- The Blackpool Pleasure Beach 2024 season has seen the park's most iconic roller coaster, The Big One, lose its record of the UK's tallest roller coaster to Hyperia at Thorpe Park. Posts and reports from Pleasure Beach Resort spokespeople including managing director Amanda Thompson confirm that the park are currently in the planning stages for a new ride to replace the Grand Prix attraction. Join me as I discuss the possibility that this ride may be a means to reclaim The Big One's former height record from Hyperia, along with other potential means via which Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort could achieve this.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is an amusement park located in the seaside town of Blackpool in Lancashire, England United Kingdom. It is home to over 30 different rides and attractions, 10 of which are roller coasters! Notable rides at the park include Icon, the UK’s first full circuit double launched roller coaster and Big One, the UK’s tallest roller coaster. The park celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2021!

Blackpool PB roasting Thorpe Park with trucks was not on my bingo card 💀
You missed the oppurtunity to start the video with "This week saw the opening and closure of Hyperia which broke two records then just broke".
The smart move for BP would have been to have RMC or GCI take on the Grand National and then spend some time developing something wild to go where BO is. That way you get a pair of high capacity destination coasters while you build something taller, faster and more stable in high winds than the Big One.
I think three things to consider here are 1) as you’ve said BPB don’t seem to be flush with cash for big investments right now, and 2) in her tweet and the press talk afterwards they referred to a new attraction or ride, that haven’t said roller coaster. Finally Hyperia won’t just take the record for the UKs tallest rollercoaster it is also the UKs tallest ride. Add to all of that the space the Gran Prix will leave behind and I’m afraid to say I think we are looking at a 300 to 400 foot tall star flyer
Difficult to say but I feel if they utilised the surrounding space (the Avalanche area / dome building / Planet Rock / Bowl-a-Drome) a coaster is definitely possible.

I was thinking of that too when BPB said about it being one foot taller that people who live in glass houses probably shouldn't throw stones since it's technically 23 foot taller lol
Blackpool Pleasure Beach should get a B&M Giga Dive Coaster to reclaim the UK's Tallest Record from Hyperia at Thorpe Park.
A dive coaster would complement Pleasure Beach's line-up very well, and likely wouldn't require too much space!

A “giga dive coaster” wouldn’t beat Hyperia. Yes, a giga dc is something never seen before but it isn’t likely to be built.

I think an Intamin launch with tophat isn’t out of the question, it would be very different to icon with a short ride experience, powerful launch and much taller height, like comparing maverick to TT2 at Cedar point

How funny of them to place trucks outside Thorpe. Do you think any other parks in the uk might try to compete? not sure they’ll have the funding and with Alton having the height limit.
For me, I would like to see either a tilt coaster, dive coaster or single rail coaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
Don't they already _have_ a single-rail racing coaster themed around horse racing, or have they removed that since last April?...
Either a Big One RMC making it the world's tallest and fastest RMC, or a brand new T rex. A big one re-do would be the cheapest way to get a new elite ride though as the foundations and footer etc are half the cost of a coaster, especially such a big one (lol)

What a great video this was. I didn't realise just how old either the big one or avalanche was. I can remember avalanche being built as a kid. I thinking back then how great it looked.
Pleasure Beach should RMC the big one, all that space would make for a great hybrid

If blackpool get the record, I bet thorpe will make stealth taller and make a top thrill 2 clone but has more of a layout after the tophat and of course a spike, could smash the new blackpool coaster by 200ft

Interesting and well narrated video.
Parks across the Planet compete with their claims and that's the nature of their business. Each knows what is going on with the others and they are aware that for two or.three years a park will have the ''limelight', especially seen throughout the U.S. a new rides exceeds all others by one or two feet. In the U.K. we lack space but there are other considerations when it comes to a new ride, and it should be noted how the public votes..........do you ever see a short queue for the Big One?
In fairness if they just added a few struts or whatever (I'm sure its that easy!) they could shift The Big One up say 50 feet and reclaim the crown. Shouldn't be too hard lol. Oh yeah I do hope they RMC The Big One with Steel Vengeance style inversions. Yes please. Thanks for the video.

She needs to make some profit through the park first before investing in a gimmick. They also had been lying about Big One being 235ft tall for 30 years.
People have been getting away with _that_ in dating apps/websites for the best part of 25 years, so Amanda isn't really going against the grain there... 😇
It used to be that all the good roller coasters were up north (eg BPB and Alton Towers). Thorpe Park and other southern parks have put a stop to the northern monopoly on good roller coasters. Good for them I say.
I wish it wasn't the case by I can't see BPB doing anything spectacular to beat any records. If they were going to try and beat the ride height record it would probably be done on the cheap, a taller drop/shot tower to replace Iceblast would be my guess.
I know Hyperia had a rocky start, but now it seems to be working a lot better now, in fact it rained a few times at Thorpe the day I went on Hyperia and that didn't cause problems to my knowledge, and by now, I consider it the most intense rollercoaster I've been on yet, my god the Gs you get on Hyperia..
A tilt coaster wouldn’t be a world’s first because the one at six flags Qiddiya and the one at Cota Land would probably open first. I really don’t think that they need the tallest. I think a nice whippet RMC or Intamin single rail would fit in really nicely. Also, just because some of the structure on the big one might look similar to a wooden structure, some of the ride uses traditional pillars and also, the lattice is probably a very different style to the wooden ones so may need a totally new track design from RMC which would cost a lot of money.
Pleasure Beach can try to beat the record again but Thorpe Park and Merlin Entertainments went a long long way to get the record and they want the record. Pleasure Beach's annual revenue is approx £115mn and Thorpe Park's is £266mn - so while both have enough money to build huge coasters, Thorpe Park can build larger coasters and / or battle for the record longer. Merlin Entertainments (who own Thorpe Park) has an approx annual revenue of £2.1bn so they can really do anything. Pleasure Beach can try to regain the record, but if Thorpe and Merlin really want the record, they can't be stopped easily.

The big one is outdated garbage now, good first drop but the rest of the ride is a snore fest, plus its still rough even after the retrack. Get rid of it.
It’s pretty much a landmark at this point. It’ll be a very long time before it’s gone.
In my opinion they should get rid of it, redo the ride with more airtime, more inversions and call it the bigger one.
The retracking has ruined the big one so yes they can demolish it now.

Their only option would be a intamin LSM launch coaster with top hat as they dont have the room. They dont have to funds to go breaking records. They dont have a unlimited pot of money like merlin. If they did take the record back thorpe would just reimagine stealth and make it taller
I think the text about beating hyperia by 1 foot is just some banter from pleasure beach. I really dont think that theme parks will be angry at each other and publicly say it.
It's also a lie, since it's only 213ft tall, but they cleverly put the van outside thorpe park and changed the statistics on their website to make people believe the big one is also faster at 85mph when it's actually 74mph.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort Lancashire Whatever. 😂 In all honesty, a Mack Stryker with their new punchy beyond vertical LSMs would be awesome. I’d also like to see RMC retrack Grand National.
nothing will ever replace the feel of a good old wooden roller-coaster. Maybe they should do a wooden coaster that does have inverts and loops.

PB dont have the money to be building hyper coasters. A Single Rail RMC or Intamin hot racer makes more sense and would be unique in the UK.

There's a surprising amount of space available if you consider using the vacant spaces _between_ and _within_ the areas of the existing attractions. 📍
Just think what you could put in alongside the section of disused monorail track that's now serving as the conduit bearer for Icons launch supply... 🚈💨😉

If BPB wanted a coaster that was not only _taller_ than Hyperia but also _faster_ *and* bringing in something (Probably) never seen on a coaster before, I'd happily design something that would break everything _except_ bones. I would love to see a new family thrill coaster a Lightwater Valley but I just don't see it happening as it appears they're aiming to target themselves towards a very young audience (similar to Gulliver's parks).
Light water valley shouldn't even be mentioned in the conversation anymore. It's not the same anymore. It is now just a small tiny park with temporary funfair rides. Light water valley was butchered and there is no coming back.

Pleasure Beach is my local park and has a lot of sentimental value to me but Thorpe is a very close second as far as UK parks are concerned!

The Big One is only 235ft ASL (above sea level), it is 213ft from ground level. Hyperia is 236ft from ground NOT sea level so Hyperia is taller by 23ft, not 1ft. Get the facts right Pleasure Beach!
I am sorry blackpool pleasure beach but measuring from sea level is low key cheating the first drop is actually more like 205ft so hyperia first drop is more than one ft bigger

I don't think they're going to get a new rollercoaster. There's not enough room. That being said, they still might break the height record. I think they might go for a drop tower. Something like Falcons fury at Busch gardens or maybe even apocalypse, which was removed not long ago. Manufacturer of choice would of course be intamin.

@andrewbarrett42 Not unless they get rid of an older one first. In this case, though, there still probably isn't, even though they're removing a ride for this. That's why I think it's gonna be a drop tower if anything.

@andrewbarrett42 I don't know the specific amount of space available, but if there's even speculation about it being a rollercoaster, there's probably enough room for a flat ride. Drop towers also take up a tiny footprint. Take a look at detonator at thorpe park for example.

The Big One is absolutely shite. First drop, then just a couple of minutes of a rough rickety element free tram ride, a complete joke of a Coaster. Take it down and build a proper hyper coaster with forces speed and airtime.
