Fuel is dyed red because it hasn’t had highway use taxes paid on it. It’s for off road use only. Very high fines if you’re caught with it in a on highway vehicle.

9:37 I always thought the dye in off road diesel was because there's no road tax on it, and they can fine you if you use it in a regular truck, especially for hauling commercially, and/or non farm use.

I feel like Alan is kinda stuck at this point. He's super valuable but now he likely feels super indebted to Dave for all the building materials delivered and fire cleanup done on his compound. I really hope they throw him bonuses on the DL. If he's essentially making them $30k then he really should get a percentage of that just being 💯
I think he gets paid to work there, so he's just doing his job.
The flex hoses are more than likely the original hoses. My dad was a heavy equipment mechanic back in 60's and he taught me a few things. One thing he always told me was to check ALL the hoses and replace every one of them if the motor will stay running. If that still doesn't keep it running then you go and check any eletirtcal connections then replace the fuel pumps after you drain the tanks. Always try the eaziest first then on up to the main possible problem.Remeber you have a air powered parking brake. Good luck Alan
The new Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel is much more corrosive and will cause problems with rubber hoses and older O rings. Viton is an example of material now used on most new equipment.
I love watching people troubleshoot and chase down problems! I used to work for Schucks, which is now O'Reilly's, and I knew several mechanics who got blood poisoning from oils and chemicals leaching into their skin. PLEASE wear your PPE!!! Gloves, glasses and dust masks will keep you from having health issues down the road. The people who got sick didn't have the knowledge from back in the day, we know better now. I won't get into the stories I heard while working at a fire department about what happens when you don't wear PPE. We need you healthy so we can watch you do stupid sh!t down the road. 😉

Off Road Deisel is only to be used in off road vehicles or equipment because it is not taxed. It's red so the DOT officers in your state can identify it in your Tractor trailers fuel tank and give you a big ol ticket.
yeah, and those D.O.T. bears are about as friendly as a bobcat with an asshole full of sandspurs !!

Nice work, all good points, year and half ago I took on a dead 1974 5 ton, 465 Multifuel. Fuel System was rotten to the core. All Filters were Nasty, corroded, Canisters were totally rusted. Hot tanked the fuel tank and filter housings. Took the fuel pump inside the tank completely apart. It was totally gummed up with wax, which is in diesel. Cleaned it throughly. Decided to hold off on scattering the injector pump. Inspected and replaced and checked every thing. I think the fuel tank switch behind the seat might be part of the problem? Got an rebuilt injector pump. That is the next step.
If you have a machine to fix, Alan will fix it.

Allan has been a star ever since he was brought on the team.. not to mention everything hes been through.
A friend of mine bought a truck and while driving it home he stopped at the weigh station for inspection and they found off road diesel. If he hadn't had the purchase papers from less than an hour earlier he would have been fined $10,000 for using off road diesel on highway. He told the inspector that the seller had fueled the truck from the pump in his truck depot and my friend had no idea that the truck had the wrong fuel. The cop let him go but told him to remove any diesel from the tank when he got home. By the time he got home he had refueled that truck 4 times so there was no red diesel left in the tank.
Back in the day we would have troops who actually thought fuel gages on military vehicles were accurate and of course run out of fuel. To pressurize the system and get the air out we had old inter tubes that we cut up with the valve stems and put them over the tank and secure with a hose clamp and use the truck air to pressurize the system to prevent breaking all the lines loose. Normally we had it up and running in a couple min of filling the tank, also pressurizing the system we could spot additional leaks. I was a huge fan CTIS as well.
The size of that active wasp nest above Allen's head at around 10:28 in the cab of the truck would probably give Hans a heart attack if the one in the toolbox sketched him out lol but then again Hans don't have no wizard powers to keep him safe like Allen, so can you blame him for being cautious. 😂

@@lotharschiese8559lol true, but I mean everyone has their phobias I mean I'm 6 foot 5 250lbs not much concerns me but if I see a spider on or around me I'm shook until I know it's dead or gone. if it's anything bigger than a dime as far as I'm concerned it now owns my room, I know not very rational lol. the only bees that scare me though are white face hornets they are nasty monsters of a wasp from the yellow jacket family.

Had some strange issues with an M923A2 back in the Gulf War. Carefully inspect ALL the wires in, on, or near the parking brake and transfer case levers for breaks or shorts. It will cause the engine to cut off like I think I saw.
Picked-up a few good tips from Allan. Best one IMO was "Back-Blowing" the Fuel Line w/ Air Pressure, back to the Tank! This exposed the Old Neoprene Fuel Lines that were "Leaking through the Cracks"! Great Tip Allan! 👍
If he blew back with the cap ON the tank, he would have found the leaks? He missed this step in logic. If it can suck air, however small, it will piss if pressurized like the connection to an injector.

Though the risk of injecting compressed air into his skin whilst sealing the Tank neck with his hands is very dangerous and potentially lethal... Avoid doing it.....

I can't tell you what it is about Allen but I can tell you whenever he's in a video I enjoy it so much. Maybe because he's just down to earth, genuine, gets the job done and not afraid to get dirty doing it.
Dyed diesel is used for farm and construction equipment, it's the same as regular diesel, but the price doesn't include road tax. The dye is to tell if people are using the fuel on the highway, which is illegal.

Soooo... I have the same truck. Got it at government auction as a no start. Same problem, no fuel. The lines were cracked and sucking air. Had them rebuilt. Ran great for 5 years or so. Side note, I only use this truck very infrequently near Tucson. 5 years later, same problem. Lines cracked again. I paid the premium to have every rubber fuel line replaced with steel braided Teflon, especially the lines from the fuel tank selector valve It has never let me down since. Another side note I saw Allen trying to prime with the manuel primer. But it was missing the rubber boot. If that boot is gone the o-ring in the primer plunge is exposed. You can prime it up but quickly lose pressure. Same happened on mine and I replaced it. I have not had a problem since. As for the locked pumpkin, best of luck, mine worked
the locked pumpkin is gonna have to be torn down and replaced, because i have a feeling that the ring and pinion gears are fused/welded together and probably doesn’t have any gear oil in it

In England Red diesel is for agricultural use only, they put Red die in it so if they dip your tank they can tell.
It is illegal to use out side of agriculture.

Hans is acting as Dave's XO. He's keeping the balls in the air off-camera and making sure what Dave wants, gets done, then and there, in the manner Dave expects it to be done. So as any XO, he doesn't actually know many of the hands-on work. But he knows who to assign and when. And then, having given direction, let the CPO's and Specs get 'er done.
Allen is in this example a Master Chief Petty Officer.

Hello Dave. A little word of experience. A break/leak/tear/hole on the inside liner of fuel hose can shut an engine down 10 times quicker than a hole on the outside.

The red dye isn't for leak detecting. It is so they can fine the hell out of you for tax fraud if you run it on the road. It is literally the same fuel just a dye added at the storage tank when delivered.

What about dropping the diff oil and looking for sparkles in the oil?? diff centre lock or power divider issues? It's an awful lot of work to change the whole axle! Be sure to check the diff ratio is the same!

New Diesel is Ultra Low Sulphur 500ppm as compared to Older Diesel pre early 1990s, 2500ppm.
The New ULSD is proven to dry or shrink fuel lines and pump seals.
ULSD does not have the TORQUE as Old School 2500ppm.😊

Make sure you don’t use the red dye diesel in your on road vehicle. You will get a ticket if caught.

Wrong on the red dye fuel, it is untaxed farm fuel. Running in your on-road vehicle will get you a big fat fine. Nothing to do with finding/tracing a fuel leak..
Actually in Canada the red diesel is for farm use only and if you are caught on the road it’s a fine.

The Injector lines rail and injectors might be clogged or Injector pump what I recommend what works sometimes is fill up fuel filter with diesel cleaner to blowout any gunk

The military was using bio diesel for awhile. Hard on rubber and other things.
CTIS , central tire inflation system is the device on the rims . It allows the driver to deflate or inflate your tire for road use or off road use and I’m sure the wizard dude already knew this. I wanted to put that out there for anyone possibly wanting to kno exactly what it was . It’s definitely a awesome design and it works on all rims and tires .
yeah, but it can also be a real pain in the ass if it starts malfunctioning, because it will deadline the vehicle
Additive added to diesel is to insure you are paying the right price for your fuel. First is for use on the farm 2nd is marine and 3rd is for over-the-road trucking.

Red die is not taxed - off road diesel… regular diesel is taxed and is blueish clear… die has nothing to do with tracing leaks - its to tell if you payed tax on it or not.

Hydraulic oil like tellus is clear and has a volatility rate. She would run like a dream on it.

Great job Alan! Too bad they cut the video short, watching the axel swap would have rounded it out. I lost my Humvee in Saudi before going into Iraq. I chose an M939 as my ride. A little rougher ride, but it was dependable. Great vehicle.

I have a M925. Mine has the super singles. Cummings engine. IF DOT catches you running off road diesel in the truck they will really fine you big time. Be sure to check the gear ratio to see it matches on the replacement intermediate axel.
Luckily, they know that the EPA takes islands in exchange for large fines.

The red dyed fuel is NOT to better locate fuel leaks!
The red dye designates off road fuel, that has NOT had road tax paid on it. Thus it's off road fuel. It's meant to only be ran in equipment, like use in farming, mining, etc... that's isn't ran (primarily anyway) on the roads. The road tax paid on non dyed diesel, is meant to help pay for the fixing/ upkeep of the roads.
By having two dying the off road red, if you're caught with red fuel in the tank if an on road vehicle, you'll be fined.

I think that is a c model 8.3 Cummins, just a bigger version of the 5.9 12 valve. Those are good engines and will run forever with proper maintenance. Looks like maybe an Allison transmission. Should be a sweet truck once it's rolling again. I always enjoy these videos.
