    I have an EL 4.0 six, great motor, this car has been so good to me. It's not fast but a real cruiser, great for effortless highway cruising & towing heavy loads. 490,000 klms & still running strong, not tired or sugglish & hardly burns any oil. Original Auto still. Lapped Australia many times towing a caravan. I've finally updated now but hard to let go of the old EL dual fuel Futura sedan, been through so much together, lol.

    I bought a 2006 aspirated black BF2 XR6 with the silver stripes (similar to the GT) last year. It has the ZF 6 speed and only had 52,000 klms on the clock. I had a standard 2008 BF2 before that and I can’t believe the difference. The previous owner ticked all the boxes on the order and kindly put a set of Michelin Pilot Sports on it so it grips really well. As you said not super fast but still has some poke but it’s the handling, gearbox and brakes that really set it apart from the standard model. I’m in my 40’s and have been in plenty of faster cars but this is a fantastic and enjoyable daily driver. If you are a P-plater they are such a perfect car as they are fun from the get-go but have huge potential for modifications once you get you opens. I’m sure the Holden SV6 would be an enjoyable car for a P-plater as well but if you want to modify it later I’d say the potential and value for money is with the Falcon. Keep up the good work mate. 😊

    Thanks Jon ...Glad you finally got to try the N/A.. Funnily enough I had a BA Fairmont Ghia with diff bushes , dodgey centre bearing in the tailshaft issue , crappy radio ...etc but it was the first Barra powered Falcon I owned and loved the reliability of it ..Just as much as the legendary bullet proofness of the Intech SOHC ...4.0 in the AU 2 I still own ... Then I traded the Fairmont and bought the FG XR6 built in April 2008....I've had it since early 2016 ...It's wonderful ..I fell in love with the FG just like the AU when I first saw both on their release .. My XR6 has the 195kw and 391 Nm engine and the ZF 6 speed auto ...The only thing I'd disagree on is fuel economy .. I'm not often giving mine a hard drive like you would when reviewing but I don't tinkle around like a grandma either ..Just driven normally . Mine on a longish drive returns in the low 8's litres per hundred kilometres often and as a daily without too much sitting around idling mid 10's litres per hundred kilometres ..Definitely not 13's . ... No turbo and most timing the later N/A Barra 's get 6.7 /6.8 to 100 kmh times ..which not a real long time ago was a decent V8 time.. Some say low 6's is attainable with some mods that don't cost too much...Thanks so much for trying a version of the Falcon that actually was the by far biggest built one of over 3.5 million Falcons between 1960 and 2016..the naturally aspirated straight six..

      @@RossReviewsau Thanks Jon ..Yes ...As the vast bulk of Barra's were the N/A quite obviously it's nice to know the real reason why the Barra Turbo is such a great engine and capable of huge power ..It's like a house .. If the foundations are no good the house will eventually collapse .The same applies here ..The Barra block is that foundation ...and same block for both N/A and Turbo .
      An AU 2 would be better because any early issues with the 1's were quickly sorted . An FG N/A without diff bush issues the BA had will let you run in the mid to high 6's for the 0-100 which not too long ago was V8 territory ...Cheers ..

    Remember when the early 90 HSV's came out they had 195kw (with 8 cylinders), and N/A six 10 years later did the same with technology that was considered desirable from Europe. Ford made a gem with the Barra and it will stand the test of time. Even the old 250ci (4.1litre) were pretty good even though they sounded crap. Obviously the Turbo is the ducks guts but the N/A isn't to shabby either. I've owned a BFII turbo, great car sadly that attracted kangaroo's and people that were colour blind, now have an FGII N/A with minor mods that goes pretty well too. It's no race car but brilliant on the long long drive.

      My FG XR-6 n/a Barra lve had since new, you run them on 98 premium which gives you a little more torque & power as my car has the 5 speed 5R-55S which l had rebuilt properly the way Ford should have made them in the first place, they’re a French Borg Warner which was very short lived only for a couple of years when Ford standardised with the ZF on the mark 2 series, the torque characteristics of the dual vvt Barra with the slightly higher ratio lower gears make the 5 speed wind out quite well as l can consistently get 0-100 k’s in high 6’s low 7’s & would be faster than manual selection, as an aside any young bloke that wants an FG XR steer clear of the 5 speed auto version as l know a lot of people have had big problems with the 5R55S like me unless you get a ZF unit that was an option or @ least a manual if possible.

    Nice Review Ross, BF are my favourite models, like you say, they are affordable still. My favourite BF is the 05 to 06 BF1 Fairmont Ghia, which came out factory with the ZF6, it had the dual premium ICC, premium sound, factory leather, electric seats, electric pedal adjustment, centre clock, and extra muffler between the cat and the main muffler which made them extra quiet. The springs were also a comfort type with added sports performance so they rode nicely and handled excellent as well. They are the rarest of all BF models, I think, maybe rarer than the FPVs, there seems to be alot of the BF2 Ghias but finding a BF1 is like a needle in a hay stack. I think this is because they were only produced from mid 2005 to mid 2006 when the BF2 came out. I managed to find one in Perth, with Factory SAT Nav and sunroof, in mercury silver, with very rare S3 trim (Medium Light Stone Leather Silky Pebble). Typical rust in passengers front door closing edge but otherwise very clean, and well maintained. Another thing about the BF is the torque curve is very early so maximum torque is at 2500 rpm, making it the most torque of all models. The FG has higher torque but not until 3250 rpm, so at 2000 rpm the BF is producing 350 Nm and the FG 330, I noticed the difference when I drove my friends FG. I swapped out the standard cat for a 100 cell hi flow and that made a huge difference as well. BFs are fast becoming the collectables, especially if they have standard premium ICC, ZF6 trans, leather, centre clock, and or any extras like sunroof and SAT Nav.

      Remember the wagon has leaf springs like the ute, but more body weight to control. I own an 09 Mk III Falcon wagon in stock form, and I've owned a BF XR6 turbo sedan. The extra weight of the IRS is so worth it. Thats something the Holden wagon has, IRS. I love pushing my wagon around country roads at anti-social speeds, but you'd really wanna sink some dollars into the suspension of the wagon before you added too much extra power. In saying that, the versatility of the wagon is unmatched. Its a people carrier, its a ute, its a tow mule, and when you combine the simplicity of the leaf sprung live axle rear end, with the taxi dominating 'Go forever' nature of the barra, you get a vehicle that requires next to no maintenance, will take years of abuse and mistreatment, and still provide reliable service when you need it most.

    For reference if anyone want's to know, redline is @5850 however peak HP is @5200. Trust me, like all engines there is no point going much further then the 5200 peak as the HP and torque curves both drop dramatically, so you're better off shifting. The torque curve is full peak @2500 flat and is where you want to be if on acceleration when towing or climbing steep terrain for optimal pulling power and economy. No worries

    • @RossReviewsau
      @RossReviewsau  3 года назад

      same for turbo? F6?

    • @Twenty_Six_Hundred
      @Twenty_Six_Hundred 3 года назад

      @@RossReviewsau So i went with the 06 BF and im fairly sure there really wouldn't be much if any difference + - a year. The XR6T makes peak 245kW (329 hp) @5250 and peak torque is 480Nm (354 ft-lb) @2000. As for the F6 peak 270kW (362 hp) @5000 and peak torque is 550Nm (406 ft-lb) @2000 - 4250. As you can see the F6 actually peaks 250rpm earlier however the peak torque range stays strong till 4250 rather then laying over like the factory XR6T. This is most likely because FPV had tuned the F6 to hold a steady torque line for smoother power delivery. It's fairly common practice when tuning performance turbo engines to want a flat torque line. Basically with torque the flatter the line the better and from 2000 till 4250 it would be flat lining. All this information is pulled from factory graphs submitted by Ford and FPV themself as claim/proof. After looking at the two dyno curves i can tell you FPV really dialed it in and is a flat as can be where the xr6t starts tipping over directly after peak much like the NA engine does. Im actually really impressed with the tune FPV had managed.

    • @Twenty_Six_Hundred
      @Twenty_Six_Hundred 3 года назад

      Oh and i forgot redline is claimed to be at @5450 as per factory dyno graphs although im sure the limiter would still be around the 5850. Like i was saying before HP and torque drop like flies after peak performance. So you wouldn't gain anything after 5000rpm with the F6 other then unnecessary engine wear.

      @@jamesp7935 You should be beating regular golfs with an NA xr6. Regardless to make it quicker go Herrod Cai, pacemaker extractors, full exhaust with hi flow cat, underdrive pulley kit and then a tune which should get you between 180-200rwkw from 140-150rwkw.

    Review a barra 220 3 valve V8. If you can find one mostly found in Fairlanes and Fairmonts and xt Falcons. It’s not a boss V8

    no love for the 4 speed? i have a zf and regularly enough drive my sons AU with the 4 speed and the 4 speed is fine.. not amazing, but perfectly good.... and please don't call it peppy. call it slow if you want, but not peppy.. save that for 1L 3cyl micro hatches.
