Dave Sparks has struck Gold with Allan! I hope he's paying him well because he's worth every cent plus some! Allan literally knows something about everything. Its actually surprising how well Allan is on camera for as excentric as he is. Big Allan fan here!!
I’m a, computer network, technician entrepreneur for decades, and I’m extremely analytical in problem-solving, and usually do very well. What an honor to listen to Alan “teach me”.. I laughed at the time that when the parents were gone, I pulled the Briggs & Stratton engine off of our lawnmower and bolted it to floor to ceiling window frame in our new addition that was be in no built on the house. Then, I pulled off the back because I wanted to “ see how it worked”. The second I started it up and the oil was sprayed onto the concrete inside the house, after I had “ killed” the engine I looked in amazement at the perfect “oil spray pattern, then looked inside the engine and decided I was done with the self-taught lesson” and decided I was done for the day. Put some oil dry on the concrete, swept everything up, put some more oil in the engine and tested it. “Class dismissed”. Alan strikes me as that type of a guy when he was younger. I’m blown away by his knowledge about everything mechanical. Please keep posting his videos. He’s a great addition to the team… I learn a lot from him “ without starting an oil fire” 😉🤣
I am not a mechanic, but Allan patiently explains what he is doing, and this makes it interesting for me to watch what he is doing, and his explanations seem to make sense to me.
And I trying to be a mechanic, but Allan is making sure that I also understands it and even helping me to remember what routes to try to get something started
LOL you need to get out more. There's tens of thousands that do the same. In other countries they do all the same things on the side of a cliff hanging upside by their testicles while wearing flipflops and no tools but an ice pick
I don't make many comments but I just want to say that Alan is such an asset. His deductive reasoning in making repairs is how all mechanics should work. In a day when "mechanics" usually just swap out parts this guy actually fixes things, He readily admitted that his knowledge of these systems was limited but he made a piece of scrap metal into a valuable asset that you guys really need in that yard.
What is it about Alans personality that is so appealing to watch? He's just real, no fakeness at all. I really enjoy when he is processing to problem solve.
Alan, you're a genius! I love watching your mind work. You make do with what you have as much as you can rather than just replacing a bunch of parts Very old school.
I really enjoy watching this kind of videos where Alan explains and shows how stuff works. This is better than formal education. Keep doing what you are doing Alan, nice job.
Don't forget, the engine pulley is 4 times bigger than the alternator pulley, so the alternator spins 4 times faster. Looks like you have a useful FLT there, once the oil spill is fixed.
I have one question, where did Alan get all his knowledge from? Was it the jobs he’s had or college/trade school? He certainly is a Wizard, awesome! Love love love his videos!!!
I've always said, "any supposed mechanic who does not have a good selection of hammers is no mechanic." Alan, you definitely qualify. And, you are fun to watch figure out what's needed. Another qualification of a good mechanic.
Watching makes me wish I was twenty years younger because you guys need a real diesel mechanic. I do enjoy watching your struggles though. Keep on Truckin Alan.
I have watched sooo many Bus Grease Monkey episodes that I was yelling at the screen "The governor is not broken, an injector is stuck!" I was also glad that the injector was not stuck in the full flow position. I have never been able to work on one of these Detroit Diesels personally however this was a first for me. Watching Allan work on one and having learned to diagnose the problem from another content creator. RUclips is Wizzard!
Alen the rack you are rocking back and forth is the injectors rack .Never ever start a Detroit without pulling the valve cover off and making sure NO injectors are stuck.the intake flapper you were talking about earlier is just in case an injector was stuck. OPEN, you can shut all the air off from the intake and kill the motor. Without this, it will run away, and there is nothing you can do to shut the air off it will run full throttle and BLOW THE MOTOR .You're just lucky your fuel problem probably was your life savor on that motor.First thing I do is first secure a way to cut off the intake air ,like a big flat piece of plywood to cover the intake to cut off the air on any diesel engine this will save the motor if it runs away at full throttle. All Detroits, if you are setting anytime at all, you have to see if any injectors are stuck and rotate at least 2 complete rotations and look at all the injectors as the motor is turning by hand .Then you can try to start the engine.Gods favor was on your side on this one.If the air flapper is not free above the intake, just lose it up so you can flip it shut and keep it from running away.Everyone who runs that forklift should be informed how to keep the engine from running away. With the use of the factory flapper.
He got real lucky, with that Detroit. The governor is under that housing on the external linkage he said didn't appear to work and unhooked. If it would have taken off. Dave likely is building a new shop. They wouldn't haven't gotten it pulled out in time. Looks like a 3-53 Detroit.
Just to show you how long alternators have been around and they a basically still the same. The cars in those days had a plug from the car that would plug into the field. If they didn't have the plug we would wire them just like Allen is doing. and this was 55yrs ago. Boy what he is doing brings back memories.
I'm guessing one of the injectors was stuck preventing you from moving the rack. Chris managed to break it free releasing the rack. Stuck injectors are a common problem on 2-stroke Detroits that have sat for some time. I learned that from Bus Grease Monkey (Scott Crosby) here on the Tubes. Another masterful resurrection by the Wizard.
I work with a Italian company at my work who makes all our machines for retreading big truck tires. and at our shop in Maryland we have 3 machines that or one of a kind builds so when I call for parts the say the same thing wiggins said to you. Thank God that where I work they use a lot of the same parts for different things. I'm 53 will turn 54 in December and wish that company's that built test models had kept better paper work then actually transferred it to computer databases!!! Getting old sucks when you know that when stuff was made they knew but newer folks were to lazy to input complete records of builds!!!! GOD bless the Wizard Alan!!!!!
Hey Alan! Great to see you figured out that stuck governor cam. It's a common issue on these older Detroits. When you encounter your next one, make sure to check it before startup. It can be stuck at full throtle in the worst case. Just a little oil and some wiggle action and those cams will turn freely in no-time.
Just looking at the comments here gives me hope for humanity..and that there are people in the world who can relate to authentic characters like Allan..He seems to be living in the moment ,! and it is something precious to this world…
the wizard is an invaluable resource, every time I meet a person like this in life they are always under paid and under appreciated. I sure hope you guys are taking care of Alan.
Alan , excellent job of explaining your troubleshooting process , the vertical tube on the side of the Detroit 3-53 is the governor assembly . You are the true wizard !!!
Allen, I kept telling you from the beginning that it was a gm 10si alternator, but you wouldn't listen 😂. Most of your older equipment and tractors use a 10si or 12si alternator. Good work, buddy.
Give allen an old rusty Coke can, a battery + a old toothbrush, and he'll create you a terrace sweeper! He's the Wizz! Mc Guyver learned all he knew from Allen. Thank you for the lesson Sir!
Alan, you shoulda bought the made in USA Power Master (brand name) with the Built-In Regulator, Single Wire with the Small diameter pulley which artificially speeds up the alternator. 13.8 V guaranteed, no additional wiring etc. I bought the 140 amp which charges two batteries no problem, because my Suburban has two batteries AND two A/C units and now she charges AT Idle with ALL of the Silverado electrical stuff on full with zero probs! You'll never over-rev it either with just a fork lift. Live and learn like I did. Now You AND I know! Great Video Alan, love your stuff brother. May the Fortress be with you! lol
Man, we love Dave & what he's been able to do in his life, & with that said @ every turn, you find the man blessing others everyplace "hence Allen". The world sure could use more Dave Sparks in it I'll tell ya that! Mr Wizard we must see you in a cool truck with lift and all tools abord, you damn sure deserve it.
Most are aware that spinning a coil inside a magnet produces electricity, but as these alternators don't use a permanent magnet no power is generated until the electromagnet is powered, however it can't get any power until it is generated, catch 22!, hence no output until there is a way of electrically exiting that winding. Great video.
They'll be replacing it eventually or the new owner will. The voltage still needs to be regulated. You can't simply excite the field and leave it in constant this is how you kill the battery and eventually the alternator. Despite the graph (showing when full voltage is produced at higher rpm) the alternator still trickle charges at idle. You rev forklifts constantly when actually using them anyway, just like when he had it rev'd up to actually move less than a crawl on his test drive. Simply getting a Gen3 (more modern) architecture alt instead of this externally regulated 2G would have been the best upgrade. Looks like a 3G -1993 Econoline alternator that comes with the double pully would fit those common mounting ears. Or just add an external regulator to this one.
It only needs power when you first crank it. I had to either re up my 83 granpix but I put a momentarily push button so every time I started it just hit the button and it was charging 😊
Detroit 2 cycle engines are the best fuel to noise converters! Love to hear a screaming jimmy rev! BTW Allen, the injectors have a lever on them that can get jammed closed or open, it's what causes a runaway (when stuck open). Simply pull the injector out and clean out the lever's slot and work it until you get it free.
Slap a Delco 1 or 2 wire alternator on it and be happy.... Old iron had limited parts to choose from in the build stages, a dual groove pulley should be easy enough to come by.. 1st Edit: 36:19 Told you so... 2nd Edit 42:51 Spool valves that loose needs rebuilt along with the pump and a flush of the entire system to remove shavings / contaminants..

The wizard at work! The red idiot light on the dash of a vehicle was normally used to excite the alternator. I used to be a wizard too but age has taken its toll! I have forgot a lot of "stuff"
14:18 - Serious, you come to me with that shit? That's what Alan is thinking at that moment. 26:30 - Alan really. You named so often that shit missing alternator, haha. 35:06 - Alan that is MAGIC and you know it. 40:10 - Alan you know to get MAGIC out of all that you have put some little MAGIC in. - Alan you are my favorite of these whole series. You are like my grandpa. He teach me all that diesel and mechanic shit. I worked on real big machine in the mining system. I had a lot of work to hold all the machines running. - AT the end i can't wait for the next video on that machine.
am sure you have figured it out and done it already... but on that alternator... hook the R to an oil pressure switch. Enough Oil pressure will denote the engine has started and is running. happy BEFORE alternator gets excited.. That way the alternator is not putting drag on the engine during start up. Super helpful that way, for cold starts in cold weather.
