Dyno Tuning an NA BARRA - Is It Worth It? | Basic Barra Performance Mods Pt 8

- We head to Maxx Performance to Dyno Tune our NA Barra powered BA Falcon.
But are the gains even worth doing this?
Hopefully this will give people a better idea of what can be expected when tuning one of these cars. Being a BA we should see lower gains and overall figures than anything BF onwards would, as well as also much lower than any manual or ZF auto cars by what the tuners had seen previously.
Regardless I still feel we got some pretty decent gains out of a tune alone - and there’s no chance of me stuffing this one up so that’s a bonus!
And it always seems difficult to get info on what people have paid for tunes, so we’re sure to cover exactly what we paid for this.

So was it worth it? Keen to hear your thoughts based on the final figures and dyno graph?
Definitely worth it. You’ll always get the most out of bolts ons with a tune. Do you know what your WOT afr’s are?
@finnigan0001 Sorry mate I don’t have any data for AFR’s.
Hi guys. Do you mean AFR allot heads? The best aftermarket heads going around for doing up your old school V8. Not sure if they do one for the Barra. Be awesome if they did!!
@Roman Wilde AFR is Air Fuel Ratio, one of the main areas measured and adjusted as part of a cars tune. As opposed to AFR (company name, short for Air Flow research) which you're right and make some amazing heads for small block fords and other V8 based engines 👍
Pretty much exactly what my auto ba xr6t made before I modded it so I'd say it's worth it to practically keep up with one, with the benefit of less maintenance and potential issues of having a turbo
Can i just say, this is my first Brownies Video and you seem like such a genuine legend! A car guy that just wants to learn and is living his dream and taking us along with you. I hope this brings you huge success champion! Keep at it
Wow thanks mate that’s very kind. That’s the idea but also hopefully I can show some people that you can have a go at home and it’s not so hard, especially if I can manage it!
Cheers mate, plenty more to come.
Good to see NA falcon content.
Thanks mate, hope you enjoy 👍
Not for long. I'd put $500 on a turbo conversion
Mine makes 240 at the wheels thanks to Ron Herrod. No waiting for boost. Just power. The 6 speed makes it fun.
your doing great my bro, you never skip out on the small but important details we're all keen to know about and you make it easy enough to understand for new comers too keen to see whats to come in the future
Thanks mate, I try to cover enough without making it too boring and hours long! Not easy sometimes.
Glad you’re enjoying and thanks for watching 👍
I just picked up my first xr6 a few days ago and thanks to you mate I'm going to be able to watch every video and do all these mods plus more with ease! Thankyou!
Awesome, good luck with the new car mate and hope you enjoy 👍
Looks like it's worth it to me, simple easy to bolt on mods yourself and getting a tune to increase it's torque and horsepower, imagine if a stall converter was added, bigger cams, valve spring upgrade and get higher compression out of the engine, good things will happen. Would love to see this happen in a Barra.
Still plenty of gains to be had in these NA Barra’s but shows what even the basic bolt ons and tune can gain. Thanks mate
Mean looking XR6! Its reassuring to see a na getting some decent gains, I'm thinking of going with a mild cam and tune after the basic stuff on my 03, already feels pretty fast after driving a na diesel
Thanks very much mate, they’re not bad for what they are. Best of luck with yours mate, hope you enjoy it 👍
u end up going with a cam? looking at kelford cams but dont know if thats the way i want to go yet
feels lol I’ve got a ba wagon and a old td27 nav, wagon almost feels quick compared to the nav lol 0-60 in a couple days
Was itching to watch this as soon as I saw it posted! Great series mate, love it
Legend, thanks mate. Been a lot of requests for this one, hopefully it's what people have been looking for 👍
Watched it all again , and here's a big thankyou. It's a great video , and you're a great guy for doing it 👍💯😜
i tuned a f6 g6e on our mainline hub dyno at work last week. With a cold air intake and a new dump pipe/de-cat made 487.7hp at the wheels could have made 500 but it would have required tuning past the point of diminishing returns.
A good series of video's mate. I've got three NA Barra Cars. A 2006 BFll Futura Wagon with the BTR 4 speed auto, a 2003 BA XR6 Ute with the T5 manual and a 2013 FG XR6 sedan with the ZF 6 speed auto. All 3 have the same mods, Underdrives, airbox mods (k&n filters, secondary air feeds, territory intake pipe on the first two and intake muffler delete and restrictor ring removal in the airbox on the FG). Pacemaker 4490 extractors and 3" piping down to the muffler before the axle, and 2.5" piping from there back on the BA & BF, 4495 Comp extractors and full 3" system on the FG. All of them have an 82C thermostat in place of the factory 92C unit and are all run on 98 Ultimate fuel. The BF and FG are just Family Cars used for carting kids to School, shopping and everyday stuff, predominantly by my wife, the Ute is my Work ute that has been carting things to job sites for 17 of it's 17 years. The FG would literally eat them both, even when it was stock it would have matched the modified BF and cleaned up the modified BA! The BF is noticeably gruntier than the BA, even with the Btr/ 3.27 diff combo V the 5 speed/3.45 of the BA. A lot of people don't realise that the BF-FG series Barra engines whilst having higher compression ratios, also have true variable cam timing. BA's advance and retard the intake and exhaust Cams the same way, sure it works ok, a bit like the SOHC VCT engine in the AU, but doesn't change your valve overlap at all. Ultimately you want an advanced intake lobe down low and a retarded intake lobe up high for power and a retarded exhaust lobe down low and advanced exhaust lobe up high for power. The BF & FG engines do this and also have slightly larger camshafts for more power and the ability to idle smoother with them! I reckon I'll throw a turbo on the Ute sometime, just a low boost set up for a bit more pulling power. I'm a bit like you, can't keep anything stock! Keep up the good work.👍
Nice, not a bad line up at all mate. Yep I really did start with a less than ideal base but at least it's something to gather info from and add X kw on top of for each model ahead... and it was cheap!
It certainly is a disease this modding car things, you're right I'm normally very similar to you but I've managed to leave the daily driver VE alone and hope to keep it that way. I'm at a stage where I'd really prefer to work as little or not at all on the daily!
Thanks and best of luck mate 👍
@@BrowneysGarage I'm glad to have found your channel, there are a lot of Channels out there squeezing huge power from huge $$ combo's, which while interesting, is out of the reach of most. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to squeeze some more out of your BA, arguably the slower the base the more you should do it! I've often joked with my father about people squeezing huge numbers out of what were already hugely powerful Cars for road use when in standard trim, then they become shed queens due to being overpowered license killers. A lot of them then drive some really underpowered Cars daily that could do with a leg up and they leave them stock! I've got a big cammed, CHI headed Clevo in an XB at home, it calls you to lose your license every time you get it out, so I know the dilemma! I'm now looking forward to your future video's, you picked up more with the tune than I thought you would, well worth it, good job.👍
@@Mr357Cleveland Great point, I'd never thought about it quite the same way. Very similar mindset for me though, it's awesome to see the top end of what can be done but it's unrelatable for most, largely unusable and just becomes about throwing big bucks in... Your XB does sound like a heap of fun though!
Thanks for watching and hope you'll enjoy what we have coming up 👍
Yeah man what you said! I’ve got rid of a ba xr6t with 290rwkw and 820nm and I sold it and got an na fg and can’t believe how quick it is, the zf is amazing.
I’d been in a lot of ba and bf n/A’s and I was expecting something similar, it’s not. Now I wanna turbo it or supercharger it but what Barny has done isn’t a bad idea 🤔🤔.
Geez mate you're not wrong about the BTR stealing power. Your 0-100 run didn't look dissimilar to mine in my bone stock BF Fairlane with the ZF transmission. I do run it on 98 as well, but I'm keen to do some of the mods you've done (as well as maybe a cheeky 3:45 LSD which will be a nice upgrade from the 2:23 it's currently got). Keep up the awesome content mate, love your stuff
Thanks mate, to be fair that section I did the run on does have a slight slope to it as well I believe! By far the most noticeable down low though.
Keep an eye out for the next video, I've actually got a good comparison between this car and a really similar modded BF but with the ZF that sounds like it will be perfect for you. Plans sounds awesome, and thanks for watching mate 👍
I did an off the shelf crow cam into a built head in my old AU with the same bolt ons you've done here and it made a touch under 180rwkw through the t5. Well worth it even NA, it was great fun to drive and being a couple of hundred kilos lighter than the BA it was very quick for what it was. Never should've sold it, bloke who bought it put her into a pole a few months later....
Would have been plenty of fun, I’ve done similar to yourself with one of the early SOHC 6’s years ago and they’re awesome. Shame it ended the way it did mate, might have to pick up another AU before the prices start moving up?
@@BrowneysGarage doing a barra turbo and tr6060 into a s2 fairmont ghia now 🤙
@@30059686 That's one way to step it up! Should be a weapon, good luck with the build mate 👍
@@BrowneysGarage cheers, will be keeping an eye on this one from now on too, keep it up!
Damn this was 2 years ago. Time flys, this just popped up in my recommended aha
same as an intech, yes, u can make good power from an N/A 4 litre i6, the challenge is making it rev harder
Half of the reason its worthwhile is the fun you have working with your precious car.
Absolutely mate, couldn't agree more 👍
Excellent episode! The cost was about what I would've thought but you got more power than I expected. Nice run down on what was done too. I always look forward to what you have next. Bring on Heathcote!
I'm not going to have a guess at the 1/4 mile time as I don't know your original time. I would expect a mid 14 but, again, no idea what you were doing before.
Thanks Glen, I didn’t think it was bad bang for buck all considered.
Original time full weight was 16.2! I just can’t get the 60 foots down, first in the 4 speed is so long and the most stall I can get is about 2k rpm but power comes in around 3-3.5k so it’s just really slow to get going. Know others have had slightly more luck but think the heavy 18’s probably aren’t helping as well, otherwise just a limit of what we have. Lucky I’m not going for all out track times or diff gears and stall converter would be sure things!
This video was so worth the wait, good stuff mate!!! Big love to NA falcons, very juicy torque figures from the tune
Awesome thanks mate, hope it answered most peoples questions on this. Not bad for what it is!
Ah, had the same coloured XR6, unfortunately the car copped a bit accident, now I'm onto my next one.👌👌
Great vid Browney 👍 been waiting for this one. We’ve got the manual and done all these mods with you so better go get the tune now and should be seeing 190 odd fingers crossed!! Thanks again keep it up now you’re out of lockdown. Our quarter mile guess for your next strip day - 14.42. Good luck
Thanks mate. Manual should drive a good bit quicker too, hope you’re enjoying it and good luck 👍
Envy Green , funny how so many XR8 and XR6 were made in that popular colour , but only 2 GT or GTP made that colour.
Such a clean car, you've looked after her mate! 😂
Fantastic video. I'm looking into getting my FG G6E NA tuned, and was wondering how you're finding the fuel economy? Lowering it from 11-12L/100km is honestly my priority at this point as I use it a lot for work and you definitely notice how thirsty they can be when you're in urban traffic.
I barely ever see traffic in this fortunately, mostly cruising so can't give too much info on this sorry. I will say that it definitely seemed to drop cruising fuel use though, I'd say it could have been as much as 0.5-1L/100kms but I don't have much in the way of records for this. Would surely drop it everywhere as long as you can hold back from making use of any extra power!
Good luck with it mate 👍
Yeah I've got my economy down to under 10 easy after tune an full exhaust.
Bloody good gains. I bet if feels a lot more sharp now.
I've got a 2004 model with low k's too. Thanks for the ideas mate.
Awesome! Enjoy mate 👍
Nice work there Browney, nicely put together.
Cams cams cams cams! Surely you can make it as quick as a stock turbo BA!
Would be getting up close to a completely stock (but built on a Friday!?) car, diff gears or stall and it would be ahead at the track for sure. Cams would put it right in that stock turbo power range I'd say but at what stage do you stop trying to beat them and join them?
Just get a turbo. So much easier for power.
Nope, keep the goals reasonable and a turbo conversion can actually be pretty reliable and inexpensive (at least until parts prices go mental), but get plenty ahead of any NA car unfortunately. That’s what I hope to prove anyway! I’m certainly not the first to do it though.
That said the NA stuff is awesome cause it’s generally such a low investment as you can do smaller bits as you go, not so much a big one time investment.
@@MrMedic1963 Yeh thats false even tho its common thought. NA barra motors are still bulletproof with turbos as long as you dont push them ridiculously hard. The BA na motor is the weakest link of the barra empire but even still conrods dont let go till just on 400rwkw which means 220-340rwkw should be safe all day everyday.
@@lukesm5747 Thats a load of rubbish. If the BA rods are 'safe' for 400rwkw, which is more than any factory falcon, why did ford then add the f6 rods to the BF mk2, and every barra motor past that? Why'd they bother making a completely new f6 rod in the first place?
Definitely worth it, I got my fg xr6 tuned and got 248 rwhp and with the zf trans tune it really did improve performance and fuel efficiency, great vid mate!!!
Nice, pretty good power there mate! Cheers for watching 👍
@@BrowneysGarage also forgot to mention 375 nm of torque
Don't they mack around that stock?
Those numbers are worse than what ford claimed as stock lol
Absolutely amazing video mate!
Turned off my ad blocker for this
Glad you enjoyed it mate, and thanks 👍 🤣
Finally the video is out hehe now i know the number i gotta beat on my vx v6 commy xD i'll let you know my dyno numbers when i get them. It gets dyno on 15th December and my tune is gonna cost me $1500 from Chip Torque... but gotta pay it cause only people who will touch my v6 commy, everyone els i called up wont do the dyno :/
Ps, 20rwkw gain? I say it's worth it for the parts u done to your car, considering you did not do bigger throttle body, bigger cam kit or force induction... so good gains for little mods you did bro :) plus as u said, next time you dyno your car the cost will be cheaper so u don't gotta worry about big dyno cost later on.
Keep up the good work bro!
Honestly mate I'm super keen to see how it goes, I really should look into the V6 side of things some more one day but in the meantime I'm learning through yourself! Ouch on the price but will hopefully be well worth it, little surprised there's not more market for it.
On the gains, that's my thoughts as well. Really these are pretty simple mods, easy to do at home and perfectly driveable/enjoyable and safe at each step along the way. Not bad considering, cars great to drive but the easy power of the turbo is too tempting.
It seems alot but, 2wd Dynos cost 20k plus to buy, add tuning software licenses, knowledge and a commercial lease(which run ab out 800 a week in NZ)
Can see where a lot of the money goes, don't get me wrong I never said it wasn't fair. But I'm realistic too and it's decent amount of money for a lot of people, still seems worth it though 👍
Nice.
I had a BA XR6 in the same colour. I'm now in an FG.
Nice, enjoy it mate 👍
Getting mine tuned on Monday from tune house in Sydney thanks for the video at least I know what to expect thanks love all the videos

I do but I got upset I thought I’d get more than you but I am very happy with the results for 1399 a little more expensive than you paid but love it
do you know what the biggest limit on the car was while it was being tuned, except the transmission?
Couldn't say for sure what the biggest would be sorry mate. I do know Maxx Performance recommend a twin 2.5" exhaust with 3" front section and likely a larger merge collector on the headers as well so that may be a factor at this level.
Great to see this result!
Well done mate, that's some good gains!
Thanks mate, not too bad for an old NA car I guess!
Very decent result compared to my BA. My wagon was tuned before I bought it, while running only the headers and full exhaust. It (apparently) picked up 9.8 NM and 4.1 KW. But the graph says that the baseline was 155.5 KW. It was a Mainline dyno which may explain the high reading. Should not have made more power than yours with way less mods.
My torque reading baseline was 674.9 NM. Seems way off from yours and admittedly the whole NM vs lb/ft thing always confused me, so I don't know what that is all about except to say it's probably a meters / pounds mixup of some kind.
Did you get a quote on a gearbox conversion?? : P
Can be so hard to compare different dynos but you're right, something seems a little off in among that. Doesn't matter too much though, as long as the car drives and feels good you're all set. And nice to have someone else pay for mods for you before you bought it too at least!
Nope to the gearbox conversion quote, I'm far too tight to have someone else do that for me! A T56 or similar 6 speed manual sure would be a nice upgrade though, wouldn't rule it out in future 👍
4.11 diff gears next? Followed a shot of funny gas?
No cheater gas or gears yet, nearly done with NA for now and will putting a budget turbo setup on 👍
Can't turbo my Barra 180sx unless I use a loophole, so I'm thinking of a built na for it, this has helped 🙏🙏
Yup. did all those mods to an atmo FG with zf 6 speed quite a few years ago and got a 14.4 second pass without a tune and once I got a mail order tune from BP racing I managed a 13.6 down the quarter. Am guessing your time to be low 15s and possibly even high 14s.
Thanks mate, damn good times for an NA car. Fingers crossed 👍
@@BrowneysGarage Should be fun on the day. If you have a mate with stock 16" steelies with low profile tyres you can artificially reduce your gearing some more . !st gear in btrs is horrible. Also , now that you have turbo m86 rear you should be able to find a cheap non lsd territory centre with the 3.7 gears....even more fun off the line without being drag only !
@Ford AU Yep that first gear is a killer. Wasn’t going to but may have to play with gearing or a higher stall converter one day, damn money pits!
@@BrowneysGarage True , but last Territory 3.7 gear set only cost me $100
Congrats on the 5k subs man. Keep it up 👍
Thanks mate, will do my best!
Hi Browney I hear you are assembling parts to turbo the Barra I mentioned before the benefits of running Sniper coil packs in NA Barras but you may want to include them on your shopping parts list (around $220) when you step up to a turbo the first trip to the dyno turbo'ed you will see the need when the standard coil packs wont cut the mustard, flame out and misfire anything over 4500 rpm. Good inspirational RUclips series for the everyday petrol head and nice clean car mate - Good luck
I'm sorry mate but are you on the payroll there or something? I've tried to address it in your last comment, everywhere I look and hear the factory coils are recommended. But here's something to consider evidence based - FGX running over 1000kw on a hub dyno before the factory ignition was a limitation ruclips.net/video/vQYg4twRymE/видео.html.
Appreciate you watching and your enthusiasm but I don't want to allow what I see as misinformation to stay here uncontested.
yes good work ,,, the lsd,, there was a option with xr's ,, the sv6 no option to tick
Great work, I have been enjoying watching your videos
Legend, thank you very much mate 👍
Top work Browney!!! Should have gone and give scotty the shits a couple of doors up could have gone for a fang in the trolvo!! Love the time lapse from Broadford to Dandy do that trip only from Epping most days in the carpet truck!!
Would have loved to have a sticky beak but that’s the last thing they need finally being back in there, sure they get enough on lookers stopping by!
Very glad I don’t do that drive everyday. Thanks mate 👍
This may have been asked by someone else, but how is it making so much torque? I know these cars are rated at 380nm at the crank from factory. 410nm to the wheels seems insane from a non tuned 182 barra (even with the bolt ons), is there a chance its supposed to be 310nm instead of 410 in dyno results?
I could be onto nothing as I'm not aware if these cars significantly underrated in torque from factory or not. I was guessing that if the factory rating was correct, then 300ish to the rears would be the norm on a dirt stock BA, and then around 340-380nm with your mods.
I'm not meaning to criticize at all, I'm a huge fan of your channel and work you have done for the xr6 community, I'm just curious. If a NA 182 can actually make 450nm+ to the wheels so easily I'll have to get one!
Good stuff browney,i just looked up in my factory FG XR6 handbook under output and it says my 2010 fg xr6 came out from the factory with 195kw,so having the zf 5 speed and better intake and higher compression in a later model xr6 they certainly improved on the output. I have a growler cold air intake fitted, and a xforce 3 inch high flow catback exhaust system that has the biggest steel cat ive ever seen on any car,it sounds better than my neighbours gt mustang lol. Id love to put my fg on the dyno,i reckon shes putting out over 200kw currently. A set of extractors coming this financial year and some nice rims for her. Keep up the good work 👍👌
Thanks very much mate.
The FG are definitely a step up in power but be careful reading into those factory power figures. What you've quoted is the factory rated power 'at the flywheel' where the dyno figures are 'at the rear wheels'. Plenty of info about online (that will explain it better than I will!) if you're curious to learn more about the difference.
Good luck and hope you enjoy the FG, they're a great car 👍
Yeah those are factory flywheel figures, my fg xr6 was making around 150kw at the rears and after the tune it was making 185kw at the rears. The tuners told me the falcons lose around 20% from the fly wheel to the rears. Cheers mate
@@Geoffcwest the previous owner built the engine for a turbo conversion, he was a mechanic so I believe he did do a fair bit of work on the engine,im thinking about finishing what he started. I have a 350 hp f12V pushrod version
Those were awesome results! Such great engines! I wish there was support for these engines where i live (South Africa) as maintaining the Barra engine (let alone trying to modify it) is near IMPOSSIBLE! Cant even get engine mountings, Let alone extractors/headers or pulley kits or anything really!? But non the less Browney, your content is inspirational! Keep up the great work!
Hey Jason! Awesome to have you joining us all the way from South Africa, I know there were some much earlier Falcons over that way but did many/any of the Barra's actually make it over there? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
Great engines but the prices of desirable examples (anything factory turbo or stronger internals) have been creeping up and gone through the roof at the moment. Fine by me, should be able to turbo this car and make good power for the street with the pieces everyone else throws away for BIG power - perks of plenty of these still being about and getting modified.
Thanks for watching mate.
@@BrowneysGarage Only a pleasure bud! Its some seriously detailed, informative and entertaining content...so happy to watch every episode!
As for the volume of Falcons/Territory's this side, ya, plenty early (SOHC) Falcons arrived (including XR6 etc editions) And the numbers started dipping as the newer versions came in. Territory is a great vehicle, but as with the same fate of the Falons....moat parts are near impossible to get and the rest require importation from Australia.
i have just fully restored and old dead SX Territory, with having to import everything from radiator to window switches etc. Only thing done locally was the spray job , wheel refurbishment and roof lining replacement. Which is why these models are dirt cheap, nobody wants the nighmare of trying to source parts. Pity , cause they arr a brilliant platform.
Thanks again buddy, really appreciated.
@@BrowneysGarage yaz looking forward to when the Barra goes turbo! Could well inspire me to do the same, as you have with the Bluetooth kit i ordered from Australia!
@Jason Sasman Thanks mate, didn’t think any of the newer generation past AU era had made it but then again I’ve never had any need to find out! Very cool, and big dedication to get the Territory back on the road, that’s awesome.

This is exactly the video I was looking for. Next step put a ZF 6spd in it 👌
Nice job on this NA project mate. I’ve been following this build for quiet sometime and you have gotten me very interested in the shifter tune for my BA Futura. But I do wonder. How do you find the fuel economy after this tune?
Thanks very much mate.
Fuel economy definitely seemed to have improved when cruising. Don't have solid numbers cause I didn't do quite enough testing before and after but seems to have dropped maybe up to half a litre per 100kms or so when cruising after all the mods, probably largely down to the tune.
@@BrowneysGarage that’s a very surprising answer as I’ve done a NA tune before on a different car. And the fuel economy was as bad as a small v8. I always think the more power you gain... the more fuel it takes = poor economy. Now economy isn’t an issue at all if you want power but 12.5L per 100km (which is what my BA does) is a lot for a factory standard tuned car.
@@jakeguitarbass7209 Ideally the tune should make the car run more efficiently and use less fuel cruising (depending on if cruise tables are tuned or just WOT). True that broadly more power uses more fuel but that's not really in play when cruising as the power required to do this will be the same as before, only it should make this power using less fuel.
I'm a dummy though, there's probably something in there and my understanding that is wrong!
you guys are hugely underrated, also i live near you.
Thank you very much mate 👍
Another great video definitely something I'm going to look into im thinking of doing cams first though trying to get as much power as possible while keeping it na
If you’re staying NA may be a good way to go, that and FG intake as well maybe?
Thanks heaps mate 👍
Might have to look into fg intake hadnt thought of that. any idea how much work it would be?
Been too long since I looked into it but believe it straight bolts the manifold itself on, can use FG throttle body with a wiring adapter, maybe use your own injectors cause I think the later ones are slightly different maybe?
Again it’s been a long time since I looked at it and never dove into it too much but there is promise there for gains.
14.9 great video mate. 👍🏻🤙🏻😁

Thanks mate. Turbo diff was 3.45 compared to 3.46 in the NA or other way round can’t remember, but yes same same really.
my 2004 BA falcon XT has exact same mileage as yours.
Nice, plenty of life left in these cars mate... as long as I don’t break mine anyway!
Long first gear, never had a car that ran out to 90km in first, 1st gear in my ba 5 speed runs out to 60km 2nd 100km
Painfully long in these, may work a little in our favour with a turbo on it though... 👍
It’s always worth it to modify a car you mentioned the younger models with better intake manifolds, transmission & higher compression can you pick them up at a breaker? I would try doing that & look at a performance cam to get a stronger rev range.....just a thought.
All do-able but the bang for buck starts to really drop away with some of it. Plus there's cheap turbos out there, so that's coming up!
@@BrowneysGarage ...... yup bang for buck is always a bummer
I'm tempted to purchase a NA Barra Falcon, be that an XT, XR6, G6, G6E from FG onwards. Great solid highway cruisers.
I bought an 03 XT falcon for 2K just 2 and a half years ago. All I can say is it's better than riding everywhere lol. Also cost me half the price and a bit less than my 2012 ninja 300 that I bought way back in 2015 🤦♂️😂
Falcon goes alright on the highway. Less power to weight ratio than my little Ninja 300 with me on it but the torque makes up for it.
My XT topped out at 180kph in 3rd with the limiter still on it and a BTR 4 spd.
Wondering what the rwhp difference is between the 4 speed and zf6
The boys at Maxx have said the BTR can rob something crazy like 15rwkw compared to the ZF! It is 2 decade or so older design.
Another great video mate 👍. Looks like the tune was definetly worth it to support the mods.
Thanks very much mate. I thought so too, fairly pleased with it.
Not bad from a N/A some v8's don't make that power in stock trim
Thanks mate! Not bad for what it is, but will never sound the same as a V8 so there's that...
Hi Browney. Was there any merit tuning the ecu to 95 rather than 98? Cheers.
No expert but if I had to say the 98 would allow the tuner to lean on it harder and put more timing into it with confidence. A little more conservative on 95 and you'd likely drop some power, how much I couldn't say.
great work brownie. I love it.
I had a bf1 Fairmont 4 speed auto
I did
3.73 lsd from manual gt
powerbond underdrives
full exhaust
k&n filter, f6 snorkel, turbo upper
cooler thermostat
sct x4 from intune motorsports
it used to go great for a non turbo. it really wanted a stall to get off the line better though.
great channel. I've subscribed. cheers.
Hey thanks very mate. Sounds like a good setup, those diff gears would have made a big difference alone I'd say?
That first gear really seems to need shorter diff gears or a big stall for getting away, it's just soo long!
@@BrowneysGarage diff gears was the best mod, followed by the underdrives I reckon(I couldn't believe how much livelier the underdrives felt).
I always thought with 3.9 diff gears and a 2800rpm stall it would of left the line so much harder.
I've since sold it and have a family suv as the daily but have an 92 eb project that gets driven a few times a month
watching yours with great interest.
cheers
@all-motor I was very surprised by the underdrives as well so glad to hear it wasn't just in my head!
Awesome on the project EB, the drop in weight would be really noticeable over the BF I'm sure.
Thanks mate 👍
Gday mate, any idea on a aftermarket coil plug cover, for 182 barra that dosent letbwater through if hose engine? Thanks
lowkey watching this whilst thinking hmmm my gas wagon aint gonna get fuck all gains with the basic mods but hey at least its gonna be a little different from other gas wagons
Keep up the videos mate. Doing awesome 👌
Thanks very much mate. Plenty in the works 👍
Isn't a fg 190kw from factory? Did they say what you would expect tuning one? Cheers
Stock power figures are quoted at the flywheel, not at the rear wheels as the dyno reads. Plenty of examples of NA FG's with mods and results on Maxx Performance's FB or Insta page but an extra 15-20rwkw seems pretty achievable.
Boys will be Boys ... ;) Well done once again !! :)
Thanks very much mate 👍
I actually leant a lot about basic dynontuning in this vid 😊. How much extra power and 0-100 for a fg xr6 auto?
Hey mate just wondering have you thought about upgrading valve springs and cams aswel?
It was considered but I felt we were getting to a point of diminishing returns, and I wanted to move on to making some turbo noises! But if were going all out NA it would be worth looking into.
Going to tune my FG g6e NA next Thursday 👌🏼👌🏼 interested to see what numbers it will do without getting a turbski 😁
hey interested in the results you got, kinda want to get mine tuned as well, what mods and figures you running?
I got 253 HP out of it , I was getting up to 156 kph down the strip. 14.564 was the fastest with a 0.120 reaction time, has a growler cold air intake an just cat back exhaust. Header pipes was next .
@@mrbnanna8948 definitely worth it for a bit more HP 👌🏼😎 I think it’s actually better on fuel now to 😎
Nicely done car is looking great and performing well:)
Thanks mate, the camera adds weight to me but makes the car look better than it is at least!
thats heaps extra torque over standard 380nm to 460nm thats a huge jump
Thanks mate, not bad for what it is. Still not turbo levels though!
Good comentary mate I think she'll do 0-100 7.2 and 1/4 15.25 60 foot 2.2 1/8 mile 9.4
Thanks. Think you're probably on the money there mate, let's see!
With a ZF or manual do you think you could get 200rwkw???
Have to ask, after 3mths have you had any negative issues with the tune? I have had my xr8 back from tuning for a week now, and have several tune issues
Bearing in mind it’s far from a daily driver, but no I haven’t had any downsides that I’ve noticed. What issues are you having, have you spoken to the tuner to see if it can be sorted?
@@BrowneysGarage ive had no thorttle responce twice, engines hunting at idle and underload, overheated, and my cruise control i swear was accelerating, but no havent called the place that did the tune
@@smithy2 Damn that sounds all over the shop mate! Sorry I can't be of any more help than saying to get it back to the tuner and see what they can sort. Good luck
@@BrowneysGarage na mate all good, just curious, ive been reading some similar stories, i rang another mob to take alook, the tuners i used damaged the car separate to the tune
I would say worth it. Question why not fit the FG intake? Or did ford modify something so it doesn't work if what is it?
Has to stop some where mate, otherwise before we knew it we'd be at "Why not build a stroked/destroked engine for it?" or some other extreme and I'd be on the street!
FG intake is do-able and has been done a few times before but seems there are a few small tricks to it as well and wasn't something I wanted to tackle on this one.
Thanks for the quick reply 👍 I have a na Sy series 2 territory I believe they fitted them with the bf motor. I have done the same mods to except the pod filter I just chucked in a K&n. good to know the intake does fit I will get one try it.
Thanks Trent
I like the videos but personally i think the ba falcon is not worth doing anything to unless its a barra turbo, where as the 195 barras might be worth, i dont know what power you could pull out but im sure it would be above 300hp
how can I get my xr6 ba na to hit limiter? do I need a tune? If so where should I go to get it and how much if you know. Cheers love the videos man❤️
Cool car great colour if only we could have these in the uk🇬🇧
Thanks mate, and awesome to have you watching from the UK! Grass is always greener, sure there's plenty over there that we don't get (at least at a reasonable price) that would be far ahead of our good ol' Falcon taxis!
14.7 in the quarter
R/T e49 Charger times with 300kgs extra in weight so not bad
@@garymarquett2866 not a very fair comparison. put modern tires on the E49 and it runs 13's, and that's a manual vs auto comparison. Still a great result for a very basic NA barra though.
Got my bf mk2 Barra with ZF at 186RWKW!
Real good power for NA mate, nice!
0-100 - 6.8s
1/4 - 15@155
I like you're thinking mate 👍
I timed the 0 to 100 on this video and it was just on 6 seconds, I'm thinking 14.9.
@David Griggs Don’t rely too heavily on that 0-100, I try to use the same spot for good comparisons to other videos but it does have some gradient to it so not 100% accurate for timing. Good guess though, let’s see how it goes 👍
Great video mate. Might be a silly question but do they make a throttle controller for these falcons?
Thanks mate. Not that I know of, at least not for these earlier BA/BF.
If you love the car its worth it, But if you are after power, a BA N/a 6 is not budget friendly unless you are going all out.
I love my Fords but after buying a tuned LS1 Statesman with 265rwkw for $4k its really hard to go back. Ive had Falcons, Fairlane's and LTD's all my life and have spent thousands on them.... but ultimately they never really went that great for me. Ive had some nice fords that defiantly put a smile on my face, but the first time driving the Statesman it was somewhat scary lol
And you could buy a BA xr6 turbo for 4 or 5k and make a lot more than 260kw with a lot less in mods.
Yep you're right, if going all out the NA stuff can get really expensive from here bang for buck wise and the LS is really hard to beat. Turbo Barra is up there but the way the prices for factory turbo cars is going it may not be for long! Sounds like a great power figure for a street car for sure mate, hope you enjoy it and maybe we'll have a play on something similar one day 👍
When's ya merch comming out
Have been on the fence about whether or not to do this/if there would be enough demand. Might start shopping round suppliers to see what solutions are out there and if we try some. Thanks mate 👍
Would you be able to let me know if an 04 ba xr6 has an lsd? Planning on getting one in the next month haha
No way of knowing without checking the particular car sorry mate. Wasn't standard, could be optioned but from what I've seen not a heap were so likely it won't have LSD sorry mate. But the good news is we've covered swapping one in!
Good luck mate and thanks for watching.
Your power curve ran out quick at the top as if you don't have enough injector in it. What was the a/f ratio 500 rpm beyond peak power , standard injectors only support approx 200kw at the engine
Don't have AFR's but I really doubt it's out of injector, plenty of NA cars with more power and same injectors.
Would the same mods and a tune, give the commodore similar gains?
A few places tune the Series 2 VE SV6 and VF SV6's with good gains, my mates Series 2 VF SV6 went from 180kw at the wheels to 200kw with a cat-back exhaust and a tune. They have since come out with an intake that can bump it even further, not sure how much.
Good question, truth be told I don't know much at all about modding on the V6 Commodore side.
On mine I'd be sure it wouldn't, it's starting to get a little tired, but you'd think with much the same era design, displacement etc then it would likely be similar. 🤷
@ProWilson999 Sounds like some pretty good gains to be had there too, thanks mate 👍
Would a FG inlet manifold yield you any power difference? Would you try it?
From the few I've seen finish the swap and tune it, yes there are likely gains to be had there. But unfortunately I don't think we'll be trying this, had to draw the line and stop somewhere.
@@BrowneysGarage true. its just so cheap to do.
I scored one with fuel rail and injectors (not that you want to use the FG injectors on a BA, unless you had some sort of aftermarket ECU) for $100, I just need to get adapters for the BA injectors to fit in the rail, a new gasket for the intake manifold, and some FG heater piping (that you need to modify to work on the BA due to different configuration behind the block and around the firewall).
I'll get round to installing it one of these days, along with a few other mods that Browney has featured on his channel (though I have an F6 typhoon airbox, K&N panel filter, Territory plenum (though that will go), SS inductions Bigmouth intake on my intake system, I still need to get some pacemaker headers, DEA exhaust, LSD, and underdrive pulleys, as well as maybe the oil cooler as well, and an 82C thermostat, and aeroflow billet thermostat housing (that'll be next as mines leaking..).
@Glyn Atkin Thanks for sharing mate, few tricks there I’d forgotten by the looks of it! Love to hear how you go with it if you’ve got the time when done 👍
I recently bought a ba xr6 and I'm curious to know if anyone else finds the driver's seat to be too high?
Strange, I'm 6'6" and actually find it to sit down quite well. That may just be by comparison though, the VE Commodore I do most of my driving in feels incredibly high with the roof line cutting off some vision by comparison.
@@BrowneysGarage maybe I just need more seat time to get used to it
Nice looking XR6,👍
Thanks, nice looking ute in your pic as well mate 👍
