back I enjoyed Forspoken far more and sunk 60 hours in it hoping to get the Platinum, but that trophy about upgrading all your magic its such a drag that I abandoned it halfway through and left the game at 97% progress for the plat. It is clear this game didn't need to be open world, by the time you finish the main story you have only explored like 20% at most of the map at best. Its such an empty space with nothing interesting to do besides the same thing over an over. It all feels disjointed and its sad because it has some stuff really well done, traversal is pretty fun and the story has some cool concepts tho poorly executed. A 70 score as Gene said its a fair score for this game. I also think the overhype and the fact that it was a exclusive PS5 game set expectations to high for its own good.
i tried ghostwire with ps plus and gave up after like an hour or two, its not good at all. Forspoken was great though

I played the game and gave up after the cuff twist.
My bet is 1 in 1000 people who watch this played this game. And 1 in 100 of those people finished this game. But It's literally a better game than.the average game if you include the many trophy/achievement far, and garbage games released that nobody knows or hear about. People either forget or are ignorant of gaming decades ago
Redfall is ok? Comparing it to Forspoken? Really?
Saying you "doubt" it's that bad means you never played it.
One had really bad AI and the other didn't.
One ran 60fps and the other didn't.
