I've been following and interacting with both these last two years, and I do fully concur with the statement in the main comment
Thank you so much for having me on the channel. It was really good to discuss all these issues with you.
Interestingly, as much as I sympathise with the Kosovars (having had a front row view of what was happening there since 1980s), I was also critical of the recognition of Kosovo's independence in 2008 because I believed it would be used as a precedent for various bad actors. A am always a pessimist and boy I hate to be right...
It should also be pointed out, and you forgot this, that Crimea and Kosovo are no longer comparable, as Kosovo was not absorbed by Albania, while Crimea was absorbed by Russia, which means that Russia has gone a big step further (from new independent entities to blatant border changes). On the other hand, the Ukrainian oblasts (Donbas) were never autonomous entities, so this cannot be compared to the situation in Kosovo and Crimea, which were second-order autonomous entities.
This was a very interesting episode. I would say that the most fascinating part is the very end. Where you say, yes the Invasion of Iraq was bad, but there is still a sovereign Iraq, there is still a sovereign Libya, and a sovereign Afghanistan. No obviously the one example you seem to "forget" is the one you actually mentioned earlier, Serbia and its break away province of Kosovo.
Is there a sovereign Serbia with here provinces in tact as promise to her by the victorious allies in 1945, for her suffering in WW2? No there is not, but what you see is a Serbian army mobilizing ready to defend her right, backed up by China and Russia.
@@markopinteric comparable yes, equal no. I would say that the crime is not absorbing the newly "independent" territory but creating the independence with the use of arms in the first place. Weather the concurring power such as Israel or Russia actually absorbs the territory or weather its keeps as a puppet state plundered for its resources as was the case with Iraq, and to a lesser extent Afghanistan or Libya is secondary to the question.
Most of the world is looking forward to a systemic change, the status quo is not working for the majority. 70 countries are in debt distress. 40 countries are under economic sanctions. In the world happiness index map Africa and most of Asia and Latin America are blue (the color used represent misery). Only China has been able to improve its economic status in the past 20 years. Global trade favors few nations. Your views are one sided and reflect a western POV. Western Europe + NA are only 10% of the world's population. The global south positions are probably justified. A better system is attainable.
I don’t particularly have much time for Johnathon but I enjoyed this interview. I found you a pretty level headed guy who can look at mistakes that have been made by Western Governments and know how it hasn’t done them any favours. I could see if it was up to you, you would have done things differently and not got us into this mess.
Anyway, Here’s to the new multipolar world we’re entering into and hoping people can be satisfied with a bit of shared power and understand their place in the world.
I do feel that when the dust settles people all over the world will be better off.
Unfortunately for Ukraine they would have been better off negotiating back in March/April of 2022.
They could have remained intact.
Mr. Ker-Lindsay is right to question those who believe that Ukraine must sit down with the invader, who has no intention of stopping. RU may pause to ‘catch it breath’ but they will not stop, given their investment in time, money, power & prestige (sunk cost).

What concerns me about the Ukraine War are the parallels of the breakdown of the post WW1 League of Nations
We saw a gradual chipping away of the objectives of the LofN as various nations started to wage territorial wars and the LofN just stood by and did nothing. This just encouraged other states to take their own actions
It can be argued that these actions set the road to WW2
for low bar Id wish there would be that kind of institution to peacefully settle regional disputes and possible legit referendums to join other country, as currently warfare seems still the way to "solve" those like in Kosovo case... that would not exist without violent long war. too often these are ignored and then fighting starts. I bet there would be many cases in world to use this tool if it were present, as post soviet countries inherited very bad borders causing these conflicts.
America is the nation that is flouting international law.

Iraq, Kosovo, Libya, staying 20 years in Afghanistan, Israel are all examples of foreign policy disasters.
I support Ukraine but there are millions and millions of Americans are sick of adventures like Iraq and Afghanistan. Trillions spent and for what?

Kosovo is a bad example. Ensuring independence of Kosovo was a good thing. It was just and fair.
Iraq was illegal, in Kosovo we were essentially conned, but worst of all was Libya. I still contend that the intervention in Libya was right but we only did half a job, we abandoned our responsibilities once Gaddafi was deposed and did nothing to assist libyans with rebuilding the country.
great interview with jame KL . I disagree with him on many political points but when it comes to international relations he's a knowledgeable, well spoken man able to communicate his points clearly and concisely. If you haven't already I recommend watching his weekly videos.

Standards for maritime laws seem to be going ignored by the black and grey fleets transporting oil for Russia. These ships are uninsured by reputable companies and are a threat to the environment. The Danish Straits are used by Black Sea ships and they are allowed to cross unchallenged.
Only the UN can sanction countries. The American and western sanctions are illegal. Russia has insured its fleet of tankers. Lloyds' is no longer the sole insurer. China and other countries are insuring tankers. Are you claiming that the only reputable insurance companies are in the west? You should really contemplate on what you have just posted.
There are very few maritime laws lol. Danish Straits are international waters and any ship can pass freely. These ships actually are insured, it's just not Western insurance. It's a big world, and remember the West is only 12%. We have to realize we must work with the world and often we will not get our way anymore. A good step to regulating the oceans would be pressuring nations like the US to sign onto UNCLOS.

Thanks. Great point. Yes, there's a lot that Western countries have never really faced up to. But I think there is a lot more consideration of these points in the West than elsewhere. For example, Russia has never had a national conversation about its imperial past and all the atrocities that were carried out. This doesn't excuse what happened in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc. But there is a greater awareness of it than in many other places.

Very interesting and extremely complicated topic, that needs to be addressed in parallel with Ukraine war analysis. It really deserves much more than a very compressed 45 minutes. Still, what you discussed in this very short stream was very deep and topics have been selected very precisely as always. Many thanks again for your priceless efforts. All interviews are very deep and unbelievably honest and so independent. Rare in nowadays mass media analyses and very different indeed.

Referring to what Mr Ker-Lindsay says at the beginning (5:00) - a very good example of a real policy of subjugation and actual annexation of other countries was the takeover of Poland and other Central European countries by the USSR in the aftermath of the Second World War, which was actually accepted by the US and the UK. Thus, this "19th-century concept" was still in use after the Second World War, and right in the process of establishing the United Nations. If the beast has tasted blood once, let us not be surprised that it does so again. Thank you for a valuable discussion and greetings from Poland.

One can at least argue that the "West" did not act out of a desire to conquer territory in Kosovo. And it was never the goal to destroy Iraq as a state but to topple the regime and introduce a more liberal regime which turned out to be a futile and naive endavour.
We are such a dangerous and immature species.
One way to try and get out of this horrible mess is to get rid of permanent seats at the UN Security Council. It should function more like the General Assembly.

I wonder where you are living. Having been around the world I have never met any drunken farmers. They have always been very hard working, resourceful people. Sadly they are often not the happiest people either given how hard it is to make a living farming.

@@SiliconCurtain I am a citizen of the world with no affiliation with Russia, Ukraine nor any other country. I try to observe the world from an independent perspective in a balanced way as much as I can. I admire independent thinkers as James Ker-Lindsay.
It is my view that USA has been for very long time an unchallenged hegemon in charge and leading so-cold 'Free West'. It ignored everyone on the planet (including the rest of Free West), if the narrative didn't suit them. In another words, they did whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. USA controlled the mainstream media, governments in the Free West and as such were able to justify whatever they wanted. Other countries that quietly or less quietly disagreed with USA would be proclaimed as non-democratic, barbarians or whatever else and were dismissed as a 'bucket of deplorables', as per Hillary's infamous expression. And that attitude is now biting them back. A bucket of deplorables - 'Global South' does not support USA. The war in Ukraine is seen by them as a war against USA and by extension, the collective Free West, against whom they had grudge for a long time.
It is a bad luck that Ukraine is caught up in the cross-fire in this battle - it could have been some other country. By Global South, Russia is seen as a tool that can successfully confront USA on their behalf - nothing more. Personally, I believe that Global South very much empathize with Ukraine but they do not express that openly because resentment against USA is much stronger. In an unfortunate way, Ukraine is a collateral damage in a war of Global South against USA.
Now that China has risen and came to their help, Global South feels more protected and is more confident to express its feelings.
Even though rare, there are some descending voices against USA in the Free West, I think that there will be more once the war ends.

Has anyone taken seriously the elevation of status and legitimacy given to people not worthy of a charge for a box of pencils. We, in civil society have not formulated a methodology that prevents the psychopaths attracted to power and its mechanisms from access to our systems. Leaving the world in the hands of a room full of 10 year old good ole boys doesn't seem very wise.

Good to see James on the channel. I really enjoy his channel. I don't always agree with him, but I always find him interesting and stimulating.
The territorial integrity of states is a big problem. The fact of the matter is that many of the boundaries of the current states in the world were drawn by European imperial powers. This is true even in Europe. The funny thing is that the Ukraine situation is not one of these, and yet is the impetus for the discussion.
Just looking at Europe, you have the breakup of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Africa is rife with such situations, as is the Middle East. China and India have a border which is not called a border, but the "line of actual control" or LAC. The Durand Line, the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan was similarly drawn by the British and now hotly contested. China also claims parts of Russia, their putative ally and friend, and the list goes on.
Erm who do you think drew the borders of Ukraine? Russia: a European imperial power!

Actually, the excuse Russia used for taking over Crimea and the Donbas.is basically similar to, say Iraq. Ethnic issues. The Soviets had a policy of Russifying the country. There is talk about issues with Kazakhstan along the same lines. I should have thought of that.

Glad James is addressing West's past not so good record and mistakes such as Iraq which I thought from day 1 was wrong and watched the first night of bombing that killed 10,000 civilians. However as the West pulled back, I remember all the criticism of Obama for not getting involved in Syria and Russia going in. How long can you hold those mistakes up?
The bill comes due. The sad thing is that no lessons have been learnt. Is Russia really the threat? What about NATO and the US? Is China really a threat? China is building stuff around the world while the West sell wars and divisions. Wtf do you think is gonna happen.
All administrations which commit war crimes should be prosecuted under the laws of their own countries, which have ratified the conventions.
Sadly the SCOTUS invented presidential immunity, as well as a "right to lie".
Just a wild guess as to what the future historiography will look like, but perhaps this is just the end of the series of systemic wars beginning in the early 20th century and ending in the early 21st.

so this resembles 1600s and 30 year war then? it ended 1648 with people gathering when they had enough to make deal. It is made comparison somewhere. that is longest war I can remember from history that is not ancient. all wars in 1900s seem to have gotten longer and longer. 10 years aint that unusual anymore(afghanistan, vietnam, Iraq sort of, hunt for terrorism...).

I find it interesting that James contrasts "economic interests" with "global, wider interests", In the end, it all comes down to economic interests. That is an ironclad law that many people in the international relations/diplomacy field tend to get wrong.
What was the reason for the expansion of the British Empire? Economics. Why did the UK eventually withdraw? It was no longer cost effective. You can look at other empires in the past, and see the same dynamic.
Why do you think the US populace is no longer interested in the international order? The sacrifices US workers made to help cement the order were massive. It may have been a good idea, and the low cost option at the time, but this is no longer true. By continuing it far beyond the original goal, to contain and deter the Soviet Union, was madness. In the end, that policy only enriched our enemies. The US, like few other countries, has other options.

This is a false argument. Of course Kosovo shall be independent. Serbia tormented the population there. Place the blame where it belongs. At Serbia and Milosovic.

I think it could be simply said that Russia is embracing a re-colonial model of foreign relations. Eliminating Ukraine is the ultimate form of this. The west for the most part has expressed or exercised power for power's sake (large economic interests) but not for colonization. Russia is thinking about a Ruzziki Mir and the U.S. is still dealing with integration (i.e. economic agreements) much as the EU did with Europe.
This is a key difference. Rational, economic imperialism is terrible, but does not seek to erase the territories it seeks to dominate. Russia is not economically rational, does not care, and seeks to dominate for its own sake. Where it can’t do this, it erases…
@@SiliconCurtain Agree, it is much like feudal or plantation economies, it encapsulates all within its domain and enslaves those inside its borders.
The RF will use whatever convenient arguments it can make, they ignore the Serbian genocide which was enabled by Serbian control of a larger share of the Yugoslav army, because of control of extra regions not constitutionally autonomous.
The idea that perfect observation of rules allowing the eradication of Kosovan Albanians after previous genocide in Yugoslavia would later persuade a law disregarding dictator to respect Ukraine's border decades later is ludicrous.
Remember Saddam Husein, he attacked Iraq's neighbour Iran aiming to take southern oil fields, ran up huge war debt to the Gulf states, then demanded Kuwait forgive loans but also accept demands on their oil fields by Iraq.
That happened before Kosovo and a year even before the military coup in Moscow which led to the dissolution of the USSR. So what western imperfection will be cited as the cause, or is it what dictators do when they believe they can get away with it?
The reality is hard power tells and military leaders in the Sahel will be tempted to enrich themselves in coups, just as Russian oil money was used to corrupt people in London, Paris and Berlin; Oligarchs in Ukraine and elsewhere were usually friendly to Russia.
Observance of principles and pacifism doesn't count for much when an army is at the door. The general order post 1990 reflected economic and political realities, which were weakened hugely by the mistaken invasion of Iraq 2003 and then the financial crisis caused by lax banking regulation. As Mark Carney explained, giving loans was counted as productive without assessment of the financial risks.
The reality is, there is an international movement of the wealthiest with client media and politicians to exert political power and enrich themselves, leading to unhealthy concentration of wealth and weakened governance. They don't like the multi-lateral institutions and government cooperation because the strategy of divide and rule works in their interests. So like pre-war a loose group of authoritarian leaders with business support reinforce each other and use donations to political extremes and propaganda to soften effective resistance.
Few people stick to principles when an opportunity for vast wealth and power presents itself.
It turned out the genocide was executed by the Albanians who the CIA and MI6 bankrolled. The Intervention by NATO was illegal. The UN did not sanctioned the invasion just like the Iraq invasion by George W. Bush. You need to do some research .
What about the Turkish occupation of the northern part of Cyprus in 1974? Obviously a breech of international law. But the Turks are still there, aren't they?

No, you can't. Russia will veto any SC vote. I know the strange theories about throwing Russia out or arguing it isn't a member. It is all wishful thinking. No country is going to go along with this as they know that if they then face any legal changes, they might find their positions challenged.

It simply left a federation, with 14 other republics, of which all other non-UN members joined the UN in 1991-1992.

Yes. When Russia invades Ukraine all manner of sanctions immediately. When Israel levels Gaza, mealy mouthed condemnation. That's a hypocrisy often referred to but it isn't a perfect parallel. Ukraine didn't attack Russia in any way.
