Great analysis once again, Dan…especially with regard to your insights on Frank’s first appearance and Joel building the cairn.
This was such a beautifully made episode, quite frankly one of the best TV experiences in many years. The performances by both Offerman and Bartlett were absolutely perfect, and TBH I rolled a few tears by the end.
I’m sure I’m not the only game fan who kept waiting for things to turn between the two, and I think Amazon/Druckman played on this by introducing potential triggers and then subverting expectations. Like you, I’m very happy that this particular chapter of the story differed significantly from the game.
I really don’t understand why some fans have rejected this as a “wasted episode”; not only was it beautiful *storytelling*, it also accomplished something rare in this genre: it showed what humanity had lost and what could still be gained. I also loved how the choices made by Frank and Bill could be seen as foreshadowing for some other very important choices that have to be made later in the story (no spoilers of course).
Thanks for keeping up with the show and posting your reviews. I’m always looking forward to your essays on this topic, and you never disappoint.

That's a really big ditto from me, Tim. I honestly would not be surprised if Offerman gets an Emmy for that performance, let alone the episode itself. I love being moved to tears by storytelling and performances, and here, it all came together quite beautifully.

My favorite moment is that in the note that Bill left, he says that they left the window open so that the house wouldn't smell.
They so loved this home that they shared that that even after they died, they didn't want it sullied by the smell of death. They wanted it to remain the place that they had lived. Together.

That point about Frank’s resurrection made me gasp slightly. Got chills too. It doesn’t matter if it was intentional or not - just like with Joel’s cairn stone, the synchronicity is palpable.

This episode made me bawl like a kid. The moment when Frank tenderly kissed Bill's hand towards their shared end and how they went down this corridor..that's love, man. (Note how a kiss on the hand since medieval times symbolises reverence, respect and admiration towards the person who receives the kiss). I was simply reduced to tears and I have no words. Absolutely beautiful, brilliant acting.

Your song, "Joel and Ellie", just fits so perfectly with Bill and Frank's story, and it flowed organically with that scene I included from Bill in the game, adding this whole other layer of emotional atmosphere punctuating his dialogue about having someone he used to care about.

I'm being completely serious when I say that this episode altered my brain chemistry (in a very positive way). It brought me back to music, it reminded me of a personal tragedy and prompted me to reframe it (again, in a very positive way), and it provided catharsis that I didn't know I needed. I don't even feel the need to comment on the changes from the game. It made perfect sense. Absolute *chef's kiss*. Thank you for another beautiful breakdown!

I loved how unlike multiple apocalyptic characters who died out of gruesome deaths this one tackles the fact that no matter how resourceful you are, how lucky, how secure your home is...there is only one thing you can't fight and that's time. Time has been ignored when it comes to preparation in most films and this episode tackles it, if anything this episode feels like a story from the notes you picked up in the game but ended in a more happy ending.

this episode made me cry like a child. seeing 2 people find solace and comfort in each other, and adopting fears they’d never had in this world willingly because the love they share makes it worth it… beautiful. when frank said “because this is my last day” i started sobbing and didn’t stop until ellie and joel got through the note. so beautiful, so haunting, so sad, such a perfect reminder of something i’ve heard before: if you decide to love someone/something, you’re inviting a very sad day into your future… and most of us do it without a second thought, just like bill and frank.
thank you for these videos wolf ❤️

It's interesting for me for where I am at in my experience with life to hear so many reflections on Bill and Frank's story being sad. I had tears for their experience and what they were going through in the moment of certain revelations. But more than anything, their love for each other was uplifting to me, as was the very rich and full life they had carved out for themselves, up to the very end, going out on their own terms. It was a happy transcendent ending for me--sure, one that was poignant with feeling and emotional charge, but not one of sadness for me personally.

At first I wasn't really that open to the idea of Bill dying. But after watching the episode, I'm really happy of this new version of Bill and his arc.
I'm so glad that we got this beautiful love story that was still thematically fitting to the franchise as a whole.
I kinda think that the two versions of Bill might have had a similar start of a relationship with Frank:
What I mean is that they probably had some first few years happy together, but videogame Bill ended up pushing away Frank and in turn he became a very sad and miserable person. Then becoming a cautionary tale for Joel.
But show Bill actually didn't end up pushing him away, which resulted in a very fullfilling 16 years of happiness with Frank. Then as Owen says with Abby in Part 2, Bill and Frank allowed themselves to be happy in this f'ed world, which also shows Joel that that is a possibility.
If you think about it, they pretty much got the happiest ending the could possibly have (well, as happy as you can get in the TLOU universe 😅). They went out together, satisfied, and never lost the love they had for each other.
You wanna know my main complain about this episode tho?:
I needed more of them 😭😭
The episode is great as it is right now. But I would love if we just got a whole show about Bill and Frank and their shenanigans in those 16 years 😭
Amazing video Dan as always, they did our main man Bill justice! 🥰
    Take care mate 😊

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Roger, and I agree with you that Bill and Frank really got a happy ending here. It was tears of happiness from me for them at the end. I also feel Bill's letter to Joel in the show did wonders in slowly solidifying Joel's future determination to keep this person, Ellie, safe. One could argue video game Bill was a voice to deny that burden and responsibility of looking after another. Whereas show Bill caused Joel to pause, reflect, and likely regret that he wasn't able to protect Tess. Leaving an even more believable scenario in which he will inevitably decide to protect Ellie, no matter what.

Glad to see you back. So far, I've been lucky and haven't seen a lot of hate on this episode for the content. Only one reactor had some idiot commentors but not many. For the most part, people have been welcoming and loving of this episode and that's been wonderful to see. I hope it's not just that I've missed them because I'm not done looking at reactors, yet. It's funny, because if I'd known this epi was only about Bill and Frank, I might have been worried that it was a waste of a whole episode when we only get 9 of them. But once it started, I was just pulled in, wanting more and glad for ever second. I was shocked how much story was in this short amount of time, and how full and artful the characters were. It drew me in and washed over me, pulling out every emotion imaginable. Mostly tears, of course, whether they be happy or sad ones. I can't help but wonder if this show has any chance at awards, being the type of show it is. It should. And this episode deserves them!

My only knit pick is that Bill He is was a survivalist and he was smart, he would not stand out in the middle of the street whilst taking fire with no cover in sight. He would have been in a clock tower or something picking the raiders off. I'm sorry I don't buy that a fkn fence got the better of the other raiders that weren't turned into roasted marshmallows. They survived years in an apocalypse. Other than that fantastic episode.

I was a goddamn mess over this episode tbqh. like, I'm qu33r so this hits hard in a few ways. Primarily, as noted by Jessie Gender, a lot of TLOU is about how toxic love can be, but this version of Bill and Frank will serve as a foil to those that we'll soon see. There's also the fact that, these two had to figure out that they're both gay using coded language. Having the outbreak happen in 2003 means they're starting from a world in which the LGBTQ community is still in recovery from the AIDS crisis and one in which gay marriage wasn't on the horizon yet (I'm not even sure the debates about it had even started at that point, or if they had, it was not in favor of in most areas). and this all leads into how in building the radio code, the first part mentioned is 80s music for trouble brewing! Because of course it was in the minds of every gay/bi/pan man in the world (and I'm fairly certain that the both of them are old enough to have that be in their memories, if I'm mathing right). And also how, on their last day, they have their own marriage ceremony, something they wouldn't have dreamed of being legal in the pre-outbreak days. Maybe a government would never recognize it, but I'd say whatever deity they believe in would.

I've only been into TLOU for like 3 months now after beating the Uncharted games on the hardest difficulty but even then I get what you're saying here. I liked how both Bill and Frank were explored compared to the game where everything that happened with them was in the past. They get to be fleshed out into something more meaningful. While it kinda sucked not seeing the high school fight in this episode, I kinda get it too tbh. We just came out from seeing our protagonists running from a giant zombie horde last episode and to see that again in this one would just make it all feel repetitive. Here, we're able to catch our breath and the characters are able to process what happened regarding Tess while also getting a story that pushes the melancholic and grim nature of TLOU universe. Next week is where shit's really gonna hit the fan since they're most likely heading to Pittsburgh now

I’m uplifted by the overwhelming positivity towards the episode, and as a story within the TLOU universe it’s a very strong addition to the overall lore. It’s also faultless as an episode of television. I’m torn though because I sort of wish this story had been given to an original pair of characters instead of Bill and Frank, because I like their in-game story and would have liked bitter, cantankerous Bill and his antagonistic relationship with Frank to have had a place in the show too. I can’t fault the writers for choosing to instead take Bill, as a prominent secondary character, and use him to tell a sweet and life-affirming vignette within an otherwise very dark story. TLOU is above all else a tale of love in the midst of a cruel and unloving world, and this episode did a great job of doing that, rather then doubling down on bleakness as lesser apocalyptic stories might.

I was so upset at how the pt1 remake didn’t expand or add on with story…this show resonated why it made more sense to have pt1 still be the same game, and the show being it’s own thing. It’s such a good adaption and change that couldn’t be done in a game. In the same aspect Bills Town couldn’t work ad well as the game did either. It’s the best of both worlds pun intended. I truly hope they continue to subvert and remix because they do it well. It’s a what if on the smaller moments

While I enjoyed the creative choices in this episode and the interesting backstory and further exploration of Bill as a character and an LGBT one at that, I did miss seeing his interactions with Ellie especially. They are both very similar in some ways, and I a bit sad the show did not leave room for that, or to really show Bill being a badass in his own way when it comes to fighting infected and weaving through the small city of Lincoln as it was in the game. I love the segregated little town idea and Bill hiding in his prepper bunker and then looting everything before hell breaks loose, but yeah.

Broken record post since you obviously understand the difference between the two Bill's, but I have to keep saying it...
Honestly, they should have just made a new character since none of the events of Bill's Town were in the episode. It was a good show and most reasonable people aren't put off by the relationship, it just didn't have anything to do with Bill's Town in the game. Bill wasn't the same Bill, we never get to see the town, we didn't get the upside down event, we didn't get any of the interactions between Bill and Ellie or Bill and Joel, no school event, and Bill in the episode isn't even the badass in the game as he stupidly stands out in the middle of the road with a bunch of guys that could have taken him out with one shot. There were no infected, there were no traps, except one silly flamethrower that catches a human?!
Also, in the game, Frank clearly left because Bill is...well, Bill, so the whole idea of the paranoid survivor driving away the person he was closest too also gets kicked to the curb.
