BookswithEmilyFox The Inheritance Cycle. I found the first two books to be excruciatingly boring

Started with the Black Company by Cook. Read the first omnibus, didn't grab me. Written it off.
Amber chronicles by Zelazny. Had the omnibus, finished the first book.. bored me no end.

ooooh interesting concept. for me: heroes of olympus cos that finale was terrible, to all the boys i've loved before was not worth it and it's not a traditional series but every book in becky albertalli's creekwood series, aka the simon vs world, just gets worse by the book 😬

I agree, but I only enjoyed the parts that have been turned into the original radio play (in said radio play format). I didn't like reading the fifth one. The humor doesn't work for me when written down, but it does when it's performed well by a full cast with a bunch of sound effects. I love that stuff (probably why love the audiobooks from Graphic Audio).

I have an idea for a video, I'm hoping at least ONE of my fave booktubers will do:
    Best Audio Books
I just started listening to audio books... And I find its great for rereading (I'm working through wheel of time right now... Which is HIGHLY recommend as an audio book because the narrators are so amazing! - and I agree!) but I don't really know what else is great or what isn’t...
And why or why not do YOU enjoy an audio vs physical...

    Book recs with dragons:
Temeraire by Naomi Novik---Historical fantasy of the Napoleonic Wars...with dragons. Start with His Majesty's Dragon/Temeraire (depends on the edition). Very sweet and charming, similar vibes to The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. 9 books and completed
The Realm of the Elderlings series by Robin Hobb---Epic fantasy with several series set in the same world. Start with The Farseer Trilogy, the first book being The Assassin's Apprentice. When the bastard of a prince gets Fitz is the main character, and I doubt you'll like him but the books really shine when he's with other people. There aren't a lot of dragons in this one, but it's the start to a world where dragons are important. It can be rather bleak at times. There's a total of 16 books in this world, and everything out currently is finished.

I used to always feel the need to finish books or series, but this year I'm making an effort to not finish things I don't care for and I'm having a much better time. Personally I didn't care for the infernal devices series so I'm not reading the last book and I'll be giving the series away to my library so someone else can hopefully enjoy them :)

There's a series that just started and it's by Elliot Brooks who is a booktuber. I'm not sure if you've heard of it, but it's called Peace and Turmoil and it's an adult high fantasy and it has this amazing dragon companion and it reminds me of Eragon because the dragon communicates with humans through thoughts but it's 10 times better because the writing is actually very good. The dragon has a very sarcastic personality sometimes and I love it. I'm halfway through the book now and would recommend it so far! A Natural History of Dragons is also good.

The lady's guide to petticoats and piracy (sequel to gentleman's guide) follows monty's sister, so it's more of a companion than a true sequel. The characters from the first book do show up from time to time but mostly it's Felicity's own story. Idk if that changes your choice to not read it but I just wanted to point it out, just in case :)

My go-to recommendation for dragons is always going to be the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Who was also the author of two sci-fi series that I've read at least part of and have every intention of finishing. 'The Rowan' books, which I read almost all of them (I read them out of order and confused myself so I need to reread them in the correct order) and the Catteni books, the first of which is 'Freedom's Landing'. I can't vouch for the other three books in the series as I haven't read them yet, but they are very high on my tbr.

I read Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr years ago when Inheritance was almost released. I know I started reading it, but I had trouble continuing. Right now I'm scared that if I eventually continue reading (or re-reading it) I won't like it as much. Especially since I was 15-16 myself when I first read it.
The biggest problem might be that I read it in Dutch back then, and I'm starting to think they made a lot of structural changes while translating.

BEST dragon series ever is the Heartstrikers series by Rachel Aaron. It starts with Nice Dragons Finish Last. I absolutely love it! Huge powerful dragon family led by a cruel and controlling mother. They can take human form. All her clutches have names staring with the same letter, and out main character is part of J clutch. The world building is amazing and complex, but not at all confusing. I read probably 100 books between reading the first and second books in the series and had NO PROBLEM remembering details and where the characters left off. I think you might really enjoy it! Audio versions are great!

I agree about so much of this. Hitchhiker's Guide is a book I did enjoy, but the rest of the series is so boring. Warcross is so bland, I totally agree. I do plan on continuing with the Gentleman's Guide series, because the second book is from the sister's POV and she's ace, so I can totally enjoy that. Eragon is a series I really did love, but now that I'm re-reading it, I'm seeing more of the flaws and such. (Though the worldbuilding in that series is something I enjoy, it's the characters I'm less impressed by nowadays.)

I started the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik and really like it, but honestly most of my love is for the dragons which are the best thing to happen to me this year lol. One series with dragons that I don't hear talked about is Mistress of Dragons, by Margaret Weis (actually the title of the first book) as well as her collaborations with Robert Krammes and Tracy Hickman. Disclaimer: haven't read the Krammes books myself, yet. Then there's Timothy Zahn's stab at a sci-fi dragon in Dragonback Bargain, which has been on my TBR for a while. It's more YA, and the "dragon" isn't the classic kind by a long way.

Honestly, you’re not missing out on anything in the ‘to all the boys I’ve loved before’ trilogy. I read the 3 of them this year (and recently) & literally can’t remember anything that happened heh oops. Will probably watch the movies though.

Ok I understand that you are not so hot for Naomi Novik but I have so far read two novels on her Temerarie series and I really like them (not really a fan of dragons but they were very interesting in this one).

If you want to read about Dragons then you need to continue on with the Throne Of Glass series! I hated book one but I'm currently listening to the audio book of book 5 and it's really good!

If you are still looking for a series on dragons, I recommend A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. The Audible version was very well done and the books include a illustrations of the dragons and characters!

Tessa Dawn Dragons Realm Series -- I really loved these if you haven't heard of this Author or the Series. She does have another Series that is about Vampires that I feel is really good!!

I used to read True Blood and some other vampire series when I was younger, and I ate it all up in no time. (never finished either tho, and now I don't care to anymore.)
I've also found out I'm not really that into series. I prefer stand-alones. Maybe because I have trouble focusing, so I get tired hearing of the same people/same universe for too long. So when I'm done and put the book down, I want to be completely done with it 😬

Cruel Prince was a bit of a mess for me. I only really cared for it after like the 90% mark? That was basically too little too late for me but my friend made the effort of reading second and said was good so I might read the last 2 once it's out? Lol maybe I'm just in denial lmao.
I can't imagine Illuminae or any of them as an audiobook. I loved them though :( Ending was disappointing so if you only thought Illuminae was okay then yeah don't bother lol.
I have a love and hate relationship with Sarah J. Maas. I basically refuse to finish her series? It's like, they start out bad but it's so interesting so you hope they get better, and then they do! But then it's like too much? And friend wasn't a fan of last book so I just haven't bothered either ha.
I keep meaning to get around to Gentleman's Guide but it keeps not happening.
I keep looking for Dragon books too! I'll let you know if I end any worthwhile lol. Who knew this was so difficult??

Lol! I think we ALL know how you feel about Eragon. Ive never read it and thanks to you ive spared myself from some pretty cringy YA stuff. I dont usually read YA for that exact reason but i did enjoy Scythe immensely.

You could try reading „The waking Fire“ by Anthony Ryan. It‘s a good fantasy book about dragons and how people can use their blood to recieve special skills like being super fast.

I actually think the books from the Inheritance Cycle get better, though :) I'm a very slow reader, and by the last book I was so engaged I finishing 800 pages in a month (which for me is crazy). However Eragon was really slow and boring, and this was my first ever high fantasy series, and I read a translated version of it and I could still see the series' flaws although I personally loved the overall thing.

I slogged my way through A Discovery Of Witches as an audio book (26 hours!) & was gutted to discover it was only the first book in a series! Bogged down in details, there’s no way I’m reading any more.

Emily you didn’t mention the Throne of Glass series, does that mean you’re going to continue? If you do I can’t wait to see how you feel about the second book because it didn’t get good until the third book in my opinion

I saw the title of the video and immediately thought of Hitchhikers guide. I know you're not a fan and while I think the humor is kinda cheeky and I didnt hate it either. I read up to book 4 and had less and less idea of what was going on as I got farther into it. Book 1 was okay, I at least somewhat followed the premise but in books 2 and 3 I couldnt tell you what happens at all. Dont worry about not continuing this series.

  • @TheDevler23
    @TheDevler23 5 лет назад +1

I don't think you understand what the Hitchiker's Guide "series" is. It isn't a continuation. It was a series of radio shows that are the same story, but different. They were meant to be different stories for the different mediums. The other "stories in the series" are basically transcriptions of the radio shows. They also are nowhere near as long as the main book. In my opinion, some of the side stories are better than the main one.
Not judging you for not liking it, absurd humor isn't everyone's cup of tea. Just clarifying a misconception about the "series" overall.

I hope The Cruel Prince series or whatever it’s called will end really good cause of the cliffhanger in the second book, like in an intense, kick ass way and not in a romantic, tie everything together conveniently kind of way... the latter is usually what happens in YA fantasy though so I don’t have high hopes lol

I feel you on Hitchhikers...I loved the book but the jokes are definitely absurdist and deadpan; as is most of Douglas Adams' humour. It's definitely a more "British humour" in that it is often dry and the jokes are funny, as you said, "out of context". I struggle to explain to people what Hitchhikers is about but I love it; it has a special place in my heart

I read the second book of the ACOTAR series and I just had it. The first book was barely enough for me to read the second.
YOU was very messed up and I had to take a break from Joe to even think about the second book. I probably won't pick it up.
I never read the vampire academy and I couldn't even get through the second chapter of The Cruel Prince. Just kind of gave it up and I won't bother with it.
I could go on but not sure if you want your comments to be books themselves lol. Found your channel and plan on seeing your other videos. Thanks!!

The P.S I still love you book. You say nothing happens for half the book. It's been a long time since I read it but that did remind me a lot of the last Harry Potter book. I was shocked they not only got two movies out of the book but also how good it was.

For years I always thought of a dragon I read in a book when I was much younger that I really liked. For some reason I was calling him Eragon in my head so was confuse by that book and when it was written. Yesterday I went on a quest to find the dragon I liked, only to realize after several hours I had already put it on my audible wish list.
Ellegon is his name and he is a side character in the old Guardians of The Flame series by Joel Rosenberg. It's old, and my memory is fond but I have not yet re-read it so yymv. Apparently it falls into the LitRPG but was written before that was much of a thing but when D&D was big (No stats stuff as far as I remember).
So, good story with a dragon but I am guessing kind of dated for you young people.
