For traveling in my opinion is 28mm more practical. Tight places and narrow streets get tricky with 40mm. If the city is big with large streets 40mm would be easier to handle, since everything will feel far away. If you sit in a bus you will use 28mm. If I am making a vlogging vedio i would use 40mm but this is not the point of this camera
I actually really like that Ricoh didn't make a big difference between the two models. For one, the GR is pretty close to perfect (I mean sure there's a few things I wish it had if I could get everything I wanted), so just giving it a different lens makes sense. But even better, I'm sick of the artificial changes that companies make in their lineup for marketing purposes that make it so neither camera is what you really want and each has pieces you want. Here Ricoh took a great camera, gave it a new lens because fans asked for it, but didn't take away anything for no reason. 👍
I agree, they really did a nice job! Especially the fact that it is a completely new lens, not sacrificing any quality there… Thanks for your comment mate 🙏
The x model, as I weigh things, negates the value of "snap focus," which is one of the very best features the GR line offers. The in-focus zone is significantly smaller with the 40 compared to the 28 even at, say, f/8. If you need the 40mm perspective you can crop in. If your main focus is portraits, there are better cameras; you really need at least 75mm (equiv.) for good portraits if you want to flatten the perspective. (I have both the GR II and III, among others.). My choice is the standard GR III.
I understand… I do however feel you can still use snap focus at 40mm, even though the in focus area is smaller. Cropping of course makes you lose pixels, so that’s not ideal… if your main goal is to shoot portraits or course you should go with something else entirely but if you put al the pro’s and con’s in the scale, I do really like the X! (And totally respect your choice of course 😉)
@@NielsdeKemp My problem with 40mm (equiv) is it's not ideal for portraits and not ideal for street. It works for street only if you use small apertures for maximum depth of field.
@@RonScibilia but its more ideal for portraits than the non-x version with little more bokeh. and for street you can shoot 2-4 images with the 40mm lense in some seconds and stitch them together easily in LR.
The big realization I came to while watching was that if I want a wider shot on the GRIIIx, I can do a handheld pano (==bigger resolution photos), whereas if I want a tighter shot from a GRIII, I need to crop (==smaller resolution photos). I do believe you've resolved my doubts.
Pano is a great option in still photography, but not when you're capturing people or boats or anything that moves. I am a big fan of higher focal length lenses on my full frame, but for the purpose of the gr, I would prefer the wide angle in this pocketable point and shoot cam.
I would say if you have a dslr with a zoom lens go around and shoot with it set at 28mm for a day and then another day go around at 40mm. See which one is letting you grab the photos that you want. But only use one or the other each day that way you can see if one of them makes you frustrated.
Great video! I've been eyeballing the Ricoh GRIIIx. I really don't need one because I have a Fujifilm X100V, but the size of the Ricoh makes it so tempting. There are times where I leave my camera behind because I don't want to carry it. The fact that the Ricoh can just fit in my pocket is a game-changer. I might just have GAS though 😂
thanks a lot! by your video I finally chose to buy GR3X instead of GR3. GR3X seems to make it easier to focus on things I see. Plus, I am not into a bit of distortion when using 28mm cameras' viewpoint.
Niels, thx for posting the video as I’ve been going back and forth between the GR3 and GR3x and I really like the wider shots of the 28mm compared to,the 40mm on the GR3x so would it be safe to say that if wanted a closer shot of a subject that I should just get closer? Or, am I overlooking some dynamic of focal length in which my simple solution isn’t as simple as it sounds? Thx

40mm is considered by many to be around the ideal street shooting focal length giving a balance between 50mm and 28mm, so just wide enough, but gives you more ability to fill the frame in some situations too. Pentax used to do 43mm lens that was very well regarded. Personally I prefer 35mm with a larger aperture, so I have an RX1Rii. Far more expensive, but it does have a full frame sensor and a superior Zeiss Sonnar lens
I was a late to the party. I bought the GRIII X first late last year then was blown away - a little and a literal pocketable camera with a crop sensor that you can bring with you anytime, anywhere (well, except on extreme weather situations). Then after a month, I realized I need something wider. Then I bought the GR III. With these cameras, I used my A7R IV less and less as time passes by... 😅
My only wish is that Mr Ricoh should have given more thought and launching a camera with a “35mm” and in so doing spare us a lot of dithering…Nice video thank you very much.
Thanks - This is the best comparison video between the two cameras I have seen so far. It would be very helpful if you did another video comparing snap focus, because from the charts I’ve seen, the depth of field of the new camera is much shallower than the original, so I’m presuming snap focus will not be as effective?
Because of the different focal length, the depth of field is shallower… Snap focusing is just as effective but you will get a narrower field of focus. You could use your aperture to get the field of view you like. It just acts different, also because at 40mm you might pick subjects just a little bit further away 👌 Thanks for your comment!
I tried this camera and does anyone find the focusing a bit difficult in low light conditions? Amazing IQ btw I was very surprised when the pictures came out.
Hey, great video here. I've already got the GR3 and alike to other people commenting here I just really dig it! This new GR3X is definitely tantalising, especially with the new telephoto lens adaptor. If it's in camera settings, hope you don't mind me asking, what are your filter/camera settings you used? I really like the colours and tones. I have a GRD-IV. Obviously it's not 2022 state-of-the-art. However. . . It has some charms. The small sensor and 6mm lens gives huge depth-of-field, which is sometimes just what the doctor ordered for street photography. It's tiny and lightweight even compared with other GR-series models. It has sensor stabilization like the GR III, but also a built-in flash like the GR II. It has native 4:3 aspect ratio, which I personally am fond of. It also conveniently uses the same battery as my GR II. (The GR III is the odd one out with a different battery.)
Interesting video for me, thank you, but not yet convincing enough. Why ? I want to change my GRII that I take on ultralight hiking. it is already versatile: portraits, plants, architectural details, landscapes with foreground, landscapes assembled in Lightroom for beautiful panoramas, etc. So... a GRIII or a GRIIIx? not yet decided because the assembly of the panoramas seems to me very possible with the GRIIIx. Keep the GRII as a 2nd box? Too much dust on the sensor. an advice ?

Size yes, but not sensor quality. why would it degrade? you still have the same dynamic range and all the rest or the superior features, just on a smaller CROPPED size.
Are you saying that a micro 4/3 will deliver the same dynamic range of the APS-C ?

How is 40mm more generic than 28mm when 28 is what smartphones mostly shoot in?
you just answered your own question
It seems anti consumer to not allow the x to shoot wider or the non-x to shoot more tele. Pretty obvious that Ricoh is trying to tempt people to buy both cameras, rather than buying one with an adapter lens that gets you close to the other camera..
The whole existence of the IIIx is because the consumer asked for it… To call it anti consumer, don’t agree with that :)
@@NielsdeKemp i think the cameras themselves are great and a service of them to offer. I know it's pretty niche to begin with. I just don't like their accessory decisions
I was thinking about the conversion lens too. Couldn’t Ricoh make a tele lens for the 28 that would make it a 40?
GRII has 35mm/50mm crop.
Yeah, you can crop in post as well… You lose pixels though…
So does the GRIII and you’ve got more pixels to play with.
I would definitely get the GRIII and use the crop feature ahead of the GRIIIx, if you can’t move back you’re buggered.
I honestly do not think anything can touch the Canon m200 or the m6II with a fast 22mm pancake, or even faster wide angle lense.
28mm…
Get your hand on noth and try to compare, so this clip was for nothing.
NON X FOE ME
40 mm is boring
Ok 🤷♂️
none at all! ricoh is no longer an innovation! They keep putting out the same junk!
For the love of God eliminate the unnecessary distracting annoying background music. You are probably adding it because everyone else does. Bad decision. Be a leader. When educating - educate. Let others entertain ....
