After selling my BF xr6t 2 years ago I decided to look into a commodore and settled on a fully optioned 04 VY Series II Ls1 Manual HBD with just 64.000kms , and ill tell you what ill never look back. Its slower yes ( by a fair bit ) but as for driving experience the SS is so much more enjoyable. Done the usual Higgins Heads and large Crow cam + supporting mods and its makes a healthy 300+rwkw. Cosmo purple with colour matched leather, just hit the 80.000kms. This is a good comparison of a motor making power as compared to the turbo making power.sure a turbo motor will make more peak power but in 90% of situations that leaves you playing catch up to the car with proper bottom end grunt even if its got less power overall.
Up the LS & BARRA can't go wrong with either. I'm in the states so closes thing I can get to a Barra is a 2JZ-GTE or B58. But the displacement is what makes the Barra special. I’ve seen this reported many times by independent reviews, and have had both cars myself. Have you turned to the dark side?? 👎🏼👎🏼 I was a big fan of yours 😢
Not sure with your experience why you say that about the xr6t in terms of its 0-100. The whole thing about the 4.0L is it barely suffers from lag at all. The issue with 0-100 times with a built xr6t is traction. Not lag. My 0-100 times suffer because it just won’t stop spinning. Even when it was on factory power, with a ZF behind an FG, it will light up 1st gear. Absolute weapons. An SS brings torque on way later than a Barra. Love the reviews as always though, thanks mate
There definitely is still a bit of lag compared to a V8.. the Barra is quick regardless of that but it’s there.. remember this was an upgraded turbo as well so it’s not the stock slightly smaller one that spoils quicker.. traction is a big part tho
@BRETT all relative. My tuned g6e if hooking up gets 4 seconds on road and into the 3s on track. Good suspension. Good nitto 9.5 semi slicks. Probably smoke your lancer with the trailer on the back down the freeway too
Had plenty of both types of cars. V8s and turbos. Both special and fun in their own way. I'm actually a JDM fan so in general I'm all over turbos but I must say there's something extra unique and special about sitting in a v8. Most especially when it's cammed. It gives this sense of power that nothing else does. The sound, the car shaking on idle from that big v8 motor with that deep bass rumble. Nothing else like it. Pretty much spot on there, the LS always gets away at the start but the barra always reels them in… usually once the back stops squirming around an gets traction is about the time when they start getting bigger in the mirrors 👌
Holy smokes. I’ve been a passionate Ford man since the mid 70s, and respect to the Barra, but no matter how you tune them they sound poxy. And the ones that only have free flow exhaust are ghastly The V8. Holden, Ford, whatever - nothing beats the sound and feel of the V8
Ford of course, just better all round and far more reliable....That's like asking what tastes better, a nice big old school hamburger, or a plate of lawn clippings. No contest, but there's always going to be the vegans that like eating grass. 😂😂
I’d take the xr6 for power and looks but the commie for sound and fun, the Barra makes good power and I personally love the look of the falcons better (mainly the mk 1’s) but the sound of a V8 and the fun they provide is 10/10
If you would've done this back when they got released you'd get a very different response these days and aussie car is now just appreciated for what it is.
I've always loved the Barra motors, and they can make stupid power quite easily, but there's just no beating the sound of a V8, especially a cammed V8. And for a street car sound is important when most of the time you're sitting in traffic or at the lights or just cruising along. And that rumble without even needing to get on the loud peddle is unmatched.
@@BadManRiRi I’ve always had holdens. Still have my first car vl turbo. Have a vf ss Cammed with around 480whp which is great for the sound. Though have a fgx that the mrs daily drives with 550whp and it’s smoother. Faster. Uses less fuel and with the external gate it sounds so good when you open it up. V8 is kind of obnoxious at times and draws attention at the wrong times.
Both beautiful cars. Kinda just what you like. XR6 Turbo is an awesome car and the commodore ss is no different. Kinda depends whether your into v8s or i6s. I’d take the ss, sounds so good 🤤
without watching the Turbo should smash it. I had an xr6t stock and it moved, traded for a 6.2 ls3 SSV and in stock form the SSV was quicker and easier to drive. Both great cars...
@@connorwichman2506 pretty much. I have an ss and a fgx g6e. Auto fgx manual vf. Two different cars. Ss good if you want to put a show on in traffic with the sound though for speed. Acceleration etc the fgx is so much better. External gate makes it 1000 times more fun to drive than the ss. And when you’re at speed and want to accelerate the v8 is a nugget compared to it. I’ve had v8s for a decade and best thing I did was get a fgx. Way more reliable. Doesn’t run hot like the ls. Better fuel economy with the ability to put down almost 100hp more. Only have it as my son loves the v8 for cursing
Anyone else notice the vic police on the ford screen, must be x hwy patrol car, been flogged if that’s the case explains the work done, I couldn’t look at that every time I got in the car and go to shops , give me the SS any day… paranoia gone instantly

I love your videos so much Ross, so awesome to listen to your opinions and enjoyment in the cars xD Stay safe out there mate.
Thanks, you too!
Pretty much spot on there, the LS always gets away at the start but the barra always reels them in… usually once the back stops squirming around an gets traction is about the time when they start getting bigger in the mirrors 👌
Yup exactly right
The ss first then barra and then if the track is long enough the ss again
Not true.. a F6 has a huge surge of power that hammers the SS.
@@matthoffmann4216 bro did u watch the video
@@hunteranderson8924 yeah I did.. that’s not an F6.. bro
Holy smokes. I’ve been a passionate Ford man since the mid 70s, and respect to the Barra, but no matter how you tune them they sound poxy. And the ones that only have free flow exhaust are ghastly
The V8. Holden, Ford, whatever - nothing beats the sound and feel of the V8
A comparison/review for the top shelf. Both of these cars are the bomb in their own right, and both deserve their cred. Cheers.
Thanks Neil! Appreciate the support
Top shelf? This is more like comparing VB to Tooheys New.
VE HSV GTS is the 6.2 litre LS2 BIG brother to the Little VZ! sibling
Cool location, Brock memorial. Ill take the V8 every time, doesnt matter to me if the 6 is quicker.
You know the spot 🤝🇦🇺
Ford of course, just better all round and far more reliable....That's like asking what tastes better, a nice big old school hamburger, or a plate of lawn clippings. No contest, but there's always going to be the vegans that like eating grass. 😂😂
I’d take the xr6 for power and looks but the commie for sound and fun, the Barra makes good power and I personally love the look of the falcons better (mainly the mk 1’s) but the sound of a V8 and the fun they provide is 10/10
Yup sport on comment mate
The Mk1 FG does look tougher over the Mk2, certainly a future classic!
The FG the win for me .....the VE such a very ugly car overall ...not much in the 0-100 considering the ford is only a six cylinder and holden is a v8
They are very close in it eh
My VE handles better than my old M3
LOL
Regardless, you just can't beat that sound @ 2:24.... so good.
You gotta love a V8
If you would've done this back when they got released you'd get a very different response these days and aussie car is now just appreciated for what it is.
Still a lot of rivalry but yes we are starting to see appreciation for all Aussie made cars now 🙏 well deserved
Both nice cars. But as a SSV owner I know where my votes goin. Great video btw.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love them both! I guess it just comes down to personal preference at the end of the day
Yup 100%
Epic review of 2 Aussie icons. That was a fun day :D
Thanks for your help brother
Should have been ss vs xr8 lol and also idk why Holden did not make a v6 twin turbo. 😢
As a Ford enthusiast I respect the Holdens though I’ve never owned one.
Still beautiful cars
Good stuff gotta love em both
Cammed SS all day long. Sounds way better than the six banger. Hard to beat that idle.
A good cam is something special eh
Great video. You will have to track down a turbo or supercharged LS to drive next 👍
I’m keen on a turbo LS eh!
The VE is easier to get in and out of if your big n tall.
Cannot beat the feeling and sound of a cammed V8! They are a dying bread unfortunately.
It’s sad and true 🥲
I love the power from Australian cars. We never had.proper.power, from the Fords and Vauxhalls in Europe and the U.K.
It’s a shame the Aussie cars never really got shared around the globe
I've had turbo cars and they were fun, but there's nothing quite like a worked V8. Tuff as 💪
It’s a fair statement the noise of a rowdy V8 is hard to pass
as ford lover, i’d take the cammed ss any day of the weak, tougher, cheaper and just and absolute weapon. 👌🏼
That’s a fair call!
In other words your a turn coat
It’s cheaper for a reason. Own one and you’ll see wh
TR6060 bOxEs.
Haha love your videos man
Appreciate it bro
xr6t is way faster and im a holden fan. barra is the best engine
glad you can appreciate both
I've always loved the Barra motors, and they can make stupid power quite easily, but there's just no beating the sound of a V8, especially a cammed V8. And for a street car sound is important when most of the time you're sitting in traffic or at the lights or just cruising along. And that rumble without even needing to get on the loud peddle is unmatched.
A cammed V8 is really something special eh
@ijustcant buyaholdensorry From personal experience if you're not driving like a spanner then even most Cops appreciate a cammed V8.
I’d take the ss, sounds so good 🤤
Yup can’t go wrong with either
Why not just have one of each? ;)
Love a cammed v8, but 6s can also scream some almighty lovely notes too!
@@petezappa8748 that’s the dream! Barra at high rpm can definitely scream some nice engine notes!
Awsome match up ross, my favorite V6 vs my favorite V8 sedan both sounded awsome but nothing beats the sound of a V8.
thanks :)
Straight 6 bud 😊
without watching the Turbo should smash it.
I had an xr6t stock and it moved, traded for a 6.2 ls3 SSV and in stock form the SSV was quicker and easier to drive.
Both great cars...
Thanks for sharing
the ss just sounds so much better
It does
What the fuck ur in Perth I thought you were in america haha😂
I’m in Perth 🇦🇺
You can tell which car Ross likes the best. the turbo must be funnier to drive , but up the cammed ss
Both are so good in their own way
I can’t live with turbo lag. The response from a 6.0 litre naturally aspirated at all revs is so much more satisfying.
The noise is the best from a V8
Barras don't have much lag at all unless you got a massive turbo. My Fg has full boost just after 2k rpm.
The big 4L carries it to boost pretty well.
Yeh must be ex police or the dash is
Thanks for the video!
Lol that xr6t still has the police banner on the dash... "Unlocked".. No "over speep off" displayed... I'd love to buy one like that because when I was working stripping police cars we had to remove that as part of the job.. use some handheld computer device to plug into the OBD2 port, the device was called "Oracle" or something.. long time ago.. around 2014..
Yea ex police car 😅 glad you enjoyed the video
Cant beat that barra
It’s a magical engine
Holden commodore: Dad xr6t keeps whopping me :(
Holden torana: Hold my beer son ;)
Xr6T: Fuck me…
