The United States and Russia have more than 12,000 nukes combined. Over 3,000 of those can be launched within 15 minutes’ notice. We avoided annihilation in the Cold War, but what if all-out nuclear war happened today?
Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security, along with Alex Wellerstein of the Stevens Institute of Technology, have created a new realistic nuclear war simulation for a plausible escalation between the U.S. and Russia. The war would occur in phases, quickly escalating as targets changed from tactical locations to cities.
More than 30 million people would die immediately, and twice that many would be injured. Deaths would rise as nuclear fallout settles - this occurs when residual radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere falls back to Earth. The long-term effects of an all-out nuclear exchange between the U.S. and Russia would be severe.
Fires from burning structures following the blast would inject 300 billion pounds of soot into the atmosphere. This would push temperatures below freezing in the summertime in the Northern Hemisphere, reducing planting season by 90%. Global average surface temperatures would fall by 9 degrees Celsius. And in the U.S., they’d drop 20 degrees C below normal in the Summer, and 35 degrees below normal in Russia.

There is an argument that our comfortable modern lives allow us to indulge in the innate tragedy of life. And that is a good portion(not all) of what we call mental illness. Primitive people are so preoccupied with survival they do not have that luxury. It would be messy and ugly for sure. But I bet in a few generations the peoples that survived would just kind of muddle on. We still have the DNA of cave people that lived unimaginably horrific lives. Another 10,000 years of redevelopment and we would be back to whining about microaggressions.

You kids forgot to mention the 1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm. An officer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces decided to wait for more evidence of an attack before alerting his command. A soviet computer error indicated a single American missile was headed towards Moscow. Had the officer reported the alert without waiting, WW3 might well have started right then and there.

Russia answered the declaration of war, in fact.
The immediate casualty estimates seem very low.
They aren't as immediately destructive as they appear in fiction. Also fiction usually assumes the huge mega ton devices from the past that are rare in arsenals today. Don't misunderstand me they are exactly what they are. But with modern and much smaller weapons the immediate effects of blast, heat, and radiation have been overblown in fiction and pop culture. Many more people would die from the fallout and break down of society and food production chains. It would suck to survive the immediate effects, and most people would only to suffer the hellish after effects. The most encouraging fictional account of a nuke war imo is Star Trek TOS and TNG. Humans would survive, but would they learn from it? The Covid response and our current politics does not give me confidence we'll ever learn our way out of our savage instincts. Just an opinion obviously.

Way too low... If each side decided to go after populated cities with 5-10 ICBMs which each have 10 1 megaton warheads the deaths would be in the hundreds of millions. New York, LA... that’s 20 million right there.

A more likely scenario, particularly with a COUNTERVALUE strategy, would be to assign one MIRV'd ICBM, each with eight to ten 100 to 400-kiloton warheads, for a TOT spread over an entire metropolitan area. That way, an attacker would need only 20 separate boosters to distribute up to 4 megatons each over the 20 largest metropolitan areas. One "boomer" submarine could launch that.
I think it’s after the initial impact that’ll kills us all. Remember that just about every nuclear plant on the planet would be going critical! Fukushima and Chernobyl are nothing. You couldn’t go 100 miles without running into an area of life threatening radiation. The worst way to die, rather slowly and while bleeding and covered in puss and sores and constant diarrhea, but the bloody kind! Not a fun way to go.

Yes, With Europe being so small and densely populated, I'd imagine they would lose 500 million alone, US 200m, Russia 90m (lower number due to its vastness and low density) and Canada 30m. The rest of the world will simply suffocate, die of disease and starve to death.

I think accidents and mistakes are the biggest threat here. It's hard to imagine for me, that someone is willingly staring a nuclear war, because each side knows, that this is a No Win Situation.
With hypersonic missiles, that is no longer true. Both Russia and China can potentially take out US decision makers in a first strike on DC, rendering our entire arsenal sitting ducks for a follow-up strike. That is the stated goal of both countries. The only way MAD would still apply is a US first strike, which will likely never happen.

If your one of the people that went out of the way to educate yourself, you get mocked or ridiculed when you bring up the subject. and you either get met with the responses "Oh that'll never happen." or "Russia's military is pathetic America would roll right over them." When talking about a war between super powers almost everyone just forget that nuclear weapons exist. And furthermore people don't realize that both countries are still developing updated delivery systems right now.

If this was scary, never watch British "Threads," what fooled me in the start was nuclear war itself was not so much, let's say conditionally "scary," or pollution, but consequences of failing society later, etc. crops - hunger, no medical system, no education meaning later generations degrade first to middle ages, illiterate, no future doctors, no technicians, no food producers, and in the long run we would be reduced to almost wondering tribes...

In '62 the navy dropped warning depth charges on a Russian sub approaching Cuban waters during the missile crisis. In 1990 ex-Soviet archives showed that the sub had nuclear torpedoes on board and their launch had to be authorised by all three commanders. One of them refused: single handedly saving the world from catastrophe. True story! I mention it in my book Eurasian Tinderbox.
The poßibilitity is that crops might not be able to be grown for for between 8 and 22 years if a nuclear winter occurs. If the sky became very dark at the equator because of all the dirt kicked high into the atmosphere because of a nuclear exchange the temperature of the airr would start dropping and continue doing so. If that temperature drop was 30 to 40 degrees Celsius then most if not all of the oceans would freeze solid. Experts say the shops would likely have food to sell for 60 days. After that you've got what you have where you live or what you can find. The odds are that that is not going to last for a long enough time. If a fully blown ice age occurs because of a nuclear war then typically ice ages can last for 30000 years to 120000 years and the techknowledy machinery electronics and everything about todays people would fade into history as being a myth or fantasy in a story book or holy religous book.. One of the things not talked about is insects. Such a situation kills them. So if birds are kept in some magical survivalist bunker they would not be able to be released with them starving when coditions improved. Allso no insects means no fruits unless people put pollen on stamens of flowers.

There are over 7 billion people on Earth so there is a very good chance at least some fraction of that would persevere/get lucky and manage to survive until the ten years needed to recover had passed. The only way it would kill everyone would be if salted warheads were used... if that happened then yeah all life on the planet dies and stays dead... forever.

I went through a college course(UCLA) that spent all semester dealing with the escalation to full scale nuclear war. From a limited use of tactical nukes to full scale. Our Simulation was in teams of people and not with computers. In many cases once a nuke got fired people just wanted limited revenge which almost always ended up escalating. Even when there were points and benefits to de-escalation, many people still opted for 'one last nuke in revenge or to equal things out.'
Things that would happen that most simulators miss is.
A..This is the outcome that ALWAYS happened.

If US/Russia start the apocalypse, other belligerent idiots will surely want to "grab the opportunity" to have a go at their life-long enemies.
